Iphoto keeps disappearing
Every time I open iphoto, it's empty.
A few days ago, all the photos disappeared and I found them again thanks to help I got on this forum. I've rebuilt the library, made a new one, etc, etc. (and of course emptied the trash!).
I can import photos but when I open iphoto the next time, they've disappeared. And, when I copy the photos directly from my camera to a file on my desktop (so I don't have to go through iphoto) about 70 % of them are "corrupted" and can't be "read" by Preview.
Why does iphoto keep emptying itself?
I've now copied all my old photos on Cd's but I'd like to be able to import new photos on iphoto.
I've also run through maintenance, onyx, verified the "autorisations" (don't now how to say it in english), etc.
A lot of "autorisations" get repaired every time... can that be a sign???
I'd appreciate any help I can get...
Thank you
Apparently the trouble is within my computer...
But where in your computer?
If you cannot successfully copy the files from your camera to the desktop without corrupting them, then the problem is not iPhoto.
How did you 'Rebuild" the Library?
imported new photos from another camera. I didn't re-import any other old photos (even though I can still see them in the iphoto library when doing the Right Click -> Show Package Contents).
That's not making a new Library. That's importing new files to an already damaged and unstable Library.
All the thumbnails showed up fine, but then when I clicked on them, some of them went black...
What Colour Profile are these pics? iPhoto supports RGB.
I then rebuilt the library with iphoto library manager - which didn't go too well. I got a lot of messages telling me that so and so photo could not be imported, and a message saying "iphoto Library Manager was unable to successfully quit iphoto. Please dismiss any messages being displayed in iphoto that need to be responded to before it can quit etc, etc".
This means that the damage to the Library is so serious that iPhoto Library Manager can' fix it.
To create a new Library:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Now import to that and see what happens.

IPhoto keeps on generating photos in "modified" folder
Hi,
I'm really frustrated with how iPhoto duplicates edited photos. Therefore, I don't really do any editing in iPhoto anymore. However, the "modified" folder still has copies of photos I never edited. I select those photos in iPhoto and choose "revert to original". the photos in the modfied folder disappear for a while... but they are just regenerated after a few seconds! I've tried deleting the photos in the modified folder through the Finder, but the same thing happens. For some reason, iPhoto keeps on creating "modified" photos. To my knowledge, thats only supposed to happen when I edit in iPhoto. But again, no editing whatsoever has been done.
Do help!Enzo2121
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
But again, no editing whatsoever has been done.
Actually there has.
Your camera has an auto-rotate feature. This feature flags the photo with an instruction "Display Me This Way Up". The file is not changed, no actual pixels get turned. No application with editing capabilities respects these flags. iPhoto sees the flag and reads it as an instruction: Rotate Me. Rotation is an edit, hence the modified version.
When you try Revert to Original, iPhoto destroys the Modified version and reads the Original again. Of course the Original has this flag put there by the camera, iPhoto sees the flag and creates a new modified version. So you have a loop.
Solution: 1. Turn off auto-rotate on your camera or 2. Rotate the pics with another app before importing them. Make sure that the app you chooses actually rotates pixels.
I've tried deleting the photos in the modified folder through the Finder,
*It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss*
I'm really frustrated with how iPhoto duplicates edited photos. Therefore, I don't really do any editing in iPhoto anymore.
Any photo you edit via iPhoto also has a preserved original. If you don't edit via iPhoto, then iPhoto won't know about the edits, and your thumbnails will not reflect the reality of the photo. If you don't want this feature, bluntly, you'll be better off not using iPhoto. There are other photo organisers out there. Search on MacUpdate.

Imported iPhoto Pictures Disappeared
Hello Fellow Mac Users!
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5 and it has all recent updates. I plugged in my Nikon D5100 and imported photos to iPhoto '11. I split and named the events. I imported all of the photos (and unfortunately clicked "Delete Photos from Camera After Import"). All of the photos disappeared from iPhoto (some are in photo stream), I cannot open photo stream from iPhoto on my MacBook (I can open it from my iPhone), and now some events don't have any photos when opened (although they show having photos from the events library) and some are misnamed with the event names from the import.
I have read and write permissions for iPhoto (I am the admin).
I tried restarting the program and computer. There aren't any updates that I am missing. Also, I held down command and alt while launching iPhoto, but no additional dialogue boxes were opened.
Please help.
Thank you!a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and the reformat the card -- I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Your post goes aroung the field a lot and I am not really clear on what is working and what is not
Imported iPhoto Pictures Disappeared
All of the photos disappeared from iPhoto (some are in photo stream)
I cannot open photo stream from iPhoto on my MacBook (I can open it from my iPhone)
now some events don't have any photos when opened (although they show having photos from the events library)
Also, I held down command and alt while launching iPhoto, but no additional dialogue boxes were opened.
Typically this is because you do not hold the Alt & COmmand keys long enough
You appearently have a MacBook (10.6) and a MacBook Pro (10.7.5)
Did you import the photos to the MS or the MBP? You talk about trying to open PS on the MB with 10.6 - PS requires 10.7.5 or newer - Please explain - do your photos show in PS on the MBP?
what does " some events don't have any photos when opened (although they show having photos from the events library)" mean?
Please try to provide a more clear and concise description of the problem

Memory on my macbook air keeps disappearing. I have 120 gigs and I am down to 150mb without adding any files.
Thanks...I have tried the various options and the only item of interest is that my only account on this computer says it has 102 gig of memory used up. However, when I open and look at the individual files, they add up to less than 15 gigs.

Final cut wont open and keeps disappearing while loading
Since friday, I am trying to open final cut and wont let me, it disappears as soon as it starts loading. I restarted the mac so many times and I have reinstalled final cut and nothing. keeps disappearing.
any thoughts? Before the long winded uninstall / reinstall hoopla, did you just try trashing your preferences? Might be all you need. You can do it manually of course but the free Preference Manager tool from Digital Rebellion handles it easily plus allows you to create preference set backups and more : http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm

I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -
I need to print the FULL image as shown on the screen - the image is SQUARE (equal on all four sides). iPhoto keeps cropping it into a rectangle - this is not acceptable! How do I get what I see on the screen into print form?

My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything!
My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything! It used to crash when importing but now I'm at the point where I open the software and after 2 seconds it crashes (nothing connected either). What to do? Can't access any photos
Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create a new library and import some test photos then the problem lies with your original library.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If iPhoto crashes while trying to create a new library then try this:
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that fails to help a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all relavant updaters.
P.S. If you're still running Tiger, 10.4.6, then the above may not apply. If you're running a newer system you should update your profile so we have a better idea of where you're at.

If it doesn't the your library is damaged and needs to be fixed. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto 8.1.2 and later or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.

Firefox not only disappears from my dock but also from my Applications folder. I tried to downl0ad it again today (5/19/2011), however, it says my system isn't compatible because I don't have an Intel processor. Any suggestions. I have problems with Safari and like to use Firefox but can't if it keeps disappearing and then Mozilla tells me that I can't install after I have already downloaded the application.
For an unofficial Firefox 4 compatible version that runs on Mac OS X 10.4.11 or Mac OS X 10.5.8 (PowerPC) you can look at:

ICal Tasks/To Do Items Keep Disappearing, plus search function doesn't work
Ever since I upgraded my Mobile Me calendars about two or three weeks ago, which as I understand makes my calendars now LIVE on the Mobile Me cloud instead of directly on my computers, I have had nothing but trouble with iCal. I use Bento with iCal for my project management system — I use the iCal Tasks for my basic information, and I added extra fields in Bento for other details I like to track. Anyway, the upgrade completely unhinged where those two came together so that the basic information that Bento was getting from iCal no longer matched with the extra details.
But that's no longer my problem. I fixed that easily by completely changing the way I track things now — I did away with the extra fields and decided to have Bento work directly and only with the information in my iCal app.
Still, another problem came up, the one I need an answer to. New tasks I entered through Bento, wouldn't KEEP on iCal. They'd show up momentarily, but a day or two later, they would be gone.
I thought I fixed it a few days ago when I discovered that Time Zone Support wasn't checked on iCal. I made sure it was checked on all my computers AND on Mobile Me because I suspected that Tasks were disappearing every time my computers synced with Mobile Me. It seemed to work fine after making sure everything supported time zones. I even synced a few times, just to test it, checked all calendars at all places, and whatever Tasks or To Do Items I added from within Bento appeared to sync fine, appear at all the proper places, at all instances of the calendars, AND stay put.
BUT I just discovered tonight, that the new Tasks I entered in the last week for one of my calendars have ONCE AGAIN disappeared. For some reason, though, the new tasks I entered for another one of my calendars managed to stay put. I have no idea why one calendar was affected and another wasn't.
The point is, I can't for the life of me figure out why my newly entered Tasks keep disappearing. Is it an iCal thing? Is it Mobile Me? Is it because I am entering the tasks/to do items from within Bento? What?
And the icing on the cake? The search function on the iCal app on one of my computers no longer works. I will search for a task/to do item that I KNOW is there and can actually see on the side bar, but it will not pop up in the search results. I searched online about how to fix that, but none of the fixes work — many of them, I believe, are outdated and so can't work in my case.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix these issues?with iTunes and the apple.com web site, you don't hit
the Magnifing glass, after typing out what your
searching for, you hit enter on the keyboard. The mag
glass (Atleast in windows) is just for decor showing
you its a search field, its not an actual button like
it would be in most Microsoft/Windows apps
Thanks. I thought the magnifying glass was a clickable icon. -
Notes in iCal keep disappearing since Yosemite
My notes on my recurring calendar events keep disappearing. I have tried adding them through iCloud.com and that will work for a couple of days and then they will disappear. This happens when I add notes via my MacPro, Macbook Pro or iPhone. I can't find anything related while searching the discussions in the last couple of years.
OS X 10.10.1I've entered in a bug report so we'll see what happens....

All of my playlists made on my Ipod touch 3rd gen keep disappearing when I sync it to itunes. Drivng me crazy. All software up to date on both itunes and Ipod. Help please.
I tend to make my playlists right on my ipod. This did not happen for the last 2 years. Just started recently. Did get a new computer recently. That is because you got a new computer. You can only sync all media from one syncing computer. You can sync from any computer to iPod using the manual method but that does not sync from iPod to computer.

My external Seagate 4Tb drive keeps disappearing on my Windows 8.1 Toshbia X75 laptop
I have a new Toshiba X75 laptop running Windows 8.1 64 Bit. One of my external drives keeps disappearing on me and the only way that I know of to get it back is to reboot, and this is getting old real fast.
I have 5 external hard drives; drive 1: 500Gb, USB 2.0 western digital, drive 2: 2TB, USB 3.0 seagate, drive 3: 3TB, USB 3.0 seagate, drive 4: 4TB, USB 3.0 seagate, and drive 5: 4TB, USB 3.0 seagate. Drives 1, 2 & 5 are connected to a powered USB 2.0
7 port hub which is plugged into one of the laptop's 4 USB 3.0 ports; the othe two drives are plugged directly into two of the other three USB 3.0 ports on the laptop.
Drive 1 has done this once before and hasn't done it since. Drive 4 is the problem child although drive 5 has done this in the past too. Both drive 4 & 5 where purchased at the same time. At first I thought that drive 4's problem was the drive it self,
so I had it replaced, but it still is a problem child. When it was replaced they gave me a newer version of the drive too.
Is there a fix via Microsoft?
I have read that there might be some sort of a fix for the registry, but when it comes to playing with the registry, I tend to make sure that I know exactly what I'm doing before hand, and right now I don't know what to do in the regestry.
Anyone have some great ideas?
And thanks ahead of time for the help. This is probably the article that you were referring to with the registry fix:
"Help! After installing Windows 8.1, my USB drive disappears or file transfers
stop unexpectedly..."
This article was updated to state that the registry workaround is no longer required, as the Update has a fix in it. However, you still might want to check the power settings and make sure 'suspend' is disabled.
Hope this helps,
David

Hard Drives Keeps Disappearing Windows 8.1
I just recently upgraded to Win 8.1. I have 3 hdds. Win is installed on Samsung SSD. The other hdds is for software and for games. The gaming hard drive keeps disappearing. I have to restart the computer to get it show again in My Computers. Also I notice
sometimes when I restart my boot order keeps changing. I have to go into the bios and change the load order back to my SSD to the 1st priority. Can someone help with this issue?Hi wjason777,
OS related issue please consult on MS Answers http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows
Hardware related issue please contact your provider.
For your issue, when you reboot you can press F2 or F12 to load your boot menu. However, please notice the key depends on your hardware. It migth also be F5. So you may have to contact your computer provider about this issue.
If you can open that Boot menu. Please try search for boot order. Then you will be able to change the order.
By the way, if SSD keeps disappear, I think it is poor contact. I will recommend you contact your provider for more details.
