Iphoto Itunes Organization

I love the way itunes organizes music via it makes folders & folders of artist & album all organized in the finder, i am trying to do the same with all my photos....is there anyway way iphoto can super automaticly organize my pictures like itunes & create folders in the finder? also...can it update on the fly & import & delete on the fly like itunes does???? ALL reflecting what the library has compared to the created folders it made automaticlly????? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi Powerbook,
iPhoto works differently than iTunes.
This is how iPhoto organizes...
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

How do I load photos & Music to my iPhone 3G from iPhoto /iTunes?
If I want to use photos as wallpaper on the phone do they have to be resized or can I just load them?

With your iphone plugged into itunes go to the tables for music, photos, etc and set to sync with the album, playlist you want.
Sounds like you might need to read the owners manual:

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

  • I want to transfer all my iPhoto, iTunes, contacts, etc. files from my MacBook, which I am selling to a MacBook Pro. What is the easiest and safest method of achieving this? Can the files backed up on Time Machine be transferred to the Pro?.

I want to transfer all my iPhoto, iTunes, contacts, documents, etc. files from my MacBook, which I am selling, to a MacBook Pro. What is the easiest and safest method of achieving this? Can the files backed up on Time Machine from the MacBook be transferred to the Pro in some way? I would like to capture the files as they appear on the MacBook, such as "Events" in iPhoto and the various song categories within iTunes without having to rename them all once saved on the Pro, which is the case with photos when I simply save them to thumb drive and import them to the Pro. Sny advice would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Rob.

    Michael,
Thanks for all your assistance. There is no need for apologies, Migration Assistant did indeed create a second account for the MacBook data. It has just taken me some time to figure out how to access it. I now have all the MB data in one account and the MBP files in another, which suits me fine. In fact, it is an advantage in my case as it keeps the private and business aspects separated.
I will however try the fatcatsoftware to transfer all the iPhoto files to my iMac, where I keep my main photo library. and it will be of help to keep the events, etc in the transfer. As far as iTunes is concerned, I have HomeSharing on all my computers and this has obviated the need to worry about playlists being transferred successfully. However, HomeSharing did not appear to share the iPhone/iPod apps that were stored on the MB and although these have now come across with the new MacBook account on the MBP, I was wondering whether my iPhone and iPod will be recognised by the MBP and sync with it? Will I need to have the MB account open to achieve this or will the MBP recognise and sync with the iPhone/iPod automatically irrespective of which account is open?
Thanks for the tip on deauthorising my iTunes account from the MB before sellng. This I will do and I believe the best way to remove all of my data from the hard drive is to reinstall the MacOSX operating system software. Is this the right approach to securely delete everything?
Thanks again for sharing your expertise and your guidance through this exercise.
    Best regards,
    Rob.

  • Why does iPhoto 6 organize as rolls now?

Hi! I recently imported my iPhoto 5 library to my iPhoto 6. While all of the pictures and everything imported just fine, my organizing is all messed up. Now instead of iPhoto organizing it by date in the files, it organizes it by roll. My iPhoto 5 did not do this and I was just wondering how I could change it. Thanks!

    Hi Cameron,
This is how iPhoto 6 organizes in the Finder now. Nothing you can do to change it.
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

  • IPhoto, iTunes, and Time Machine

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running Mavericks. The Mini has a 200gb drive.  Is it better to have iPhoto, iTunes and Time Machine on an external hard drive? I understand it doesn't matter where the location is as long as you have adequate drive space. That is not what I am asking. Another words, you have a separate external drives for EACH one.  Does it make sense to have separate drives for iPhoto, iTunes and TM. All of these external drives plugged into the Mini. I am thinking of the recovery as well as if one drive crashes then you are not dead in water,
I am thinking this way because iPhoto alone can get fairly large as well as iTunes. It makes sense to me to have separate drives for each one. Anyone else have this type of setup at home?

Thanks for the response. I understand that I would need a backup of all three drives.  However, I was asking if it is better to have your iPhoto and iTunes libraries on separate drives versus using 1 large drive to hold the data. The other point, iPhoto and iTunes can get fairly large in size over time. So, do you use 1 large external drive or use 2 separate drives.  Obviously, I know that when a drive crashes, you may or may not be able to recover any data off of it. Obviously, I know that you need a backup of the drives in case of drive failure.
I would like to know if other Apple users have separate drives for iPhoto, iTunes and TM?  If so, which manufacturer are you using?

  • To let iTunes organize, or not to organize... and problems with folders...

Okay, I have a question that I can't seem to get a good answer to.
I am a manager of a couple of local bands that are always sending me MP3's. Most of the time, its jus part of a song, with no ID tags. I have a folder on my desktop that I save all the songs to, where I customize the filename of each song so I know when it was sent to me, what the song is called (today), and what band sent it.
Right now I have iTunes set up to organize my music.
Here's my problem. I want to be able to see the music in iTunes. So I tried dragging the folder over... okay, except now the music is showing up with blank artist and song info. BAD. And then I figured out that iTunes doesn't 'monitor' this folder, as I saved new music, and it didn't turn up in iTunes. So I dragged the folder over again, now things are showing up TWICE - thank you very much for making my life difficult. And since they aren't showing up all in one place, I can't go in an delete them all and start again.
What I REALLY want, and I'm not sure if this is possible or not, is to have a FOLDER in the iTunes library called mybands, and have all the songs there. Now, songs are constantly added (sent via email, saved to this folder). So I want iTunes to monitor this folder and show the recent additions. But I also want iTunes to delete songs from this folder when I delete in the Library, instead of doing that stupid 'show file' thing.
I'd like to be able to make all the changes to the ID3 tags there too.
Can I do this? If so, does the folder have to be in the iTunes library folder to make this happen? I'd LIKE to continue to use the iTunes organize my music feature... I've never turned it off so I don't know what will work and what wont.
    Thanks.
    iTunes 6.042   Windows XP Pro

If you turn off the auto-organize feature, then you can allow tracks to reside in whatever folder you want. Trouble is, iTunes doesn't do ANYTHING to display tracks by folder - only tags are used.
Overall this is a sensible approach - in my 15,500 song library I certainly don't care what the folder/file names are, that would be a horrible organizational scheme when there are so many useful parameters to use (genre, year, compilations, comments etc.)
I would recommend that you install a second media player that is "folder centric" like Winamp for use with the files sent to you by bands. You can setup a "watch folder" and listen to tracks in Winamp without disturbing iTunes in the least.
An alternative that requires a bit of work is to manually tag MP3s in the folder BEFORE dragging them into iTunes. A utility like ID3-TagIT can be used to add some special tags en masse to allow you to identify songs in the "mybands" folder, etc.

  • Path between Home folder & iPhoto & iTunes software is gone: can't access.

It appears I accidentally obliterated my Home folder, and in so doing, iPhoto & iTunes can no longer access my photos & playlists, although all the files appear intact in the directories --even though I recreated the Home folder with the same user name. (I am the sole user/administrator.)
Would appreciate any advice regarding restoring function.
    Thanks,
    Karin

    Hi, Terence,
    Thanks for responding!
Yes, in fact everything in my Home folder appears affected.
I am not very practiced at backing up & had not done so in a while. I thought I could back up my entire home folder (including iTunes & iPhoto) by dragging the Home folder icon into another Finder window with my LaCie external as the destination, cause usually when I do this with other folders the original remains & the file gets copied. There was a whooshing sound & the folder disappeared entirely from both originating & destination windows... (Also my LaCie said it did not have sufficient space.)
I then may have compounded the error when I found out in a Mac OSX manual that Go-to-Folder, Shift, control, H would show my Home folder. When it in fact reappeared this way, I tried to use it to access iPhoto with no success (including a zipped version of an earlier backup to the same hard drive). In between all this I rebooted at least twice....
All the sub folders/files in question seem to be intact (I have files of rolls, originals, modified, etc, to say nothing of the songs - which are not as great a concern cause I have most of them on CDs) - just no way to open them in the respective applications
After reading some of the other posts, I downloaded Library Manager & my current plan is to backup to DVD all my individual rolls & then somehow try to rebuild the library, but from what I read, I will lose all my "albums" etc.
If you have any better advice, your help is much appreciated.

  • Time Machine restore didn't restore iPhoto, iTunes, Documents folder

    Hi all,
Just got a new HD installed after a random fail, and restored everything last night from a complete TM backup from 3 hrs before the offending problem. Unfortunately, though nearly all of the files "came back," the iPhoto, iTunes, and Documents files are gone!
My question is, after reading the FAQ's in this forum, whether the problem is that Snow Leopard was installed by the Geniuses in the HD swap process. If I throw in the Leopard disc (if I can find it!), and follow the FAQ steps, will that bring me back to my original state? I have space to do a complete backup of what's left on there, and I haven't yet done a TM backup since before the fail, so...
    - Should I do a complete backup on the non-TM external HD, and then erase the drive and start over with the Leopard disc? This is a serious investment of time, so I want to make sure it's the solution I need.
    - Should I expect that TM did in fact backup all of these files that are now missing?
    - After that backup is done, is there any reason to expect that I shouldn't be able to install Snow Leopard again?
Thanks for your help, sorry if this too common of a question, but I would love your feedback.

Sweet, that worked and the data are there! Should I plod on ahead through the Step 14 directions then?
Sorry for overlooking that networking aspect. I backup through an EHD USB-connected to the Airport, which is partitioned into both a TM and drag-and-drop side.
I'm assuming I go ahead with this next then, and, barring anything not transferring, just erase the past TM backups so I can start afresh:
    # a. Boot from the Leopard/Snow Leopard disc. Insert it and either wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the "Install" icon; or power down, then start up normally while holding down the "C" key. That takes a few minutes.
    # b. Then select your language from the list shown. On the next screen, select Utilities from the top menubar.
    # c. If you're restoring to a new disk, or one that may not be formatted properly, select Disk Utility from the list of Utilities in the menubar, and format the drive: Select the top line (with the make and size), click the Partition tab and select 1 Partition from the the pop-up menu under Volume Scheme.
Give it a name (probably Macintosh HD) under Volume Information, and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the Format unless you're certain you need Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Click the Options button below the box, and select GUID for an Intel Mac, or Apple Partition Map for a PPC Mac and click the OK button, then Apply. That should only take a few moments.
    # d. Select Restore from Backups, and follow the on-screen instructions:
    # e. You'll be prompted to select the disk where your TM backups are (or search for a Time Capsule). If you're restoring from a network drive, click the Airport icon in the Menubar and join the network.
    # f. You'll next be prompted to select which of the backups you want, and, if you backed-up multiple OSX drives/partitions, which one to restore from. There will be a list showing the date & time of each completed backup, and the version of OSX on that backup. Note that the times on the list may not match your current time zone: they may be shown in U.S. Pacific Time.
    # g. You're also prompted to select a destination (probably your internal HD), then a confirmation, then the process starts.
    # h. If you want to monitor the installation, select Window, then Show Log and Show All logs from the menubar.

  • ITunes organize home movies including mobile format with AppleTV & iPhone?

I use both AppleTV and iPhone to watch and play home movies. I currently organize my home movies under TV Shows and then organize each movie by year. For example - I may have 6 home movies under "Home Movies 2008" and 7 movies under "Home Movies 2009." iTunes organizes the home movies like it would TV Shows so I can see how many movies I have under each heading.
What is the best way to organize movies that are formatted to play on my iPhone? I may have the same name for a movie in 720p and iPhone format. Anyone currently organizing a successful way when utilizing AppleTV and iPhone? Recommendations?

maybe you and apple disagree when something is hd
apple sd movies are around 853x480 pixels

  • How to properly manage videos between iPhone - iPhoto - iTunes

Maybe Im going about this all wrong, but this is what I do.  I take pics and videos on my iphone.  Eventually I plug it into the computer and iPhoto asks me to import.  I select all the items I want to import so all gets put into iPhoto.
iTunes is a different matter.  A few months ago I saw my iCloud account was full.  So I realized that I could back up my iphone to iTunes and then import everything to iPhoto and after importing, tell iPhoto to delete those videos and photos from my Camera Roll.  No big deal cause its all imported into iPhoto.  Not only that but now my camera roll was not so full, so my iCLoud was not packed.
However I notice that videos are not backed up.  In other words, when Itunes backs up my stuff, what I mean is, all my pictures get moved out of Camera Roll and into an album, such as Last Imported or any event that I created for it.  But only pics are present, no videos.  Thus I have to go to iPhoto to view my videos.
I guess it makes sense, otherwise my iphone storage itself would fill up quite quickly.
Is this the best way to manage this?
The one thing that worries me, is that now my MBA is filling up and I have this 27GB .... oh wait, its a 27GB iMovie file!  Man Im confused...

Cannot address your Mac questions, but as far as iCloud is concerned, you are correct that video files are not in the iCloud backup. Those are only found in a regular iTunes backup. And video files are handled on a different tab in iTunes, not the same one as photos. You also would access the photos in the Photo library, while you access the videos in the Videos app.

  • From Events (apple iPhoto) to Organizer

How to move my photos from iMac iPhoto (all regrouped into Events) to Element 9 Organizer and is it recommended?..
I bought the version of Element 9 from Apple store and it only  downloaded the editing part which works well, but I would like to have both Events in Apple's iphoto and photoshop Organizer

When buying Photoshop Elements from the App Store, it does not come with the Organizer. Did you install the Organizer by some other method?

  • How iTunes organizes movie folder

Does anyone know how to change the way iTunes organizes it's Movies folder? I have the same version of iTunes (10.1) running on two different Windows 7 computers, and I've set my Preferences the same ("Keep iTunes Media folder organized" is on, and "Copy file to iTunes Media folder..." is on). BUT, on one PC, all the videos are in the "Movies" folder and on the other PC, iTunes has created one sub-folder for each video (named with the name of the video clip file!).
How do I prevent iTunes from creating all those subfolders?
    Please help.

When I get a bunch of related video files that are not really feature length movies I treat them as a *TV Show*. For movies from the same series a scheme such as *<Series Name> # - <Title>* will order and group them together both in iTunes and the Movies folder.

  • I had my OSX upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 at the Apple store.  Shouldn't I have received along with that a newer version of iPhoto, iTunes, etc.?

    Hi, I'm new here.
I had my OSX upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 at the Apple store.  Shouldn't I have received along with that a newer version of iPhoto, iTunes, etc.?
    Thanks.

If there is an upgrade to any of macs products that you own they will notify you when there is an update. To check if you have any updates go to the app store and click on "Updates", or open the program you want to check and click the "check for update" option in the dropdown menu. Hope this helps.

  • ITunes organization trouble

Hey, this is my first time posting here, so I hope someone can help me.
I've used iTunes for a couple years now, and I never had any trouble with it.
But lately there seems to be some error with the organization, iTunes won't take off 'The' in the beggining of an artist name, at least not all the time, so, for example, when I want to listen to a song from 'The Killers', I have to look in K first, where are some of the songs, and then look on T, where the rest of them are. I don't know why this is happening, it's pretty annoying 'cause most of my artist that start with 'The' seem to have split in to two groups, and I use iTunes organization, so my folders are all split too.
Anyone know how to solve this?

I ran into this as well. It seems, when I originally upgraded to iTunes 9, my organization remained intact. All my new music, movies and TV Shows were all going to an external drive I have with a folder called iTunes Music. Then when I upgraded to 9.0.1., I just recently noticed that all new "media" was going to a folder in my Music Folder called "iTunes Media". In further looking at the folder, I saw very specific orgazational structure. I am reading that somehow this occurs when prompted with the option of new iTunes 9 organization, however, I never opted for this organization and upgrading to iTunes 9.0.1 seems to have triggered it and redirected all my new media to the new folder located on my local internal drive as opposed to the external.
I too have the same question. How do I get everything to point back to the external drive, AND, move all the media that is now in the new iTunes Media folder over to the folder on my iTunes drive and have it all properly organized. I've tried a few ways, but it keeps leaving out the newly added content. Anyone have any suggestions?
