IPhoto layout

I just got a new iMac and transferred all the data on my previous iMac with much older iPhoto version on it. The layout is completely unusable and does not look anything like my previous iPhoto or the video's template. All that shows are the albums; there is no toolbar on the left side showing the library or any albums I have made. Once I go into an album that has been creating by iPhoto based on the date the pictures were taken, I have no way of returning to the master grid of albums unless I exit and re-enter the whole application. I tried to upload a few pics onto Facebook, and the whole album uploaded and now I am stuck in that uploaded album with no way of returning to the library. I have not restarted, but am getting very frustrated with the layout on the whole. How do I get my toolbar and does this have anything to do with importing the photos from an earlier version of iPhoto?
Thanks
Hillary

1 - you do not import old iPhoto libraries into new (or any) iPhoto libraries - you copy the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto which converts your library to the new format
2 - You post may be reference this or simply referencing that you have not taken time to see how the new iPhoto works - since you do not mention which old version you have any ideas I might have would be wild guesses
3 - It would pay to take the iPhoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - invest a few minutes with them and eliminate hours of wasted effort and great frustration
LN
Note that the source pane is n the left and shows your albums, etc - the toolbar is on the bottom and its contents can be changed under the view menu ==> show in toolbar

  • Use of PDFs in iPhoto layouts

I've been intrigued by some of the discussion about creating properly designed pages in Apple's Pages, Adobe's InDesign, etc, and then saving them as PDFs, opening them up in Photoshop, saving the pages as JPEGS, and then importing the whole thing into an Aperture (or iPhoto) page. Before I spend any money on this, I'd like to know what kind of loss one might experience in terms of both the type quality and image quality by going this route. Anyone have any experience along these lines? Thank you.

    Dan:
You really don't have to use Photoshop in the process of getting a PDF file of a page into iPhoto. Just do a print to pdf of the page you want to use and select the Send PDF to iPhoto option. A 1600 x 1200 pixel jpg of that page will be created and imported into iPhoto. You can use Automator to edit that workflow to increase the dpi to 300 dip creating a 3300 x 2500 pixel jpg version. The workflow you would want to edit is located in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto '08 Custom Layout

Is it possible to customize my page layouts any other way than by using the layouts in the pulldown menu?

Yes and no - you can not customize the iPhoto layouts but you can do pages in other packages (pages, MS word, PagerMaker, etc) and do a print to PDF using the send PDF to iPhoto option and then place the image as a full page photo - see Old Toad's tutorial #19 for details - http://web.me.com/toad.hall/NewTutorials/main19.html

  • How do I see different iPhoto events on my Apple TV screensaver?  I was able to see all my photos in the past, now the screensaver is only one particular event.

I was able to see all my photos previously.  When I click on Computers or Screensaver, an automatic download begins, but the same event keeps loading.

I know the exact theme/page you're referring to... you could create a book with that layout in iPhoto and then export the book as jpgs by selecting Print, then clicking the pdf button and select pdf to folder as jpeg. You can select just the one page by selecting the print from X to X page numbers inthe print dialog box. Just remember that the number on the page doesn't necessarily correspond to the actual page number--count the pages in the preview to determine which page you're on. iPhoto doesn't number the cover or intro page, but the print dialog counts them.
This will create a new jpg file that you can import to Aperture and use in an Aperture book on a full page bleed formatted page. I've used a combination of Pages and iPhoto layouts to create many of the books I've done and use the Print>PDF to folder as jpeg to export the files, which I then import as full page bleeds into Blurb's booksmart (don't care for many of their layouts). The only potential issue is the proportion isn't always the same, and the resolution from the pdf exports is a bit lower than I'd like--but if I'm using Blurb, their books are smaller, so it works out okay.

  • IPhoto books and Photoshop

    Hello,
I have assembled my first book and had it printed as a folio medium and large soft cover book. I discovered this forum after having sent the books up to Apple to be printed so these books have not benefited from the archived wisdom of everyones comments. Sure enough the medium book shows the half tone quality problems in the non full page images. I am hoping that I can improve the quality of my books for the next try.
    Issues with the Medium sized book;
Image quality on the non full page images (I have since downloaded pref setter and made the adjustments as described in another post- one setting was at 300 dpi and the other two I changed from 150 to 300)
    Issues with the large book
There was no separation between images on pages with two images. The small book had a narrow white space separating the two images. Is there any way to make sure that that line is there in the big book? (it did not show up in my pdf preview of the book)
Are there any tricks for improving image quality in the big book? I should say that my images are from and Olympus C8080 and they are jpgs 240 dpi 13.6" x 10.2"
    Issues common to both books.
I found the text quite hard to work with and I would like to create a Jpg in photoshop that has the text that I want on it in order to bypass the limitations of the iPhoto layout. Are there any suggestions about Canvass size or resolution? Will the quality of text be OK?
Thanks so much for considering these questions

    nektai:
The halftone appearance with the medium size book was evident in my books ever with the 300 dpi change. There was a post from a user who had received books from different printing sites in the US, west coast and east coast. His experience was that the east coast book better image quality.
Regarding the space between the two photos, are your photos cropped to the recommended 4:3 ratio? I did notice that if I put a 4x6 cropped photo into one of the frames and Control-click and select Fit Photo to Frame" it will be reduced a bit and leave a white space at the bottom and top.
If you're going to use a 1 photo per page layout and the text on the image file, you'll be best served to find a them that has a full page layout like Picture Book. For the large size I would make the canvas 8.5 x 11 inches at 180 dpi minimum. Then when you place it in the 1 photo per page frame and select the Fit Photo to Frame option it gets fitted without any cropping of the image. If the image is the 4:3 ratio and is placed in the frame if the Fit option is not selected some of the image will be cropped. If the Fit is selected it will be reduced so it will fit horizontally but smaller vertically. So use a letter sized canvas.

  • Can't see my pictures on iphoto

I cannot view my pictures on iphoto until i click on the event album and then click on the dotted outline of what would be a photo and then i can finally see my photo on the big screen. I dont know how to see my pictures through the album though. I'd like to fix it because i can't view a picture unless i click on each one individually. Also, my whole iphoto layout looks grey and black. None of the links for events, photos, faces or places has any color to it, everything is grey as if it's not active and not working. Please help me out!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
Also, my whole iphoto layout looks grey and black. None of the links for events, photos, faces or places has any color to it, everything is grey
That's a design decision by Apple. IPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback

  • Ordering an iPhoto laid out book from another service

Hello, and thanks upfront for the information.
I have ordered large photo books from Apple in the past and been happy with the quality. But their prices are high, and for large books you can do much better cost wise at other sites. Some users have told me that any iPhoto layout can be saved as a PDF and sent to any print service. Has anyone done this process? Is the resulting PDF file of the same quality as the output sent to Apple's print service (ignoring the quality of the new print vendor)?
    Cheers,
    Josh

    Old Toad,
Blurb has a PDF upload service. See the following link.
    http://www.blurb.com/make/pdftobook
My question is if anyway has experience using this service (or similar services). I'm curious if the iPhoto output file mets Blurbs targets, or if adjustments are needed and how complicated they may be. You can also see Blurbs prices for a dustcover or Imagewrap books of 100 pages are nearly 50% of Apple's.
Also, you mentioned that iPhoto makes two PDF's, one with cover/dustcover artwork and one without. How do I access each type? I'm sure one is access by telling iPhoto to "Print to PDF", however I'm not sure how to get the other file.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Iphoto Book -- client approval

I'm designing an Iphoto book for a client and want to send them a versionto look over. I tried saving it as a PDF in Iphoto, but doing it that way loses the "book format" -- no drop shadows or outlines to show the book dimensions. It loses the effect of seeing it as a book.
Any thoughts on how to include that formating.
What I've done as a workaround is to use Preview's Grab and save the images from Iphoto layout page. It works okay, but it's a little slow, especially sense I'm doing three different layouts.
    thanks.

    M.
While in the book mode type Command+P. Once the Print window comes up go to the PDF menu button and select Save as PDF. That will give you a different pdf than the one you get via the Preview/Save as PDf. Each cover, outside and inside, front and back, will be as a page in the book.
This slideshow page shows how each page will look if you do it that way.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto Book PDF - Replacement

Has anyone out there tried to replace the iPhoto generated book PDF with a PDF from another source just before ordering? Is it possible?
My thinking is that this way you could create the PDF with a more powerful layout application (freedom from templates etc.) and insert it at the crucial moment, after creating a dummy book with the same specifications from within iPhoto. This way the PDF would also be smaller than if using full bleed images.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Well, you don't order from a PDF, so no... however I use InDesign to design the books, export as a High Quality Print (300 dpi) pdf, then from Acrobat Pro export them back as .jpgs and drag into iPhoto. Kinda going around the barn, but it works like a charm and allows me to make books that are not available from straight iPhoto layouts.

  • Why Please. I am unable to Merge iPhotos Events

Very sorry to start the title as above
Since the latest update my iPhoto is no longer worth using.
I used to be able to put important pictures from my iPhone and drag and drop and any Event Folder i choice
I also use to be able to pick a Complete event folder and merge into another.
Now is seems this option is no longer available. WHY!
p.s. the new iMac iPhoto layout look is just a waste of time.

Please explain a bit more. Which update are you referring to?
Are you now using the recently released Photos for Mac with MacoS X 10.10.3 Yosemite, or are you referring to an iPhoto '11 update?
I also use to be able to pick a event folder and merge into another. Cannot anymore.
Since the update i cannot do this any more, i do have other issues but this is the main one that i am ****** off about..
If you are now using "Photos for Mac" you cannot merge events any longer, because three are no events in Photos. The library will be automatically split into Moments, based on date  and location data.

if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.
    many thanks for your help.

Photos are added to book in chronological order.  So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.

  • Can i make a book in iPhoto without using any of the built in layout templates, which are too limiting when i have already cropped my pictures to show just what I want. Ideally I just want to drag and drop and arrange and size the pictures myself

If you have Pages you can create customs pages for your book as TD suggested. If you have Pages from iWork 09 or 11 this app will add 80 or so additional frames to those offered:  Frames and Strokes Installer. Don't use it on the latest Pages version, however.
This tutorial shows how to create a custom page with the theme's background: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.  Once the page is complete to get it into iPhoto as a jpeg file follow these steps:
Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. For books to be printed choose 300 dpi.

  • Is it possible to create a custom photo layout when creating a photo book in iphoto?

Is it possible to create a custom photo layout when creating a photobook in iphoto? How about adding text boxes?

    Yes and no
You can not make a custom template nor can you modify one
You can do a page in other software and then print to PDF using the send PDF to iPhoto option and place the resulting image as a full page photo - See Old Toad's tutorial No.19 for more information.

On iPhoto, I can no longer access the 'Classic' option which would lay out my photos on the page. It will send them as attachments only. I need the page layout for my work. Any thoughts as to why this has changed? It used to fully lay out the photos so I could add notes and detailed information before I sent them. I am thinking it is something simple that I have just missed...

The "Photos" view has been replaced by the Media Browser.
Most applications will show you the Photos icon in the Sidebar, when you need to select photos in a file chooser dialoge. Mail, Safari, the iWork apps. See Terence Devlin's User Tip: How to Access Files in iPhoto
For example, in the File > Open dialogue in Preview I am seeing this in the sidebar.

  • Pages' Missing Features

I think there's still a number of features that make Pages for iPad inferior to using a word processor (say, OpenOffice) on a netbook, which is disappointing because I'd really love to get rid of my netbook and just use my iPad and external keyboard.
