Iphoto Libraries are to large. Next step.

Weighing my options, trying to reach a final decision on what to do next.
My Iphoto libraries are 350 GB I am ready for new editing tools. I want to have an organized library and when I return to my photos I need to be productive with my time.
I have lots of slide shows to convert; cannot use Iphoto Library Manager
What do I need to manage as my image files double and triple in size each year?
IS there a Database that I should be using for photos or should I consider a web service for these photos, (helpful for storage, back ups) and then work on small libraries as projects?
Does Aperture’s library manager handle and organize these libraries well, and I can remain productive? If so it seems from my online research Aperture is easy to use and convert and begin organizing existing libraries (just need a sanity check).
If not what are other choices.
I am moving on with editing tools my choices are, Aperture, Photoshop$$, or Adobe Light Room.
Need to solve the photo organization, storage, backup and be certain the size of the library or project I am working on does not bog down the tools I choose.
Thanks in advance for our help!

First let me state that what you are considering is an apples to oranges comparison.
Both Aperture and Lightroom are DAM applications where DAM stands for Digital Asset Management. These applications provide a database for the storage of your photos.
Photoshop is not. It is a photographic editor.
Personally I find Aperture to be perfectly fine for all of my photographic needs. I have a library of about 260 GB. I experience no problems with it all.

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • How do I view iPhoto libraries on a PC?

    Hello,
I have several old iPhoto libraries (some as large as 25GB which I backed up). However, I no longer have a mac from which to view them on using iPhoto. How do I view these libraries on a PC?
Is there an easy way to use them with Adobe Bridge or the like?
    Thanks!

    hi cosmoscorbin
if you have a friend who has a mac ( a mac that is compatible with the iphoto versions the photos are in ) it would be easy then to convert them in PC-readable files by ( after selecting the files wanted ) clicking "File", then clicking "Export". You will need to look into many options offered to you there: use a USB flash-memory-stick to "practice" with a few events or albums, that you load on your PC to see the result immediately.  (  Beware taking out the USB stick without "ejecting" it first, on both machines, this happens when we're concentrating on something else than the USB itself  ).
P.S. : you can keep your original organising in "Events" by putting each "Event" in a folder that you would name by the event's name. But, again, best to practice !
P.P.S.:  what is your backup : DVD,  HD, Flash, ?

  • Images Missing From iPhoto Libraries, but Show up in iPhoto

I am using iPhoto 6.05 on an Intel Core 2 Duo.
I transferred my files from my old iMac using the transfer program with my old iMac in target disk mode.
When I look for individual images in the Pictures folder, the names of my iPhoto Libraries are there and the years/months/days are there, but nothing shows up in the folders. Yet, when I open iPhoto, my pictures are there in my Albums.
Any suggestions as to what to do. I have rebuilt my iPhoto library using command + option keys when opening iPhoto.
    Thanks!

Is there a way to change how they are displayed in Finder?
No. And don't try. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
Have you just upgraded from v5 to v6?
Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is laid out:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
People usually want to re-arrange the iPhoto Library Folder because they're afraid they won't be able to find a shot if they need it. There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Aperture not seeing iPhoto Libraries on external drive when trying to do a REFERENCED import.

I am trying to bring all my iPhoto libraries (one for each year) together into one REFERENCED Aperture library.  I have the iPhoto libraries on an external hard drive and want the Aperture Library on my main drive.  Whe I go to the Import window I do see my external hard drive on the list of drives, but the files do not show up.  It shows folders and any readable files in the folders, but not the iPhoto Libraries, which are not in any folders.  I am running out of space on my hard drive, so want to do a referenced import, not a managed one, but I can't seem to get it to work.  I have tried doing the copy drag and drop method (holding command+option and dragging and dropping from finder to Aperture, but it still copies the whole library to the main drive, it does not reference it).  Help, please!

Whe I go to the Import window I do see my external hard drive on the list of drives, but the files do not show up.
Aperture will not show you files in libraries in the import panel.  iPhoto libraries are not imported using the import panel. Importing the files using the import panel would result in importing a mess of thumbnails, previews, and originals, and you would lose your organisation in events and albums and probably  most of your metadata tags.
You import iPhoto Libraries as library:
    File > Import > Library
If the library you are importing is referenced, it will be imported referenced, if it is managed, the images will be imported managed. You can relocate the managed originals to your external volume directly after import using the command "File > Relocate originals"
See: Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries

  • Planning installed, next steps..

I installed Essbase, AAS, Shared Services now Planning and Performance Management Architect..
When I go to login to Planning it says, "No applications are available"
What are the options/next steps for setting up a planning application?
    Thanks,
    jz

    Hi,
You won't see any projects for planning in Shared Services, you can manually create one in shared services and when you create a new planning application you can apply it against that project.
If you are using classic planning your first steps are to create a database/schema for the planning application, create a new datasource in the hyperion config utility.
    Then go to http://<planning machine>:8300/HyperionPlanning/AppWizard.jsp
    Cheers

  • Can I (should I?) delete my iPhoto libraries?

I've converted all my iPhoto libraries to Photos, but the fact that the Photos documentation talks about there being only one physical copy of the photos worries me.
If I delete my iPhoto libraries, are my photos gone? If so, how do I move my photos to the Photos libraries?
Since I will presumably use Photos going forward, why would I want to maintain my iPhoto libraries?
I have not yet moved anything to the Cloud. I want to make sure I understand what's going on with my MacBook first.

If I delete my iPhoto libraries, are my photos gone? If so, how do I move my photos to the Photos libraries?
No, to delete the photos you'e need to delete from both apps.
Since I will presumably use Photos going forward, why would I want to maintain my iPhoto libraries?
Just in case for a few weeks, in case there is a problem with photos or you discover something you don't like. But if you're sure, no reason.

  • Consolidating iPhoto libraries form different versions of OSX to an external HD.

    Getting a new MacPro.
I  have iPhoto content in Leopard, SnowLeopard and LION.  I want to  transfer all of these files onto one external backup drive so that I can  consolidate all of them into one library.  Where should I look and what  files need to be transferred?
Is there an APP that will assist in consolidating all of these into one iPhoto library in Mavericks?

Where should I look and what  files need to be transferred?
Where - only you know that - look whre the iPhoto libraries are
What - each iPhoto library - there are no files or parts - an iPhoto library is a single entity with no user servicable part in it - simply drag intact iPhoto libraries to the new external hard drive (each will have to have different names or be in different folders so as not to interfear with each other)
Is there an APP that will assist in consolidating all of these into one iPhoto library in Mavericks?
Either Aperture or iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can merge libraries

  • How can I save iPhoto Libraries that are in Trash?

Hello. I have been having troubles with iPhoto which are basically cured at the moment. However during the process I had to drag two iPhoto Libraries to my Trash.
My iPhoto is working fine at the moment, but I do not want to delete those two in the Trash for awhile yet. How can I get them out of Trash into a Folder to save them until I am sure I want to trash them? Can I create a Folder in Documents or Movies and save them there or some other place I can create a Folder to save them. I do not want them on my Desktop as they are quite large (15 and 22GB).
    Thanks for any ideas.

Create a new folder on the desktop. Drag the libraries from the trash into that folder. Then put the folder where ever you want, including your Photos folder.
The desktop and trash are just like any other folder on your Mac. Their contents are stored on your hard drive, so they are taking up the same space where ever you put them. (You have to empty trash to regain the space the contents of trash take up.)

  • IPhoto '08 libraries are messed up....

Yep, it's true. Here's what's happening. When I go into my Home Folder to Pictures and right click on the Pictures folder and Show Package Contents, all my albums are not there. I have 5, all I can access via iPhoto Library Manager and all open correctly. BUT if I click within the Pictures folder on a particular album, it's the same one that opens up each time- whatever one I opened up last in IPLM is the one that opens up when I go into the Pictures folder. That's issue #1. The other issue is the missing album. It's not listed in the Pictures folder. Once again I can access it via IPLM but not within the Pictures folder- the pictures appear in 2 different folders but they are not 'album' folders- they are regular blue folders. The blue folders are the Data and the Originals folders. That is problem #2. Something is messed up. I am using the latest version of iPhoto- 7.1 (347) and ran Repair Permissions after the update. I will appreciate any insight into this issue, Judy

I use iPLM to manage 12 libraries and do it by always launching iPLM first and then selecting the library I want. I leave iPLM in the Dock and use it instead of iPhoto. I find it cuts the time to change libraries by a large factor and the time to decide which library to open the first thing in the day. I never have to go to my Pictures folder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I was trying to do a favor for my gf, and I uninstalled bonjour. What are my next steps with the cloud and ios5

I was trying to do a favor for my gf, and I accidentily on purpose uninstalled bonjour. It has seemed to really screw up iTunes for me.  What are my next steps to get this back to normal? I have downloaded and using the icloud and ios5. I have two iPhones 3gs and our iPad2. And our computer is windows xp(yes it is time for an upgrade)

Try the troubleshooting help here.  http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/
You may need to restore your iPhone.
If it won't restore, try here. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
If nothing helps, you need to contact Verizon for information for an exchange or refund. This is a user to user forum, not Apple.
Apple's policy for a refund or exchange is within 14 days of purchase. Verizon's policy may be different.
Definitely try restoring .. hopefully you won't have to go through the hassle of an exchange.

  • I have multiple iPhoto libraries w/ duplicates in several. How can I consolidate and find the dupes? Some photos are versions of the original.

I have multiple iPhoto libraries w/ duplicates in several. How can I consolidate and find the dupes? Some photos are versions of the original. On my iMac, I also have many folders containing some of the same photos. My computer is used for both personal and business purposes. My libraries should be separated, one for each.

To merge libraries use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  or Aperature
To find duplicates within an iPhoto library use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Photos that are not in an iPhoto library can be imported telling iPhoto not to import duplicates (an imperfect procews) and then IPLM can find the duplicates
As to keeping seperate libraries - only you can do that - IPLM can move photos between libraries for you but only you can know which photos should be in which library

  • HT5129 I have 30+ iPhoto Libraries, so every time I open one, iphoto wants to copy the 3 events I had out there when MobileMe shut down. Those 3 events are saved in the appropriate iPhoto libraries. Wish I had deleted them on MobileMe! How do I turn this

I have 30+ iPhoto Libraries, so every time I open one, iPhoto wants to copy the 3 events I had out there when MobileMe shut down. Those 3 events are already saved in the appropriate iPhoto libraries. Wish I had deleted them on MobileMe! How do I turn this process off?

As Larry mentioned I use a different DAM (digital asset management) appliclation, Media Pro 1. For other possible DAM apps visit  The DAM Forum which is for professional photographers.  There the various apps are discussed along with workflows.  If nothing else you'll get some good information on managing digital "negatives".
Media Pro lets you manage the folder organization of your photos and write metadata, keywords, titles, and other metadata directly back to the files.  No matter what app you go with have a backup plan in place to keep current backups of your source photos on separate hard drives.

  • Iphoto 9.4.2 quitting when pressing info - next steps?

After uploading a batch of new photos, I pressed the info button for one of the photos and iphoto quit unexpectedly. I have 25,000 photos in my iphoto library.
    I tried the following:
    1) Repairing permission and database using the 'first aid' function.
After trying this, the problem was worse ie iphoto now quitting - a second or two after opening.
    2) Created a second iphoto library - that worked fine using iphoto.
    3) Opening my photos Aperture. Also worked fine.
    4) Rebuilding the library using the 'first aid' function - this improved the situation. iphoto no longer quits on opening BUT it is still quitting when I press the info button - so back to square 1!
Ideally I would like to merge my iphoto library with my Aperture library - but don't want to make matters worse by merging a dodgy library with a good one.  I would rather repair the iphoto library first if possible.
I have backed up onto an external drive.
Any suggestions for next steps would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    iPhoto '11, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
