IPhoto is terrible

The changes make no sense. Cannot fill screen with photo. Or can you? Question - can I revert to the older version?
Burning to cd is not easy.
Full screen means something different.
Pain in the ....

You have a corrupted Library.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
I hope Apple is listening to these forums
They're not. As made clear in the Terms of Use, this is a forum for Users to talk to other Users. Apple don't promise to read anything here. iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route to them.

  • H.264 slideshow from iPhoto looks terrible in QT X

What is going on here? I just exported a slideshow from iPhoto '09 as 1280x720 h.264. Quen I play this with quicklook or with QT X it looks terrible. Colors are washed out and desaturated.
However, if I view it in QT 7 Pro on the same machine, the movie looks fine. Colors are bold and nice.
This file is going to play on another mac (not SL), how will it look there? Can anyone explain why this occurs?
    Thanks,
    -Ed

Yeah, with 400 slides, even without the video and music, you're going to have a large file any way you look at it. However, large isn't a BAD thing when you're looking at creating something for DVD since large usually = high quality = good for that purpose.
Let's ignore the final output for now and always export as small ( or medium, just enough to see that your timing is right) for your tests. Figure out between the Keynote presentation and the QuickTime movie what appears to be going on. Do you hear audio then a loooong pause before the next transition? Are your movies not displaying like you want them to? Both of these are caused by the differences between the way Keynote and QuickTime deals with media. In Keynote, if you want a movie clip to play for 4 seconds, you have to put in a 4 second delay for it. When you export this to QuickTime, QuickTime puts in the video PLUS adds the 4 second delay so that you'll have pauses where it looked like Keynote was synched better.
Make a copy of your presentation and, if you have any delays, remove all of them and re-export to see if that solves a few of your problems.

  • Imported pictures look terrible

Has anybody noticed that imported pictures from iPhoto look terrible? They're all jagged and blurry. This same issue happened with iMovie 4, I think it was, and then was fixed in iMovie 5 and now it seems to be back again.

Not a solution, but you'll find some feedback I got from my posting (jean-Claude) dated feb 5th, 06 ... "jagerred lines on slides show". I find that the problem seems to be getting worse as time goes by, and it's driving me crazy !!!

  • Bad iPhoto 11 to Aperture 3.1 import results

I've been using iPhoto for years and recently purchased Aperture 3. When I imported my iPhoto library, many of the images that I have meticulously adjusted in iPhoto came into Aperture tweeked way out. The adjustments have been greatly exaggerated in Aperture and now look terrible. I can "revert" to original and start over making those adjustments, but that's thousands of images.
Many images imported just fine. But many are pretty bad.
Has anyone else experienced this before? Am I doing something incorrectly, or is this a known problem with Aperture?

I have the same problem.  Used iPhoto for a couple of years, my library got so large it seemed to have trouble handling it, so moved to Aperture.  Transferring libraries seemed really simple, and all the albums, orders etc all tied up.  Now though I find like you that painstakingly adjusted photos edited in iPhoto look terrible in Aperture.  The master images are fine, but for some reason the iPhoto edited version is being shown completely differently.  Not sure what to do now - I'm not starting again in Aperture from the originals, and don't want to lose my album structure from iPhoto by exporting everything as jpegs from iPhoto.  Did you get an further with this issue?

  • "changes" to my photo's

Ok I use to use iPhoto and I'm slowly switching to Aperture (I'm at a crazy time at work and can't spend as much time with this as I'd like too).
I was always disappointed when I'd open a photo in iPhoto and then move it to Photoshop to make some adjustments.  It just didn't look right in Photoshop and it looked great in iPhoto.
I'm taking a photography course and one of the administrators (she is a photographer as well) sent me this message:
"The reason is that when you open images in iPhoto on the Mac it applies a profile to your image to make it look the best it can. This is why it does not look as good in Photoshop. Be sure not to edit or open your images in iPhoto first as it will apply this profile to your image and can lessen the quality of your file when you work on it in Photoshop."
Hmmmm maybe that is why my photos look great in iPhoto and terrible in Photoshop or when I print them.
Does Aperture do this?  Does it change my photo in any way or add any sort of profile to it?
    Thanks!
    Susan

    Hi Susan,
Yes, it is a little confusing, hence my asking you to look more at the manual. You have to understand that Aperture is known more as a digital asset manager, or a database for all your images. It's about organization. Apple has since added a lot of editing features as well, so people believe it's supposed to be an alternative to Photoshop. But that is another thread...
What is happening when you choose to edit a photo with your external editor (Photoshop) is that Aperture creates a new TIFF or Photoshop document (depending on your Export settings) next to the version of the image file you originally imported into Aperture. These two are related in what's called a Stack by default. You should see this happen in Aperture while Photoshop opens. Another version of your photo should appear right next to the version you initially imported and tweaked in Aperture.
Then you make your edits in Photoshop, you choose File > Save, and the photo is saved in the Aperture Library. If you quit Photoshop quickly, you should see the thumbnail or preview in Aperture update with the changes you made in Photoshop. Your original version will still look as it did before the Photoshop edits, but the version created when you chose to edit with PS will update with those edits.
You never really save something in Photoshop as Photoshop is not a container. You can save something AS a Photoshop document, but not in a Photoshop container. The Aperture Library is a container or, essentially, a folder on your hard drive...
There are more things to learn about the library (managed or referenced) but again, that's another thread.
And yes, the edits you make in Aperture are non destructive so your RAW file is never really touched...
I hope that makes sense. Having said all that, have you looked at your Export settings, etc.?

  • Exporting slideshow to QuickTime - any more recent answers?

110 mb slideshow incorporating movie clips exported from imovie to quicktime.
i've done this successfully in the past, but now get the "your slideshow cannot be exported as a quicktime movie" error.
way more than ample disk space available.
    Keynote 3.0.1
    OS 10.4.7
preference is checked for "exit show after last slide."
i really need a workaround - having done this successfully in the past, i just buried a ton of time in a presentation that needs to be quicktimed for import to imovie for control of two soundtracks.
    deeply appreciate all responses. thanks.

I had same question you had ... example is not all of us do slide shows to be shown on T.V. sets ONLY. I find viewing DVD via normal television set to be very poor quality - and so, I don't bother.
Primarily, I am a photographer who makes presentations via digital projection @ 1024x768 - with the choice to make a DVD later as a back up.
I have noted when you do a slide show in iPhoto the presention via my monitor (1024x768 setting) is absolutely perfect .... but when saving to QT with the limited res of 640 x 480, the outcome is horrendous - even with High Quality is activated in QT - i.e dissolve transitions set in iPhoto are terrible when viewed via QT .... especially when you have images showing lots of sky. You get the 'solarization' effect ... regardless of images that are initially imported at high res or not. (I normally import RAW images @ 300 dpi).
Here is the solution that works for me and use .... what I have found to work well so as to have the option to choose resolution to give me full screen, and save to a DVNTSC PRO as one option, I use iMovie and use iPhoto ONLY as a pre-production preparation to set up story line, test out music, etc ...
Too bad Apple just chooses to dictate how their software works - sort of caving in to the status quo, I suppose - much easier and no doubt cheaper for them ... I too would rather have the choice to choose many things, same as done in iMovie - that is, include other QT resolutions for exporting a slide show full screen, etc. - they do allow you to choose resolution when exporting from the library .. but with limited transitions time-wise. Exporting a 'slide presentation' is different. Why?????
My .02, and I seriously doubt iPhoto will ever have this added option ... it is after all consumer level software, not pro level. Yet, iMovie is also same level ... go figure.

  • Modify picture frame in book

How do I modify the aspect ratio of a frame in a book? For example if I have a picture 3:1, I want a frame 3:1. iPhoto insists that all pictures are 4:3 or 3:4, so only a part of my 3:1 picture can be included in a book. I need to modify the frame in the book to adapt to the picture underneath.
How do I arrange the frames on a page manually? I want to choose the location of the picture frames, and which overlays which. The default pages in iPhoto are terribly restrictive.
    Thanks! - Andy

Thank you! Right click doesn't do it, but CTRL-Right Click does. However the "Fit to Frame" is grayed out.... My photo is long vertically and short horizontally (a tall Christmas Tree, without the clutter of everything around it). If I can get the photo to fit, then it would fit the photo with black space on the left and right to fit into the frame. Don't know why it's grayed out; any advice would be most helpful.
That menu has sent to front/back, which works fine -- and that's a big help on its own.
I did send feedback to Apple a few weeks ago, when I ran into this problem. I've had no response from Apple.

  • How to solve issue with strange iphoto events shown in itunes for sync IOS devices ? This issue is very old and not been fixed by apple... terrible

all softwares latest version january 2013.
I see in itunes many strange crazy iphoto events that in iphoto do not exist.
These vents are named as data and contains just few photos.
each event can be sync with IOS devices, but that event is not in iphoto !
It looks like miniatures... no way to solve this issue making all possible maintenance in iphoto library.
THis issue is very old, very terrible, people start to have doubts about iphoto as a reliable software.
    Need a fix asap.
    Apple please help!
I were with 2 hours at genius bar but nothing.
Genius told me apple have been informed and they are working on a solution..... this 4 months ago !!!
    Need solution asap
    THanks
    Fabio

Apple aren't here. As you're the only person with this problem that I've seen on here, I would suspect that its more a local problem on your machine than something Apple need to fix.
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache.
Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

  • Terrible iPhoto 6 bug, and some clues..

    Hi, everybody!
I still don't have a satisfactory answer to this problem, which has essentially shut down my ability to use iPhoto. It seems that a number of people have this same problem (based on postings here).
I shoot a bunch of digital photos, and import the as a roll into iPhoto. All similar shots with the same hardware. Some random percentage of them are not editable or viewable in a slideshow. Double clicking on the thumbnails (which all look fine), results in a blank screen in the edit view, but just for a few images in each imported roll. I have checked the permissions, changed the "open with" option, etc..
Some clues, maybe this means something to someone here:
    1) When I drag an unopenable image to the desktop (by dragging the thumbnail), the desktop icon is a thumbnail of the image. When I drag an image that opens fine in iPhoto to the desktop, the icon is a generic jpeg file.
    2) Both of these files open fine in photoshop, and when I re-import them to iPhoto, they then open without difficulty.
Any ideas? Have now installed both updates to iPhoto (6.0.2), but the problem persists...
    Thanks!!

    Hi rsmac,
I know that CMYK used to give iPhoto 5 problems along with grayscale photos. IPhoto needs to have the images in RGB for all photo printing and book orders.

  • New Mac mini terribly noisy during iPhoto slideshow

    Hi everybody
I just bought a new Mac mini Core 2 Duo. In normal operation it runs silently as expected. But when I run a slide show in iPhoto the fan starts turning faster and faster and soon makes an awful lot of noise (sounds almost like a hairdryer). Very annoying! The same happens if one of the animated OS X screen savers is active. Is there a problem with my Mac mini or does anybody else experience the same problem with the new Core 2 Duo Mac minis? Thanks for any information!
    Marc
    Message was edited by: amarc

I'm not sure that the algorithm for fan control is based solely on temperature - though my experience is with PPC minis rather than Intel models, so it may vary. However, on my PPC units, fan activity seems to derive from sustained CPU load, and iPhoto certainly seems to create that!
Which is not to say that your mini is not problematic, so I would be much inclined to contact Apple to discuss the problem. The absence of a local Apple store means that you'd have to do so by phone, but with a new C2D unit, I doubt you'd have any problem getting traction with that that issue, particularly if you ask for it to be escalated up from the first tier of support.
It would be interesting to know what Apple's comments are on the issue if you do discuss it with them, but if you manage to test out another C2D model and find it differs, I can see you might have more interest in simply having that unit replaced!

  • TERRIBLE LOOKING PRINTS USING CANON iP6700D & iPHOTO '08--HELP!!

I just bought a brand new iMac and am attempting to print pictures from iPhoto on my Canon iP6700D. The prints look HORRIBLE. Very grainy, low res, amateurish. When I use the Canon's direct print option (you can print directly from a smartdisk using the printer's LCD screen) the quality is AMAZING. So, I'm leaning toward a configuration issue with the iMac.
I did try printing from Preview to make sure it wasn't an issue withiPhoto, but had the same issues.
Does anyone have ideas on how I can solve this?
    Thanks!

Just to get you bye (until the issue with iPhoto is sorted out), Cannon has a Mac specific printing utility for your printer - EasyPhotoPrint. It should work great until iPhoto is working good for you.

  • Importing stills from iPhoto - terrible resolution?

I'm a complete novice.  I have tried searching on this and have not found any suitable information for this problem.  I have become tired of the instability of iMovie, and just downloaded the trial version  of FCP X.  I've starting tinkering with it and have noticed that when I bring stills in from iPhoto to the FCP timeline, the resolution is drastically lower than what I see in iMovie.  Low enough that I really cannot use the pics because they look awful.
Here is what I am doing (and not doing, as the case may be):
Open FCP, click on the camera button in the center-right toolbar (similar toolbar in iMovie), find the still I want from an event in iPhoto, and drag it into the FCP timeline.  FCP opens a window stating it does not recognise the video format and gives me a choice of sizes to use.  It seems that no matter what I choose, the resolution is bad.  Now, when I do the same exact thing in iMovie, it does not give me a window about video format and the resolution is not bad (adequate, anyway, for what I am doing) - far better than what I see in FCP.
So, what am I doing wrong?  I know FCP is supposed to be the premier NLE software (certainly a cut above iMovie), and so I am convinced that the problem is simply that I don't know what I'm doing.
    Thanks for your help.

OK, so I must confess to being an idiot.  On second shot, it appears FCP not only imports the stills as well as iMovie, but the quality is significantly better, not worse.
Here's what happened - I imported an entire project into FCP from iMovie, which turned out somewhat disasterous.  The quality of the stills and vid is not good, and the Ken Burns and transitions did not import well.  Then I began piecing the project back together from scratch in FCP, and became confused which project was the import and which was from scratch, and I thought I was positive I had it right.  In any case, importing projects from iMovie does not seem to go well.  Is this typical or is it more likely that I messed that up to?
Just for completeness - the new project (from scratch) is set up as follows: 1080p, 1920x1080, 23.98p (this is the format of the video the timeline will see).  The stills are mostly 3089x2048 jpeg files (digitized film photos).
So, the question has become two fold in my learnings here:
1 - any tips or tricks on importing an iMovie project into FCP for the best results?
2 - any general rules of thumb to follow when bringing stills into the FCP timeline for best resolution?  This is working fine, as stated above, but the higher the quality the better my completed project will go over.
    Thanks much!

  • Terrible view of iphoto journals in Safari?

Why the pictures because rotated and disaligned when I view a iPhoto journal in Safari? This happens since I use iPhoto 2 on iOS 7.03...

Send feedback to Apple and let the developers know. You can use this form:  Apple - iPhoto - Feedback
Perhaps later Photos releases will add more features, if enough users send feedback.

  • I have done something terrible!  nopen up, 'event'  but if I click on them a triangle with an exclamation point comes up.  What have I done, how can I get them back?

I have done something terrible!  now some of my photos will not open up, I can see them in the 'event' but if I click on some of them I get a gray triangle with an exclamation point.  What have I done and how do I rectify it?

The exclamation shows when the file path/link to the original file has been broken.  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How can I use "date modified" from metadata to date iphoto events?

I am very frustrated trying to move photos from windows to iMac.  I have a number of photos, all of them have some metadata with date created and date modified.  This worked well in Picasa in Windows and kept everything in order.  Now it seems iphoto will not read date modified or assigns date created (if there is no date in the metadata) as the date everything was switched over.  I looked over some of the wrongly organized photos (there are thousands) and realized that under the old sustem, Picasa in windows must have used either date created or date modified, which ever came earlier or perhaps whichever was available.  In iphoto, it doesn't read "date modified" or does this crazy thing where even if the modification date is before the creation date, puts all photos in the order or when they were brought over from windows.  I have a lot of photos dated September 18 -- thousands.
Is there any way to get either iphoto or some other program (I'm not terribly impressed by iphoto) that will properly organize the photos in an imac environment. In other words, I want a program to look at (1) creation date or (2) modification date (which-ever is earlier).
Even Picasa is now confused (in the mac envirnoment).
    Thanks,
    Mark

No, as this is file metadata not photo metadata.
You can adjust the date and time using the Photos -> Adjust Date and Time or even the Photos -> Batch Change command.
