IPhoto launching at startup, iSight no longer works, 10.4.8 to blame?

My built-in iSight (first 17" intel iMac) is "in use by another application" when I attempt to use it from iMovie, iChat, or Photo Booth. When I tried disconnecting everything and rebooting, I discovered that iPhoto is launching at startup.
The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is a system update about a week ago, including 10.4.8 and whatever apps were updated.
iPhoto is not set to launch in either the StartupItems folder or my user's login items. It also does not show as checked when I ctrl-click on it in the dock.
So far I've tried resetting the PRAM and installing MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.dmg to no avail. I see a reference to a "Combo Update" in another unrelated thread (network problems). Does anyone recommend this? Or am I just hosed until 10.5 comes out.

Problem solved. It was a digital camera driver which is no longer compatible since the new update.
03: Check your system console and see if you have any malloc errors. Are you using anything you had to install drivers for? You get the starfish for being considerate enough to reply. I hope you get it worked out.

  • Built in iSight no longer works in 10.4.10

After I installed the 10.4.10 update and rebooted my iSight no longer works. If I open Photo Booth to test it out it starts out normal then very quickly starts to fade down to complete black, yet still remains on as indicated by the green light.
Taking pictures just results in a black square. I tried removing the Photo Booth prefs but that did nothing. Reinstalling the 10.4.10 combo update also did nothing.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Chadsere
Because you made your post "in response to" me, I will respond, although, from your wording, you may have intended your post for the original poster.
adam1185's question has been marked "Answered", which indicates that he does not expect further input. Therefore, you may not see a response from him. However, I agree with your interpretation that "it just magically started working again" for him.
By whatever method, you will want to get your problems resolved while you still have warranty coverage for your MacBook.
Notwithstanding what is reported, unless something changes, computers will not heal themselves. Because Mac OS X performs certain checks on your hard drive files at every startup, my guess is that most successes credited to "magic" are likely due to restarts. However, any fix that gets things working for you is a good fix.
If you have not already done so, apply the 10.4.10 Combo Updater using the method described above. That often helps correct iSight problems.
If your problem persists, unless your problem is exactly the same as adam1185's, I suggest you start a new topic with as much detail as possible about your system and problem. Your issues deserve the individual attention that they will get in threads of your own.
    Cheers,

  • Isight no longer works after yosemite

My built in isight no longer works on my early 2013 macbook pro with retinal display. After visiting the forums , engaging in live chats with apple support and taking my computer in to the genius bar I've isolated the problem to a hardware malfunction that most likely occurred after the Yosemite install. Apple (at the apple store level) is not taking resposibilty for the problem and suggests that the camera needs to be replaced at a cost of roughly 400$. To make matters worse my computer is out of warranty and I did not buy applecare. Am i justified in escalating my grievance further up the Apple support chain to get my isight replaced at no charge ? My argument is that if the Yosemite firmware caused a hardware malfunction then its a engineering flaw and these MacBooks need to be recalled.

Yes.  It will not cost anything to ask to politely discuss your problem with a Manager.

  • IPhoto launches on startup after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I am using an Intel Mini and upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now, on startup Iphoto launches and is apparently seeing my Kodak ESP 5 printer as a camera. If I turn off the printer before starting the Mac, iPhoto does not auto-launch. There are no SD Ram cards in the printer that would be confused for a camera connected by USB. Is there any way to fix this?

Stil_III, this is the reponse I reached from Kodak
Andrew Healey (13:22:24): I have a 5300 Kodak all in one printer. I have a Mac. I have just installed Mac OS 10.6 and everytime I strat up my machine iPhoto opens and thinks the Kodak printer is a camera and sets it up as a "EasyShare Ai" device. I have checked the Apple support site and a number of other Mac users are experiencing the same issue. I updated the Easy Share software and firmware.
(13:22:24)[An agent will be with you shortly.]
    (13:22:41 PM)[You are now chatting with Vishal J .]
Vishal J (13:22:47 PM): Welcome to Kodak, my name is Vishal. Please wait while I review your question.
Vishal J (13:24:30 PM): As I understand, whenever you turn on your printer, you get popup of camera detected?
Andrew Healey (13:25:55 PM): No everytime start up my computer iPhoto launches as it thinks I have a camera called EasyShare Ai attached
Vishal J (13:29:37 PM): I will take care of the issue.
Vishal J (13:29:57 PM): May I have the Kodak Service Number of the printer? It is located under the Access panel towards the left side on a white bar-coded sticker on the printer.
Andrew Healey (13:30:41 PM): Sorry but I am at work and do not have access to the printer
    Vishal J (13:30:54 PM): Not a problem.
Vishal J (13:32:16 PM): Andrew, I would like to inform you that as your Kodak printer has scanner in it. Scanner use the same drivers as the camera. Therefore whenever you turn on the printer, it detects the camera. I would like to inform you that it is normal.
Andrew Healey (13:33:04 PM): Vishal J but this did not happen with Mac OS 10.5. Is it a new issue?
Vishal J (13:34:56 PM): Andrew, probably in your Mac OS 10.5 autoplay options would be disabled, as in normal scenarios, autoplay options are enabled so that it can automatically detect the other devices, like your printer, cameras, CD etc.
Andrew Healey (13:35:46 PM): OK thanks I will check my setiings tonight. Vishal thanks for your help. Andrew
Vishal J (13:36:02 PM): You are welcome.

  • Isight no longer works after snow leopard upgrade

my isight no longer is available directly after snow leopard upgrade on my macbook black. Anyone else with the same problem? The isight does not show up in 'about this mac' under USB and I tried resetting SMC and PRAM.

    Hi,
In Leopard there was an App called iSight Update app that was in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services
This does not seem to be there in Snow Leopard.
An issue with some computers with the camera was that in System Preferences > Displays the Colours needed to be set to Millions.
Also check the Hard Drive/System/Library/Extensions folder and see that you have the Apple_iSight.kext (this is likely to handle the Internal iSights as well).
    One last thing.
Some Web sites can make use of the camera using Flash.
If that tab is still open the Browser may have use of the camera.
It sounds like you have done computer restarts and this will not be the case unless the browser is set to go back to that page.

  • ISight no longer working with Photo Booth

While my Isight works perfectly with iCHat, it no longer turns on when I start Photo Booth. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this.

    Hi Kane,
Try this. Go to Home-Library-Preferences. Locate the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist. Drag it to the trash and delete it. Then open Photobooth again.

  • ISight No Longer works on MPB :(

Anyone have their iSight built in camera just stop working? I have a first gen MBP and it just stopped working today. I tried a PMU reset... PhotoBooth and iChat no longer detects any video sources....
I have had so many problems with my MBP -- had to change my logic board and my fans already and I bought this machine last July. I think i got stuck with a lemon!
Any advice on how to fix my camera? I raelly hope I dont have to take in my MBP for a 3rd time in the same year.
    Many Thanks,
    O.

Try a reset of Parameter RAM
Hold down apple/option/p/r keys at Boot and wait for 3 chimes before releasing.

  • ISight no longer working after 10.4.5 update

I have been using iSight successfully for about a year or more. About a week ago or so, I did the system upgrade to 10.4.5. I used Mac utilities to "fix" the permissions afterwards as usual. My son and daughter (one in Australia and one in New York) did the same. Now we are unable to use iSight for either video or audio. We get the message that the other person (the answerer) has failed to answer, even though we know this isn't true. None of us has done anything else to the computer that would warrant this meltdown. Does anyone else know of problems with 10.4.5? Also, how can one "go back" to 10.4.4. We assume iSight would work fine then.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hello, chessie1. Before you go to the trouble backing down to 10.4.4, try applying the 10.4.5 Combo Update as suggested in How I Update My Mac OS X.
I, my regular chat buddies, and most of the iChat AV 3 users with whom I have tested are all using 10.4.5 with fine results. You should not need to retreat to 10.4.4.
If the combo updater does not completely resolve your problem, you might want to try the other relevant suggestions from Help for iChat AV 3 Problems and How to get iChat AV working again.

  • ISight no longer works

OK, hope the collective wisdom here can help me out.
I recently unpacked my iSight after moving. Before i moved i was using my iSight with my G5 [i believe i was at 10.4 when i moved]. I put the camera back in its original packaging for transport, but didn't get it back out right away.
This afternoon i dug it out for fun and find that none of my machines recognizes it. I've tried multiple cables, different ports on each machine, and even tried the QT 7.0.1 reinstaller on my PB.
All i get now when i plug the camera in is the green light. The light stays on no matter if the lens cover is open or closed. I also don't hear any focusing happening.
Is this camera dead, or is there some sort of reset that i'm missing? I'd hate to be out the cash, since i've had this iSight for a few years, and am sure i'm out of warranty period.
    Thanks in advance.
    PowerMac G5 1.8Ghz/PowerBook G4 1.87Ghz/PowerMac G4 867Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It sounds to me as if your iSight needs professional help.
Humidity or shock may have damaged your iSight in moving or long-term storage. (I never put my iSight back in its plastic case without a fresh desiccant pack.)
You seem to have been thorough in your testing, but if you missed any of the suggested checks in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional, try them now.
If your iSight fails, see your Apple Service Technician for a professional check.

  • IPhoto launches on startup

Ever since I've started using my iPhone, iPhoto always launces when I start my Mac. This happens whether or not the phone is connected. Any thoughts?
I recall in OS9 there was a startup items folder. Does that exist anymore. Don't see anything similar in system preferences.
    Thanks

  • ISight on Bootcamp Windows 7 no longer working

After upgrading to Lion OS X, my iSight no longer works on Bootcamp Windows 7. It formerly worked under Snow Leopard's Bootcamp Win 7.

i would believe it might be the limiting of the number of programs during startup.
do a msconfig and configure it to startup only windows item only. See if this makes any diference

  • Isight + Tiger No longer works

Since I have upgraded to Tiger my Isight no longer works. I can start a chat but after about 10 to 40 seconds it disconnects me. I have taken it in for repair and they all tell me it is fine. If I go to preferences, video, I can see myself, I also have the following which I never had before:
    Microphone - Isight built in
    Band with - None
I have played with these options but I still get disconnected. I used to have an option Camera - Isight I no longer have that option but I still see myself.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? So far I'm stumped and even the repair person can't figure it out.
    Thanks,
    Alice

  • Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software update, startup disk, iCloud, etc. no longer will launch. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use. No go!

Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software Update, Startup Disk, iCloud, Time Machine, Notifications, etc. no longer will launch even though they do show their icons in the system preferences window. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use with a "Cancel" or "OK" choice. After I click on "OK" the window just keeps reappearing with the same choices and the pane I wish to use still remains inoperative. Third party preference panes DO work.
Reinstalling OSX Mountain Lion did not help. Neither did throwing away preferences.plist.

    Hi Jeff,
Tried to reply with my iPhone but not easy! Anyway, back on the laptop now. Yes the crash was bad but Tek support at Prism Sound was really good. In the end I rebuilt the whole system on a new disk which took a couple of days with all the plugins, softsynths etc.... but there seemed to be no alternative in my case, and this was agreed with Prism sound as being the only alternative left to me. I still don't really know what caused the crash but ML and Orpheus are both working fine now. Let's face it, you'll have to update at sometime..maybe best to pick some time between projects On balance, I suspect that my problems were unique to my system and that your installation will go ok.
    Hope it goes well,
    Rick

What version of iPhoto do you have?  With Yosemite you must be running iPhoto 9.6.1 which is a available from the App Store.  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll have to download and apply the  iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 to the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.6.1. It'll be located in the Applications/Utilities folder after downloading.

As long as the memory pressure is in the green and constant and you're not seeing a lot of SWODs you shouldn't be concerned about the memory.  Of course increasing memory will nearly always improve general system and application performance. But you didn't mention slowness as part of your problem.

  • Many videos from iPhone that were in iPhoto no longer work and all have lost their thumbnails. It won't let me import videos at all now.

After installing Yosemite many of the videos I had in iPhoto won't play at all. All the videos (including missing ones) now have dashes around a thumbnail shape instead of the thumbnails that were there. When I click on the thumbnail shape of any of the ones it won't play it says "The operation couldn't be completed (OSStatus error -54.)"  These are videos that were there in Mavericks before I installed Yosemite and worked fine then.  Also now I am unable to import any videos from my iPhone or my desktop, even ones that it took before. It says the file is an unrecognized format.
What I want to know is - is this on purpose?  Did Apple suddenly withdraw all support for videos in iPhoto and in the process destroy the ones that were there or is something wrong with my system? Do other people see thumbnails and are able to play videos and import new ones in iPhoto in Yosemite? I wouldn't be surprised if something is wrong with my system since after upgrading to Yosemite ALL the thousands of carefully organized songs in my iTunes playlists were missing and I don't think that was on purpose but the fact that I can't import new videos makes me think this is on purpose.
If this is on purpose, if iPhoto on Yosemite is really no longer able to take videos what can I use instead?   In iPhoto my many videos were organized into folders and subfolders and sub-sub folders.  I can't do that in iTunes and also can't adjust thumbnail size in iTunes so videos take up way too much space there. Any suggestions on third party programs that will let me organize videos into folders and subfolders, etc and see thumbnails at small sizes?  I just need to be able to organize the videos and click them to play.

    THANK YOU!
I noticed this morning a lot of the thumbnails were back that weren't there last night.  It must have very slowly been bringing them back, but the videos that would not play at all were still not working and there were still quite a few without thumbnails.  I followed your suggestion and I'm amazed! That actually fixed everything!  Now all the thumbnails are back, the videos that wouldn't play at all now work fine, and iPhoto let me import the videos that it wouldn't last night .  I hope it stays like that but at least I know what to do if this happens again, if I dare to install any updates.
What does holding down the option key with launching the program do?  I might need to use this again or with other programs.
