Iphoto library corrupted/unreadable, do I need new IPhoto software

Did not backup photo library, message says library unreadable/corrupted. What now?

Try iPhoto Library Manager, a free program: http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
I've used it to several times rebuild and consolidate my iPhoto library, but not (yet) to attempt to fix a corrupted library.

I have tried everything I know to retrieve the iPhoto Library app.  I detest this new Photo app, which obviously wasn't designed with photographers in mind.  I desperately need help in retrieving the old app and have not been able to do it so far.  I have gone to my app folder and tried to update my iPhoto Library.  I have gone to my trash and brought it over to my desktop and still cannot use it.  Please help!

Try this fix discovered by User photosb189:
From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old), unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto.

  • HELP... after Mountain Lion and iPhoto software update. My library was updating and then corrupted

Smooth update to ML and then ran software udate. It suggested I update iPhoto. I did that and then restarted computer and then tried to open iPhoto. It told me that it would update my library and not be able to go back to an earlier version. I clicked okay. Part way through an error window came up saying that my library was corrupted and that I need to go to a back up.  I have most on a back up, but not all. Can I trouble shoot this library or open the package and remove the most recent photos I need to my older back up?
Please advise - I really like the ML until this happened.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I am wondering what is the best way to merge a very large iphoto library (from my MBP) to my new iMac (which has a few hundred photos on it now), and then upgrade to Aperture?

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
I have a new iMac with a few hundred photos that I've uploaded since I bought it last December.
The iMac is where I want to keep everything stored as my main photo library, and manage it with a new Aperture installation.
Before I go and do this, and possibly muck it all up,
I would like to figure out the proper steps.
I am not too familiar with how to transfer files in the first place, so any help for a beginner would be much appreciated.
Starting from how to safely move the files from the MBP to the iMac, if anyone could walk me through this process.
I've been searching around but I have a specific goal (with getting everything into Aperture) so I don't want to get crossed up.
    Thanks for your help!!

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
To be able to merge your libraries, your Aperture version and iPhoto version must match. For basic reading see: Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
and Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
Assuming you are running the latest Aperture and iPhoto versions:
Before merging libraries ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues. While still on your old mac run the "library first aid tools" on your iPhoto Library. Hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click your iPhoto Library, then select "Repair database".
Make sure you have a backup of your current Aperture Library and iPhoto library.
Do both macs have a FireWire port? Then you could connect your macs in Target Disk Mode:
See OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
This way your new mac could see your old mac as an external disk and you could copy directly between the macs.
Otherwise copy your iPhoto library by drag-and-drop to an external disk (on your old mac) and connect that disk to your new mac. Check, if the external drive is formatted for mac (MacOS X Extended (Journaled)). Otherwise reformat it, before you copy the iPhoto library to that drive.
When your iPhoto Library has been moved to your new Mac launch Aperture and use the command "File > Import > Library" from the main menu bar. If there are duplicates in the Aperture library (if you imported earlier from iPhoto) you may be prompted if you want to "Add" or "Merge". If you have lots of duplicates, pick "Merge", otherwise "Add".
Post back, if you need more detailed instructions.
    Good Luck.

  • I want to copy my iphoto library from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro.

I am having a lot of difficulty copying my existing iphoto library from our imac to our new macbook pro.  We have the two computers set up through Time Machine.  I tried using dropbox and though I was successful until I tried to click on the thumbnails of some of the pics and only got a black image and a "!". The pics that would open could not be edited.  When I look at permissions I show that every category are read and write ( I changed them all to try and resolve this).  When I pull up info on the macbook about the library it still shows the imac extension on the library.  Don't know if that is a problem or not.  Tried to copy the files again and it stopped mid process saying I did not have permission?!  Both computers are running Lion.  This permission thing is making me crazy.  What am I missing?  We don't need restricted permission on either computer.. it's our house not a business w/ employees!!

Why don't you copy the library to a flash drive and then copy to the other Mac?

  • I bought a new ipod and tried to sync it to my library but it said I needed an update version of itunes.  My mac os 10.5.8 won't let me update.  Do I need to update my OS to leopard then to lion?

I tried to sync a new ipod to my itunes library, but it said I need to update my itunes version.  When I tried to update, it would not let me. Do I need to upgrade my OS system to Leopard then to Lion?

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
10.6.8 is needed for full compatibility with the iPod Touch. You can upgrade to Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements, but it is not needed to use your new iPod.

  • "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded".  Aperture already up to date. still cant open aperture library. please advice

When I try to open my aperture library, this is the message pop out  " TO OPEN THIS iPHOTO LIBRARY IN APERTURE, IT FIRST NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED. "
My apperture application is already up to date. no more upgrade available. please advice what to do.

The update refers to the library not the application.
So is this an Aperture library you are trying to open in iPhoto or an iPhoto library you are trying to open in Aperture? You're post is confusing on this point.
In either case make sure the library is up-to-date in the originating application then the other should open it.
BTW what version of iPhoto abnd Aperture are you running?

  • Can not open aperture. Get this message "to open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it." I have iPhoto 9.4.2. HELP

I have done all the necessary updates. Just very frustrated.

Someone else recently ran into a similar issue. If you're sure you've opened the library in the latest version of iPhoto, try the troubleshooting steps in that thread.
The fellow in that thread eventually fixed his library by grabbing his DataModelVersion.plist file from a backup of his library and putting it in his new library, but your milage may vary.

I have removed all iphoto files and avatars as one person has suggested. I am suppose to reinstall iPhoto using the discs that came with the computer.
I am not sure what to do with any options that might be provided. Any help will be appreciated.

Be sure the DNG Converter's compatibility is set to provide support for your version of ACR:

  • Have a large library of music on my iphone 5s. I have just upgraded to iphone6. I believe I need to have all my music in my itunes library to transfer it to my new phone - however all I can see in my itunes library is music I have purchased recently

I have a large library of music on my iphone 5s. I have just upgraded to iphone6. I believe I need to have all my music in my itunes library to transfer it to my new phone - however all I can see in my itunes library is music I have purchased recently. This library of music is from years ago. Ho can I get all my music on my new phone ? Thanks

See turingtest2's user tip on Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.  You should, however, maintain your library on your PC and maintain a regular backup of it.  iPhones are neither designed as nor suitable as data storage devices.

  • What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

Surprisingly easy! Go into the Finder, then into the Photos Library. In there, there will be a file called your iPhoto Library. It holds all your photos, essentially a special type of folder. Using an external hard drive transfer it to the same location on your new Mac. Now, when you boot iPhoto on the new Mac, it will recognise it and you'll see all your photos instantly!

  • Problems with new library - old library corrupt.

    Right. Here's the story.
My iTunes library corrupted (this has happened a few times) so the only solution I saw was to create a new library.
I don't mind having to create new playlists etc and sync new music, but the problem is with my iPhone:
When I try to sync, it syncs contacts and calendars etc but it says that it is synced to a different library so I should erase and sync when I try to update music. So I do this, but because I don't want to lose texts messages and notes stored on my iPhone I restore it from the backup. But then the back up seems to store information as to which library it is synced with and so it says I have to erase and sync again.
So, the question is, is there anyway of syncing my iPhone with a new library but retaining all the data that is not normally synced with iTunes (notes, text messages etc) ?
    Thanks for your help.

I don't have an iphone - you might have some luck asking over in the iphone forums.
However, I notice you've a Vaio. If you read , and disable that sony program named VCFw.exe, it may solve the root problem of your itunes library getting corrupted.

  • What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

You can copy your iPhoto Library to an external hard disk, USB flash drive, or other media (depending on the size of your iPhoto library). Then, you'd copy the iPhoto Library from that media to the same location on your iMac.
Using the Finder, navigate to your Home folder (or click on Go from the menu bar and click on Home). Open the Pictures folder, select your iPhoto Library and then from the menu bar choose "Edit" and then "Copy". Then navigate to your external disk, click on "Edit", and then click on "Paste".
Then, insert your media on the iMac, and copy the iPhoto Library from your external media to the same location on your iMac (the Pictures folder located under your Home folder).
Hope that helps, have a great day.
