Iphoto just deleted my photo!

Situation:
4 computer based house (1 PC, 1 Mac, 1 Linux, 1 NAS Server (synology - linux)), all photos stored on server so that they can be accessed by all computers.
Recently got the Mac, so I've imported by WITHOUT copying them to the MAC using the option in the advanced settings that took me ages to find (why would I want to copy 100GB and fill up my HD!)
Just tried to rotate a photo, click export to save it back to the server (even though I really ought not to have to do this), save it as the same file name, and it promptly DELETES my photo.
My synopsis is that it deletes the photo BEFORE saving the the modified version, which it can't access because it just deleted it.
Does any one have any other suggestions, or is my conclusion that I can't save a photo that I've modified in iphoto without using a different name, manually deleting the old one, then renaming correct?
Cheers, Glyn.

Glyn:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think the issue is with the NAS server. iPhoto doesn't play well with them and using a "referenced" library is adding fuel to the fire. It's just not a multi-platform tool. I think your source files are save and sound on the server with maybe the exception of the edited one you tried to export.
why would I want to copy 100GB and fill up my HD!
So that iPhoto would run as it is designed to without a high probability of problems. Ain't hindsight great!
When you exported the modified version back to the server you were attempting to replace the source file with the modified one. That probably broke the alias link somehow bringing down the library as a whole. Why not just leave the modified version in the library that did the editing and have the other Macs do the editing if they see fit. As for the PC it will have to do it's own editing by if it edits the source file it may break the link again. iPhoto prefers a OS X Extended (journaled) format for best stability.
Do you see any thumbnail images and what happens when you double click on one? If you've just broken the alias links to the source files you might be able to re-link them, event by event (i.e. folder by folder) by linking one file in each event/folder. That has re-linked all of the files in that folder for me in the past, BUT they were residing on an external FW hard drive.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • I have iphoto 7, deleted my photos now having problems getting them from iomega (even though I can see the iphoto library there)

I have iphoto 7, deleted my photos (now iphoto has grey boxes where images were).  I've backed up on Iomega, and I can see the iphoto library there.  But how do I get it back on iphoto?  I dragged it into my hard drive, but iphoto still shows grey boxes.
Thanks in advance from this novice!

    There is no iPhoto 7
    there are iPhoto 6 (version 6.x.x), iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x), iPhoto '09 (version 8.x.x) and iPhoto '11 (version 9.x.x)
Do you have iPhoto '08 - which version?
Do the gray boxes had large "!" in them?
How and why did you delete your photos?
How did you backup to the Iomega drive - Time machine - drag the iPhoto library - other backup program?

  • IPhoto update deleted my photo library

Recently i was asked to update iPhoto to 9.5.1 by software update. I unfortunately did so. When I try to open iPhoto now there is an error message that says that I do not have access rights to my iPhoto library. I cannot find the library anymore and it seems that the library was deleted. Cmd + alt does not help. 15.000 photos are gone. Thank you for this great update!
    Is there any help?

I found a solution: Instead of cmd + alt, I just tried to create a new library by starting iPhoto holding the alt-key. A dialog opened that gave as one option "open other library". I searched for my library and saw that it was in a hidden folder (no idea why this folder is hidden). I selected the library. Then the program sad that the library has to be updated and that I will not be able to use it with former iPhoto versions. Then the update bar appeared and after a while all my pictures appeared again. Yeahhhh.
But now, I will do frequent backups that I didi not in the past!!!

  • IPhoto 11 deleted my photos

This has happened to me MANY times.
I'll import photos to iPhoto (the copy to iPhoto library option is selected), play around with them, add faces and whatnot, and all is well. Until...
When I go to export the photos back to my hard drive (maybe because i've changed how they look), they have been WIPED from my hard drive--they're not in the original folder, they're not in the Trash. They are nowhere. It happens to random ones, not all of them. It doesn't happen every time. It can happen whether I'm exporting/importing many or just one at a time. What prompted me to ask about it this time was that it deleted over 20 of them from one album in one go.
How is this possible!? I'd like to be able to use iPhoto without having to hunt through my Time Machine every time it randomly deletes something!! And how can I get them back???

Simply, I've not come across this sort of issue before, where new imports are trashed from the Hard Disk like this.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IPhoto just deleted my Mobileme Galleries!?!

I just opened iPhoto to get an error message per each of my galleries online. It said, "Your Mobileme gallery insert gallery name has been deleted. First, how does this program have access to delete my galleries without approval and second why did this happen? Any guidance would be helpful so I don't have to upload all my photos again. If so, I'll probably just move them to flickr and get rid of this buggy software...

Did you delete them in iPhoto? Did you delete them using MobileMe? Did your MobileMe subscription run out? What did you do and what do you think might have caused this? Since we know nothing except what you tell us and since no one else has reported a problem it is not possible to help without more information
And threatening the users here with quitting using iPhoto certainly is not powerful

  • New iPad 2 won't sync iPhotos without deleting existing photos

I just got the iPad 2 and want to sync my photos from my Mac. It won't sync all of them at once (pop up window says it can't sync) so I tried a few albums at a time, which works but deletes the previous photos with new ones. It shouldn't be this hard, right? Help please!

To add a new album without erasing other existing ones, just leave the current ones checked in iTunes before syncing. You can add photos from one (or more) iPhoto or Aperture events/albums at a time, but DON'T unselect the events you want to keep in iTunes or any unselected album will be deleted.
There shouldn't be a restriction on the number of photos to be synced at a time.  I have loaded 17,000 photos with iTunes from my iPhoto database on my iPad and 24,000 photos from my Aperture database (via iTunes) onto my iPad 2 without a problem.

  • My iphoto just deleted all of its events, contents, absolutely everything... what do i do?

It came up with something saying iphoto had detected inconsistensies, and closed my iphoto and reopened it and when it reopened everything had disappeared

    What version of iPhoto?
    Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto deleted my photo's.  Apple backup is acting weird!!

Upgrading to iphoto has deleted some photos of mine, more like over 200.
Using apple's backup.app I made a backup of my home folder (where the pics are) prior to upgrade and I have a ilife backup from November.
However, backup is acting up! I double clicked the backup and it just opened the backup app. Ok, so I then highlighted ilife, all the options were greyed out.
I highlighted the home folder backup, and clicked restore and nothing happened. arrgh. any help? These are pics of my son's birth and I thought I was being smart by backing up.....
ps, I tried deleting all backup's plist etc....and reinstall. the same thing happens

    Chet:
I'm not familiar with Apple's backup but since the V6 library folder is entirely different in structure than the V5 folder there's no way to use a backup to recreate the V6 library from a V5 version.
Did iPhoto really delete them or are they still in the folder but not linked? That's what usually happens. Since you were trying to join apples and oranges I suggest you bring down your backup iPhoto Library folder intact (you may have to move your current folder out of the Pictures folder to somewhere else on the desktop) and let the backup application recreate your V5 library folder in the Pictures folder. Then give V6 another go at converting it.

  • If i delete a photo in my iphoto library that I added to a photo stream, does it delete it from the photo stream?

If i delete a photo in my iphoto library that I added to a photo stream, does it delete it from the photo stream?

i can't tell if my question is the same, or slightly different, but this thread seems closest to my question so i will ask it here so as to not duplicate:
on my iphone 6 i have icloud photos beta on. in iphoto on my computer, i have photostream on, but auto import off. so, the only thing i have for photo stream photos is "icloud" under the shared heading.
when i delete a photo from the icloud section in photo, it does not delete it from the photos beta app in beta.icloud.com. if i had auto import turned on, i would think this would be normal functioning with respect to the actual events that get imported, but since i have it turned off and am working with photostream itself i would have thought it would delete from the photos app on the website when i delete it from the stream in iphoto.
similarly, deleting a photo from the photos app on the icloud website does not delete it from the iphoto photostream if i had already opened iphoto and thus the album had already been updated (though if i delete the photo from the beta website before opening iphoto, it won't show up in iphoto since it was deleted from photostream before iphoto updated from photostream).
so, as it stands - my iphoto only sort of syncs with photostream. is everyone experiencing this? i'll be honest - i still don't get the new icloud drive and photos, so maybe the issue i am having is exactly what the photos app for osx is intended to correct when it comes out next year. or am i just wrong in how i think the syncing is supposed to function?

  • IPhoto '09 version 8.1.2:  If I permanently delete the photos in IPhoto trash, will the same duplicate photos be deleted from the Events library?

For IPhoto '09, version 8.1.2:  If I permanently delete the photos from the IPhoto trash, will any of the duplicate photos in the IPhoto library also be deleted?

    1. There are no duplicates in iPhoto unless you imported two or more copies of the same photo
    2. If you are useing the defaults in iPhoto and delete a photo from an event and empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash all versions of the photo will be gone

  • I just deleted all my photos from my iPhone , I have the cloud and backup turned on how do I get my pics back to my phone

I just deleted my photos from my I phone I have the cloud setup home do I get them back

If the photos were in your camera roll when you last backed up, restoring the backup should recover them.  Restoring an iCloud backup requires first erasing your phone.  If you have any newer data on your phone since the backup that you want to keep, you'll need to save that first.  Then go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, go through the setup screens on the phone and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.  Sign into your iCloud account and choose your last backup to restore to.
Make sure you phone is connected to wifi and your charger as this may take some time to finish.

  • How do I delete music/photos OFF of my itouch?

Ok, in previous iPods I used to be able to add and delete music whenever I didn't listen to something as often or didn't want it on anymore to save space. I can't figure out how to delete anything off of my itouch. Please tell me how. I have some embarassing photos I'd rather not be on there.
Also, I have album artwork in my library, but it's not showing up on my itouch even after syncing everything. Any ideas?
    I'd greatly appreciate the help!

If you put it on manual sync it is easier to deal with for deleting music, you just delete.
Photos will still use autosync though, so if you have a picture you want off, uncheck the folder it is in through itunes. This will present you with the choice to delete the photos.
OR move it out of that folder through your computer's OS, when the ipod syncs the image will be gone.
    ALBUM ART
For each of the following, delete the songs from the ipod and re-add them after the step.
If part of an album has art but the rest does not, the ipod will not display any art for that album, even though itunes will.
    1. Check to see if every song in the album has the art. If they do, clear the downloaded art and get it again.
    2. If this doesn't work, right click the album art in the popup art window and choose "copy". Highlight all the songs in the album and right click in the art popup window and click "paste", even if there is a picture there. Itunes should process the album and write id3 tags for the pasted image.

  • How do I delete a photo from my main album but keep it in a album I made

I have tried but it just deletes the photo all together

    You cannot.
There is only one photo.  You can simply access it from two places.
If you delete it in the main folder, then it is gone everywhere.

  • Iphoto crashed, deleted pictures from camera

Iphoto just deleted all of the pictures from my camera, without importing them. These are my honeymoon pics, any ideas on how to recover them?

A data recovery program like media recover - http://freshcrop.com/
And in the future never have iPhoto (or any computer program files- import them and test them (I wait for at least one backup cycle) and then use your camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it
