Iphoto librairy : masters and previews

Hi there !
I'm French so please excuse me if i make mistakes....
I have a question in relation with this link
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3161569?start=0&tstart=0
I tried to write a question to Terence Devlin but i did not manage...
So I ask my question to everybody !
I did understand that pictures that are in "masters" AND in "previews" comes from a matter of rotation of the picture.
But, WHY, when I watch the picture from "masters", this picture has the same orientation as the one in "previews" ?
Other question : if I turn off the Auto-Rotate feature on my camera, i will have to rotate my pictures myself in iphoto, so it will create another picture in preview. Am I right ?
How can i do to stop having those pictures twice ?
Thanks a lot to everybody !

but having twice the same picture is useless, don't you think ?
Not necessarily.  It's the nature of  having cameras that autorotate photos for you. That's why I rotate photos before importing into iPhoto. If you take an overwhelming amount of portrait oriented photos then you would be better off following the workflow I posted earlier in order to save space.  Otherwise I don't think it would make much difference.  The MacBook Air is designed as a lightweight traveling device and often is used in conjunction with a desktop Mac at home. With that type of setup I would have my primary library on the desktop Mac and a smaller traveling library on the Air.  I would use the paid version of   iPhoto Library Manager to transfer necessary photos via albums or events between the libraries as needed. The Air just isn't designed to handle the large libraries due to its limited storage capability.  But that's just my philosophy.
If you edit a "normal" landscape photos you will automatically get a copy because iPhoto keeps the original/master file as its digital negative like all DAM (digital asset management) applications.  There are high end DAM apps that you can edit and save the edited version over the original file if so desired.   Media Pro 1 is one of them.  I use it for may primary DAM work and iPhoto for special projects like books (a separate library for each book), cards, calendars, etc.

  • Masters and previews all mixed up

Recently the wife has started organizing our large (over 73 gigs) iPhoto library and complained that many of the photos were displaying as small: thumbnail sized. Investigating, I opened the iPhoto Library and found that the contents of the Masters and Previews were quite jumbled. Using Spotlight I quickly discovered that for any given file there were at least 2 versions of each image, a full size (say 1.2MB or so) and a preview (60KB or so) but my Masters directory contains hundreds if not thousands of the little previews and there are lots of the full size images in Previews.
It also seems that, among the confused images, all the full size images have the uppercase "JPG" extension and the previews are lowercase.
I have tried repairing twice to no avail. I haven't rebuilt because I suspect it would compound the problem by making previews of my misplaced previews etc etc. I could easily use the Finder to search/sort by file type and size, save all the originals and start a new library, but I don't want to lose all the metadata, retouching, and so on. I suspect the problem started when migrating to new Macs from our old G5 and iPhoto 6. What's the best way out of this mess?

Sounds like when you migrated you imported your old library into iPhtoo on your new system
NEVER import an iPhoto library into iPhoto - it does not wrok and creates a massinve mess
The only real solution is to go back and do it correctly - drag the bad library to the desktop and then Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • I want to know the difference between iphoto master folder and previews folder

I want to know the difference between iphoto library master folder and previews folder.. my pictures is stored in master but part of them is also copied into previews.. it occupied too much space.. if I can't change anything in iphoto library, any way to save the space for iphoto? 70G for almost 15,000 pictures, is it reasonable?
i use mac book pro, ilife 11..

70GB for 15,000 photos is reasonable, yes, if the photo files are large.
DO NOT meddle with the contents of your iPhoto Library in any other way than using the commands available in the iPhoto application. What appear to be duplicate files stored in different parts of the library are NOT duplicates, and if you attempt to save space by deleting things in the Finder, you will wreck your library and land in a world of trouble.

  • Transfer photos from iPhone to mac without iPhoto / image capture and preview doesn't see device

Hello. I'd like to transfer photos from my iPhone to my Mac. I read (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083) that iPhoto is the standard application for that; I'd like to do without. I read that image capture (http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/8954/copy-photos-off-iphone-without-iph oto) or even Preview (http://osxdaily.com/2010/07/10/transfer-photos-from-iphone-to-computer/)  could help. Neither of them see my iPhone although cable connected and iTunes does. So my question is two: If Preview and Image Capture are ineed supposed to, why don't they? And is there any other way?
    Thanks

I dont like iphoto so the easiest way to do it is using image capture, just plug in your iphone launch image capture from your applications folder and import all images or just selected images into any folder you want.
Moreover, you can follow this page about how to transfer photo/pictures from iPhone to Mac, which give an easy guide to figure out this problem.
    Have a good luck!

  • Importing Masters and Versions from iPhoto

Is it possible to import both Masters and the associated Adjusted Versions from iPhoto into Aperture 3?
The manual tells how to import the masters into the Aperture library but does not seem to tell how to import the corresponding versions adjusted in iPhoto.

In iPhoto all images are masters in a sense. When you adjusted an image in iPhoto a duplicate image was made and the adjustments were done to the duplicate giving you two separate files.
When you import your iPhoto library into Aperture these two files (the original and the adjusted image) are two separate files as far as Aperture is concerned. Aperture will keep them together and apply keywords to each to help you sort it all out once you running the Aperture library but they will not have the same master version relationship that masters and versions created in Aperture have.
So when you import your iPhoto library all images will come over, you don't need to do anything special to get the adjusted images.

  • NEF files stopped being displayed on iPhoto and Preview

    Hi everybody,
all of a sudden my iPhoto and Preview show Nikon NEF files with weird colors. My OSX is 10.8.4 + Camera Raw 8.1. I have updated my NEF codec and tried to reinstall iPhoto from scratch but I got nowhere. Anyone with the same trouble?
here's an example of what I get:
    Thanks

RAW 4.08 is the newest RAW converter within OS X and is used by iphoto , Aperture and other applications. there are issues with Nikon cameras. You have to delet tho files and go back and install 4.07 as outlined here
    Solution
Delete or restore from Time Machine
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle
    Download
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1666
    Reinstall 4.07. Finished.

Sorry, I don't understand this - you don't want Adobe [Reader] not to open when doing what?  On what operating system?

  • Can I rebuild iPhoto library by importing masters and originals?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11 and subsequently lost most of the photos in my library, going through the same disastrous experience as many others posting here. All of the recommended methods of rebuilding the library have failed. At this point I'd simply like to rebuild my library by importing masters and originals from the Time Machine backup. I don't care about losing edits to photos; I basically want to start from scratch. Two questions: First, will this work? Second, will the photos still have their metadata (date, geolocation if available) when I import them?

I have to admit that I haven't yet tried iPhoto Library Manager. I'm fairly certain the files are gone from my hard drive; my disk usage shows that 90GB has been freed up since my photos and videos were lost. Also, after multiple attempts to remedy the situation through iPhoto itself, I'd rather just take control myself.
Oh, that raises another question: Will videos also be imported successfully via the method I asked about?

  • Both iPhoto and Preview left 1 cm out my 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) at the bottom

    Hi,
I test twice (printing) and both iPhoto and Preview left 1 cm out my 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) at the bottom of the photo paper. I'm using 10.5.6 and a HP Deskjet F380. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First try the basic fix:  close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview.

None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview. When I try to export a file from any of these programs, the app hangs for a few seconds and then does nothing, not even open an export dialogue. Same thing happens when I try to attach a file to an email. Also, maybe related and maybe not, Photoshop will crash after the splash screen. All of these app function properly when using a different User Account.
I've tried deleting my application preferences in my user library and when that didn't work, I deleted my account and then created a new one that used the same user directory, which still didn't fix anything.
I don't really want to make a new user from scratch and have to re-enter license numbers, re-calibrate monitors, recover bookmarks, contancts, etc. etc. if I don't have to, so I would be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks!

  • Aperture regards masters as previews

    Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I opened my existing iPhoto library, which holds 25k pictures, in Aperture (so I did not use the File -> Import option, I simply opened the existing iPhote library).
Out of the 25k photos, roughly 500 of them have a badge with showing a yellow warning sign (I filtered on "File Status" is "Missing").
After some investigation through the Finder, it turns out that for these 500 photos, Aperture is missing the master files. So there is no photo in the My iPhoto Library / Masters but there is a photo in My iPhoto Library / Previews. However, these photos are actually masters, not previews, judging from the pixel size (3008 x 2000, which is the same as the other photos I took with my Nikon D70 at that time).
It looks to me that somehow Aperture regards these photos not as masters, but as previews. I can't find a pattern which of the 500 images are affected by this, it seems to have happened to some random pictures in my library.
Is there an easy way to let Aperture recognise these photos as masters again? I guess one option could be to copy each image to e.g. the desktop and import them again. How do I ensure Aperture links these newly imported photos to the photos regarded as previews?
Would the problem be resolved if I _import_ my iPhoto library into Aperture rather than just open it? What are the differences/benefits of importing an iPhoto library compared to opening an library in iPhoto?
    Thanks,
    Ivo

    Hi Frank,
    Aperture 3.4.5
    iPhoto 9.4.3
Yes, I could try to import the complete library as a new Aperture library but I guess this would create a library file at least equal in size of the existing library, i.e. 75 Gb. Are there any benefits of doing so? Will all the projects, keywords and albums be maintained? Will it make browsing the library faster?
I have tried to re-import one of the problematic photos to see if Aperture would automatically recognise and regard it as a master - no success.
    Best regards,
    Ivo

  • I imported events from iphoto into aperture and aperture is showing 2 photos for each picture, one original and one edited although none of the photos from iphoto had been edited. Any idea why this has happened and what I need to do to prevent this.

I imported several events for iPhoto into Aperture3 and in Aperture it shows two photos for each photo imported, one original and one edited although none of the photos imported were edited. Why has this happened and what do I need to do to prevent this in future. I have only recently got Aperture and am trying to learn as I go along using the Focal Press guide. Thanks for any help.

A photo that was rotated in iPhoto will also show up as iPhoto edited.
This is not what I found to be the case in a recent experiment using iPhoto11- I did repeat it to be sure.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15586837#15586837
Quickly, what I found is that only the ones I did actual adjustments on brought over two images.  Images that were simply rotated, had "quick fixes" or "Effects" did not bring in two images.  More importantly, among the ones with adjustments that did bring in two images, the ones with the keyword  "iPhoto Edited" appear to be nothing more than iPhoto's 6MB JPEG Previews.  The master was a 25MB RAW image.
I don't know why some users are experiencing doubles on everything, but I recommend caution in deciding which ones to remove or you may find yourself deleting masters and keeping previews.

  • Is it possible to exclude thumbnails and previews from a vault?

I think in Aperture 1.5, vaults did not include any preview or thumbnail files, but only the files containing metadata, adjustments etc. (and the masters, unless referenced only)
Somewhere along the way to 3.0 this changed so now previews and thumbnails are backed up each time you update your vault.
    This has two BIG drawbacks:
    - the vault becomes much larger than necessary (I always generate large previews)
    - the update process takes much longer as more files need to be copied.
On the other hand, I do not see any tangible benefit of including the extra files - provided I back up both masters and the adjustments, I should be able to regenerate thumbnails and previews after a restore following, say, a fatal hard drive error.
(If I chose to delete all previews and thumbnails prior to creating a vault, I assume that the vault would be significantly smaller, without losing any information that cannot be recreated by  'generate thumbnail/preview')
    Is my understanding correct?
If so, is there a way around it?
If not, can we please have this option in Aperture 3.5 or 4.0?
    Thank you!

Hi Matt.  You raise an interesting point.  What you say makes sense to me.
My general response is:  external drives are cheap.  Buy what you need and don't spend any time trying to "save" disk space.  IME, the administrative overhead is far more costly than the upfront equipment costs.
Here are some specific answers (as I understand how Apeture uses Vaults).
There is no way to exclude Previews from Vaults.  Each Vault includes all extant Previews.
Each Vault is a differential back-up.  Updating the Vault should update only those files that have been added, changed, or deleted.  Unchanged files -- including Previews -- are not backed up anew each time you update a Vault.  The amount of time it takes to update a Vault will vary based on the number of changes made, and should have nothing to do with the size of the Library or the number of files in it.
You can test your hypothesis.  Delete all your Previews, and create a new Vault.  Let us know what you find out.
Suggestions for enhancements should be made directly to Apple via "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".  The forum is -- officially -- strictly for user-to-user interaction.

  • Slideshow Video doesn't play in iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks 10.9

I have just upgraded to iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks 10.9
(from Snow Leopard, and iPhoto '09).
I am trying to do an iPhoto Slideshow.
I chose one of the themes, pick a music, and start "Preview".
When the slideshow gets to a video clip, the screen goes black, while the music continues to play.
In my old setup,  I was able to see the video clips in the slideshow during "preview" or "play".
    Any advice?  Thank you!
I am trying to organize holiday photos/videos into slideshows that can be easily viewed by family.

I re-installed Mavericks, and this video/slideshow problem went away!

  • IPhoto: strange behaviour with preview thumbnails

Is there a simple way in iPhoto 8 to rebuild the thumbnail database?
I recently noticed a strange behaviour iPhoto 8 has with previews: In some of my event categories, iPhoto does not display the correct preview thumbnail of the picture, but a preview thumbnail of another event. When I click on the thumbnail, it reloads the appropriate preview and it does not happen again - with that picture. Also, if I double click an event to open it, the small thumbnail of the event's key photo that is to be displayed in the title bar (next to the All Events button) is not always correct.
    Thank you for your help!
    Stefan

I have similar problems (lately) with iPhoto 6.0.6 -- thumbnails do not equal the images they 'thumbnail' of.
Sometimes when it opens, it (recently) asked me to rebuild the thumbnails, but not always.
Can I force a thumbnail rebuild using the command you gave - Apple-option while opening iPhoto? In iPhoto 6.0.6 this primarily forces a new selection of a library.
