IPhoto library compression
I just deleted an event from iPhoto: deleted the event, deleted the slideshow that contained the images and emptied the trash. I then noticed that the library size was reduced by .9 gig yet, the folder with the original pics was 1.47 gig in size. I quit iPhoto and reopened, quit again and compared the library's file size to a backed up copy, pre-event deletion. The above numbers were right.
I then went to a few images and checked the file sizes. Same results as above, iPhoto's image is about 60% of the size of the original out of the camera (which is already compressed to some extent - Nikon D80 or a Canon G7).
I then went and exported a selection of images at "JPEG Quality Maximum". The exported images were 3% smaller in size than the images in iPhoto (extended photo info).
This obviously suggests iPhoto is taking a fairly aggressive compression approach to everything that it imports.
All of this tells me iPhoto does not keep the original pics and there is no way of getting the least compressed photo out of iPhoto or back to the original which came out of the camera. Fortunately, I use iPhoto for slideshows only and keep all the originals in folders. But for those using iPhoto as their only photo app, this has negative consequences.
Am I missing something here?

It does not - it does a straight bit by bit copy of imported photos

Select a photo and export (file menu ==> export) with JPEG quality set to maximum and file size set to original

Yes - see above

Just moved my iphoto 06 library to a work mac which has iphoto 08. I notice it has an option to compress the library but I can't find any info on this. Is it just if you are archiving and not using or can you compress a library you are currently using?
ThanksWhere are you seeing this option? Because I cannot see any such option on my iPhoto 08. The only thing I can find that comes close is an option in the Finder to compress the currently selected file or folder. If this is what you're referring to (and it could be, if you have the iPhoto Library selected and go File -> Compress...) it's simply a built-in facility to zip files or folders.

Can't restore iphoto library from time machine
I'm running iphoto 8 on 10.6.8. The iphoto library disappeared and I've tried numerous ways to restore it. Rebuilding the library didn't work. Neither did library manager's rebuild function. When I attempt to restore directly from time machine I get a permissions error. I tried to work around that by creating a disk image and restoring the time machine back up to that. It copies some of it, but then gives me an error 36.
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)"
It did transfer enough data before quitting so that I could get my low res photos from the "data" folder, but I can not get to the originals folder.
Is there any other way to get that folder out of the time machine back up directly. The library on time machine shows over 20 gigs of data, but I can't seem to get to it.
I did upgrade to snow leopard a few months ago.
I appreciate any and all help. :-) shaeriThanks so much Terence. I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm. I really appreciate it. -
How to move a large iphoto library from one external drive to another
Hi all (my first ever post to a forum!)
I have a large iphoto library (379 GB) on an external drive (Lacie 1TB w/usb 2.0) and want to move it to a another ethernet connected external drive (LaCie Network Space 2) so I will be able to access it from other computers.
Moving it with drag and drop or copying is calculated to take 66 day's!
Wander if that could be explaned with the fact that these are around 70.000 individual pictures/files, and if it could be speed up by first compressing the library.
Wander if anyone can shere their experience on that? (what software to use or?)
I have an 21.5 inch, mid 2010 iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 with 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3).
I also have the new Macbook Air (1.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz - with 3MB shared L3 cache).iPhoto needs to be connected to the computer you are using it from via a sired connectin both for speed and also for data reliability
THe copy estimate is often way off - let it run and see - it will probably drop a lot quickly
Compressing would not help (assuming you shoot JPEG) since the JPEGs in the library are alread highly compressed

I have a few hundred duplicates in my iPhoto library, but the file sizes are different. So one is 1.3mb and one is 567kb. I want to delete the smaller ones, but short of comparing each duplicate, is there a way to do this? I've been looking at Duplicate Annhilator but I don't think it can do it.
Thanks!I just ran a test with iPhoto Library Manager, Duplicate Annihilator, iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner, Duplifinder and Photodedupo. I imported a folder of 5 photos into a test library 3 times, allowing iPhoto to import duplicates. I then ran the 5 photos thru resizer to reduce their jpeg compression but all other aspects of the file the same.
None of the duplicate removal apps found set that was reduced in the file resizer. That's probably due to the fact that the file creation date was being used as a criteria and the resized photo would have a different file creation date even though the Image Capture date was the same.
They all found the 3 regular duplicates and some of them would mark two and leave the 3rd unmarked. iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner can sort the found duplicates by file size but if the file was edited to get the reduced file size it might not be found as it would have a different file creation/modification date.
iPhoto Library Manage was able to find all duplicates and mark them as such if the file names were the same the the filename option was selected. Otherwise it also missed the modified, resized version. It allowed one to select the one photo to save before going to work on the library.
So if a photo has been reduced in image quality or pixel size it will not be considered a duplicate.

How do I clean-up iPhoto library in iMovie '08 and make my new ones appear?
I'm a graphic designer and I use Adobe Bridge to add metadata (keywords) to my pictures so they're searchable on the Internet - not just iPhoto (and iLife?) and after transferring all the image files from iPhoto onto my Time Capsule (external hard-drive) and deleting the Photo Albums from iPhoto, I created a new Album to import still frames/images to use in my new iMovie project. I cleaned out (emptied) my iPhoto trash to help free-up space on my hard-drive, too.
The problem I'm having is that my iPhoto library as viewed from iMovie - still shows all the old photo albums that I've already deleted and the new .PNG I imported doesn't appear; however, the old .JPG files I once had still appear with exclamation marks as the thumbnail images and I can't select or delete them. When I right-click on the iPhoto photo albums library within iMovie, I only get the option to open in iPhoto. I imagine there is some back door manipulation required to fix this. The iMovie and iPhoto software came pre-installed in my computer and I'm not so sure that re-formatting my computer with the start-up disc is the safe or correct answer.
I've been researching the iMovie forum to see if there is a file I should be able to access to fix a Cache file somewhere; however, I couldn't find any .xml files, cache files, or anything anywhere yet. Thanks in advance to anyone willing and able to share some knowledge. I look forward to resolving this troubling experience. My final goal is to use the .PNG file (which contains transparent data, unlike .JPG files which fill transparent data with white pixels) as a frame image if not as a floating graphic (i.e. picture-in-picture).Sean in the iMovie technical support area (thanks to my lovely Apple Care plan purchase) answered my question about how to delete the iPhoto library, which I no longer use (because I use Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS3 to browse my photos and update their Metadata to make the images searchable not only on my computer, but others who don't have iPhoto, or iLife as well; even PC users and Internet search engines - when the images are uploaded as-is - without compression and changes that occur when uploaded to image hosts such as Photobucket.com, etc.):
Go to: *Finder >* (click on) *Pictures >* (and on the right, see iPhoto Library, Aperture, etc.? Select those files and...) *Move to Trash*
Now when you look at the Photos Browser in iMovie (⌘2) the folder, files, blank thumbnails and junk are (thankfully) gone!
As for using images located elsewhere for use in iMovie - I just have to locate them via the Finder, then select the file, then drag-and-drop the image for immediate placement into the part of My Project where I want to use the image and repeat this method for each incidence I want the graphic to appear.
Unfortunately, I must upgrade to iMovie '09 if I want to be able to take advantage of the Picture-in-Picture feature, which would enable me to place a logo or image graphic in a video project while other parts of the production are playing, but I can still use the title feature to embed text information such as a business name and phone number or (website) URL pertaining to the project as a surrogate stamp, watermark, or creative signature, but no other graphic image files may be used here. -
HT1338 iPhoto library won't open.
My iPhoto library was working fine until recently when I tried to import photos from my camera to my library. Now when I try to open iPhoto, I get a spinning wheel and none of the pictures in my library show up. I have the latest software update, and have tried restarting my computer and compressing the contents of the library (which I cannot see) into a zip. Please help! Thank you!
You can right click and "Show package contents" on the iPhoto Library and open your Originals folder and remove problematic files, or copy and remove the good ones.
Perhaps both or some of each in your case.
You don't want to zip up the iPhoto Library, perhaps it made a copy when it zipped, it needs to stay unzipped.
Zipping is compression for transfer use mostly. -
IPhoto Library Won't Load After 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC)
After updating to 10.4.10 on a G4 desktop the iPhoto library will no longer load. Tried several times to rebuilt it and program quits unexpectedly just as it finishes rebuild. Ran repair disk permissions from HD and Repair Disk from DVD and re-installed 10.4.9, but problem remains. Had some trouble importing the last few photos (downloaded from an e-mail) before this problem occured (possible it is not related to 10.4.10 upgrade?). Been everywhere looking for a way to solve this, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
Hi, redwood. You had trouble with the emailed photos because they had been compressed by the sender using Stuffit (that's what the .sit suffix indicates), and you didn't unStuff them before importing them. I'm surprised that iPhoto was even willing to try to import them. It certainly couldn't have displayed them in that form.
If you then trashed them and emptied the trash *within iPhoto*, I'm not sure why they should have continued to cause you trouble — but since I don't understand how they could have been imported in the first place, I wouldn't really expect to understand all the consequences.
If, instead, you trashed them from within the iPhoto Library folder using the Finder, doing so corrupted your iPhoto Library database and necessitated a rebuild — which ordinarily produces better results than it apparently did in your case. Perhaps there were files left in the iPhoto Library folder that still referenced the files you deleted, and iPhoto didn't know how to handle references to files that weren't in an image format.
Setting aside what we don't understand and may never understand, I suggest that you leave your present defective iPhoto Library just as it is for the moment, and try to determine whether the backup copy is usable. (Good for you for having one, by the way!):
Connect or insert the drive or disc that contains the backup iPhoto Library folder. Start iPhoto while holding down the Option key, and continue to hold it down until you're asked whether you want to Create or Find a library. Choose Find, then navigate to the backup Library folder and click Open. If it opens normally and everything seems to be in order in it, simply replace the bad library folder inside your account's Pictures folder with a copy of the backup library folder, and you're back in business. It if doesn't open correctly, post back with details of what happened.
Note that the only way to make a successful backup copy of your iPhoto Library is to copy the entire iPhoto Library folder *as a unit* to another storage volume (a volume is a hard drive, a partition on a hard drive that contains more than one partition, a CD, DVD, flash drive, or other storage medium). If your backup wasn't made this way, it won't be usable.
EDIT: Well, I was busily churning out my long reply while you were solving the problem. I'm glad it turned out well. -
I have tried everything I know to retrieve the iPhoto Library app. I detest this new Photo app, which obviously wasn't designed with photographers in mind. I desperately need help in retrieving the old app and have not been able to do it so far. I have gone to my app folder and tried to update my iPhoto Library. I have gone to my trash and brought it over to my desktop and still cannot use it. Please help!
Try this fix discovered by User photosb189:
From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old), unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto. -
IPhoto library too small?
Trying to transfer iPhoto library 09. To external harddrive. The file transfer goes fast and the size is 237mb. That seems MUCH too small for the amount of photos that I have. How do I make sure everything is ok?
2 years ago I got a MacBook Air with newer iPhoto which took a copy of iPhoto library converted it to lion and that file is 65 gb. Since then there has been more added to the old iPhoto 09 library so I don't understand how it can be less than 1gb even with compression.
Please helpWhat size is the iPhoto library on your main disk before transfering it? Yes 237 MB is very small - but with nno actually information about what you are doing (lots of information about things that have no bering on the question) it is impossibel to tell
the correct way to transfer an iPhoto library is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

"Optimising Photos for iPod" Does this affect photos in iPhoto Library?
Hi,
I have a question regarding syncing pictures which are stored in my iPhoto library with my iPod touch.
I notice when I sync photos I get a message that iTunes is "optimising photos for iPod"
1) Does this mean that 'quality' of the photos is reduced/compressed?
If so, does this mean that any picture downloaded onto my iPod, it's quality is reduced within iPhoto app.
or
2) The original quality of the photo is unchanged within iPhoto and it's only the synced photo which is 'optimised' for the sync process?
I hope this makes sense!
Thanks...........Hi Dave,
Don't worry, iTunes only mangles, er I mean "optimises" the photos on your Touch.
The originals will stay intact on your computer, if you look in the photo file you sync with there should be another file called "iPod Photo Cache" where the marmalised ones are stored.
Dud.
ps. any photo, regardless of size gets butchered to a max of 640x480 and file size approx 650kb.

Backing up iPhoto library to SOS Online storage
The backup is suggesting I compress and zip my Iphoto library and back that file up. I see that is an option, but I am not sure what to do next. I think move the file to the desktop and then move it back to the photos folder afterward? Do I have to unzip the folder?
Nope
The rule is that the iPhoto library must always be on a volume formated Mac OS extended (journaled) - zipping it may or may not allow it to be stored on an incorrectly formatted volume
I would not do it
If you do your first action should be to do a test restore and see if it works\
I assume you are zipping a copy of the iPhoto library - you can not use a zipped library with iPhoto
I use local hard drives for backup - I am not aware of anyone successfully using an online backup - but someday there will be a first time

Elements 10 Editor error on File / Open iPhoto Library folder
We have Installed PSE 10 and properly associated iPhoto to use PSE Editor. When we open iPhoto, we can click a photo, click on Edit.. and the photo appears for editing within the PSE Editor. This part is GOOD.
Our problem is that we don't use iPhoto, and would prefer to open the Editor directly, click on FILE / OPEN... go to our iPhoto library, double click.. and select photos from that pathway. Instead, the iPhoto folder does NOT open.. and we get the error:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error."
We have reinstalled PSE twice, and the same problem occurs.
Are we doing something wrong, or does PSE Editor NOT work to open the iPhoto folder?
Thank you for your help! When you have imported you images into iPhoto, they are placed in your Library. The library is a special type of folder, similar to a ZIP or other compressed format. Photoshop Elements is unable to open this compressed directory, which is why you get the error. Basically, you need to get your images out of iPhoto and into a normal folder. You can do this by pulling your iPhoto library into the Organizer (File > Get Photos and Vidoes > From iPhoto).

494 com.apple.iPhotoI posted this on another thread, but it appears the workaround should work in your case also. Try this...
Unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old). -
Difference between archive or copy iphoto library
When you control click on the iphoto library you get the choice to "create archive of 'iphoto library' or copy 'iphoto library". How are these different and when would you use one over the other?
Creating an archive of it produces a compressed zip file. Copying it places a pointer to it in the clipboard; if you then paste into a new Finder window, an additional uncompressed copy of the library is created at that location. Pasting to a location which doesn't accept files will only produce the folder's name.
