IPhoto Library Disappeared After Updates

So heres what happened I think. Back when you could create a merged iphoto and Aperture library I told the programs both no. Because my iphoto library was messed up from an upgrade back in '06. I then had to have my iMac hard drive replaced due to failing hard drive. Restored my computer from Backup once the new hard drive was put in and now the only library that shows up is my Aperture library and not my iphoto. There is an empy void in both my finder and my Time Machine where the library used to be in my photos folder. I think I have lost all the photos but would like thoughts. These photos are not anywhere else and go back to 2004.

I have checked the backup and there is a void in the backup folder where the iphoto library used to be. a search of the backup for .library files only turned up the Aperture/iPhoto combined library that only has my Aperture photos. Same for computer internal hard drive but that makes sense because computer is a carbon copy of external.

  • IPhoto Library disappeared after update

Just updated to 10.4.9. It appeared to go fine, but when I opened iPhoto, the message came that "Photo Library not Found". Used Spotlight, but can't locate anything. In fact, it seems that the whole Pictures Folder has vanished.
Interestingly, my wife also uses this computer and her iPhoto Library is still in her Pictures Folder, which is just where it should be.
I do have my photos backed up on a DVD, so I'm not totally crazy here, but i would like to know what's going on. Jeez, I'm glad I did back up the photos. I hadn't gotten around to backing up some more recent ones, but i do have the bulk of them on DVD. Anybody have any thoughts?
If no one has any idea where I might locate the photo library, I'll then be asking for help in how to create a new library from my DVD.
    Thanks.

    I would start by:
    • Booting from your Mac's OSX Install Disc and running Disc Utility off of that. This will give you the options to Verify Disk and Repair Disk, possibly repairing a damaged directory structure.
    • Alternatively, you can boot into Single User Mode (hold down Command+S after the chime) and type "fsck -f" (sans quotes). This will check your disk for possible data or directory corruption, but won't repair it; you'll still need to boot off of the OSX Disc for that.
    • If you've got it, you could use a third-party utility such as Disk Warrior to repair your directory structure, as this can sometimes do a better job than Disk Utility.
Great job on saving your photos with a backup, but I surely wouldn't put them back until you're sure that there's no data corruption on your drive. Also, make sure you back up anything important for ALL USERS before you Verify or Repair the disk. Corrupt data is never fun...
    Best of luck,
    Chris

  • IPhoto Library 'disappeared' after Yosemite crash and iPhoto upgrade

I have upgraded my iMac to Yosemite and have been using iPhoto fine since then (although it is a bit slow),  yesterday iPhoto crashed the computer, after several restarts the computer was ok, but iPhoto wouldn't load and then said it needed to be upgraded - So I did this and when I opened this again it crashed then said that it needed to upgrade the library and then it crashed (iPhoto) when I restarted it started with no library and would appear to have overwritten the iPhoto (default) library, I have checked this and although there are other libraries, I am aware of these and these are not my missing library.  I found some information on http://www.scanyourentirelife.com/all-my-pictures-in-iphoto-disappeared-how-to-s afely-get-them-back/ and this talks about looking in the 'Masters' file but to be very careful as altering this will cause problems with edits etc.  Anyway I found that in my directory a file called 'Old Masters' as well as 'Masters' and it would appear that all of my pictures are now in 'Old Masters'.
So I am opening the right file but how do I make the 'Old Masters' the 'Masters' - is it as easy as shifting the files or changing the name on the file?
Tech Stuff - My iMac is running 10.10 Yosemite and is about 1 year old 27" version and I keep everything up to date (for my sins) - My library 700+ events and is about 176gb in size
    Your help would be appreciated

    Armelle,
there is unfortunately not yet any known way to repair an iPhoto Library, that got corrupted during the upgrade by a crash.
You can either restore your iPhoto library from the last backup you made before you tried to upgrade the library, and then try to upgrade again.
Or if your last backup cannot be restored or is too old, copy all photos you can find in the iPhoto Library package and import them into a new iPhoto Library.
but I can see my picture in "old Thumbnails".
The "Old Thumbnails" are only smaller sized versions of your photos. Don't you at least have "Old Originals" or "Old Modified"?

  • IPhoto Library gone after update to OSX Yosemite 10.10.3

Put another way, how do I get the new "Photos" program associated with the new OSX Yosemite v. 10.10.3 to see my former iPhoto library that is stored on an external hard drive?
    Here's the full story:
This morning I updated my MacBook Air to OSX Yosemite v. 10.10.3.  The update claimed that it ran successfully.  Afterwards, I plugged in my iPhone to sync it to the computer.  There were photos on my phone that I'd taken yesterday, so when I plugged the iPhone in to the USB cable, a program launched that I thought was iPhoto (but, as it turns out, is actually a new Apple program called simply "Photos").  I was led through a series of questions, one of which was "do you want to download your photos to iCloud?"  I did not want to download my photos to the cloud; first off, I've got like 100GB of photos and second off, even if there were that much space allowed with an iCloud account, I wouldn't have wanted to take the time.  After skipping that download-to-the-cloud step, the new "Photos" program downloaded the pictures taken yesterday off of my phone and deleted them from my iPhone as I'd requested.  But, when the transfer from phone to computer completed, I was taken to the new Photos program and the only pictures on my account are those that were downloaded this morning from my iPhone.
Because I've got so many photos I keep my iPhoto Library on an external hard drive.  I keep two additional external hard drives that back up everything every night.  I am not worried about the photos being lost, but I can't figure out how to get the new "Photos" program to go find that library on my external hard drive.
    All help appreciated.

To migrate your existing library to Photos is simple: just open it.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You problem is that you will no have two libraries - the converted iPhoto one and the one you created with just these iPhone photos.
So I would export the pics from the new Photos Library to the Finder: (File -> Export-> Export unmodified  originals
Trash the Photos library from your Pictures Folder
    Convert the iPhoto Library
Then import those photos from the Finder.

  • Why is my iPhoto library blank after update?

    Strange things that happened:
    1) I updated to Yosemite from mavericks
    2) accidentally unplugged external drive storing iPhoto library
    3) tried to open iPhoto and it told me that my library was out of date and needed to be updated and rebuilt
    4) went though this process but it crashed
    5) tried reopening iPhoto but it now asked for permissions to be updated
    6) iphoto crashed again during this updating
    7)  ran through this a couple more attempts
    8) opened iPhoto to find a blank library
    9) pointed iPhoto to library but still shows as empty
    10) tried pointing to another library and again to original with no success
    11) opened iPhoto library package and I now have 'old masters' and 'Masters'
    12) several years seem to be missing from these two folders
    13) I have been backing up what I can from these folders
Q1 - Does anyone have any idea where the missing years could be? I did have some photos out of there appropriate years so could they be in another year's folder possibly. What is the best way to search for these in finder?
Q2- What is the best way to rebuild library? note-my time machine does not backup my photo library due to size of 600gb
    Thanks in advance!

    11) opened iPhoto library package and I now have 'old masters' and 'Masters'
    12) several years seem to be missing from these two folders
You got bitten by a nasty bug.
The upgrade of your library got interrupted, and some of your photos are still in the "Old ..." folders.  There is no known fix for this, that can save your iPhoto library. We are still waiting for a bug fix from Apple. What you can do, copy out your original photos, that are still in the "Old Masters" and "Masters", and save these folders.
Then restore your library from your most recent backup and use the saved "Old " folders  to reimport and add the newest photos, that are missing in your backup.
The "years" folders in "Masters" and "Old Masters"  are the years, when the photos have been imported, not necessarily the years when the photos have been taken.

  • IMovie 9.0.6 doesn't recognise videos in my iPhoto library anymore after update

Just updated iPhoto & iMovie and now iMovie wont recognise the videos in my iPhoto library and there is no simple way of importing them.

How do I trash the iMovie Preferences File? and Why?
Also, sometimes iMovie will not see your iPhoto, or your Aperture, or your iTunes. This can also be fixed many times by trashing the preferences. In this case, look for a preferences file called com.apple.iApps.plist
Many times people will suggest that you trash your preferences because it is the easiest thing to do. You want to try all the easy stuff before re-installing OSX, for example.
If iMovie is still working, go to iMovie/Preferences and note your current preferences so you can easily re-enter them later.
To trash your preferences, close iMovie.
    Then open the Finder.
Press CMD + SHIFT + G or, if you prefer,  'Go > Go to Folder' in the top menu.
Type: ~/Library/Preferences/     (Note: The Tilde ~ is on the uppercase position on the key to the left of the number 1 on your keyboard)
    Press Go
Drag the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file and/or the com.apple.iApps.plist file to the trash.
    Next, empty the trash.
If you trashed the com.Apple.iApps.plist, then open iTunes, iPhoto, and Aperture so they are pointing at the library you wish to use in iMovie. (You can then close them.)
    Finally, restart iMovie.
Remenber to go to iMovie/Preferences and re-enter your preferences. Be sure to enable the Advanced Tools.

  • IPhoto Library Locked after update

Hi. I recently purchased a MacBook Air, which I've networked to my iMac. When trying to open my iMac iPhoto Library through iPhoto on my MacBook Air, I received a message saying that I needed to update the current version of the iPhoto Library on my MacBook Air in order to view the photos. So I followed the instructions in the dialogue box and updated the software (which took almost 8 hours). Now, the software on my Air is iPhoto 9.1 and the software on my iMac is 8.1.2. When trying to open iPhoto from my iMac directly, I now receive an error message stating "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have permissions to make changes to it." I searched through iPhoto Help topics initially and followed the suggestion to open the "Rebuild Photo Library" window by holding down option and control when opening iPhoto, and then selecting "Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions". No errors where found, however, a message appeared indicating that i needed to update my iPhoto Library software (as it did initially with my MacBook Air). However, this time it did not prompt me to update the software from the dialogue box, and when trying to update the software, no updates were found.
    Any suggestions?

You opened your Library with iPhoto 9.1.
The Library was upgraded to a v9 format. You were warned +before this happened+ that you would no longer be able to open the Library with an earlier version. You went ahead anyway.
Now, you have a v9 Library and are trying to open it with a v8 iPhoto on the iMac. As warned, it can't open it.
To upgrade from v8 to v9 requires a purchase of an iLife 11 disk.

  • Where is my IPhoto library? I updated and the last two years of photos disappeared. Help., Where is my IPhoto library? I updated and the last two years of photos disappeared. Help.

Where is my IPhoto library? I updated and the last two years of photos disappeared. Help., Where is my IPhoto library? I updated and the last two years of photos disappeared. Help.Thank you.

Simple and fast solution: restore from your back up.
    Other than that:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    Here comes the/my solution:
    Remove Sophos Antivirus
    Thanks to boojum's remarks in https://discussions.apple.com/message/15480849#15480849 !
    Don't forget to use Sophos' deinstall package: /Macintosh HD/Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg
Nevertheless, some settings have been re-initialized (no complete list!):
    - Dock
    - Language has been reset to English only
    - Expose & Spaces

our iphoto library disappeared.  how do we find it again?

    Hi laurie,
About a month ago, a friend of mine called and said that his i photo library had suddenly evaporated.  When I took a look at his computer screen, I saw a very small sliver of gray at the bottom of his screen.
I put the cursor on it and was able to drag up the i photo library he thought was lost. Someone had dragged the iphoto window all the way down to the bottom of the screen, where you could only see a small sliver of it.
Who knows? Maybe your problem is as simple as that.
