IPhoto Keywords in Aperture 2 after importing selected photos

The keywords I set up in iPhoto are not copied over to Aperture 2 after I imported several photos using the iPhoto Browser.
We're being told that there is integration between the iLife apps and Aperture - I don't see it.

Yeah, I was really surprised by this when I saw it. Strangely, when you bring photos from Aperture to iPhoto, it brings the tag. This means everything is fine for me because I'm going to import new projects from my camera to Aperture, do my edits, then use iPhoto as my main storage and organization. Still, it's surprising that they didn't enable Aperture to read iPhoto tags.

I just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos to edit, not entire i Photo library! I read manual and it says:
Browsing and Selecting Images in Your iPhoto Library
You use the Aperture iPhoto Browser to review iPhoto images and import specific images into the Aperture library. The iPhoto Browser gives you a handy way of looking for certain images without having to import your entire iPhoto library.
So, where do I review the iPhoto images...there is nothing in there that says "iPhoto Library"   Everything I see pertains to Aperture Library which of course is empty since I haven't imported (or dragged) any photos in there yet.
Also is tech support available for Aperture?  I have Apple Extended Support and I sure would love it if I had individual help.  I have a deadline --3 days to edit 300 photos and I'm a complete amateur.  iPhoto doesn't  have the capability to erase parts of a face (I need to contour the neck of a mannequin to make it proportionate to the separate head I put on top of it. I'm sure Aperture must have a tool to help me do that!  At least I hope so.

Sounds more like a job for Photoshop to me
if I decide to import entire iPhoto library into Aperture will it delete my iPhoto library?
    No.

  • Importing selected photos from Digital Camera

More than a question, this is a suggestion to the Apple developers of the iPhoto software. There are two options or tools I would really appreciate to have in my iPhoto version 5.0.4
    1. Ability to import selected photos from my digital camera or memory card reader.
    2. Ability to select the albums I want to burn to a CD or DVD.
I hope you can include these basic functions to your well appreciated iPhoto software.
If any Apple Discussions Member agree with this request, please join me asking Apple for these useful tools.
    Best regards,

    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iPhoto version 5.0.4

There may be a more "elegant" solution, but you can do it manually.
    1) Go to the finder. Look for the mounted Camera (the Camera mounts just like your drive, DVD, or Disk Image). You can find this on the Desktop or in list of volumes on the left side of any window. My Camera mounts as "NO NAME".
    2) Double Click the Camera "Volume". Keep Double Clicking (Opening folders) until you get to the picture images.
    3) Select the ones you want to Add/Import to iPhoto.
    4) Drag these on the iPhoto Icon in your Dock or in the iPhoto window, which will perform the import.
    Hope this helps.

  • Import selected photos button not working, Please tell me how to enable this function.

in Iphoto on macbook pro, the 'import selected' button blacked out, only 'import all photos' works, pls tell me how to get this to work. i'd like to transfer only selected photos to ipad. Have tried to import by copy/paste method into itunes but still cannot be done, every way i've tried is restricted. I don't want to send all my photos through email. neither do i want to use icloud. all i simply want is to have only selected photos sent through my USB cable connected from my macbook pro to send photos to Ipad. It seems Apple have made these strange restrictions for whatever purpose i don't know.

If you went through the 5 Rs step by step and you're still having problems, it might be time to find an iPod repair service. Apple will charge you as it's out of warranty. You can probably find third party repair outfits that will do it more cheaply.

  • Migrating iPhoto keywords to Aperture Keywords

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding iPhoto keywords in Aperture. Aperture seems to treat keywords imported from iPhoto differently to keywords assigned in Aperture. Does anyone know a way to get the iPhoto keywords to display in the Keyword HUD? I think once we've achieved that we could successfully migrate our keywords into Aperture, arrange them in hierarchies etc.
    Would be good. Ideas?

You can add them manually to the Keyword HUD. Make a top-level keyword called "iPhoto" and put all the iPhoto keywords under it. You can then remove them and add them using the keyword buttons.

Keywords have been moved into the Info tray at the right.  Don't know why it was changed.  You can send a request to change it back to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • I have 1000  photos in an iPhoto Library that won't import into Photos because it says the metadata can't be read.  Yet those JPG files open just fine in iPhoto, GraphicConverter, et al.  What gives?

It’s part of the basic install of OS X. So unless you deleted it then it’s there in your apps folder. If you have deleted it, it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. You will be able to extract the installation package using Pacifist.
Alternatively, if you’re using almost any camera +apart from a Canon+ then the camera card is visible on the desktop and you can drag the movie to the desktop using the Finder and import from there.
No matter what camera you use, if you pop the card from it into a USB Card Reader then it will be accessible via the Finder. Card Readers are inexpensive and all round a better idea.
    Why use a Card Reader?
Because it’s safer: Less risk of your images being lost if your camera shuts down during transfer.
Because it saves the battery on your camera
Because it saves wear and tear on your camera ports
    Because it’s almost always faster.

    Can't be done.
What you see when you first open a file in Lightroom is the jpeg preview from the camera that's embedded in the Raw file: after a few seconds Lightroom generates its own preview, with the effect you describe.
There's no way round this - you'll have to adjust Lightroom's settings to resemble the in-camera results you want, and save the settings as the new defaults.

  • Hidden photos in iPhoto not hidden in aperture after import

After importing all of my iPhotos into aperture, my hidden photos are being shown in aperture.  Is there a way to have my photos hidden in aperture as well?

    Not really.
Aperture has a seven-level rating scheme: no rating, 1-5, and "rejected".
I'm pretty sure (I don't know for certain) that photos hidden in iPhoto are assigned a rating of "rejected" when imported into Aperture via the iPhoto importer.
Rejected Images are not shown in the default Browser view of any container.  The purpose, however, is less to hide Images than it is to remove them from view prior to deleting or relocating them.
If you have Images you wish to hide from view of someone who has access to your Aperture Library, you should not include them in that Library.

  • Can't open IPhoto after importing one photo

I get this message: You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
This is after I uploaded one photo which a friend had sent me over the internet. I tried rebuilding my library. That did nothing. If I delete the picture will it fix it?
This is really annoying. I've uploaded other peoples photos before and this has never happened.
    Any help appreciated

Unfortunately, most of the suggestions you've seen apply to newer versions of iPhoto (iPhoto 4 has "smart" albums, but I don't think it has "events"), and won't be especially meaningful with the earlier versions that are the subject of this particular forum.
There are two possible causes for the symptoms you've described... One possibility is that you've got a newer iPhoto version library folder somewhere on your computer (usually it's a mounted iPhoto CD that someone sent you, created with a newer version of iPhoto -- to fix, just eject the CD before running iPhoto). It's unlikely that downloading a photo is responsible.
The second (and most likely culprit) is a corrupted photo database (as TD has suggested). Normally, iPhoto is perfectly capable of rebuilding the database without the need for any 3rd-party software (which uses the same rebuild process, anyway). Sometimes the corruption is in that XML file that TD referred to, and when that happens, the rebuilt database will still be unusable.
Assuming you still have the original iPhoto Library folder that you started with (it's in your Pictures folder and is named "iPhoto Library"). Open your Pictures folder in a Finder window and discard any iPhoto Library folders that end in a number (those are the unsuccessful rebuild attempts) -- leave the rest of your Pictures folder alone. Now, before you empty the trash to recover that disk space, move your original iPhoto Library folder temporarily to the desktop.
Now start iPhoto. You should see a dialog offering to either locate an existing photo library, or create a new one -- you want to create a new one. When iPhoto shows you an empty photo collection, quit iPhoto. Then, in a Finder window, drag your original iPhoto Library folder from your desktop, and drop it inside the newly created iPhoto Library folder in your Pictures folder -- you're not replacing the new folder, rather, you're making a deposit (if you're prompted to replace, you've missed the drop -- try again). You can also drag that downloaded photo to the iPhoto Library folder, too -- but only this one time.
Finally, start iPhoto while holding the shift+option keys. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the intent to rebuild. Click "Yes", then click "Save".
Once you've confirmed that iPhoto is working normally and all your photos have been restored (you'll probably have to recreate any keywords, album associations, etc.), you can drag your original iPhoto Library folder from Pictures to the trash (keeping the numbered iPhoto Library folder this time).

  • IPhoto events view broken after import, images missing

I'm running the latest iPhoto on a 10.8.2 Retina MacBook Pro and experience some strange import problems since the end of last month.
My library holds more then 26.000 images right now and whenever I try to import some new images by dragging them from Finder to the iPhoto library the images (and videos) get imported... but when I try to view the event afterwards it doesn't open and the scrolling of the complete events view is broken. The scrollbar moves but thumbnails of events don't! I'm not able to use the events view anymore after a try to open such broken event.
When I use the regular photos view (the 2nd item in the left menu) I can see and use these new images... until I quit and restart iPhoto. Afterwards many images are missing – see http://cl.ly/JrjF for an example. I can delete those broken events... but not empty the trash afterwards. It just hangs while purging all entries.
    Has anyone experienced this already?
I'm importing iPhone images uploaded to the DropBox "Camera Uploads" folder. But I can't believe it has to do with anything related to this.
I've also disabled the Photostream feature (not the shared ones) in iPhoto because I got tired of splitted events due to Photostream missing some images now and then. Maybe it has to do with that disabled feature. I'll try to reenable it after restoring my 5 days old backup (120GB) a second time now.
Thanks for your help... let's hope I can solve this.

This sounds like a damaged database.
    Try this test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If it's not then back to your main Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto keywords versus Aperture keywords

I was happy to succesfully import my iPhoto library. But surprised that the keywords were distinct from Aperture keywords. That is, I have a keyword "Birds" in iPhoto, but when I go and add the keyword "Birds" (by typing it in the box) to a new photo, I now have two keywords, "Birds" and "Birds (iphoto)" which are distinct. I want them to be the same. How do I do that?

As DaveyJ pointed out, the iPhoto keywords are in a sub-level.
Your best course of action (this will take a while) is to create a smart album and set it to show all images with one of the keywords in the iPhoto group/level.
Once Aperture shows you the applicable set of images, use the Keywords Control bar to add the non-iPhoto version of the keyword to all of the images; i.e., Select All, then click the keyword. With all of the images still selected, use the Keyboard Controls bar again and shift-click on the iPhoto version of the keyword. This will remove it from the selected images.
You could write an AppleScript to help with this process. I've been experimenting and it can be done. You would use a Smart Album to gather the iPhoto keyword images together and then run the script to remove the iPhoto keyword and add the non-iPhoto keyword.
Here's an example script (that works) to get you started:
    tell application "Aperture"
-- set the target to the "Smart beetles" album at the top level of the library.
tell album "Smart beetles" of folder ""
-- get a list of the images in the album.
set x to every image version
-- move through the images one by one, deleting and creating the appropriate keywords
repeat with i from 1 to x's length
    tell x's item i
-- Note. if the keyword is top level, then the parents value is "".
delete (every keyword whose name is "Australia" and parents is "Location")
    make new keyword with properties {name:"Sydney", parents:"Location"}
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell
    end tell
