IPhoto keeps eating my pictures

iPhoto keeps eating my pictures!!! It ate one event last week for which I had to buy a new data recovery program to get my pictures back and it's Monday afternoon, and between Saturday and today it has devoured SEVEN events. All that remains is a grey box with the event title and number of pictures..... ZERO!!!!!!!!!
Apple..... WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY IN YOUR BLESSED DEFENSE???
Is it your intention that my boss eats me alive
So...
While typing this... I was also looking for a way to recover iPhoto pictures.... and I found my photos in Masters> 2014> etc.... I'm calmer now but the filing is a bit whack... a lot whack actually because it's taking me a while to see what's what. I can see a date in the file name, but not really... cause there's a few extra numbers and I don't even know what 09, 08, 07 stand for... So I will spend the rest of the afternoon refiling iPhoto files.
A software with a really streamlined filing system is the one that came with the Canon 5D Mark 2... Its amazing. I would use it, but Apple decided to remove the CD drive so I cant sooner than time came so I'm stuck with iPhoto til further notice... Maybe Apple can take a look at it for the next iPhoto ugrade...

You have a corrupted database, Better off trying to fix it.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto keeps multiplying my pictures.

I move my photos from my iPhone to iPhotos and it has multiplied 500 of my pictures to 6000. Can i undo it ?

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.
SUGGESTION:  use Image Capture to upload your photos to a folder on the desktop and them import them from there.  Do you get duplicates that way?  When iPhoto asked if you want to import a duplicate tell it No.

  • Trying to understand how iPhoto keeps track of pictures...

I am trying to understand how iPhoto stores & organizes pictures.
I moved JPEGs from a portable drive to my hard drive, set iPhoto's preferences to not copy pictures when importing them, then imported them. Unfortunately, all pictures from a certain import has duplicated in iPhoto.... so I "moved to trash" all pictures from that import and tried importing again since the JPEGs were still where I moved them to. When importing, it said they were duplicated .
I am confused. If I "move to trash", I assumed it got rid of whatever index (and preview cache) to that particular JPEG. I was actually surprised it did not delete the actual JPEG but I'm ok with that.
Can someone help explain this behavior?
    Thanks
    -Ed

iPhoto is a relational database program
In the strongly recommended managed library (you have chosen to ignore this recommendation and use a referenced library) imported photos are copied to the iPhoto library and stored in the originals folder, a thumbnail jPEG is created and places in the data folder and when any modification is made (including autorotation) a modified version of the photo is created and placed in the modified folder. iPhoto updates its database entries to reflect everything it does.
It is critical that you do not make any modifications of any sort to the content or structure of the iPhoto library - doing so is likely to corrupt the library and cause you to lose data.
When you use the referenced mode which you are doing (and which is not recommended) you are taking total responsibility for the original photos which included not moving or modifying them while iPhoto is referencing them
Unfortunately, all pictures from a certain import has duplicated in iPhoto.... so I "moved to trash" all pictures from that import
Did you do this with the iPhoto trash? or did you use the finder to modify the contents of the iPhoto library.
If I "move to trash", I assumed it got rid of whatever index (and preview cache) to that particular JPEG. I was actually surprised it did not delete the actual JPEG but I'm ok with that.
again - iPhoto trash or finder trash. If you move a photo to the iPhoto trash and empty it all traces of that photo in the iPhoto library will be removed - nothing will be done to any file outside of the iPhoto library -- ever

  • My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything!

My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything! It used to crash when importing but now I'm at the point where I open the software and after 2 seconds it crashes (nothing connected either). What to do? Can't access any photos

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create a new library and import some test photos then the problem lies with your original library.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If iPhoto crashes while trying to create a new library then try this:
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that fails to help a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all relavant updaters.
P.S.  If you're still running Tiger, 10.4.6, then the above may not apply.  If you're running a newer system you should update your profile so we have a better idea of where you're at.

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it doesn't the your library is damaged and needs to be fixed. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto  8.1.2 and later  or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.

  • How can I stop iPhoto from autosizing my pictures when I create a Book?

...I'm trying to create a Book in iPhoto and it keeps upsizing the pictures and cutting them off - cannot make them smaller to fit in all content

Probably the theme you are using does not support tit - try a different theme - as I said originally
Pre Crop to 4:3 (the frame ratio for books) or in most themes right click on the placed photo and select fit to frame to use background color film rather than cropping

  • Iphoto keeps quitting unexpectedly

I just bought a brand new imac. Just tried to save some pics from Photobooth and open them on iphoto but iphoto keeps quitting unexpectedly. It keeps asking me if I want to import some photos it has found when I launch it. It then quickly closes. I created another account and iphoto is fine with that account....what's wrong and how can i fix it on my original admin account? thanks

A couple of things to try
1 - quit iPhoto (sounds like that is easy ) delete the iPhoto preferences - hard drive ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iphoto.plist and restart iPhoto
2 - if that does not fix it, quit iPhoto, right click (alt click) on the iPhoto library in your pictures folder (if you have not moved it) and select Show Package Contents - drag the photos to import (not positive of the exact name) to the desktop and start iPhoto - assuming that you are ok now you can try importing the photos from the desktop folder one by one to see which one is the problem

  • Why does iPhoto keep asking me to confirm faces after they are already confirmed?

Why does iPhoto keep asking me to confirm faces after they are already confirmed?
Once it searches for photos containing (insert name) and says "(insert name) maybe found in 1,750 photos". I click to confirm the said person and it highlights the photos already found in that persons "folder", which already contains 662 photos AND it does not show any of the unconfirmed photos. However, it told me that it found 1,750 photos....where are the missing unconfirmed pictures for me to tag? I have already rebuilt my thumbnails (which already took 3 days to do as I have MANY photos).

You are running Firefox 34, the most recent version is 35.0.1. If you are having trouble updating, please try downloading the most recent version from www.getfirefox.com and installing it over your existing version. It will save your information but update Firefox to the newest version.

  • Iphoto library lacks the picture icon

    Hi all-
I noticed a few weird things recently with my iphoto-- many video clips lack thumbnails (ie the only way to tell what clip it is is by actually viewing it).  Some are just black/ no video.  Same with some pictures- they're just black/gone.  I tried to recover using time machine- didn't help.  I noticed that in finder, the iphoto library lacks the 'picture' icon and is a "package" file (see attached screenshot).  But- it's the right size and other than what I describe above it seems to work ok.  I made a backup of entire HD with carbon copy cloner.  Even when I reboot and select the external HD iphoto library it looks the same (no icon)- and in fact it won't let me select that "package file" as the library.  I tried fixing with iphoto (permissions, recreating thumbnails etc) to no avail.  At this point I think I should re-load iphoto and see if that helps-- but my concern is that if I delete iphoto and reload that I won't be able to use the library on my external drive since I can't use it currently.
    any suggestions?
I'm using OS X and iPhoto '11, both updated.
    thanks in advance,
    Brad

If rebuilding the database doesn't solve the problem you might have to give this a try:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto just destroyed my pictures.

    I feel sick.
    My workflow:
Import pics from camera using Image Capture. Browse. Use iPhoto with "Copy Items to the iPhoto Library" unchecked just for red-eye correction, enhancement, etc, then export back to original folder so I can archive the corrected pics.
Has always worked until now: after editing, the originals are simply gone. iPhoto erased them, and all that is left are the 60k thumbnail versions in the data folder. I cannot believe the idiocy behind this application.
Yes, I know. I should have backed up first, then worked on a copy.
But still. Who the h--- would design a program that destroys the data it imports?
I am erasing all traces of this sub-amateur piece of s--- from my computer.

Rather like yourself, I‘ll accept the diagnosis of iPhoto Error once it is definitively shown. For that you’ll need to replicate the event, and provide step-by-step instructions for others to do so. If you can then you’ll have made a very useful addition to our knowledge of the application.
From your Workflow, the problem arises here:
So I'll import the photo or photos with red eyes in them, with, as I said before, the preference to copy the photos to the iPhoto library unchecked...Then, corrections and edits complete...
The pics were available for editing, which means the Originals were in place.
I export from iPhoto back to the Finder.
Thing is, the files that are missing here are the Modified version, not the Original files. You’re not exporting the Originals, you’re exporting the edited versions.
Once you’ve opened the files for editing, iPhoto never refers to them again. And even if it did, it could only refer to those ones that were imported. It simply does not know about the other files at all.
So, while iPhoto may have lost the *Edited Versions* how could it also have lost the Originals?
As you know when you edit in iPhoto (and this is regardless of whether you’re running a Referenced or Managed Library) the app +opens a copy+ of the Original file and saves the changes to the Modified version in the Modified Folder.
So, again, iPhoto does not touch the Original, does not move it, delete it, overwrite it. It copies the contents into RAM, that’s all. Iphoto carries out the edits as saves them back to the disk +in another file+ entirely.
So, there’s the area in your Workflow to focus your research on.
If I might, a comment on your Workflow. And again, I stress, I offer these comments for those who may read this post in a month’s or year’s time as much as for yourself.
I’m profoundly committed to the KISS principle - Keep it Simple, er, Stewart, or something !
The problem with complex workflows is that over time, with tiredness or distractions, it’s too easy to make a fatal error. Folks don’t make errors the first time they use the workflow. The error will happen the 58th time, or the 123rd time, or the time the baby cries or the dog barks or the doorbell goes, it’s late... whatever.
You’re using three apps: Image Capture to move the files from your camera, The Finder (or something else) to browse them and iPhoto to edit them, and they are crossing over each other to manage the files, or you’re trying to prevent them managing the files. In essence, they are each claiming the same data, or trying to. Thing is, iPhoto can do all three jobs seamlessly.
A more simple version of the workflow might run like this:
Import the Pics into iPhoto (with ‘Copy Files...’ checked.) Iphoto copies the pics into the Library. View, sort and edit as you require. Now you’ve fixed your red-eye, made whatever crops you need, made edits using Photoshop or whatever external editor.
Then Export from iPhoto: If you want the Original files, use the File -> Export command, Kind: Original... If you want the edited versions plus the untouched Originals... then Kind: Current will get those. If you want both then you’re probably best just using iPhoto
Now you have your pics in the Finder, store them as you will.
Then, trash the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder. The whole thing, as a single unit. Just drag the Library to the trash and empty it. Next time you open iPhoto it’s like using it for the first time.
This way you have a single application all the way through the process until you go to store the files.
That and a dollar may buy you a cup of coffee some places.
    Regards

  • My iPhoto keeps quitting on me about 30 seconds after I open it. Anyone know what's going on?

My iPhoto keeps quitting on me about 30 seconds after I open it. Anyone know what's going on?

Kern Portection Failure is usually related to data.   Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Managed or Referenced Library, my version does not appear to have this option?
I'm running a Mac Pro and my main drive of 3 hard drives has 238.24 GB of available space
The strange thing is I have 3 different logins, one for my iphone, one for my partners iphone and one for our ipad, when I back my phone up I have 3000+ photo's in iphoto and it crashes when it gets to the last 300 or so, same for my partners iphone which has 2000+ photo's, but I tried the ipad which has 600 pictures on the library and it back-up fine without crashing?
I look forward to your reply and thanks in advance for your help/reply

  • Why does iPhoto keep copies of deleted photos?

I recently purchased Photoshop Elements 10.  When I imported photos from iPhoto (about 15,000 images) into the PSE organizer, it imported a large number of photos that I had deleted from iPhoto, in some cases months ago.  When I searched in the iPhoto library, sure enough, there were saved masters of all the photos I had thought gone forever.
I understand perfectly well why iPhoto keeps masters of all the photos in the library, so that edits can be reverted etc.  That's not my question.  I want to know why it keeps masters of photos I deleted?  I deleted those pictures for a reason, and I wasn't happy when Photoshop imported all the old blurry shots, headless subjects and duplicates that I thought were long gone.
Is there any safe way to make iPhoto delete photos for real, as in no longer stored anywhere on the hard drive?  Would rebuilding the library do that?
Yes, I emptied the iPhoto trash bin.
No, I've never altered anything in the iPhoto library using Finder, and am very reluctant to allow any third-party software to do so.  Heard too many horror stories.
I'm currently using iPhoto '11, version 9.2.1, if it matters, but some of these deleted photos have been carried along through at least one major iPhoto update.
    Any help would be appreciated.

iPhoto 11 requires that you empty the iPhoto trash and the System Trash as well.
Other than that, this would be a symptom of a damaged database. Assuming this to be the case:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Where and how does iPhoto keep photos?

I am in the process of scanning and editing about 1000 old Kodakchrome slides taken over the past 40+ years.
My scans go into Photoshop Elements for tarting up and then are stored in various folders with appropriate names. After that I import them into iPhoto 5 in order to assemble them into albums, slides shows or whatever.
Questions: 1. Does iPhoto actually import and keep a copy of each image file? 2. Can I safely delete the folders I have used for the original and processed scans? 3. If I back-up the iPhotolibraries to an external hard drive, I am safe - I won't lose my pictures?
I am sure that these basic questions have been answered by various Mac gurus a zillion times before but I found it pretty daunting to read through the 20+ pages shown in discussions. One has to admit the contents of the iPhoto folders and files is all pretty mysterious!
Any help or direction will be most gratefully received.
    David Amies

    Hi David,
A little more info for you...
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures.
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder

  • IPhoto keeps opening randomly

After I updated my Mac to Os X Lion, I noticed that iPhoto keeps opening randomly, by itself, for no reason. No, I am not plugging in a camera, or my iPod, or anything- it just opens by itself. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? It also says that new pictures that aren't in your library have been found, but then they aren't there. Can anyone help with this too?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
