IPhoto keeps "dropping" my library that's located on an external drive

iPhoto can't seem to hold on to my external Western Digital drive.
My iPhoto library is located on the drive (connected via USB). When I launch iPhoto, it loads up all my photos from the library, and they look fine. But if I try to print a photo and/or start moving around within the library in iPhoto to view other images, every thumbnail goes black and I get messages that iPhoto must quit, and that a device (the external drive) was removed improperly. This happened like five times in a row.
I've checked the power and USB cables, and I'm pretty sure they're not the problem.
When I unplug and replug the USB cable, the external drive remounts. When I launch iPhoto again, it prompts me to select my library. Then all the photos are back, at least until the next time I start printing photos or moving around in the library.
This problem only came up when I moved to the new Mac Mini and new iPhoto (I had other iPhoto problems on my old MacBook, which I also ran from a library on the external drive, but I didn't have this problem).
I need iPhoto to quit dropping the external drive -- any ideas? Thanks.

Most likely cause: A damaged USB port on either the Mac or the Disk, or a faulty cable. To check for this try a variety of each.
When the drive dismounts, is it gone from the Finder too? If so, it supports the Hardware theory.
Less Likely but also possible: what format is the External Drive? iPhoto requires a drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Are you shooting RAW? Are you exporting masters or versions? Is there a size limitation on the Walgreens site?

  • Can photo library be saved direct to an external drive?

can the iphoto library be saved directly to an external drive?

    Not "saved" - Moved
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • HT1766 I wish to move my iTunes library from my PC to an external drive to make room on my PC. How do I do this?

I wish to move my iTunes library from my PC to an external drive to make room on my PC. How do I do this?

    The following may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
Note the following fine print therein:
Note: If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive before starting iTunes. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library). No matter what, it's always a good idea to have a backup of the media you have in iTunes.

  • Using software instruments that are stored on an external drive.

I recently bought Logic 9. Doing a custom install, I stored the instrument library on an external disk thinking it would be easy to use the instruments at a later time. Now, however, when I create a software instrument track, I only see the basic exs instruments. I can't find any further help on how to use my full library of instruments stored on my external drive. This must be simple, but I can't figure out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Logic looks at the Garageband library for these.
You'll need to go in there and create an alias to where you've put your content, otherwise they won't show up in the Garageband instruments section.

  • Iphoto keeps dropping out. Sometimes other programs do too such as Software Update. They other programs seem to drop randomly but iPhoto drops out constantly. Is there a solution?

iPhoto constantly keeps dropping out. Other programs do at times but iPhoto drops out constantly. Does anyone know what causes this?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My iphoto library disappeared. i am trying to restore my library from time machine -- from an external drive -- but everytime it tries to copy my library it tells me it can't do it because i don't have access to my iphoto library??!!!  help!!

My iphoto library inexplicably disappeared! i am panicked but i do back up by time machine to an external drive and also to JustCloud.  I am trying to restore my iphoto library from a back up on feb 28, 2014 and it says it's copying but then gives me a message that it can't do it because i "don't have authorization to access iphoto library"?!  what does this mean?  i really want to get my library back on my mac.  Also if anyone knows why this happened or where my photos might be on my computer, i'd appreciate help with that, too.

Thank you Terence for your help.  I was able to restore my backup from my time machine ext drive to a new 1tb seagate ext drive.  so i felt sort of ok.  but yesterday that older ext drive i used for time machine wouldn't open! i called applecare and they trouble shooted with me and said it's probably a goner and data is probably corrupted.  it's only a few years old and i'm very careful with it.  my husband accidentally dropped my new drive last night -- i know, unbelievable, i was SO upset, poor guy -- but I'm so stressed with all of this.  i have 10 years of photos and videos.  so now i only have the one newer drive with a backup.  i have to buy another one today to backup again so i at least have two backups.  i tried to delete a ton of files last night to free up the 30 gb of space i need to get my full library back on my mac. i have 90gb free and deleted 7 years worth of photos i had on picasa that were in my "pictures" folder and also a ton or random photos and videos i had in that same pictures folder and thought that would give me the 30 gb but it hardly freed up any space at all!  do you know why that is?  all of this stuff is really a pain and really stressful.  thank god i did have a backup in the first place but now i am panicked the one i have left will somehow crash.  especially after my husband dropped the drive lastnight! it didn't fall far and fell onto a wood floor and seems fine, but after my older ext drive crashed yesterday -- and i lost my entire iphoto library a fewweeks ago off my mac -- i feel cursed.  any answers you have would be great. thank you.

  • How can I import my library that is saved on a  external hard drive but it's not saved on the iTunes media folder?

I need to restore my computer to it's factory settings but I don't want to loose my playlists and my library (windows). I can copy any file from the computer because it's in good working order. All my music it's on a external hard drive, but there's lots of media files that I don't want to sync but need to keep! Any way to do that!?
    Best Regards

I think that I didn't explain my self correctly, My iTunes media it's not consolidated. May I consolidate the media on a external drive (X:\). ?
Yes. But consolidate to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media.
The why I'm asking is because the music library (176gb) is way more than the computer drive (C:\). Remember that all the media is on a external hard drive (J:\)
The steps I gave earlier will work to copy the whole library onto the new drive, in the correct layout for future ease of use.

  • IPhoto Library file partially copied to an external drive

    Hi,
I tried to copy my iPhoto Library file to an external drive. The file is about 8GB and when I copied the file to the external drive, it stopped copying up to 277MB. The message from the finder indicates that the "operation can't be completed because an item with the name "iPhoto Library" already exists. I deleted the file from my external drive and empty trash so the file shouldn't be there. I also created a new folder for the destination and still the same problem. It stops copying up to 277MB. Very strange. Now I can't backup this file.
    Thanks for your help.

Was having the same issue. Noticed that Time Machine was running. Stopped that and I was able to copy the file over. Another suggestion that I saw was in the link below.

  • Identifying songs in itunes library that have been deleted from hard drive

    Hello,
I recently had to delete a bunch of music from my hard drive by accessing it from another computer in the 'target disk mode.' Now I've got the computer up and running again but I don't want to go through my itunes library selecting each individual track that is no longer on my hard drive and removing it. Is there any feature in itunes 7 that will remove files (shortcuts) in the library with no source file in the itunes music or any other folders?
    thanks

    I'm running a managed library.
Let me see if I can understand this. The problem has to do with the place I was looking at. I was looking in the pictures folder in the hard drive. Now, the pictures inside the iPhoto library are the ones that are deleted from the hard drive, and the ones in the Pictures folder are not being touched at all. So I have two separate folders with pictures: the iPhoto library folder and the Pictures folder inside the hard drive.
Since I'm going to be using iPhoto exclusively I might as well delete that other Pictures folder in the hard drive. If I delete the pictures in this folder, would that affect the pictures I have in the iPhoto Library? I'm thinking no since iPhoto has made copies of all those pictures. What do you think?
    THanks for the info TD

  • HT1751 I cannot seem to get through this process.  I believe I have copied the library from my old to the external drive, and then to my newer MacBook Pro; but the result is the same number of songs that were originally transferred via the transfer proces

I've tried for a few days to figure out why I cannot be sure that my iTunes back-up to an external drive has "worked" or not.  I finally decided to try to transfer the content from the external drive to my newer MacBook Pro.  I already knew that the number of songs on the newer laptop were fewer than what are on my older one.  (I basically only use my older MacBook Pro now for iTunes.)  But today, still had not luck.  There is still a difference of over 100 songs appearing on the iTunes of the newer laptop than are on the older one.
I'm pretty sure that I just don't undertand the Apple article very well:  "ITunes: back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive."
This would not be so frustrating for me did I not have over 3000 songs, imported from CDs that I myself own, in my old laptop.  The thought of redoing this import is, well, tiring to say the least.

Go through the below forum with similar issue and follow the process mentioned by "Macjack" in the beginning.

  • My iMovie is not accessing my iPhoto library which is now on an external drive

My iMovie is not accessing my iPhoto library which is now on an external hard drive

Did you ever find a solution?

  • Is there a way to export all of my music from my hard drive to an external drive, connected to my computer and have iTunes still work with the music library located on the external drive?

I do not have enough room on my hard drive for all of my music collection and want to export the music files to my external 300GB hard drive rather than purchase and configure a new, larger hard drive for my computer.  Can I export all of my music library to the external drive and configure iTunes to always store music there, and operate seemlessly with the music library on the external drive?

  • Importing masters from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and saving as referenced files on external drive

I'm making the move from iPhoto to Aperture 3.I'm new to Aperture 3 and want o make sure I am importing and saving correctly. So far, I have imported my library of events from iphoto to Aperture 3. I understand that for the most part, it makes sense to house this library on an external drive as "referenced files" vs within Apeture as "managed files." I'm not clear on exactly how to accomplish this set-up. Is this something I should have set-up when doing the initial import or can I move the files now? Once this is done, when importing new files, how do I import to Aperture 3 but save on external drive?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    A fabulous answer:
In the olden days ( ) when hobbyists made their own telescopes from kits, everyone wanted a six-inch lens, and the kit makers shipped six-inch lens blanks.  Which the hobbyists used to learn lens grinding.  Which is arduous and requires skill.  Which the hobbyists didn't have until they'd ground that six-inch blank -- an expensive piece of high-quality material at the time -- into a lumpen flawed approximation of a good lens.  Then the hobbyists would contact the kit makers and ask for another lens-blank, so they could build their telescope.  At which point they would drop the project because the six-inch lens blank cost so much.  And much calumny was rained on the kit manufacturers.
Now the kit manufacturers wanted to promote a hobby, and make, in addition to telescope kits, money (not calumny), so they together and separately hit upon the idea of supplying the hobbyist with _two_ lens blanks: a four-inch blank, and a six inch blank.  Nobody wanted a four-inch telescope -- but that's not what the blank was for.  The instructions read (I've shortened this part) "Grind the four-inch blank into the most perfect lens you can.  Check it and re-check it.  Now throw it out.  You likely now have the skill to grind the six-inch blank into a useable lens."
    Thus endeth our fable.
The point, of course, is:  start small and gain skill before committing time and material to a task.  Port just a small sub-set of you photos into Aperture.  Experiment with it.  Try different workflows.  Think about how to best use the containers and organization tools Aperture provides.  Develop a long-term naming convention for files and Projects.  Work out a back-up strategy that is scalable and that you will stick with.  My specific recommendation for beginners is: don't worry about Referenced v. Managed at first.  Make all your Masters Managed.  When you have your four-inch Aperture Library all smooth and even, put the entire thing in the system trash -- and then you can start working on an Aperture Library fit for your photos -- one that will allow you to see far, and clear, for years.
    Good luck.
