IPhoto is slow at opening a SD Card for import

Hi all,
I am having problems with my SD card opening in iPhoto but once it is open it is fine, it can take 30 - 60 seconds for the card to be recognized by the iMac, here some of the things I have tried to do:
1. Formatted the card.
2. Deleted the PList file.
3. Held down CMD + OPT and rebuilt the last four options: http://cl.ly/2Orr <-- Link to screen shot.
My next thing I am going to try is reinstalling iPhoto from the Applications Install disk, is this a good idea?
Is there anything else it could be?, the SD Card is nice and snug in the card reader, it has worked straight away in the past. Which leads me to think it's software and not hardware.
Appreciate any feedback you guys & girls can give me.
Hugh

It could be a preference file other than iPhoto's. Here's how to check that out:
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard/Snow Leopard
1 - close all applications.
2 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
3 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.
If that doesn't help the situation try reapplying this updates: Mac OS X v10.6.4 Update (Combo)

  • IPhoto 6 slow when opening and closing

My wife has a love-hate relationship with iPhoto. iPhoto takes time to open and close. Here is my observations:
    1) MacBook Pro with 512MB and 10 000 pics. The file Library6.iphoto is 130MB and I realized that each operation in iPhoto recreates this file (using the temporary file Library6.temp). It probably explains much of the slowness.
    2) iMac Intel with 1GB and 7 000 pics (subset of the previous 10 000). Now the Library6.iphoto is 17MB. What a difference! Opening and closing time quite acceptable.
I read a lot of articles on the subject and I don't think that the problem is explained by EXIF info.
More memory probably makes a difference, but not much.
The real issue is probably the size of the Library6.iphoto file. I would so much like to take an inside look to each record of this file!
    Is anyone has an idea?

    denismailloux:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Both libraries are at version 6, right? If the one with the 130MB data file is at V5 that would explain the slowness. Have ou tried rebuilding the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select just the option to rebuild the database. See if that won't give you a smaller Library6.iPhoto file.
Another possibility, if the normal rebuild doesn't do the trick is to rebuild the library with
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
It does not touch or modify the original library so there's no danger of the process messing it up. Worth a try.

  • IPhoto 6 slow to open and close

I have a mac mini with an external drive connected via firewire. IPhoto 6 works really fast on the mac mini...no problems. I just got a new MacBook Pro and can mount the external drive...no problem.
When I open iphoto and point to the iPhoto library on the external drive, it takes forever to open. Once it is open, it is a bit sluggish, but works OK. Then it takes forever to close as well.
I didn't think the speed over Airport was that slow....am I wrong? Why the slowdown on the MacBook Pro and the mac mini is really fast? Thought it would be the other way around.
I called Apple Care and they had me reinstall Tiger...nothing changed. Please help. Thanks.

    Brent:
From the posts I've read about it accessing large data files like images over Airport is going to be rather slow. Close all of the rolls before closing and then see if that improves the closing and opening process. There's just a lot of data that has to be transferred.
Do check the Airport forum as there may be some tricks available that will help speed up the process.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • IPhoto 2 slow to open

    Hello everyone
iPhoto 2 takes around 7 minutes to open on my trusty 400MHz Powerbook 15" titanium running 10.3.9. Hasn't always done so, but happens without fail now. I click the icon in the dock then get a spinning disc for about 7 minutes until the rolls finally display, after which it operates as normal. I have already tried rebuilding the library (got a sore finger from holding down shift-option for 7 minutes). Does anyone know what's gone wrong here? I only have around 1100 photos totalling around 1030MB in the library, and it's all displayed in rolls by default, which would logically give the computer less work to do when initially opening the program.
To help you pitch your answer at an appropriate level, my knowledge of how Macs work on a scale of 1-10 is about 3, but getting better all the time...
Many thanks in advance for any help.
    iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Powerbook 15" titanium 400MHz PowerPC G4 384MB SDRAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have 2.32 GB disk space left out of a total capacity of 9.37 GB , so about 24% free space. Is this enough to let things run OK?
No, it may not be, and this is why running OS X on a 10GB hard drive is quite impractical — especially if you use iPhoto, iTunes or iMovie, which create huge libraries of data.
A hard drive on which OS X is installed, and which is used as the primary startup drive for a Mac, really ought to have at least 5GB of available space on it at all times. You need that much to perform an Archive & Install of OS X, which under some circumstances is the appropriate remedy for OS corruption or other problems. You need at least that much to burn a single-sided DVD using either an internal DVD burner (which I your Tibook probably doesn't have) or an external burner. If you aren't concerned about being able to perform either of those operations, you can safely run with less than 5GB of free space on your startup drive — but the less free space you have, the more likely you are to run into slowdowns or worse problems, including the eventual loss of data. 2GB should be considered an absolute minimum under any and all circumstances, and 1GB is far into the danger zone. You are now very close to the minimum, and depending on your habits of usage and maintenance, you may be too close to expect your Powerbook to operate efficiently.
The less RAM you have, the more it matters how much free disk space is available, and the slower your Mac will run under all circumstances. 384MB of RAM is certainly not minimal, but if you had 512MB, 768MB or 1GB of RAM, your OS wouldn't need to make as much use of space on the hard drive for its swapfiles, and most operations would run faster. And if you had a larger hard drive, you'd be able to store a lot more photos and other data, update or upgrade your software freely, and install new applications before you needed to worry about how little free space remained on the drive.
If I were you, I'd replace the 10GB hard drive ASAP with at least a 30-40GB unit. They are now ridiculously cheap: for well under $100 USD, you could have a much larger, faster and quieter drive, and installation is so easy it's described right in your Powerbook Getting Started user's manual.

  • IPhoto '11 Crashes every time when accessing SD card for import.

iPhoto '11 launches as expected when I insert an SD card from my Canon T2i into a SD card reader in my 17" MacBook Pro's SD card reader that is located in the Mac's ExpressCard slot.
iPhoto then goes to the somewhat new looking import screen where the rainbow pinwheel spins for quite sometime. There are a little over 2,000 images on the card, but this is nothing iPhoto '09 ever had any issues with.
After locking up for about 5 minutes, iPhoto crashes. This has happened every time I have attempted to import. I have tried restarting, repairing permissions, running Disk Warrior and reinstalling iPhoto.
The images on the same SD card are accessible with the Finder and can be imported by Aperture.
    Please help!

Can you try using Image Capture and see if it works there? Also, if you post a crash log sometimes we can tell what is happening. If Image Capture works, you can import the photos on your desktop and then drag and drop them into iPhoto. There is a chance that a photo is damaged and it is causing iPhoto to crash. Also, if the photos imported in Aperture without a problem, you can export them from there and import them into iPhoto. After you safely import the photos I suggest you reformat the SD card in your camera. Sometimes after repeated use things could get corrupted there.

  • IMac suddenly so slow. 3.06GHz, 4GB RAM, OS X 10.7.3. Suddenly endless "cache-ing" going on, esp. when boot up, apps slow to open, 10 sec delay for keyboard hits to appear, colour "wheel" spinning on screen. Lots free HD space. What happened? Help!!

Suddenly so much "cache-ing" going on in the background, especially after boot-up.  But no new software downloaded recently, and plenty of HD space.
Apps now take long time to open, keyboard hits sometimes delayed by maybe 10 seconds before registering, the multi-colour spinning wheel often on screen, can hear hard drive whirring around endlessly in background.
What's happened?  Some sort of virus?  And how to fix, I wonder?  I'm using CleanMyMac and have run that several times, but has no effect.
    Any help gratefully received.  Thanks.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure that the right volume is selected in the Startup Disk preference pane.
    2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Reset the PRAM.
    5. Start up in safe mode, then restart as usual. If you can't start in safe mode—for instance, if FileVault is active—then triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /var/folders
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with an item named "folders" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart and empty the Trash.

  • IPhoto doesn't recognize pictures on card / already imported pictures

    Hi all,
iPhoto '09 (latest version) on my wife's MBP (CoreDuo, early 2006, latest Snow Leopard) has always worked well for het (about 35,000 pix in the database). Last week, out of a sudden, it stopped recognizing new images when a card is plugged in (tested with two different SD cards from two different cameras). Manual importing works, but it won't recognize already imported images anymore, it just imports them again.
I already re-built iPhoto's database (by holding alt + cmd when starting up iPhoto), but it didn't change anything.
This is really strange - can anyone help us here?
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Thomas.

Well, I was too fast yesterday. Nothing is solved.
Today my wife said that when she plugged in the card from her new camera (8 GB), iPhoto starts up but then showed the spinning wheel for 10 minutes, no pictures are shows. Then she got impatient and imported manually again.
I tested again tonight with the 8 GB SDHC card - all tests yesterday were done with a 2 GB standard SD card. And really, regardless what card I plug in, iPhoto doesn't start up. Even changing the program to start up when a camera is attached (see above) doesn't help.
So I created a new user account. Plugged in the 2 GB card, iPhoto starts and shows all pix. Fine. Closed iPhoto, ejected the card and plugged in the 8 GB one. iPhoto starts up and - just as described above - only shows the spinning wheel but no pictures within 10 minutes (364 images are on the card). Closed iPhoto again, and now it doesn't even start up anymore, no matter which of the two cards I plug in.
Can it be that iPhoto has a problem with the 8 GB SDHC card? We have been using this only for 3 weeks now, when we bought a new camera. Before the 2 GB SD card was used. However, iPhoto worked well with the 8 GB card for the first two weeks, and I haven't tried if re-formatting will help.
    Any comments?
    Thank you!
    Best wishes,
    Thomas.

  • I updated my Macbook Pro last week to Lion.  I went to go import pictures from a memory card to my iPhoto, but only a portion of them loaded before my iPhoto froze and I had to Force Quit it. Now iPhoto won't even open... Help!

I updated my Macbook Pro last week to Lion.  I went to go import pictures from a memory card to my iPhoto, but only a portion of them loaded before my iPhoto froze and I had to Force Quit it. Now iPhoto won't even open... Help!
Please! I need an answer fast!!!!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • After upgrading to Lion 10.7.1 - iPhoto and other programs slow to open and other problems

Am I alone - having lots of problems with 10.7.1.  iPhoto is slow and when I export photos it exists iphoto then I restart and sometimes it will works.  Safari is slower also. Sometimes it justs hangs and I have to force quit.  iTunes is also slower to open. Almost everytime it goes to a checking library for a long time.
Should I go back to previous version? Will I lose my purchase. I do not have disks for the upgrade.  I do not want to go back - I have a lot of data and always fear of losing it.
Think Apple knows about the problems or am I the only one and have some other problem?

    olegz,
First, thanks for the clear graphics.
Authorization seems to be the hangup here. But instead of dealing with the complications of conflicts in authorization, which might take several weeks to months to iron out - site by site - I urge you to follow a different path.
It looks like you're using Chrome. For this site alone, use either Safari or Firefox, both of which are more likely to have plugins to deal with authorizing your site. Safari is already on your computer, but v.3 of Firefox is stable, too. Frankly, I can't tell you what specifically might be the problem here; but switching browsers will solve the immediate problem.
Sound good? Not so good? Post in this thread so that I or others can solve your problem once and for all!

  • Why won't iPhoto 11 in Mavericks open or create books, cards, etc?

Why won't iPhoto 11 in Mavericks open or create books, cards, etc? I can't open existing projects or create new ones. Nothing happens when I try to open a project: alsop, nothing happens when I click 'Create' when trying a make a card, book, etc. All very frustrating.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • IPhoto 11 is so slow when opening

Very recently my iPhoto has become so slow when opening, it can take anywhere between 3 and 7 minutes, during this time my Macbook just hangs, I can't use any other programs.
I have attempted running the iPhoto first aid, I have picked all of the options on the first aid list and nothing has helped. I have tried quitting everything before opening iPhoto and this makes no difference. I have also deleted some of the photos from my library, but I don't have an exceptionally large library anyway, 1900 jpegs.
I am running iPhoto 11 version 9.4.2 with mountain lion 10.8.2, I have no issues with any other programs being slow.
Once it opens it is generally fine, but it's just turning a 20 second task into a 10 minute task.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have (had?) the identical problem, with just slightly different details (I'm on Lion, not Mountain Lion, and I haven't tried repairing anything yet in iPhoto). iPhoto used to start up in a reasonable amount of time, but it seems since updated to 9.4.2, the startup time is incredibly long (I'll guess 5-10x longer). Admittedly, I have one of the largest iPhoto libraries I've heard of, but I'm just really trying to see why the update changed startup time so much.
Note that I have 500GB of free space on my boot drive, and that creating a new iPhoto library results in a speedy startup.
An oddity I just now see after creating a new library is, when I go back to select my old library at iPhoto launch, there are two libraries listed, with identical names, and identical paths ("iPhoto Library" - /Users/UserName/Pictures/iPhoto Library). Looking in the finder, I only see one Library with that name. After playing around with opening either one, now the first one says "(default)" after it every time.
Note that I just added "(had?)" to the beginning of my post, as it seems like my library has started opening in the normal amount of time since I played around with the libraries (creating a new one, etc.). So maybe just creating a new library and then going back to the default library with help thatgurlwho too?

  • IPhoto Library very slow to open

Hi all, I am having a very difficult time with iPhoto5 and the size and therefore performance of my library. I have years worth of photo's (>10,000) and iPhoto takes forever to open and do simple tasks.
Please help me with a two part question.
    1) Is there a setting or anything in iPhoto that limits how many of my photo's it will load on starting? Typically, I just want to look at the photos from the last 1-2 months. If there isn't any setting or advise on how to make it open faster and function quicker, then please read part 2.
    2) Does the new iPhoto 6 have improved library handling? I have tried third party library managers, but they have caused as many problems as they have solved.
I certainly cannot be the only photo enthusiast who has a lot of photos to manage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but MacWorld had a recent article in the past 2-3 months on this very topic - speeding up various pieces of software, iPhoto included.
The only iPhoto tip I recall off the top of my head was to reduce the library's view size down to its minimum, default size. That is, the lower right hand scroll bar for picture size - slide it all the way to the left.
There may be other default settings in addition to that, but that one alone should help if you've been closing iPhoto with pictures viewed in any custom-sized setting.

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none.

Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none. have to force quit  most of the time.

I'm experiencing the same trouble.  Photoshop takes 5 minutes to open then runs fine.
I recently bought a new iMac AND updated to Adobe Master Collection CS6.  My concern is that PhotoShop now takes 5 minutes to open. The Photoshop desktop pops up immediately, but the moment you click on a tool or try to open a file (no matter the size) results in the spinning wheel for five minutes before you can do anything.  After that, Photoshop appears to work fine.
    What I’ve done:
    Ran Adobe updater
    Reset Photoshop Preferences
Validated all fonts and removed any trouble fonts
    Ran the font test
Set font preview size to none
Cleared the Photoshop type cache and system cache
    Disabled Symantec Endpoint
Tried running with the GPU processor on/off and in basic
Tried opening Photoshop with optional third party plug-ins turned off (still took five minutes but this time I didn’t even get the Photoshop desktop view until AFTER the five minutes)
I’m wondering since I migrated the files form my old computer (and older versions of Master Collection) did something get corrupted.
