IPhoto library grayed out, or disappears

Because my old iMac has such a tiny hard drive, I have to keep my iPhoto library on an external hard drive. This seems to create troubles like:
1) Sometimes when I start up iPhoto, the iPhoto library is missing.
2) Other times, the library is there, but it's grayed out.
I have a second external hard drive that I keep a backup on. My current situation is that when I try to open iPhoto using my original library, it's grayed out. When I open the library in the Finder, it is not. I tried copying the iPhoto library from my backup external drive to the original external drive, but it failed. Currently I'm using the backup version to look at my pictures, but I want to get the library back on my primary external drive before I add any pictures or make changes. I have about 10,000 pictures and I've already lost a year's worth of pictures and metadata on even more due to the library disappearing.
Questions:
1) What can I do to keep the library from either disappearing or becoming grayed out?
2) Why won't the library copy to the original external drive from the backup?
3) What can I do to resolve my current issue with the least risk of losing my backup version?
(Using iPhoto of iLife '08)

My current situation is that when I try to open iPhoto using my original library, it's grayed out.
What method are you using to select the Library? Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'? If so, iPhoto won't open this Library because it does not see a valid Library file there.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
When I open the library in the Finder, it is not.
Do you mean by clicking on the Library Icon? In iPhoto 08 this simply opens the +last opened library+ not necessarily the Library you click on.

  • IPhoto Library Grayed Out

I upgraded to iPhoto 08 and now cannot go directly to my photos as the iPhoto library icon in "Pictures" is grayed out. I can get it off my external drive. This means that I cannot attach a photo in my web based email, neither Yahoo or Gmail, from my Mac because I cannot get to the file. I end up going to the mounted HDD to accomplish this task. I used to be able to do this with iPhoto 6 and would prefer to do so as I do not always have the drive mounted. Any ideas?

One of the problems with posting into a thread is that you can easily be missed. Especially when you say
I am also having a similar issue.
But it's not. The OP on this thread was talking about accessing files in the Finder, you're dealing with a damaged database.
    Some things to try:
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that fails, then it's likely that your database file is damaged.

  • Iphoto still grayed out after iphoto upgrade after mavericks install, what should I do?

After upgrading to mavericks Iphoto was Grayed out. The computer Notified me that I would have to upgrade iphoto from 9.2.1 to to latest version.
went to the mac app store, the upgrade page showed the iphoto upgrade, it downloaded and installed the upgrade but iphoto is still grayed out in the dock and in the applications folder. The mac app store shows the iphoto upgrade as being installed. whot should I do?

First, make sure the new copy of iPhoto was not installed as a separate icon in your Applications folder.
If that's not the case, try launching it anyway; I've seen instances where the icon fails to update until the associated application is launched for the first time.

  • Why is my iPhoto library greyed out in the Screensaver folder selection dialog on one iMac but not my other?

Why is my iPhoto library greyed out in the Screensaver folder selection dialog on one iMac but not my other?

I have an update to my issue above, with a Semi-solution found. I brought my Macbook Air back to the Genus bar today and they were able to identify (using “Activity Monitor”) that when the particular iPhoto library was being launched through iPhoto both Photostream and iPhoto's CPU% usage was excessively high (between 100% - 200% each). She discovered that if we turn off Photostream in iCloud settings iPhoto then behaved fast and snappy and CPU% came back down to a healthier level. When we turned Photostream back on the problem continued. After an hour of trying to trouble shoot why Photostream was causing the issue they recommended I keep Photostream turned off until a future software update/fix comes out. The particular Genus I worked with was not familiar with this issue. I’m very happy to at least be able to use iPhoto again, but if anyone has ideas or theories on how the Photostream conflict can be fixed please share. Thanks.

  • IPhoto pictures grayed out

I tried scanning a picture for the first time...I sent it to iPhoto, dragged it onto Library, and--it is fine, but all previous photos in Library and other albums, are now all grayed out. How do I resolve this? Thank you.
    PowerMac12,1 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

That's a bummer. It seems maybe a data file got corrupt.
See if creating a new library will get your images back.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Iphoto Library greyed-out

I have recently discovered that I cannot access my iPhoto Library when using Photoshop. I open the pictures folder, they all appear except that the "iPhoto Library" is greyed-out. If I go through "Applications", iPhoto is greyed out. When I use iPhoto I can access the photos. Any ideas or suggestions? (I downloaded iLife8 not long before I encountered this problem)

    gazie
Here's how you access photos that are in iPhoto for photoshop:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
This has always been the way to do this. There has never been a need to access the iPhoto Library Folder using the Finder, and any attempt to do this risked damaging your library.
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Music on library grayed out/Itunes purchases being made twice

Songs are grayed out on my Itunes library. They were deleted from my Nano when I synced it, and I can't put them back on. I tried deleting one of the songs off my library and re downloading it, but Itunes just charged me for it a second time. This isn't the first time I've been charged for a song that didn't actually end up on my library. I want to find a way to get the grayed songs back on to my Ipod and get my money back for the songs I was never even given.

Is the computer authorized for the Apple ID that the content was acquired with?
Is the device backing up to iTunes on the computer or iCloud?  If backing up to iCloud purchases do not automatically transfer, the user must manually select Transfer Purchases.

  • Some audio clips suddenly grayed out, waveform disappeared, not working

In CS6 on my MacBook Pro, I was all done editing several sequences and exported them via Media Encoder so that I could have video files to upload to the web. When I looked at the final video files that came out, 4 out of the 6 were missing the audio from the A1 track. I went back into the project file and found that the audio seemed to have disappeared from those particular sequences. The waveform no longer appears and it's grayed out. This is very strange since two of my sequences were fine and exported correctly.
I was able to double click the original audio source files in the project browser and the audio played fine from that. I took a clip from the source file and dragged it into the affected sequence and that particular clip's audio played fine too. The audio files are all .wav format.
I read other posts about similiar issues. I tried cleaning my media cache database. I also tried deleting preferences using Shift+Command when opening Premiere. I really don't want to have to go back and find all the audio clips and drag them in again!!

i'm afraid i don't have a useful answer for this one...
if the POD has level controls of its own (knobs, sliders, whatever), what you're seeing is generally the normal condition:

  • 10.8 server shared drive graying out - then disappearing?

    Hi,
Im new to the community and would really appreciate some help !!
I have installed two servers now (different hardware) macpro towers with 10.8.2 server and after a short period of time the shared drives gray out, the disapaer from the desktop.
Users can still connect across the LAN, the hardware is definately not daulty as i have swapped with new drives and rebuilt. Software was from the App's store as download.
Is this a server 10.8 bug?
    Any help appreciated

    Hi Simon,
    Thanks for the reply.
Its the hard drive on the server its self that is disapearing, so when you are on the server screen the "work" hard drive (which is independant to the sysem HD) is dispappearing. This is happening on two server on two different locations and networks - all the hardware is 100% and the LAN users can still connect to the server share and copy and save.
The issue is on the server its self. The drive disappears and not even viewable in the finder - only way to access it is via "go" - "go to folder".
In disk utility the drive is there and is indicatig its mounted but its not !!!.....the server were both working fine for 2/3 weeks and the work drives were visable on desktop and fine, and in prefs the HD are set to be visable
Because its on two sites that are totaly indepndant the only common factor is both are running 10.8.2 server which indicates its a software / bug issue????
    Hope that is clearer
    Thanks again

  • Updated Nano software - Library "grayed out"

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help. I have a shuffle and nano and have had no trouble to date synching with my windows xp itunes.
Tonite I installed the latest version of the nano software (1.10.2006), and now when I double click the nano icon in itunes, all of the songs and playlists are grayed out. I can update the ipod, but can't click on anything within the list. For example, if I wanted to delete a song on the nano, I can no longer do it.
    Any thoughts?

  • ITunes library grayed out all the time- in between songs played. Must click on cloud icon and wait between each song played.

Whenever I invoke iTunes (doesn't matter if I'm opening the program or simply undocking it), my library is gray, and the little "cloud icon" next to "Music" has a horizontal lightning bolt in it.
If I click on the cloud icon with the bolt (which doesnt respond consistently, somtimes takes 3 or more clicks) it will change to animated diagonal stripes. When this is finished (takes 10 seconds to 10 minutes), I have access to my library.
Sometimes it lets me get through an album before the process restarts. Sometimes I have to go through this between each song. Generally, I perform the process for the first two songs, and then it will play the rest of the album uninterrupted.
Internet connection is always fine, I have confirmed in several instances.
I have added screen shots below... I couldn't add the "working library" step, because as of writing this, I can't get past step 2. So no music for me this morning.
BELOW: Greyed out library, step 1
BELOW: Animated striped icon, library still greyed out, step 2

Thanks for the reply. Did this just now, and no change.
FYI- I have deauthorized and reauthorized, signed out of my iTunes account, deleted pLists, etc before posting here. None of which affected the problem.

  • Migrated iPhoto images grayed out

I just received my new MacBook Pro this week. I migrated information from my iMAC to the MacBook Pro. I opened iPhoto and all the images that are in iPhoto are blank dashed-lined boxes. Before migrating I update the iMac to make sure everything was as new as possible. I there anything I can do to fix the images other than just trashing all the images and getting the images from the old iMac on a disc or card and then reburning them on the new MacBook?

Usually one sees this, when LR believes the images are already imported. You are certain that your Catalog does not already include them? On my PC, when I hover over one of these greyed-out images, I get a tooltip which (among other things) explains that "this photo has already been imported". Also if you change the selector at the top of the Import dialog grid from "all photos" to "new photos", if the thumbnail grid then becomes empty, that is your explanation. LR doesn't think these are new images.
I believe that the "don't import suspected duplicates" option - which is turned on by default - will also reject images that appear to be mere extra renames of the same original camera file - due to showing the same original capture file name in the EXIF metadata.
But in order for "don't import suspected duplicates" to activate, there have to be images present which these new ones would be duplicates of. So I would advise first checking for any LR filters, or other selective viewing that might be currently stopping you from seeing these if they are within LR.
Repeatedly importing files is likely not the answer; once should be enough AFAICT.

  • IPhoto Grayed Out when using QuarkxPress 8

Created original Quark docs on old (G4) computer using Quark 4.11. Imported old documents and iPhoto picts into new iMac. Have Quark 8. In updating old Quark documents which contain picts, am receiving message:
"Some disk files for pictures in this layout are missing or have been modified."
I click list pictures button. Print box is checked, ...status is missing
More information says "This picture has been moved or the name has been changed since it was imported."
However when I go to User /Pictures / iPhoto Library to bring picts into document , iPhoto is grayed out.
What do I need to do for these picts to be recognized and brought into these documents?

I have a MacBook 13 in from late 2009 w/ 2.26 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.  I have 105 GB free and 88 GB iphoto library.
I upgraded to Yosemite and when I open iPhoto it says that the library needs to be upgraded.  When I choose upgrade, the status window almost completes, but then gets stuck before the very end (even after a few hours).
I am not sure which version of iPhoto I had pre-Yosemite.  When I tried to do the iPhoto 9.1 update, it says that I need 9.0 installed first.  Do I need to buy and install 9.0 (as part of iLife 11)?  I can't determine which version of iPhoto I currently have on my computer (About iPhoto is grayed out), so I am not sure if I even need to install a version prior to 9.0?  Could this be causing the problem w/ the library upgrade?
Is the 2 GB memory too little and contributing to this problem?
I did backup with Time Machine prior to the Yosemite install (had iOS 10.7.5).

That has happened to others and the following has been able to fix it for some: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
