IPhoto launches when a camera is connected

I recently installed the newest version of iPhoto, and on the first startup it asked me if I wanted "iPhoto to start when a camera is connected to the computer". I mistakenly pressed "yes", and now I can't find anywhere in the preferences where I can turn this feature off. I'd much rather organize the photos on my hard drive before importing them to iPhoto, so I would appreciate it if this feature could be turned off.

Hi A,
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • IPhoto 5.0.4 not launching when digital camera is connected

Normally my iphoto opens automatically when I plug in my camera. But today it decided not to work- I've tried unplugging and replugging but to no avail. I'd appreciate all the help I can get. My camera model is Sony DSC-T1 (silver).
I also had some issues with my Cinema Display- for some reason the screen is blank when I turn on the computer- it's only when I unplug the power supply and replug it than it wakes up. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the power supply.
    Thanks

    Hi there,
Just out of curiousity are you still able to download your images?
I do not have my iPhoto set up to automatically open when a camera is connected to my machine, but if I do open iPhoto, it does connect with camera and I am able to down load images.
PhillyPhan gave great advice and if you tried all 3, I'm stumped but if you can still download photos, then it's some kind of preference that needs to be adjusted... please let us know...

  • ITunes fails to launch when iPhone 5 is connected

With the 11.1.3 (8) upgrade, iTunes fails to launch when my iPhone 5 is connected to my MacPro. iPhoto launches automatically, as expected. When I manually launch iTunes, it will recognize the phone, but I must manually sync it and back it up. When I select the iPhone, open SUMMARY and view Options (at the bottom of the page), Options, the box that says "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" is grayed-out and cannot be checked or selected. I've re-downloaded and re-installed iTunes, to no avail. Any tips on how to restore this basic functionality?

    Hi SC Dad,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has steps to take to enable iTunes to automatically launch when your iPhone is connected that may help:

  • Avoiding iPhoto launch when connecting MP3 player

When I connect a Sansa Clip MP3 player to my Mac, iPhoto launches. There aren't any pictures on the Clip -- it couldn't do anything with them if there were -- but apparently there's something about it that makes iPhoto think it's a camera. The Clip is in MSC mode, so it mounts as a regular volume on my desktop, with folders like AUDIBLE, AUDIOBOOKS, MUSIC, PODCASTS, and RECORD... nothing that (to me at least) says "I'm a camera."
I do want iPhoto to launch when cameras and photo-bearing SD cards are inserted, so I don't want to disable its auto-launch feature completely -- I just don't want it to think that the Clip is a camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or know what it is about an external "drive" that leads OS X to treat it as a photo source?
    Thanks!

Thanks, Larry, but that doesn't appear to be the case, at least not with my quick test. I have a regular 4G USB flash drive that's formatted as FAT. When I plug it in, it mounts normally, but iPhoto doesn't launch. Could it be something else, or am I missing something? Thanks again!

  • How to Stop iPhoto launch when iPod Touch is docked?

Each and every time I dock the iPod Touch (2nd Gen), iPhoto opens and asks if I want to import new photos. Every time!
But I already imported them and I want to keep them (screenshots made with iPod Touch image capture). So why does it keep asking?
How can I stop the automatic launch of iPhoto to ask this same question?
There are no settings in iTunes for the connected iPod Touch. There are no settings in iPhoto.
And I have reviewed past messages suggesting there is a setting in the Mac OSX app called "Image Capture" - "Down load to: Picture, Movies and Music folder" Automatic Task: set to None - but that does not work either.
What else can I do? It is VERY annoying!
    Thanks & Aloha, AW

For some reason it does not work that way. You could always try turning off the ability to open iPhoto when a camera-like device is attached, using Grab.
Mind you, if they are imported into iPhoto and you sync images with the iPod touch, then you might as well delete from that folder otherwise they are duplicated on the touch.

  • Stopping the iPhoto launch when syncing an iDevice to iTunes

Am I overlooking a simple way to prevent iPhoto automatically launching on my Mac when I connect one of my iDevices (iPad, iPhone, iPod, etc) to sync them manually with iTunes?
I am not streaming photos over iCloud, and that option is off on each of the iDevices as well as iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    TwinTiger

    Thanks Steve,
Yes, I agree that does happen when no photos are present on an iDevice when it is being "hard" sync'ed.
However my daughters enjoy saving images from various kid's sites on their iPads, which I do not want to have collected into my iPhoto library, when I sync their iDevices for music and apps.  It would be great therefore to be able to turn off the iPhoto 'pre-sync' when syncing those (and other) devices.  If I can.
I would be risking family harmony if I deleted their images before syncing!
    Trust this explains why.

  • IPhoto launches when I switch my iPhone on. Why?

I have a Macbook Pro and I charge my iPhone 3GS from it. When I switch the phone on (from being fully off), iPhoto launches. How can I make this stop? As far as I can see there are no photos on the phone needing to be imported into iPhoto.
    Thanks!

It's a Preference setting which I believe you find in iPhoto.
Pretty much every photo app has a preference to open automtically if it sees a camera attached to the USB port and it is seeing your iPhone as a camera (which it is)
If it's nt in the iPhoto preferences, it will be in the iTunes preferences

  • "When a camera is connected open"  Set to import Images

I loaded the EOS utility for my 50D and now when I plug the camera in Aperture 2 stopped bringing up the Import wizard automatically.
So I then removed the EOS Image capture Utility from the applications folder as I did not want to use it anyway .

  • IPhoto launching when it shouldn't?

is there a good reason why suddenly iPhoto launches whenever i plug in a little keychain flash drive? it never did so before, and i've had the drive for probably two years now.
    thanks.

    thanks for the response. but...
first, there was nothing new on that drive that wasn't always there, and it never used to launch iPhoto. to be sure, i removed ever single graphic file from the drive, and it makes no difference. it still launches iPhoto.
second, when the drive loads in iPhoto, it's not trying to download anything. it goes to the same screen that comes up when i plug in my digital camera, but says "There are no items to import". under the source info in the lower left, it says "No items". there has to be SOMETHING different that's making this happen when it never did before...

    Hi Neil -
Thanks for getting back so quickly.  Unfortunately this didn't do the trick.
Perhaps I should have been more specific: I'm "adding the photos" to my library.  Each time I do this iPhoto launches.
    Thanks!

  • IPhoto launches when I don't want it to

Whenever I insert my thumb drive, iPhoto launches. How do I stop this irritating behavior?

1 - post in the iPhoto 6 forum as a starting point
2 - I believe that in iPhoto 6 you set this preference in image capture not iPhoto - but beware any answers you get in the iPhoto '08 forum may not be correct for other versions - that is why there are separate forums for each version

  • IPhoto '08 Now Acting Psycho When A Camera Is Connected ...

    Hello Folks,
My iPhoto seems to be acting psycho all of a sudden when i have a camera connected that contains digital photos that i'm planning to import. My iPhoto is iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5 (378) & i'm running Mac OS X 10.5.5 (Leopard). In the last couple of days now, when i have a camera connected, iPhoto loads & displays all the photos contained on the memory card in the camera (whether i want it to or not), & then the only button or option that appears to be active is the option to import EVERYTHING from the camera (which is NOT what i want to do). The button that is for importing only selected items from the camera is grayed out. Also, everything in the display seems to be frozen & i can't select anything else to be displayed like any of my libraries or albums.
iPhoto was NOT behaving like this before, & a few days ago it was definitely behaving "normally". i know this for sure because i take photos very frequently & am importing them into iPhoto every couple of days or so. i can't remember for sure, but i downloaded & installed quite a few software updates in the last few days & i'm wondering if this is a new iPhoto update gone awry & causing this psycho behavior (i can't remember if there was an iPhoto update among all those s/w updates that were installed). Before, when i had a camera connected, i could still click on any of the libraries or albums i wanted to, the display was not frozen or locked up like this, & i was able to selectively import what i wanted from the camera.
Can anyone please tell me what is wrong w/iPhoto & how to do to get it to go back to behaving normally? For now, i cannot even import photos from the camera w/iPhoto behaving so abnormally, i have to 1st copy the desired photos to a folder (from outside of iPhoto) & then import the photos into iPhoto from the folder containing the photos but all while the camera is NOT connected. Thanx in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Disconnect Error when Digital camera is connected

This is the third time now the Disconnect Error pops up when I connect and turn on my digital camera. After the error pop-up goes away, iPhoto asks if I want to import photos and all photos import fine.
I looked in Console to see if there is anything and I found this:
    ** (process:5105): CRITICAL **: gaimaccount_getstate: assertion `account != NULL' failed
    2007-04-26 21:53:03.369 iPhoto[5747] * -[NSTextField setAllowsMultipleSelection:]: selector not recognized [self = 0xc1d1d30]
It all started after I switched USB cables, both are from Sony, 1 for the digital camera and the other for the digital camcorder. I tried the digital cameras original cable but I still got the same error pop-up.
What is causing the disconnect error when I always Eject the icon before disconnecting the USB cable?

    R.Bud.U:
Try reformatting the card with the camera. Not just erase but a reformat. I do that after every upload. See if that will clean up that error message.
