IPhoto Library content
With multiple iPhoto '09 Libraries, can you have the same picture(s) in more than one library without duplicating them? i.e. Does the Library just contain alaises/thumbnails and call up the original from elsewhere? ( I don't want loads more copies/duplicates clogging up my 24" iMac
I’m somwhat puzzled as to why you would want the same photos in different Libraries.
However you can run libraries in Referenced Mode but I strongly caution against this.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

My iphoto library content disappeared
when i opened i-photo, it told me that the library had to be rebuilt. the library is very large
when it was rebuilding the thumbnails, it did not respond anymore and i had to force quite
now when i open i-photo, my library is emptywhen it was rebuilding the thumbnails, it did not respond anymore and i had to force quite
Rebulding thumbnails can take a long time and eat up the CPU'S resources to where iPhoto can't do anything till it's done. How long did you wait before force quitting?
You best bet would be to restore a backup copy of the library created just prior to this happening.
Otherwise, do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database. -
IPhoto 6 not reading old iPhoto library - Old Toad?
Hi folks, been reading the discussions but couldn't see this one answered, hope you can help!
I recently updated to OS 10.4.9 (from 10.3.9), taking the opportunity to format my Powerbook and install new versions of my applications. Naturally I backed up my user folder on an external HD.
After installing iPhoto 6.0.6, I dragged the contents of my Pictures folder back, including my iPhoto library from the old version of iPhoto (was it 4 or 5? - either way I believe the new directory structure differs, and may be part of my problem).
When I open iPhoto, there are no photos. I suspect they're there somewhere, but there's no Originals folder to be seen.
The contents of the folder are listed below FYI - and there are 'no entry' signs over all the year folders & the Albums folder (maybe insignificant but new to me as a X.4.9 newbie).
I've tried directing iPhoto to the old library but sense it needs to be imported or converted somehow...? Has it put a new library there next to the old one?
What makes me nervous is the external HD has failed and I've lost the backup... that's why I haven't tried any intervention yet.
Please help! I hope I haven't lost all my memories!

Do you have an original backup copy of your iPHoto Library folder? One that you haven't tried to update at all?
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Updating old(er) iPhoto library without system crashing
Hello, my old iMac was recently stolen and I would now like to recover my iPhoto library.
So I've imported it from Time Machine.
But when I try to open iPhoto, the systems needs to update the old library and then crashes.
Any ideas?Hi,
Thanks for your answer!
Hereafter you will find the messages from the system log.
I found the same messages several times, so I didn't copy-paste them each time.
I hope this is what you need to solve the issue.
Thanks in advance!

Help! I have 2 problems related to iPhoto:
1: I accidentally ran iPhoto Library Upgrader on my Picture folder and now I have to right click on it to "show contents" instead of double clicking on it and looking at it in Finder. I cannot figure out how to fix my Pictures Folder so that I can click on it and view it in Finder, when I double click on it Terminal opens up with this message "Pictures - Bash 80x24" and

It will not let me replace or delete the folder... I got to my files and backed them up, but trying to avoid reinstalling my OS.
2: When I try to Upgrade my Library.iPhoto file so I can open it in iPhoto it says I need to finish by opening in iPhoto, but then when I do, it tells me it first needs to be upgraded in the iPhoto Library Upgrader... Vicious circle. Please, help! Just trying to recover about 3 years worth of photos...Hi! Thanks for responding!
I have iPhoto 9.5.1, I am on OS X Version 10.9.5 on a MacBook Pro with 2.66 GHz
My current "iPhoto Library" file is OK (I can open it with iPhoto), however I cannot access the old one from iPhoto 6 titled Library.iPhoto
I tried right clicking and choosing the application, it did not work.
"exactly how did you "I got to my files and backed them up"" - I showed the contents of my Pictures folder, and it opened up the folders in Finder and I copied them to an external hard drive. In my Picture folder I have several folders of Photos plus the iPhoto Library files (old & current)
I do have old back ups, but they are from April, and I recently imported 5 months of photos from my iPhone, so the iPhoto Library I copied after showing contents is the one I need. -
Moving content from iPhoto library to external hard drive
I recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive. I've just updated some albums and created new albums. What's the easiest way to move this new content to my hard drive without having to copy and move the entire iPhoto library again?

IPhoto Library appears to have no content?
when trying to print a photo on my Canon PIXMA MP620, using Easy Photo-Print EX, the select images window appears.
In it, there is a file listing, beginning with my HD, then below and indented is (among others) my Users folder, and inside that my Pictures folder.
However, it doesn't appear any pix are inside that folder even though I've imported many into iPhoto, and can see them in iPhoto.
When accessing via a Finder window, the same thing happens - clicking through to Users, my folder, and then Pictures... only iPhoto Library appears. But again with no content inside. IF I right-click on that iPhoto Libray and select Show Package Contents, a new window opens titled iPhoto Library. In it, there's the list of multiple folders, including "modified" and "originals"
Should I not be able to simply access these files by (traditional) click on the iPhoto Library?
Can I adjust a setting so that my one-click printing will work?in the select images window look in the lower left under Media ==> photos ==> iPhoto

Getting this error on iPhoto open it refers to iLifeSlideShow and iPhoto quits - or doesn't open.
Dyld Error Message:
Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iLifeSlideshow.framework/Versions/A/iLifeSlid eshow
Referenced from: /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/MacOS/iPhoto
Reason: image not foundYes, some perople have seen this. Options:
1. Try reinstall iPhoto. (see below)
2. If you have access to another Mac with the same version of the OS, try and copy that framework over
3. Reinstall the OS.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

When I try to view my iPhoto backup I get the error: "The folder “iPhoto Library backup 1/2007” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
I tried opening the Get Info box and changing my access from no access to read only, authenticated with current and old admin passwords but access does not change.
Help!In that case reset the ownership and permissions on the iPhoto Library as follows:
1 - download and launch BatChmod .
2 - drag the iPhoto Library into the BatChmod window.
3 - set the ownership and privileges settings to that shown in this screenshot:
4 - launch iPhoto and see if that helped.

Backing up iPhoto Library (or its contents) to DVD
I currently use Time Machine to backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive. However, I would also like to back up the library itself, or at least its contents, to DVD. Does iPhoto have a built-in backup to disc utility like iTunes does? If not, can you suggest a good method/app for backing up the library to disc? My iPhoto Library is around 8 GB, so it won't fit on a single DVD. I do have Toast, although it's an old version (Version 8, I believe). Could I use that?
Does iPhoto have a built-in backup to disc utility like iTunes does?
No.
My iPhoto Library is around 8 GB, so it won't fit on a single DVD.
If you have a drive capable of writing to dual layer double sided DVDs, the library will fit. Other options include control-clicking the iPhoto Library item in the Finder and compressing or archiving it, or showing its contents in the Finder, splitting that over multiple DVDs, and fully reassembling it before attempting to access it from iPhoto.

Somehow I created a live copy of "Finder" on my desktop. It is titled "iPhoto Library", and has live copies of all of my files/photos/music. How can I make it go away without deleting all of my content?
Either you moved or copied your iPhoto library folder to the Desktop.
Quit iPhoto. Rename the folder on your Desktop to something else, such as "foo." Launch iPhoto. If you still see all your photos, you can delete "foo."
If you don't see your photos, quit iPhoto, rename "foo" to "iPhoto Library," and put it in your Pictures folder. Try iPhoto again. -
I have tried the option + command button while opening iPhoto but this has not helped.
Your next step would be tp try rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager and its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
As per Apple instructions, I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive so that I could free up space on my full iMac. However, I was not told the last step in the process -- How do I get the iPhoto library off my iMac so I free up that memory?
And after deleting the old Library, you should start up iPhoto while holding down the Option key in order to force iPhoto to let you select your iPhoto Library that is on your external hard drive. If you start up iPhoto the usual way, it will just create a new, blank iPhoto Library in your /users/yourusername/Pictures folder on your iMac's internal hard drive.

Iphoto 6.6 suddenly cannot see my photo library content
I have about 1000 images in my library. One day it asked me to update the cache or something like that. I've done this many times before and it was never a problem, however, this time it came back wtih only 73 files in the library.
When I check my hard drive and go to Iphoto library, they're all in there still and tells me I have used up about 6gigs of space, so i know I haven't lost my images.
I tried to reimport them back but of course it won't allow me to take from the library to put back in the library - it knows they're not lost, but they won't come up as viewable in my application.
AnY tips?Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
