IPhoto library conversion to Mavericks problematic

Updated to Mavericks from 10.7. Was using iPhoto (I think 8) on the older 10.7 system. After upgrade to Mavericks iPhoto automated database upgrade gets stuck (spinning beach ball at the end of 'Upgrading iPhoto database' stage). My only option has been to force quit this attempt. Have had two Live Chats with Apple about this with no success. I've also checked several of the discussion boards here. Any suggestions for those of us that jumped from an older version of iPhoto to the newer one in Mavericks? Thanks.

What version of iPhoto are you current using? If it's iPhoto 8 (09) there are problems with it and Mavericks. If that's what you're using I would upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 via the App Store which will require a purchase.
If you're using iPhoto 9.5.1 and getting that message give this a try:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

IPhoto Library Conversion Problem - and solutions

I installed iLife '06 today. Then I opened iPhoto and it needed to convert my old Library. After 15 minutes it gave me the "Unable to upgrade this photo library because the current user does not have access. if possible repair permissions ...". Sigh.
Well, this forum had a similar posting and the answer appeared to be to use the "sudo chflags -R nouchg [your library folder path]" command in Terminal to clear all "locks" on all files. I did that but still got the same error message.
My answer turned out to be to go to the Library folder, "Get Info" on that folder, ensure I had "Read/Write" permissions as the owner/group/user, then click on the "Details" part and click on the "Apply to all enclosed items". That did the trick for me.
Apple - if you see this, please change the "conversion" routine to identify these problems before spending time on the conversion process only to fail at the end! The suggestion in the error message to "repair permissions" is useful but not comprehensive enough either.

IPhoto library gone after Mavericks upgrade?

After upgrading, iPhoto tried to index but I don't believe it happened. Then the library disappeared. I retrieved the library from Time Machine but it won't load ie, no pictures! Next? On an iMac, 2008, 2.9 mghz dual core Intel.

Rebuilt, repaired etc library , no luck. Problem might be download of iPhoto. It shows the new iPhoto 9.5 on About iPhoto, however in Apps, it shows no record of download to 9.5 My other Mac, a MacBook has 9.5, works great and shows download on App. with a date. I'm guessing it never downloaded (fully) but shows it did on my iMac. Since I can't re-download, guess I'll call Apple :-(

If I context click the folder, then select "show package contents", I can see the first set of folders, but most have no contents. Mostly text documents and a few other are the only ones still there. However my iPhoto library still seems to be residing in the usual "photos" folder, too. How can I get a handle on this? Totally boggled.

Trouble opening iPhoto library in Aperture that has been transferred to an external hard drive.

I am having trouble opening my iPhoto library in Aperture now that it has been transferred to an external hard drive.
Versions being used:
MacBook Pro 13-inch mid-2010
OS X v. 10.9.1 Mavericks
Aperture v. 3.5.1
iPhoto v. 9.5.1
Order of events: got MacBook > took pictures > created an iPhoto library > upgraded to Mountain Loin > added more photos to iPhoto library > upgraded to Mavericks > purchased and downloaded Aperture > copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
When attempting to switch to this iPhoto library while using Aperture an error stating, “Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.” iPhoto can access this iPhoto library with no problem. What is missing? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Aperture 3.5.1 is checking for file system compatibility, iPhoto not always.

Check the filesystem on your WD drive. Did you remember to format the drive for MacOS, before you copied the library there? It needs to be formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) to be used with any photo library. iPhoto may be able to open the library, if the filesystem is not supported, but you are risking data loss.
You can reformat the drive with Disk Utility, if the file system is wrong (after backing up your iPhoto library to a different drive). See:

You see the File System in the Finder's "File > Get Info" panel, when you select the drive in the Finder and use "File > Get Info" from the main menu bar or press cmd-I.

Will iphoto 9.5 for Mavericks be compatible to 9.4.3 for Mountain lion?

I have an Macbook air early 2008, which will just not be comaptible with mavericks (which i do absolutely not understand! please apple - let user try themselves, if it runs!) - if I now update my imac to mavericks I must use 9.5 iphoto - can I use the libs from that with my macbooc air running iphoto 9.4.3 on mountain lion?

If you haven't already figured it out -- the answer is no. I already made this mistake ... I can now only open my iPhoto library on my "Mavericks" MacBook. I'm non-plussed that an incremental app upgrade comes with yet another new database/library that isn't backward compatible.

I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding." Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

All of my pictures from my iPhoto library are gone after upgrading to Mavericks

I just upgraded to Os X Mavericks and now all of my pictures are gone from my iPhoto library, and of course I am unable to access this version of iPhoto on OS X Mavericks.
I tried to find them using a different application or in Finder, and in both cases "iPhoto Library" is in Gray and no contents are available. My system memory doesn't seem to be reflecting the number of photos I have either.
If I go back to my old operating system will it work? If not, I have lost all my pictures since February of 2011. I have been crying nonstop for an hour trying to figure out what to do.

Open the App Store and upgrade iPhoto to the Mavericks version. Installing OS X does not do anything to your iPhoto Library.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded.

What is the best sequence of upgrading: SSD, OSX Mavericks, iPhoto Library?

Working on breathing new life into / upgrading my wife's mid-2009 MacBook Pro (Macbook Pro 5,5 - Core 2 Duo, 2.26 GHz, 13"). Currently running OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
So far: I have upgraded the RAM to 8 GB from 2 GB, and replaced the battery which recently reached the end of its life.
Next up: SSD upgrade and possibly OSX upgrade to Mavericks.
My questions:
(a) What is my best upgrade path (order/sequence), given the few things I want to with this machine still?
(b) Are my plans and reasoning below sound?
1.Upgrade the 120 GB hard disk to a 240 GB SSD. I have a SanDisk Extreme II 240 GB (although I know this MBP won't fully utilize the SATA III, I got a good deal on it and plan to use it as an add-on drive somewhere when/if this MBP logic board fails eventually), and a USB to SATA adapter for prep work.
Plan: Attach the SSD via USB adaptor, initialize and partition with Disk Utility (Journaled, GUID Partition Map so it's bootable), clone existing hard disk using Super Duper or CCC (recommendations welcome--I'm on a budget ). Set TRIM enabler, and other recommendations per Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive
Reasoning: Doing this SSD upgrade first will give me more free space for updates/changes I plan under #2 and #3 below. (For example, current drive has 11 GB free, which is not much room to try and upgrade to Mavericks now before swapping out for SSD.) Additionally, Mavericks will perform much better on the SSD, per other threads I've read with similar MBPs.
2. Upgrade OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to Mavericks.
This is where some of my Mac knowledge is lacking: Is it best to upgrade here (what I've read so far indicates it's pretty seamless), or to install Mavericks freshly on the SSD and then use Migration Assistant to import from the old hard disk? I hesitate to do the latter, since this Mac still has some messes from a previous migration (see #3).
Coming from a Windows background, I have my biases, but I don't know if the jury's still out on performance differences between fresh Mavericks installs versus upgrades--any light to be shed here?
3. Fix iPhoto '09 Library and Consider Upgrading to iPhoto '11. Through reading on the great forums here I have concluded that my wife's photo collection currently exists in a weird place - 68 GB under /Previous Systems/<date of MBP upgrade from Macbook>/Users/<username>/Pictures/iPhoto Library. This seems to be left over from when she copied her iPhoto Library from her old Macbook, before this MBP. (Before I sat down to write this post, I had noticed there was an iPhoto Library (much smaller size, just a few GBs) in the normal place, under /Users/<username>/Pictures/iPhoto Library/ -- but now I don't see it, so maybe I goofed up and either lost that or imported it into the above library. Either way, that was going to be one of my questions!)
Should I move this "Previous Systems" iPhoto Library to a more normal place?
If I do again find extraneous photos or libraries outside of it, how best should I bring them back into one -- or a better question might be, how do I ensure THIS becomes the primary iPhoto Library going forward? (links to threads also appreciated -- I have come up short)
If this machine is now on Mavericks, is it a best practice to also purchase iPhoto '11? Eventually, our next Mac will come with it so it may be worthwhile eventually upgrading (I don't know if it is urgent, though).
Overall, does this process make sense? Any glaring gaps? Thank you for your time and wisdom!

Thanks Melophage. I've been looking into my options, together with the advice you gave. It seems like I can salvage quite a bit of data after a fresh install if I follow the steps here - OS X: Manually migrating data from another Mac. However, applications are my (only) concern -- for my iLife suite apps (which as I mentioned, are old -- '09 editions) how can I restore those after installing Mavericks fresh? Can I just plug in the original Snow Leopard disc that says applications on it, to install? Or would they show up in Mac App Store (I think not since they are so old and I haven't purchased '11 with this account yet).
My wife's computer also has some third party apps which would be a pain to reinstall but not end of the world, I suppose. Another route of migrating and keeping these (but still doing a fresh OS install) might possibly be according to OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks, which is really designed for multiple computer copying. But with the SSD external, could I install Mavericks and then take a Time Machine backup of my internal (original) HDD, including those apps, and then follow these steps to import them into the Mavericks install on the SSD, once I booted into it? Does that make sense?
After some further reading on the subject, I found a lot of difference of opinion (especially on some MacRumor threads) about whether to install fresh OS X or upgrade, but I guess if the install ends up cleaner it could be worth it to install a fresh copy.
Any comments on the above approaches, or thoughts from others here? Thanks again for your help.

I was able to get it fixed. I had received some responses and they had me
recreate the library I believe. It's been a while so I cant remember
exactly what I did. I have since upgraded to the latest i photo version and
have had no problems with it.

I want to keep all the folders, albums, keywords, etc. Now, several photos are missing and showing an exclamation mark, however the folders they were in are still there. I tried rebuilding the database and had no luck with that. I still have the Time Machine back up, but no idea where the missing photos are if they aren't in the iPhoto Library file. Most of the photos were imported from an iPhone and iPad, so not sure if there is a default location they would save to other than iPhoto Library? Any help is greatly appreciated.

launch iPhoto wile holding down the option key and select the original library - when you create a new library of course it is empty
And you seriously need to backup your iPhoto library and purchase and install iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store and download and run the iPhoto library upgraded \then run the new iPhoto - 7.1.5 is not fully compatible with Mavericks

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

Restore iPhoto library from Mavericks to Yosemite, via Time Machine

Hi people.
I´m experiencing an unexpected problem: I can´t find the iPhoto library on Time Machine. The backup on TM is from an older MBP (Mavericks) and I´m trying to restore iPhoto on my new MBP (Yosemite)
I´ve found the library on my new Mac, then entered Time Machine but I cant scroll back in time to find the older library and restore it. I performed a complete restore from the TM first and everything looks fine. All my settings and apps are here but the old iPhoto isn´t available. I didn´t move the library on the old Mac.
Any tips?

What happens, if you go back in time, a year or so? Will your iPhoto Library then appear?
Try to retrieve the iPhoto Preferences file from your backup.
It is stored in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist , the Library folder in your home folder.
Restore this file to your Desktop and try to open it with Xcode, if you have it installed or download Prefsetter (http://www.nightproductions.net).
Search with Prefsetter for "RecentRootDirectories" and click the disclosure triangle.
The items will tell you the locations of the last iPhoto Libraries you opened.

Why is my iPhoto library no longer an option for Screen Saver in Mavericks?

My Screen Saver no longer pulls random photos from my selected iPhoto library. When I went into System Preferences --> Screen Saver I no longer see iPhoto folders as a Screen Saver option. Was a change made with Mavericks? When I try to select my Pictures -> iPhoto Library from the Screen Saver it is greyed out.

There are no drivers. I didn't have to install anything the first time around, there's nothing on the website that mentions OSX support.
