IPhoto is totally messing up the color of photos!

the issue:
- I import from my camera to iPhoto
- drag photo to the desktop
- open and edit photo in Photoshop (and save it)
- drag the new version into iPhoto
While in Photoshop it looks fine and it also looks fine when I upload it to the web, but when I add it to iPhoto the color is all crazy... specifically the reds are exploding out of control!
Any fix for this?

Joseph,
Colors on computer is a NASTY complicated subject. Please don't balk at people for not wanting tread. That said: There are 3 preferences that are affecting the colors you see on screen (and in print outs). (iPhoto, Photoshop, System Prefs)
1. First check your settings within iPhoto
Go to Preferences> Advanced
you will probably see the checkbox enabled for 'Add ColorSync profile'
(i assume this embeds whatever profile is chosen within System Preferences>Displays>Color)
You probably want to leave this as is if you've been satisfied with your screen appearance and printouts.
NEXT the Nasty part:
Launch photoshop: You need to mess with "Color Settings" within Photoshop to avoid this color conversion.
(the command is under Photoshop>Color Settings...)
ASSUMING here your camera or iPhoto has already embedded a color profile…
Within Photoshop>Color Settings:
Under Color Management Policies be sure it's set to
'Preserve Embedded Profiles'
You may also wish check all the boxes that say "Ask when opening" this will alert you to missing or different profiles.
ASIDE:
By default all Adobe programs are set to mess with color (TRULY annoying)AND very hard to correct. Even opening the same image in Adobe programs color is inconsistent - at least as of CS 1.
So, Unfortunately, you may need to test a few times, with different settings to see which works best.
Try now opening/resaving a COPY of one of your iPhoto images. View it in iPhoto. If this works, your good to go.
If that doesn't do the trick:
You may also want to enable the Advanced Mode and change the engine to "Apple Color Sync" and intent to "Perceptual"
ALTERNATELY: you can choose the "Color Management Off" profile from the the Settings pop-up. (unfortunately despite the title, Pshop still won't really leave color alone)
SIDEBAR:
You should try all this copies of your originals (Duplicate first within iPhoto)
until you find a setting within Pshop that works.
The bad news, I've never found a way to set things so that it doesn't mess with color at all. Maybe someone else here can pipe in.
Good luck, if you have any joy, you should repost here to tell us what worked for you.

xandra

After a power failure while iPhoto was running, I get the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"  and iPhoto will not open???? held down the option and the command and tried to run what was ticked off and it just sits there with a spinning wheel and does nothing, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?

, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?
You could, but the error message is indicating that your iPhoto library needs repairing.
Check, if iPhoto will run, if you launch it on a new library. Hold down the alt/option key, while you launch iPhoto. Select to create a new library from the panel that will show. Can you create a new library? If yes, try again to fix the library. Which options have you tried from the Library First Aid panel, when you launched iPhoto with the option and command key held down?
If you have not tried "Rebuild"; do that next. But be sure to make a backup of your iPhoto library, before you try this.

When I zoom in on photo using iPhoto, how can I save the zoomed in photo please?  I would like a screen shot of my zoomed in photo - is this possible?.  Cropping doesn't give the same effect as zooming in and magnifying the photo.  Any help would be appreciated thank you.  I have an iMac

To take a screenshot of the zoomed photo, press either the key combination
⇧⌘3   for a screenshot of the full screen, or
⇧⌘4   to bring up a selection rectangle: select the section of the screen, that you want to save.

  • Can I recreate the 'colored pencil' Photo Booth effect in iPhoto ?

    Hey Folks,
I'm a very recent Mac convert (from XP / Linux dual boot PC) to a 20" iMac Intel and I'm loving the experience !
I would like to integrate all the great applications as much as I can, specifically I'd like to recreate the "colored pencil" effect available in Photo Booth on existing image files I have - I think it goes really well with Comic Life that came bundled with the iMac.
Is there a way to do that with iPhoto, or Core Image Fun House or something ?
    Thanks in advance...
    Johnny. A happy convert.
    20" iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.5GB RAM

Thanks for the reply Lori, I hadn't found the Comic Life effects (there's quite a few in the version I have also).
None of the ones I have seem to recreate the 'colored pencil' however -
here's what the effect does in Photo Booth (please excuse the frightening early morning snap...)
    <http://www.exito.co.uk/images/PhotoBoothColoredPencil.jpg>
That's what I'm trying to acheive with existing images.
I'm hoping it's possible with the inbuilt Core Image filtering (or an app utilising it)
as I'm guessing that's what Photo Booth is using under the hood.
    Johnny.

  • What could cause iPhoto '11 to not update the count of photos in my library?

    Hi folks,
I've been adding photos pretty consistently over the last few weeks, and I've noticed the number of photos in my iPhoto library never changes - see below. It's been at 14,774 photos for a number of weeks now. I just imported 17 additional photos, and the 14,774 count didn't change.
Has anyone experienced this? What is the solution to fix? What does it possibly mean, if anything?
    Thanks!

In the iPhoto Preferences, turn off items counts and then turn them back on again.

  • Google  is a total mess on the iPad

The website is horrible and the app is worse. There's so many things wrong with it I can't take the time here to completely describe everything that is wrong. But navigation is horribly unintuitive. There are google plus reviews of businesses, but no search tool on the page, only a list of a few businesses when you hit the Local icon. I wrote a review on a business page and published it to the public. It didn't go on the business page, it only got listed under my reviews
There are no links to the classic or desktop version on most pages. And when you find a page that does have the link, the next thing you select puts you right back in the mobile version of the web page and it's worthless- hardly has any of the stuff that the real page has.
The app is ridiculous. It shouldn't even be called Google+, all it has is the rolling public blabs, you can't get to hardly anything except that.
Google Plus is one of the worst websites I've ever been on using an iPad.
The one useful thing (reviews of businesses) is just a clunky mess, and it's actually very useful as there are a lot of reviews,  but it's so hard to use and unintuitive, and the navigation tools using an iPad are almost non-existent.

    pgoodwin wrote:
This mostly just to let iPad users know that Google Plus is not iPad friendly, so maybe they wouldn't waste their time.  Maybe it is misplaced though. If I could delete it I probably would.
Why can't you delete it? Do you know how?

  • Ok I know people are having this problem. I updated to the latest version of iPhoto and now I get the following:  "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable". Can someone please point me to a fix?

    This is super frustrating.
I tried to uninstall iPhoto and all related files and then reinstall but I keep getting the same result.
I have spent hours trying to fix this and nothing seems to work. I am pretty good with computers so I think this requires some expert help. I notice many people are stuck with this problem. Do I have to go and buy the disk from the store? How ironic that I was updating the software online so I could use photostream. Now the solution may be I need to go back to the "old school" way of doing things. Lucky I don't have a mac airbook. Lol.

Re-installing the app is unlikely to help because the problem is with the Library and not the application.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • A TOTAL MESS: Duplicated contacts

Hi folks, I have iOS5 on my iPad and syncing on with my Snow Leopard Macs and Mobile Me.
THIS SYSTEM IS A TOTAL MESS. The first thing that happened with enabling mobile me/ cloud with my iPad is that it wiped out ALL My Contacts.  I recovered them from a back up but now I'm getting all sorts of duplicate Contacts and I cannot tell which is what culprit.  The whole poing of syncing is to keep everything the SAME.   This CLoud thing is NOT ready for prime time.  How do I prevent this mess from taking place???

    Jefferis Peterson wrote:
I am simply trying to keep my contact lists synced between my desktop and laptop (Snow Leopard) and my iPad (iOS5).   About a 6 montsh ago, Apple asked me to activate or turn on  mobile me for sharing or something (and gave me the Cloud icon in Mobileme), and then when I installed iOS5 about a month ago, it wanted to make mobile me available, I think, on iCloud or something. Whatever the last step did, it first deleted all my contacts in Addressbook and then when I restored, it keeps duplicating them.
Snow Leopard and iCloud don't work together, your post is confusing enough that I really can't tell what you have done, but I know it is wrong.
Go to www.MobileMe.com and try to login, if you get told that you can't because your account moved to iCloud that is the first question answered, so if that is the case go on to www.iCloud.com and try to login there, if you can you should check that your contacts are there, post back.
PS iCloud came online on Jun 6 2011, so you could not have done this "6 months ago"

  • Envy TouchSmart m6-k025dx Sleekbook Win 8 recovery with totally messed up hard drive?

I made a recovery flash drive when I first got my Envy. Now, after totally messing up the hard drive and being unable to recover Windows 8 (not 8.1) with the flash drive, I've reformatted the drive and loaded the Windows 10 Tech Preview (which seems to be working quite well). However, Tech Previews don't last forever, and I'd really like to get back Win 8. I still have the recovery flash drive, but there's obviously a problem with the recovery image.
Does anyone know if a generic recovery image is available anywhere?
    TIA

    Hi there @RockDoctor,
and welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Since you say that your recovery media is not good, you can always try to get it direct from HP.
Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive
Also you can look at this if you have not removed the HP_tools partition:

  • IPhoto and multiple users - how to best manage photos across multiple users

I'm trying to fiure out the best way to setup photo storage on my new iMac.  I've been a mac user for many years but never used iPhoto, just managed the photos in the finder and dated the folder/events.  I use Photoshop and other image editing apps from time to time too.
My biggest difficulty I'm running into is both my wife an I take a lot of pictures on our phones.  We'd like to be able to access them equally but since we are set up as two diffenent users, I don't know the best way to download and access them.
Can anyone advise me if this is a good setup, or would ven work?
Move managed library to shared folder on mac so two users can access library?
    will that cause problems?
can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?
would the newly added photos sharing be automaticall be set to the folder sharing settings?  ie, view and edit for both users?
    This brings up other questions:
if i edit the photos with say photoshop, will the changes show up in iphoto?
would timemachine back the data up automatically?
when I upgrade to a new computer will everything work the same.
I'm sure I've missed something important so any advice would be great.
    Thanks!

Many people using the Shared Folder find that they have permissions issues which mean that they 'other' user can't see some part of the Library. Therefore, if you want to share the Library in that way it's best moved to an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set to ignore ownership and permissions.
can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?
    Yes.
would the newly added photos sharing be automaticall be set to the folder sharing settings?  ie, view and edit for both users?
    Yes.
if i edit the photos with say photoshop, will the changes show up in iphoto?
If you set this up corrrectly -  You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You will need to do this in both accounts.
would timemachine back the data up automatically?
TM can be set to back up externals. There are other options too, of course.
when I upgrade to a new computer will everything work the same.
Yes. Just plug in the extenal and point iPhoto at the external from the new machine.

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.
    “Welcome to Aperture 3.2
Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture.
Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture
    Current Library Location:
    Jadzia (home)   -----Pictures------Aperture Library
                                                      QUIT             UPGRADE”
I have heard horror stories  about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma.  I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop.  Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file.  For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.

Unfortunately, that's the way the cookie crumbles nowadays. Sir Jony Ive's GUI design for iOS7 has been met with much skepticism (to say the least). But until the company sees the compelling need for an adjustment or reversal, it "ain't happenin' ". So amble over to the feedback page ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/ ) and make your displeasure known to the company, OR make it known by not purchasing its products. Because as long as the iGadgets continue selling as fast as they can make them, they will see no need for change.
BTW, do note you are NOT talking to Apple here. This is just a user-to-user forum.
Edit: for now, you can also try out any of the alternate calendaring apps available in the App Store.

I've managed to get back to Pages 4.3 on my iMac and delete the downgrade Pages 5, which makes a total mess of photo-rich documents prepared with Facing Pages (most of mine),  but how to I get back to the old version of Pages on my iPad so that I can work on sections away from home. At least on my old PC, Word maintained compatability with old versions. Beginning to regret having switched.

Thanks for your help. What is really irritating is that Apple give a big hurray about what they have added as "new"  in Pages 5 (most of it pretty useless) without telling you of the myriad things they have deleted.  If they had shown the list your gave the link to, I doubt may regular users would risked going to Mavericks with its auto upgrade. My partner got the message in time and is sticking with the earlier operating systems and Pages on Mac and iPad. Lucky girl.
I have found a way to use my iPad to add chapters written while on the move to reports on my iMac Pages 4.3. If I write it on the new Pages on the iMac (don't seem to be able to revert there), the send the report as an email in WORD format (not Pages) and download it in the Text Editor, then cut and paste into the story on the iMac. Hardly elegant but it works.

Have you checked the ink cartridges and made sure the nozzles are clear? Are you able to print from outside of iPhoto with the correct color?
Try the following: make temporary copy of the library and do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
