IPhoto keywords lost on iPhoto Library import
I'm running 10.6, and as such I'm running iPhoto 2009 (v8.1.2) and Aperture v3.2.4. I've imported my iPhoto library using the "Import->Iphoto Library" command into a newly created, blank Aperture library. It runs smoothly, but after the import is completed none of the photos have their keywords. There's maybe 2000 photos so I am not relishing the idea of loading these keywords a second time.
I've only got keywords for my family members, i.e. John, Rachel, Cora, etc. Do I have to create these keywords first in Aperture before doing the import?
Thanks,
John F

I tried a few more times, and now I've got the keywords. I'm not sure exactly why I was not getting them on the previous tries. I did not have to rebuild the original iPhoto library.

IPhoto Keywords in Aperture 2 after importing selected photos
The keywords I set up in iPhoto are not copied over to Aperture 2 after I imported several photos using the iPhoto Browser.
We're being told that there is integration between the iLife apps and Aperture - I don't see it.Yeah, I was really surprised by this when I saw it. Strangely, when you bring photos from Aperture to iPhoto, it brings the tag. This means everything is fine for me because I'm going to import new projects from my camera to Aperture, do my edits, then use iPhoto as my main storage and organization. Still, it's surprising that they didn't enable Aperture to read iPhoto tags.

IPhoto has lost my photo library?!
iPhoto says I have 6000 photos, which I do, but only 800 appear anywhere on the site. One day they were there and a couple weeks later, the next time I wanted to get to them, they were gone. Help?
I have an aperture library of work photos and 2 of my personal photos. And what's on the cloud. And don't even get me started on Dropbox, which imported every work photo I have two, three, sometimes four times, thereby maxing out my dropbox account--and I had told it no before it took them all. At least it only took the work photos. Trying to get them off is an absolute nightmare.

IPhoto 9.4.3 Crashes when importing from Shared Library
I have an early 08 Mac Pro with Mountain Lion running iPhoto 9.4.3. I'm attempting to import a good nubmer of photos from a shared library which resides on my MBP also running 10.8.2 and iPhoto 9.4.3. It starts to import, but after about 10-20 photos (Nikon Raw) it crashes. Consistently. Deleted plist, didn't fix it. Created a new test library, same issue. I'm attempting to copy over several hundred at a time, which I know is ridiculous, but a) I have too many to import going one by one or 20 by 20, and b) it didn't have a problem earlier when doing the same thing. I was importing >300 at a time last week.
My library is large, >100gb if that helps.
Here is the crash report. Please help me figure out what is going on!!!!

Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can import a couple of times successfully the problem lies with your orignal library on the destination Mac.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory. -
How do I import an iPhoto Library (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.
So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

As heading states, I have 100Gb of photos and want to have them "sorted" and viewable through iPhoto. at the moment when i add photos it is importing them from the TC to my mini's hard drive duplicating the pictures and using up valuable space. Is there a way of pointing iPhoto to the photo folder on TC as you would music and videos for iTunes library?
Yes there is but you shouldn't.
Here's why:
1. Is this a wireless connection? If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
Problems with a Referenced Library
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
Issues?
1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save byte of storage space.
3. If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space. -
Is there a way to undo an iphoto library import?
I thought that I had lost my iphoto library... so I did a drag and drop of what I thought was the most recent backup to different desktop iphoto. I thought that the 2 libraries would merge so that I could see if the new library was the correct backup, it wasn't the correct backup, they didn't merge, so now I have lost my original library. Is there a way to undo this import?
I think there's a way to recover your original photos and video files:
1 - copy the Masters (iPhoto 11) or Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) to the Desktop.
2 - open the folder and type Command+F (find).
3 - select Kind is Image and File Size is less than 50 KB.
4 - in the search results window will be all of the very small thumbnail files.
5 - select all of the files and drag them to the Trash.
6 - reset the file size to 100 KB.
7 - check some of the photos to make sure that none are the original file even though they may be very small.
8 - reset the File size again to a size, maybe to 200 KB, that you are sure will not include any of your original files. If you think you might have files less than say 200 KB that would be your original files you will have to check each file found in the search and exclude from the drag to the Trash.
9 - select them all and drag to the Trash.
Now that should leave you with all the original files greater that the final size you used for your search AND all of your video files.
Now create a new iPhoto library and drag the Masters folder into it. That will import all of your files and keep the Events that you had in your original library.
HOWEVER, if you're running iPhoto 8 (09) you will have to import each subfolder inside the Original folder to get the same Events. If you drag the Original folder into the new library window they will be imported into one large event.

Lost my Iphoto 09 when trying to get my library moved from imac to MBP
YIKES...How to begin???
I've lost my iphoto 09 when trying to copy my library from my iMac G5 to my mbp. When I did the migration using migration assistant the photos had not come over. So, I connected the imac to the mbp using a firewire cable, and tried the drag and drop it looked like it went over, but then when i disconnected the imac, there was nothing. Even the iPhoto icon disappeared. I tried reinstalling it with the Applications Install DVD which came with my MBP, but it doesn't have iphoto on it.
Am I going to have to buy a copy of iLife???
Does anyone have any idea what may have happened???
My photos and my music are my most important items on my computer; I did get all the music very successfully, but photos........NOT. HELP, please.
thanks, liselI've lost my iphoto 09 when trying to copy my library from my iMac G5 to my mbp.
Have you looked in your applications folder to see if iPhoto is there?

What did you try to drag and drop - the iPhoto library - the iPhoto program ???
looked like it went over, but then when i disconnected the imac, there was nothing. Even the iPhoto icon disappeared. I tried reinstalling it with the Applications Install DVD which came with my MBP, but it doesn't have iphoto on it.
If iPhoto came on your computer it is on the restore disk that came with it - do a custom install of bundled software only - click here for MacWorld's article on installing Applications from your restore disks.
Am I going to have to buy a copy of iLife???
No

I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -
Iphoto just lost my last import of pictures, how can i get them back?
Uploaded my pictures on iphoto, when I went to add location to them, iphoto crashed, and i had deleted them fr0m my scan disk card. Help how can I get them back.
Patty Asadoriar
<Edited By Host>iphoto crashed, and i had deleted them fr0m my scan disk card.
What happens now, when you open iPhoto? Are the photos not showing in the library or iPhoto still crashing?
What is your current iPhoto version?
If you imported the photos into iPhoto, but are no longer seeing them after the crash, try if rebuilding your iPhoto library will find the photos inside the library. Rebuilding might collect them in a "recovered" event.
To rebuild: That will depend on your iPhoto version - this article explains it for the older versions:
iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library
For iPhoto '11 look at Old Toad's post here:

Can i import "all images" into iphoto to create a new library?
somehow about 4000 photos out of 10000 disappeared when I moved to the newest iphoto and attached my external hard drive with the old iphoto library to it and switched between libraries using alt to open it. i was unable to get iphoto to see the missing 4000 even though they were in all images.
i went to all images on the new mac and dragged it into iphoto and created a new library.
it seemed to work but then a few hours later when i looked at my photos they are all just faces!!!!!!!! and in all images the photos are all just faces too.
what on earth is this?i am trying to understand why so many of my photos in the library seem to be just faces
Because you imported the face thumbnails into iPhoto as noted several times
As My first post explained
All images is just that - a list of all images on your computer - all photos (two or three versions of each in iPhoto), the faces thumbnails, and probably icons and other images that have nothing to do with iPhoto
No bug - simply user error
Yes you can create a new library from the photos in the masters folder
But first try to rebuild the database again - if that does not work this time download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and use it's rebuild command and see how it does - that will create a totally new liberary leaving your existing one untouched so you can go back to it if needed

Installed YOSEMITE. Lost entire iPhoto Library on my iMac. Tried Apple's UPGRADER 6 times. No LUCK. Please help.
Your iPhoto library is usually kept in your pictures folder. Did you look there? If it is still there then you did lose your photos. Just need to get the iPhoto app at the latest level.

I inadvertently imported all of my iPhoto videos to my iMovie library. I have been unable to delete them. How can I delete them from the iMovie library without deleting them fro iPhoto?
Did you import them into an Event Folder? Or are they still just showin up under the iPhoto Videos folder? Anything inside of the iPhoto Videos folder cannot be deleted, because it is under the full control and jurisdiction of iPhoto and is merely 'shared' from iPhoto and made visible to iMovie. Everything else can first be deleted, then moved to the Trash. To find the items that have been marked for deletion under iMovie '11 go to the pull-down tab at the bottom of the iMovie window frame labeled Show: and choose 'Rejected Only'. Then when you see all the clips with red stripes on them Select All (⌘ Command key + a). Then click on the button labeled Move rejected to Trash.

Keywords and new Iphoto Library
Is there a simple way to delete/remove keywords from the photos in my new library?
For some reason (could be my fault) every photo has the same five keywords, I delete them and then they reappear. I've tried quitting Iphoto, opening the old photo library using Iphoto library manager and re opening and they are still there and I can't seem to shift them. I have tried manually removing them and they go and then come back again. Any thoughts how to fix this I would be very grateful to hear.
I was getting on quite well with the iphoto library manager programme which I learnt about here but this iphoto programme is very odd and I haven't warmed to it at all.Whatever was going on seems to have stopped by virtue of deleting the keywords that had attached themselves to nearly all the photos in the 'Manage my keywords' Edit screen. I think I had better go and do some reading about iphoto, so far I have been muddling through having updated from a very old version.
The faces thing is most mysterious too. It often says there are two faces and I name one, but then it insists there is a smaller one too. a frame within a frame, that it wants me to name. I tend to ignore these things and hope they will go away.
If there is an issue with the database Terence - thank you for replying by the way - what am I supposed to do then?
kind regards, Joanna -
IPhoto referenced library, importing
iPhoto looks like a pretty nice app, but I use my photos with a large collection of different picture utilities and keep copies on both Mac, PC and NAS drives. This made using iPhoto with a "referenced" library pretty much a must so all the programs can use the pictures easily.
So unchecking "copy into library" worked ok for me....but one little problem. When I insert an SD card it goes right to iPhoto and when you do an import the new pictures get copied straight into the iPhoto library. Can iPhoto do an import that just drops the files from the SD card into a selected folder?
If iPhoto can't import this way, how do you setup things so iPhoto doesn't automatically launch when you stick in an SD card? ie: just have the SD card (or camera) show up as a folder on the desktop.
Also, I've got hundreds of thousands of pictures in my collection from a lot of sources, does the iPhoto app have a library size or picture count limit?iPhoto looks like a pretty nice app, but I use my photos with a large collection of different picture utilities and keep copies on both Mac, PC and NAS drives. You really can not successfully do that - at best you will be working only with the original photos sans any modifications made in iPhoto

In the iPhoto preferences set action when a camera is connected to "do nothing"
