IPhoto just won't open

We have two different login names on our iMac and both of them have iPhoto on them. iPhoto will open on one of the logins, but on my login it simply won't open. When I click on the iPhoto icon a bold question mark appears on the icon and nothing will come up. I've tried to download newer versions of iPhoto since the time I found out it doesn't work. However, whenever I try to download them, the computer sends me a message that either says "newer versions of iPhoto are already downloaded" or "there are no applications already existing". Those messages are rather contradicting, and I have no idea how to solve my problem. I had a lot of photos on iPhoto, and I can't find some of them since it hasn't worked. There are still a few that I have left, and i have to open them with the Preview program which has no features other than rotating the picture. I would really like to find my missing photos and be able to use iPhoto again...please help me!
iMac

Thanks for your help, I found my missing pictures in the iPhoto Library folder. Although I still can't get iPhoto to work. I went to the Applications folder to try to open iPhoto, but there isn't an icon for it in there. When I click on the icon on the dock and tell it to show in the Finder, nothing happens. Finder doesn't even open.
I do have an iPhoto library in my Pictures folder, so I did get all of my pictures back. I did get one hit when I searched for iPhoto.db and it is located in the iPhoto Library, which is in located in the Pictures folder. I can't open this file though because, "There is no default application specified to open the docment 'iPhoto.db'." I am able to pick an application to open it, but even so I don't know which one is best.
And one last thing, I haven't ever changed my short user name.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit.  Now it just won't open.  When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens!  Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does then your current library has been damaged and should be repaired: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Fresh install of iPhoto 11 won't open - say's it needs update.

    Hi,
I need some help here. I just re-installed my MBP (mid 2010) with OSX Lion, got all updates. After that i installed my iLife 2011 software bundel, and got every update downloaded and installed. Rebootet and then tried to start iPhoto (for the first time since my re-install). Now it says: "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the lastest version." Problem is, that i allready did this before i tried to start iPhoto - So i'm stuck. iPhoto has been installed from the iLife 2011 bundel DVD, and not from the App Store.
Hope some of you can help me. I have searched the discussion forum, and i all i find is some guides aboout deleting som cache files, but these does not exsist on my mac, because iPhoto has never beed opened.
Ps. I made a backup of my iPhoto library, before i did the Lion reinstall - so nothing is lost.
(sorry for my bad english, i'm from Denmark )
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I had the same happen to me, i updated with an ilife11 dvd, iphoto now won't open says i need to do the software update but everything is up to date when i run the update.  I tried to do the steps you suggested above, but i can't 'get info' on iphoto to see what version i have, when i try to click the icon the same little box pops up saying i need to update to latest version, run software update now to install.  I did try searching another way and it looks like i have iphoto 9.0 on Mac and last modified last night when i did what i thought was an ugrade. i was under the impression i was upgrading my current iphoto 9 to iphoto 11 when i did the ilife dvd.  (im computer illiterate) anyhow i can't open iphoto now and im wondering if i've just lost all my pictures that i've never backed up, at this point i could care less about upgrading to the newest app, i just want all my photos back.  Do you think i should put the dvd back in and try it again or will that just mess everything up now (new apps and other updates that came on that dvd seem fine when i open them)
    I'm using a Mac OS X version 10.6.8

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.

In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

I've been taking screen shots for years and opening them from my desktiop. Suddenly, today, I've lost the ability to open them. I can right click on the picture and do "quicklook", but that's it. They just won't open.
Similary, if I scan an image and save it as a PDF file in pictures, I'm suddenly not able to open it either!
    Why?

Move the com.apple.screencapture.plist file out of /username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and try again.
BTW, use the default 10 point setting for text. Your choice just wastes screen space.

  • ITunes just won't open?

i don't know what is wrong with my iTunes. i double click on the shortcut and iTunes just won't open. then i try and click on it from the start menu, and nothing again. i have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes about 3 times and still nothing changes. no error window or anything pops up even.
can someone help me please? thank you, i would really appreciate it.

I was having the same problem - this fixed it for me:
    Remove iTunes Preference files
Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be corrupt and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
    * C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
    * C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

The iPhoto Library Upgrader tool doesn't work. I've downloaded it, and follow the directions, but iPhoto still won't open.

    Your Library is damaged.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for goign back: do you have an undamaged library?

I am not able to open my 'system preferences' it shows up on top, but the window just won't open. I haven't installed anything new, I have also restarted my computer, but still encounter this problem. Help?

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Installer/Application Manager just won't open

In the simplest terms: Adobe Application Manager for CS5 just won't open. It all started when I tried to update CS5 to the most recent version, but this Application Manager would freeze up after the "Initializing Installer" window was done. After that, AAM not only stops responding, but it slows the entire computer down. I would let it sit for 10-20 minutes, and still nothing. I tried downloading the patch to update AAM, but that did the same thing. I tried uninstalling CS5, but that requires AAM, so I used to AppZapper to get rid of all the CS5 programs. When I tried to reinstall, it put AAM back on my computer and the problem returned. I tried the CS5 CleanUp Utility, which claims it got rid of all CS5 files. AAM still locks up after initialization. I tried repairing disk permissions, same thing. I even consulted the PDApp.log, and there have been no FATAL or ERROR messages. I am at a loss here, as I now have no CS5 programs and no way to get them back. Please help.
I'm running OSX 10.6.5 on a 2x2.8Ghz MacPro with 32 gigs of RAM (which is why its so troubling when the computer slows to a crawl). Thank you in advance for your help.

If you are using IE 7, try removing it (reverts to IE 6). There seems to be a problem with the windows installer for QT when used with IE 7. This even holds true if you use Firefox or some other browser to download the program. Try using your
QT icon in your system tray to see if it recognizes QT being on your computer. Mine said it was not loaded even though I could find it in the Windows ADD/Remove utility. This is what I did to correct my problem.
    Remove IE 7
    Remove QT
    Remove iTunes
    Download iTunes + Quicktime
    Install iTunes
All of my music came back just fine, playlists and all. You may lose some album art or settings such as compilations but that is all.

  • IPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version

I have an early 2009 mac pro desktop with 6 megs of ram. iPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version to work but the most recent version won't work either because I have Mountain Lion. I downloaded iPhoto from the App store and the store said "you can't download the most recent version because you don't have Mavericks - would you like to download an older version?" So I said yes and downloaded it. It is actually the Mavericks version that downloads anyway. So I used an older version from my other computer and updated it to version 9.4.3. When I try to open it it says you need the most recent version. My library is on an external drive which was downgraded from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion because Mavericks wouldn't work properly on my computer. Now no version will open.
What can I do? Thank you for your help in advance.

    The exact error message is:
THe library "iPhoto Library" cannot be opened. To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto. Then the Quit button is at the bottom of the dialog box.
I did install iPhoto 9.5 when I installed Mavericks, Keep in mind that all of my photos are not on the boot drive but they are on an external drive. I then got rid of Mavericks and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion then I copied the contents of a previous drive that only had Mountain Lion on it. 9.5 wouldn't open in Mountain Lion so I copied an older version from another computer and updated it to 9.4.3. 9.4.3 says you must upgrade to the latest version and 9.5 says you need an older version. So I am stuck now.

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 9 just won't open!

I always did many projects on it and now all of the sudden it just won't open. There will be this little rectangle at the bottom saying it's loading and it never opens!! I'm so mad! Please help

You are in the Premiere PRO forum, you need http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere_elements/content
When you go there (or if a Moderator moves this message) you need to provide a LOT more information
From the Premiere Elements Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042180
•What version of Premiere Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Elements 12 with the 12.0.1 update).
•What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac"
•Has this ever worked before?  If so, do you recall any changes you made to Premiere Elements, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.?  Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?
•Are you using an account with Administrator Privileges?
Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 (Encore + "All" Premiere)
•Have you installed any recent program or OS updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
•What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
•If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
•What were you doing when the problem occurred?
•What other software are you running?
•Tell us about your computer hardware. How much RAM is installed?  How much free space is on your system (C:) drive?
    And some other questions...
•What are you editing, and does your video have a red line over it BEFORE you do any work?
•Which version of Quicktime do you have installed?
•Have you viewed the tutorial links at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1275830 page to learn the program?
What is your exact brand/model graphics adapter (ATI or nVidia or ???)
What is your exact graphics adapter driver version?
Have you gone to the vendor web site to check for a newer driver?
For Windows, do NOT rely on Windows Update to have current driver information
-you need to go direct to the vendor web site and check updates for yourself

  • Mail suddenly just won't open

All of a sudden the Mail program just won't open.
I click on the logo in the dock, the icon briefly flashes, then nothing.
I've tried double clicking the program through the Finder but still no response.
I've tried to find a way to re-install the Mail program without having to re-install a whole bunch of other programs but so far can't find away to do it.
Any ideas what the best option would be?
And... which came first: The chicken or the egg?
    Peace to all!

Mail dumps a whole lot of files in several places in your user library folder which it needs to run. If these get corrupted then Mail might get confused and simply not open, which is what i'm guessing and hoping your problem is. Before you go messing around with such files, run a permissions check from disk uility and if you really want repair the disk. Please read the whole post then act accordingly.
The first file you want to look at is from your home folder (the house with your user account written under it) library>caches and the folder mail. just move it to your desktop and see if mail launches.
If no go up to the library again and open preferences folder and move the mail preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) to your desktop and again see if mail launches.
If this doesn't work then move the mail folder inside the library folder to your desktop and again see if mail works. This should in effect wipe mail and give it a clean slate, it will prompt you like the first time you ever set up mail for user account details, etc.
If this doesn't work, please tell me anything else you can that might help. If you have valuable data (attachments, certain content in e-mails) then i can try and help you retrieve them from the files you moved to your desktop, so don't delete them until you are 120% sure you don't need them.
    hope that helps
