Iphoto jumbled after importing from dropbox

I have a macbook air OSX 10.9.3
iphoto 9.5.1
dropbox (up to date)(2.8 GB)
i have iphoto syncing with my dropbox, and camera uploads on for dropbox
my dropbox was full, so i went online and deleted the photos that were duplicates
later, i went on my iphoto and saw that the files were missing for a lot of my pictures. i figured that when i deleted files from dropbox online, they synced with my iphoto and deleted them from my computer.
so, i restored my iphoto folder on dropbox to get the pictures back. then, i opened the iphoto library from my dropbox folder in Finder which caused pictures to begin importing back. I had to do this repeatedly because iphoto would only import a few pictures at once.
Now the pictures are all jumbled - there are repeats for some but all my photos still have not downloaded. The Event names are long strings of letters and numbers, and people's individual faces from photos downloaded as separate photos.
i downloaded my camera uploads to my computer then deleted that off my dropbox. dropbox still has tons of multiples of photos, and iphoto library is the only folder with pictures. i also don't have the pictures still on my phone because I deleted them after my last import (plugging in the cord to my computer).
is there a quick way to clean this up? what should i have done differently? if i delete the faces and extra photos from my iphoto now will i mess anything up? what is a better way to back up your pictures?

You can start over by trashing the iPhoto library, creating a new one and importing photos into it - this will have no connection to the photos in the original library
and you need to purchase an external hard drive about 2 1/2 times the size of your main drive and start running Time Machine with its default settings so you have hourly backups available
it is probably that you can start the new library with the masters folder from the corrupted library - it probably contains your photos organized by events according to how they were first imported

  • Destroyed Library in iPhoto 08 after import from 09

This is a bummer: I have iPhoto 09 on my new MacBook and 08 on my iMac at home. As I imported my pictures from "on the road" on my MacBook, I made the library available and opened it from my iMac (08). I then imported the photos from the 09 library.
The first time I did this, the pictures from 09 were in the 08 library, but no thumbnails were shown at all. So I deleted them and did the import again. And presto, they showed up fine.
The next time I started up iPhoto, it indicated that "this new version... rebuild Thumbnails". I cancelled out, as I needed to send a photo by email. At the next start, I went ahead and let it "rebuild" (whatever). After that, only the last three events - i.e. the ones I had imported from 09 - were visible.
I did a library rebuild. I purchased "iPhoto Library Manager" and did a rebuild via that. Nothing helped. The photos are still there, but the entire library seems to be completely shot.
Before I laboriously start re-importing all the pictures from the library - does anyone have any other ideas? Delete some file to have iPhoto rebuild it, etc? I would very much like to not have to redo everything - I've read other people's accounts of re-imports and they are a real pain - especially with 50+gigs of photos.
    Thank you!

    Hans
I was hoping for an error message with iPhoto Library Manager not iPhoto. It will usually cough something up if it has a problem.
My TM certainly does back up iPhoto. I'm not sure why yours wouldn't. Try post on the TM forum here

for more info and help with that.
Here's my back up strategy: pick and choose as you think fit:
My Library lives on my iMac.
It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.

  • Merge JPEG and RAW after import from iPhoto

    Hi,
camera is set to shoot JPEG + RAW, iPhoto manages after import from camera as two separate files.
I want to transition from iPhoto to Aperture.
After importing from iPhoto into Aperture, is there any chance to merge the files in a way similar to how Aperture merges jpeg + raw when importing directly from camera?
    Thx
    Axel

When I click on Faces, it's empty, the import from iPhoto forget to import faces?
    Hello Kris,
How did you imort from iPhoto? If you import using the Aperture Apllication menu
         File -> Import -> iPh.oto Library
then all your Faces should be transferred from iPhoto.
Which of the two buttons in Aperture do you use to show your "Faces"? There is the "Faces" button in the Library panel and the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar. Both behave differently. The "Faces" button in the Library panel  will reveal all faces, whereas the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar will only show the faces detected in the in the currently selected item (folder, project). So it may appear that faces are missing, even if they are included in the Aperture Library.

    Hi All,

I have checked all the syntax and all are fine.
my doubt is first i have assigned to hana 5 server.after that due to some outage they have migrated me to hana 7 server.
due to this do am i getting or i don't have access to that directory.
Here is folder that i have created the hana dev center.
    Folder name : S0008356087
and last is for all the hana servers is  FTP folder is same or it will change from server to server

    Hi Jagan,
Please try again now - your suspicion was absolutely right: you didn't have access to the folder from the new server. Should be fixed now...

  • All clips missing after import from camcorder!

All clips are missing after import from camcorder - Canon ZR20.  For some tapes all clips are there, for others there are none.  All the files are there in the finder, but I don't know how to have them show up in Final Cut Pro X.
    Any suggestions?

Ok - this is frustrating.  I have been importing my old miniDV tapes again into FCPX as I wasn't able to transfer all of these projects from iMovie - don't get me started...  After importing about 7 of the tapes the first 3 came in fine, but the last 4 didn't have any clips as I said in my original posting.  Now after restarting FCPX a couple of times all of a sudden the clips are all coming in!  Strange!  Guess I'm OK now.

How do I delete the media after import from camera?

The usual procedure with video is you backup the card contents onto an archive drive. You import from the archive drive making a copy (professionals on set make two copies), and once the backups and import are verified, the card is reformatted in the camera.

  • Missing photos after importing from iPhoto

I have a big iPhoto library that span from 2002 until today.
Launching Photo for the first time started the import of the default iPhoto library, when finished the problem is not everything has been imported.
I have not done photo by photo check, but for instance all 2014 photos are missing and since I see less photo in previous years and in 2015 also photos from other years are missing.
I can't reimport the iPhoto library (I have not been able to find how), so my question is how can I import the whole iPhoto library to Photos?

First off that is a bad practice - never have any computer program delete things - import photos and keep them - after at least one successful backup cycle has taken place and you are sure your photos are safely on the Mac and backed up then use the camera's format command to erase and reformat the card
You can try to backup your iPhoto library and hold down the option and command keys while launching iPhoto - repair permissions and rebuild the database form the resulting first aid window - that may recover your photos - if it does not then photo recover software like media recover is the next step

  • Why is my library 200+GB bigger after importing from Iphoto to Aperture

I recently got a new imac and decided to start using Aperture to manage my huge library. Previously I was using Iphoto 9 in Mountain Lion. My original Iphoto library is 687GB. I exported it to my external drive and works great from there.
Now I have the new Imac with Mavericks and just got Aperture 3.5.1. I have opened the iphoto library original in this new computer and it upgraded to the new version of Iphoto that I have here (9.5.1). Everything looks good.
From my understanding this is a managed library since I only exported the library file and everything is there.
After making sure the iphoto library file was working well I decided to go ahead and import to aperture. I decided to do this since I thought it would be a much better way to go with such a big library. The original iphoto library has around 9,200 photos and videos.
I created a new aperture library in another big external drive (Drobo) and imported the original to Aperture doing File - Import- Library and choosing the original located in an external drive.
After 24hrs of working finally I can see the new library appear in Aperture. One problem I have is that it is going extremely slow compared to the same library in Iphoto, but that is another topic.
In the new aperture library I see the exact same amount of pictures and projects appear however the library appears to be 930GB. According to what I have read in other discussions I have tried to find in Aperture using the keyword search to see how many of these photos/videos have a keyword of iphoto original (vs new masters that could have been created from edited versions of the originals. If I do "iphoto original" in my search nothing appears (although it keeps "processing" the search after a couple of hours (yes, that is how slow it is working now). Is that already something wrong? Is this keyword added automatically when you import from Iphoto?
I would really like to fix this since I still have two other libraries (37GB) that I would like to merge with this one. Is that crazy? Could I expect such a big library to work well? I am new to Aperture but so far I am not impressed at all.
The only file I have to work on is the one I have in the external drive since I already got rid of the old computer....
Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Would appreaciate any help.
    Thank you!

Your library is big, but nothing out of the ordinary and well within Apertures capabilities.
It's hard to say definitively why the library has grown so, but ultimately it won't matter, once you have your library working well and you configure Aperture how you want it to operate, and you tidy up any unwated artefacts from the import, your library size will become exactly the size it needs to be.
There are a number of possible explanations for why things are going slow.
First, check how you have formatted your Drobo storage. The file system requirements for Aperture are described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3252
Next, having chosen to import your iPhoto Library, you have essentially created a new environmet with its own preferences controlling things like previes, faces, places and so on. These could explain both the size and any (temporary) performance issues.
With Aperture running, press SHIFT+CMD+0 (zero). This will show you the activity window so you can see if Aperture is performing any follow-up tasks relating to the import such as building previews, building thumbnails, detecting faces and son on.
If so, allow it time to finish. Once it's finished all the post import activity, it will settle down and begin to operate in a more optimised fashion.
Depending on the history of you old iPhoto library, there could be some clean-up work do in terms of edited copies of originals. Old versions of iTunes used distructive edits, meaning you got an edited copy of your original. Aperture doesn't work this way and you will need to decide if you want to keep those (for example stack them with tier orginals) or if you want to redo any of them using Apertures non-destrutive tools. Later versions of iPhoto used a similar non-destructive approach which will carry over, so it's just any very old edits you may have to make descisions for.

  • Iphoto faces gone after import from icloud

Hi I am using iphoto 9.6(910.29) in Yosemite and have around 8000 photos in the library and faces recognised for about 30 people so there are thousands of entries in the db.
After importing about 5 photos from icloud to prepare for a slide show at a funeral next week I went to id the faces on the imports and list of possible faces seemed to shift to my iphone contacts , not the list of people who's faces I already ID'd in iphoto
So the effect is I have lost the faces already identified and now only have three entries on my faces corkboard. I tried turing icloud shareing off and on to no effect.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to roll this back?

  • Dates Under Project After Import from Iphoto

Is anybody else having this bug?
After importing my library from iphoto, the dates shown under the projects are not showing a 'to' date!
They are ok when the project is on one date, and they show the 'from' date, but never a 'to' date!
    Anybody else?

It sounds as though you may have imported the thumbnails but I can't imagine how.
It all depends on what you mean by very low quality.
Your iPhoto  pictures will be around 4,000x3,000 pixels but when they are imported into a standard def timeline they will be around 720x540 which is a tremendous reduction.
They should still look OK but not  as good as the brilliant hi-res originals.

  • Faces gone after import from iPhoto

When I click on Faces, it's empty, the import from iPhoto forget to import faces?
Also, I can start adding names to faces, but then after a while, I'm not asked to assign any more names and I only have 12 faces but there should be many many more?
But the most important question remains : how to get my Faces from iPhoto?
    Thanks,

  • Problems "locating" referenced files after importing from iPhoto.

I recently began importing old iPhoto libraries to Aperture, mostly successfully, but have run into a couple problems locating referenced files. While the locate referenced files function worked for most of the photos, there are a handful of photos that, when I located the original file,  the time stamp was different (by 2 hours in most cases) and it was about 15% smaller than the file Aperture was looking for. As a result, even though it was clear from the thumbnails that they were the same images, Aperture doesn't even give me the option to Reconnect them.
    Aperture 3.4.5
    OS X 10.7.5

. I use the Reconnect All button, but it only finds the one file, even when there are hundreds more in the same folder that are unlinked.
Reconnect all works best, if you select all files that need reconnecting at once, and then select the first file in the list to reconnect. If the other files are in the same folder and are correctly named and match, then "reconnect all" should do it. But if the filenames differ, you will have to do it one by one.
Also,  the files are all still correctly linked in iPhoto, but every single link is broken once I import it to Aperture.
You are importing with "File > Import > Library", correct?
That is supposed to work. Have you tried to repair your iPhoto Library before importing to Aperture?
Use iPhotos First Aid Tools to repair:
Try to repair the permissions, followed by repairing the library.
To launch the First Aid Tools,  hold down the Command and Option keys ⌥⌘ while double-clicking the iPhoto library or the iPhoto icon in the Dock.
The iPhoto Library First Aid dialog appears.  Select the Repair option you want to use - first "permissions", then "database".

  • After importing from iPhoto, how would you eliminate the photos?

I have installed Aperture adn like it quite a bit. I imported from iPhoto (which copies over the pictures...not move.)
I have backed up the photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive in case Aperture blows up on me and I need to go back to iPhoto. But now that I have done that, what is the suggested way to get all those pictures out of iPhoto? so I can get back that disk space.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what's wrong with simply deleting and then emptying the trash?

  • My Iphoto refuses to import from my 4s after update

I have tried and tried to get the images in my photo stream onto my MAC but iphoto refuses to import them. I click smaller batches and try to do those... it pretends it's doing something but, buffers for 30 mins when I finally have to force quit the program. I also have some videos in my photo stream and it won't import those either. I literally have hundreds of photos on here now that I can NOT get off! I have tried restoring factory settings as well hoping that might make a difference. NOPE. I have tried unchecking the photo button in itunes like others had suggested...makes no difference. HELP please!

    Something to try:
    Launch iTunes
    Connect the Phone
When it asks you to trust the computer, say yes.
    Then try import photos.
If that doesn't help: can you see the omages with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder)?
