Iphoto is stuck importing

When guys,
When I open iphoto it will open but it automatically starts to import and gets stuck where it says "finishing import." You have to force quit the program to get this to stop. Is there anyway to fix this problem.
Thanks

Well that shoots down that brillant theory.
Try the following: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
A 3rd possibility would be to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge your current library into the new one which allows you to import the photos.

please let me know what to do
    the iphoto version is 5.0.1

    Hi ambrosia,
i am afraid that if you force quit right now you will run into problems opening your library when you next try.
If it is at all possible (an I don't even know if this will work while iPhoto is running) open a finder window and navigate to the iPhoto Library folder.
Highlight the folder and hit Command D to duplicate the folder. I am hoping you can do this before any changes are made to the data files that might corrupt them when you force quit iPhoto.
Once you have the duplicate library, then you can see if you can Force quit iPhoto. You can do this if you see the "force quit" option when you click and hold on the iPhoto icon in the dock. You can also launch Activity Monitor and find iPhoto in the window and choose to force quit it from there.
What kind of camera do you have and how many images and or video clips are you trying to download. Sometimes iPhoto gets stuck on very large video clips and eventually they will download.

  • IPhoto suddenly wont import photos from my iPhone

iPhoto suddenly wont import photos from my iPhone.
Keeps sending me error messages... wrong format.
    anyone know about this?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • IPhoto 11 - problem importing photos from camera

When i try to import more than one photo at a time from a camera, the import gets stuck importing the second photo, then after a while fails with the error 'unrecognised file format'. All the images are .jpeg and can be sucessfully imported one at a time.
Is there a fix to this problem?
    Thanks,
    iPhoto '11 version 9.4.2

First step is to get the photos off the camera and reformat your memory card using the camera's format command
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and the reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

  • I imported 100 photos, when I was reading photos iphoto crushed, and when I restarted iphoto all photos imported had disappeared! Is there a way to find them. They were imported, they can not have disappeared from the hard disk?

I imported 100 photos from my camera (Canon) into iphoto. The importation went well, and when I was watching the photos, suddenly iphoto crashed. I restarted iphoto and realized that the photos had disapered. The events are availbble into iphoto but they are empty, the photos have dispeared. I can not believe they disapeared as they have been imported and read once, they must be hidden somewhere on the disk? Is there a way to find where they are?

Assuning you're running iPhoto 9 or later try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Should i delete my photos from iPhoto after I import to aperture

should i delete my photos from iPhoto after I import to aperture? What is the easiest way to do this?

    Depends.
Did you copy the files into the Aperture Library on Import?
If so, it's safe to do so. My tip: wait a few weeks until you're happy that you're committed to Aperture.
Drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the trash.

So you want to move the iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

  • IPhoto will not import certain JPG files

I have just migrated to a 2012 Retina 15" MacBook Pro from a 13" MBP. I am using Mavericks 10.9.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1. The MBP is a 2.7gHz quad core with 16GB of memory and a 768GB SSD. I was trying to tidy up my hard disc and import some .jpg files from the output folder on my Capture One Session. iPhoto will not import certain jpg files but will import others. The message I get is as follows  The following file could not be imported.  The file is an unrecognised format. Then shows below for example /Users/xxxx/Pictures/Capture One Session/Output/L1000212.jpg.
I first tried creating a new library and importing to that with no success. I then rebuilt the database. I repaired permissions. I deleted the iPhoto.plist and its caches and restarted - no success. I then deleted iPhoto and reinstalled from App Store after deleting the plist and caches again. Still no luck. The .jpg files in question open perfectly in Photoshop CC and Preview. I tried altering them slightly and resaving but still they would not import. I reinstalled Mavericks - no improvement. If I reconvert the files from the original DNG's into TIFF files, then they will import to iPhoto
    Any ideas anyone?
    Wilson

I just recorded an action in Photoshop CC to assign ProPhoto colourspace save and close. Then copied all the problem jpegs into a temp file and ran the action. With this super fast machine, It only took a few minutes to convert 500+ files and they have now all imported perfectly. I have changed my JPEG recipe to convert DNG's from embedded to ProPhoto.
Thanks again. Colourspace would never have occurred to me.

  • Why is iPhoto (Mountain Lion) importing RAW/NEF files as jpeg's?

I am manually importing via DVD's my archived iPhoto files from  iPhoto '08, (7.1.5), Snow Leopard, to my new computer running Mountain Lion. iPhoto '11 (9.4.3). Most of my files are in RAW format (NEF) and was saved as such. I am noticing that as I import from the discs into the new iPhoto, it is importing some as jpeg's and I am loosing my RAW data. I am findiing very little being imported as RAW.
Has anyone else had this experience?
Is there somewhere in the settings that I am not finding, to correct this? I checked all that I know to look at and I did not find anywhere an option to change the format of the image in importing.
I, also, converted files from jpeg to.tiff and saved them as such, but I am not finding any .tiff files either.
    Any info?
Thank you for any help you can give.

    OK.  WOW!
One by one!  Larry, Terence and Old Toad,
Thank you, all of you, for your helpful replies.
Firstly, I am a little confused between Larry and Terence; sounds like opposite info. Is it?
Old Toad, Now I know about this easy way to do this. I have, at least, 1T+20,000 more images, some of which I will import into my new 750 gig Macbook Pro, so this seems easy. (Already over 30,000 images. Can iPhoto hold so much???)
It seems tho, that I AM BUSTED!
Unfortunatelly, I could not import directly the old Library to the new Library because of the below reason. (even tho there seems to be some difference of opinion on this between Terence and Larry)
I did the unthinkable. I worked out of the iPhoto Library.
What I did was this: my older Macbook Pro, had a 200 gig HDD, and could NOT handle all the photos I was putting into it (which I needed to do the work I want to do), so I first downloaded the images from my camera to iPhoto, then, I downloaded,as I went along, by year, to external HDD, and then I cut DVD's, by year, in pieces, via Toast, as my backup. (both, directly from the iPhoto Library), Then, I deleted many of the photos in each event, in each year, leaving only enough to remind me what is in that event.
(Then, when I needed images from that event, I could go back to the HDD to see and get the rest of the pix I needed to use).
I KNOW this is totally SACRELIGIOUS of Mac and the whole iPhoto Library set-up, but it didn't hurt the library functioning, (in the old mac), at all, and was the only way I knew to do it, as going thru iPhoto itself, didn't work out so well.
(That is why I didn't import directly my old library to the new Mac, not all the photos were there, and I thought it would be more confusing trying to add the missing photos to each event in the new iPhoto).
However, re-importing from the HDD  to the new iPhoto, was a bit of a mess, as I got, (as 2 of you, above, said), mixed up info, as both "originals" as well as "events" downloaded, which gave me duplicates of some, and the dates are NOT necessarily in order, as was in the old iPhoto before. (but that I can reconcile, later, can't I?
Can I move events to other places in iPhoto?
However, going directly via the DVD's into the new iPhoto, gave me exact input and I got all the files as well as all the data. But, in some, very slow downloading, and very few, some date order mixup, but very few.
SO, this new iPhoto Library is a bit messed up with the duplicate images in about the first 3,000 or so images, but I assume I can fix this up.
    Oh g---d.
In any event, it is now showing RAW and jpeg's as info in the metadata pane.
Thank you , all of you. I am not so computer savy, I do better in photography!
All the help I receive is welcome and worthwhile. And if there is anymore you want to tell me, besides scolding me for going into the iPhoto Library, it is all welcome.
    I Thank you.
