IPhoto issues after 10.5 install, thumbnails but no image files

After installing Leopard I have found that random photos from different events in iPhoto 7.1.1 have completely disappeared. OK, not completely -- the thumbnail images remain but the image file is completely gone. Vanished, it would appear, from my hard drive. A spotlight search reveals nothing. I am finding more and more missing as I go about my business. I click on an image to edit or use in iWeb and I get a gray exclamation point.
I don't think that I have synched my iPod video since upgrading to Leopard so perhaps there is hope of recovery? Anyone know what is going on?

    Aperture import plug-in won't run.  After examining my library the number of image files stays at "undetermined" and the import button stays greyed out.  Any thoughts?

    Others have the same issue, with the import button being grayed out.  My trail copy expired, but I believe by poking around in the options and selecting another Aperture library and re-selecting, I was able to continue.
    The problem is common enough, that hopefully Adobe will address.  In the mean time, try repairing your Aperture library, checking permissions, exporting a subset of your library for a test, or try putting that library subset on an external drive.  (Can usually avoid permissions issues.)

  • Is it possible to add a thumbnail to an image file with core graphics ?

    Hi,
    I'm writing a small image processing application.
    For image reading and writing I'm using core graphics (CGImageSourceRef / CGImageDestinationRef).
    Several image formats like jpeg or tiff provide the option to store a thumbnail in the file.
    To get this thumbnail I'm using
    CGImageSourceCreateThumbnailAtIndex( ... )
    which works fine so far. If there is no thumbnail in the image it is created
    with this function. Now, in the case there was no thumbnail in the image I would like to store
    the created thumbnail in the image file when I write it to the disk. So far I failed to find a function in core graphics
    to perform this task. In the CGImageDestinationRef documention it is only mentioned, that thumbnails
    are written into the output file, but not how to add these.
    I fear I'm overseeing something very trivial ...
    Regards,
    ingo

    place your original image in a new file as a smart object and do the same for the reflection (made by Transforming, reducing the opacity and introducing a mild horizontal motion blur) on its own layer, then:
    by double clicking on the smart object in the layers panel and returning to the original image, any change you make in the original and save, will automatically update the upright image and its reflection.
    Nice one Norm.  Five Kudos points to you.

  • 2 iphoto libraries? and viewing all thumbnails but can't view landscape

    We have 2 users set up on the computer and I have recently noticed that the iphoto libraries in each of the users/pictures folder don't seem to be the same size. Are these truly 2 different libraries based on which account our photos were imported into?
    AND, my recent imports into iPhoto seems to be behaving 'funny'. I can view all the thumbnails, but, when I try to open any landscape photos, the picture flashes, and then I only see a black screen. The portrait photos in the same event are viewing without issue? Any ideas?

    iPhoto is based on a database. Once you import/copy the photos into the library you can add a photo to multiple items, i.e. albums, books, calendars, without having to duplicate the original image file. All management of the photo is done within iPhoto and it's database. All access to photos for use in or out of iPhoto is done from within iPhoto. There's no need to get into the library via the Finder.
    The following is from one of Terence Devlin’s posts on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It’s the definitive treatise on the subject.
    Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
    Accessing the iPhoto Library Folder directly has never been supported in any version of iPhoto.
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    For Users of 10.5 and later
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    (Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    For users of 10.4 and later ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
    For users of 10.6 and later:
    You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and later:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    All of the above are a: faster and b: Safer than rooting around in the old Library Folder.

  • [SOLVED] Thumbnail view of image files in Thunar and PCManFM

    Hello all!
    I have a question about the way Thunar and PCManFM handles thumbnails of image files. I understand that Thunar users can use the thunar-thumbnailers package to get previews of all sorts of different file formats. But on the thumbnailers page it is claimed that Thunar should be able to make thumbnails of JPEG's, PDF's etc. without this add-on. This is not happening for me even though I have evince, ImageMagick etc. installed.
    Now, I tried to install PCManFM again after some time, since this used to be my fm-of-choice. And here, thumbnails show up for JPEG's, PDF's and what-else right away. So I opened Thunar again and browsed to the same folders I had visited with PCManFM, and this time Thunar gave me thumbnails as well!! But only for the files in folders I had visited with PCManFM
    Is this expected behaviour? Is it a bug in Thunar? I want to keep using Thunar (I think), but I would also like this thumbnailing business to work automagically as it does in PCManFM. So I'm just wondering if I should report this to the Thunar folks, since they seem to claim that it should work without the -thumbnailers add-on, or if I should just install the -thumbnailers package and shut up ^^
    Cheers

    Thank you! I installed tumbler and got thumbnails right away. This seems like the proper way to do it.

  • Help needed trying make thumbnails from large Image Files

    I posted this to the Flex message bored, too. I didn't notice
    the Actionscript 3.0 until after. Sorry. Anyway, I have some
    ActionScript 3.0 code, created with Flex that will load a large
    JPEG image (say 3000x2000 pixels) that I'm trying to create a 100
    pixel thumbnail. I have the code working where I generate the
    thumbnail, but it's not maintaining the aspect ratio of the
    original image. It's making it square, filling in white for the
    part that doesn't fit.
    I've tried just setting the height or width of the new
    image, but that doesnt render well, either.
    To see what I'm talking about, I made a screen shot, showing
    the before image, and the rendered as thumbnail image:
    Image of demo
    app at Flickr.
    Now, there's a few things important to note. I'm saving the
    thumbnail off as a JPEG. As you can see in my sample application,
    the original renders fine with the proper aspect ratio, it's when
    I'm copying the bytes off the bitmapdata object, where I need to
    specify a width and height, that the trouble starts. I've also
    tried using .contentHeight and .contentWidth and some division to
    manually specify a new bitmapdatasize, but these values seem to
    always have NaN.
    private function makeThumbnail():void{
    // create a thumbnail of 100x100 pixels of a large file
    // What I want to create is a a thumbnail with the longest
    size of the aspect
    // ratio to be 100 pixels.
    var img:Image = new Image();
    //Add this event listener because we cant copy the
    BitmapData from an
    /// image until it is loaded.
    img.addEventListener(FlexEvent.UPDATE_COMPLETE,
    imageLoaded);
    img.width=100;
    img.height=100;
    img.scaleContent=true;
    img.visible = true;
    // This is the image we want to make a thumbnail of.
    img.load("file:///C:/T5.jpg");
    img.id = "testImage";
    this.addChildAt(img, 0);
    private function imageLoaded(event:Event):void
    // Grab the bitmap image from the Input Image and
    var bmd:BitmapData =
    getBitmapDataFromUIComponent(UIComponent(event.target));
    //Render the new thumbnail in the UI to see what it looks
    theImage.source = new Bitmap(bmd); //new Bitmap(bmd);
    public static function
    getBitmapDataFromUIComponent(component:UIComponent):BitmapData
    var bmd:BitmapData = new
    BitmapData(component.width,component.height );
    bmd.draw(component);
    return bmd;
    }

    Take a look at this post:
    I'll have to say the smoothing of the thumb is not perfect, but maybe in combination with your code.. you get good results.

  • Will iPhoto '09 (8.1.2) allow me to resize image files to 60 kb?

    I'm sorry if this is a very simple task but I've searched and cannot find an answer.  I need to be able to upload some photos to the Gardenweb site and they say that the maximum size of image files allows is 60 kb.  I searched my iPhoto help and could find nothing about resizing photos for uploading to websites - I also did a Google search but the only program that is suggested for this is called Irfanview and only works with Windows.
    I would be very grateful if someone can point me to how I can do this with iPhoto or, alternatively, another program that I could download that would allow me to resize my images.
    Cheers

    Hi Terence ... As I'd already exported the jpeg to my Desktop I decided to try with another image from iPhoto.
    I selected the image in iPhoto then went to File - Export and on the ensuiung 'File Export' tab chose JPEG, quality LOW: Size CUSTOM and then set Maximum dimension to 500 px.  I then exported the image to my Desktop and Get Info shows that the file size is 16 KB on disk.  I repeated the exercise changing the quality to MEDIUM but left everything else the same.  This resulted in a file size of 29 KB on disk.  I repeated the exercise again, changing the quality to HIGH.  This resulted in a file size of 45KB on disk.  Finally, I repeated the exercise changing the quality to MAXIMUM, which resulted in a file size of 168 KB on disk.  So, I now know that I can export my images from iPhoto and, following your advice, set the maximum dimension of the image to 500 px and, even using High quality for the JPEG I will get a file size that is well within the maximum file size permitted by the website.
    I don't know whether it's relevant but the original image was 3.3MB.
    Thank you so much for your help!  I was beginning to feel extremely dumb not being able to figure this one out.

  • IPhoto issues after Leopard install...

    I downloaded Leopard not long ago and I am having some problems iPhoto. It seems like my libraries and photos are there, and I can see the thumbnails. But when I go to view the photo I get the big grey box with a ? in it. Is there a setting I am missing or did something go wrong when I upgraded to Leopard? Any advice or direction will be much appreciated. Thanks.
    --Matt

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where did you download Leopard from? And what version was it?
    How did you install it, Archive and Install or Erase and Install?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto Issues After Installing Lion

    I installed Lion onto my MacBook Pro and my iMac yesterday. Everything seems okay except my issues with iPhoto. I ended up upgrading my iPhoto because I thought that was the issue. My iMac's iPhoto worked perfectly.  My MBP on the other hand, did not.  The main iPhoto library works fine, but I have another library (sitting on my desktop that I pulled from my extern HD back-up) that I was using prior to the Lion install that has most of my pics on it. I have tried everything to get the pics to come up, but nothing shows up and I have to force quit the program. I tried even opening up and upgrading the iphoto database on my iMac to see if it was just a MBP issue, but it's not working. I hope I didn't lose my pics! Please help!

    I came to the genius bar, and we were able to find a way around this issue.  Out of the two iPhoto libraries that I had, I was having issues with only one (the one with the majority of my photos).  Assuming you have an iPhoto library that DOES work, follow the following instructions for the fix.
    Find the icon of the iPhoto library that you are unable to open.  CTRL+click on the icon and select "Show Package Contents."
    You will see a folder called "Originals."  Copy that to your desktop.  Then, open the iPhoto library that does work (hold down OPTION key while you click the iPhoto program logo to allow you to choose which iPhoto library to open).
    Once iPhoto is open, drag and drop the "Originals" folder from your desktop to your iPhoto for importing. Once you comfirm that you have all of your photos, feel free to delete the old iPhoto library that you weren't using (double check to make sure to delete the correct one), as well as the "Originals" folder.
    Pro: You have all of your photos back all in one place.
    Con: You have to reorganize all of your photos and you lose the folders that they were in.
    Good luck!

  • Apple Store Refuses to Diagnose Hardware Issue after Boot Camp Installed

    I previously reported an issue in the Boot Camp Beta forum, but figured I share this with other MBP users as well. After loading the updated firmware, running boot camp to partion my drive, I installed Windows XP Professional. During the install, the screen would go dark, and come back at irregular intervals, as if there was a video sync problem of something. I managed to get XP installed, and booted it and loaded the updated drives from the Boot Camp driver CD which I had earlier created. Subsequent attempt to use the XP installation result in a constantly blank screen, with only occational glitches, as if there is some activity coming out of the GPU, but it's not working correctly.
    This is what led me to take my machine to my local (15 miles away) Apple Retail Store (Washington Sqaure, Tigard, Oregon), and attempt to show the problem to a "genius". HOWEVER... As soon as I mentioned "Boot Camp" and XP, they went into the whole "public beta, blah, blah, blah", "not supported", etc. I tried to explain that I was not reporting a SOFTWARE issue with Boot Camp, but rather a HARDWARE ISSUE which is exposed on my machine only after using BOOT CAMP to partition the hard drive, and then installing Windows XP. All I get was "Well, it works fine in OSX, and Boot Camp is Public Beta, so there's nothing we're going to do". Obviously, I'm livid. And, will pursuing any and all avenues to bring this problem to Apple Management attention. First it was Mark Pienpakdee the "genius" who tried to help me, and then I was further rebuked by Mark Macsurak, Assistant Manager. So, I'm left with broken hardware which won't work correctly running Windows, and no recourse until Boot Camp isn't "Public Beta". What a load of crap. I was so mad, I didn't even bother buying the extra AC adapter I was planning on picking up. ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I was absolutly shocked that the "genius" didn't react with anything like "wow, what an interesting problem, let's see if we can diagnose it". He didn't even want to see me boot XP to show the problem, only wanted to see that OSX was working normally and send me on my way.
    If you have had similar problem at the Washington Square store in Oregon, be sure to let them know by sending e-mail to [email protected], I know I will...
    Eric

    If you are going to send an e-mail you should send it to [email protected] However, nobody from Apple is going to send you a response. The Software is Beta which means it is not ready for Prime Time (Also that means that the drivers are beta too). Plus they say before you decide to install any of this in their write ups that they do not and will not provide any support for BootCamp and/or Windows. So they are right not to do anything if the computer works like it is supposed to under OS 10.4.6. Now they might take a look at somethings when OS 10.5 comes out if it has BootCamp in it. They may have something similiar in it, or it might be a perfected BootCamp. However, I doubt that they will ever provide any support for Windows. There has been some talk that Microsoft is looking into supporting Windows on the MAC. However, as far as I have heard no decision on that has come out as of yet.

  • IPhoto issues after upgrading to OS X Mavericks!!

    I just upgraded to the OS X Mavericks on my imac and when I open up iphoto I get a message that says: Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade.  Then it gives me the option to quit or upgrade!  It already looks like it's been upgraded due to the new blue icon. I'm afraid to hit upgrade for fear that I lost all of my photos!  Does this mean that I have lost all of my photos??   I also did this on my macpro and had no issues with Iphoto.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

    Most Simple Back Up:
    Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
    Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Need help on a really weird issue after ios 7 install

    Ok I installed ios 7 yesterday without any issues except personal feelings regarding the new os but I digress. After the install I started exploring and found a glitch, hack, conspiracy, whatever you want to call it. When I open safari there are 5 seperate "app like boxes" or shortcuts that have all Miscrosoft windows material/information. I have a 4s and my wife the 5 both with ios 7 and her's is not like this. Instead she has a few shortcuts to a few different apps that were not picked by her. I called apple care and they said they never heard of it nor did they have a fix, just to do a hard reset. They also mentioned that if I had a hotmail/outlook material installed prior to the new ios install that this could of caused it but backed away from that resolution as I further described my issue. After the hard reset and 3hrs later, no dice, same issue. Any suggestions? I hope I explained it for you guys to inderstand but this is truly a must see to beleive/understand.

    Thanks Josh.
    I finally tracked this down last night with help from the folks at actionscript.org.  I hadn't deactivated my Debugger which runs off of a desktop AIR application - so the server was trying to reach my localhost to run its trace statements.  Deactivating the Debugger fixed the problem.
