IPhoto library hasn't moved but photos have...

I recently migrated my photos from one external drive to another and subsequently the path has changed...how can I update my iPhoto library? I have my library set not to copy photos to the iPhoto library. I am hoping that there is a configuration/library file that I can edit manually to reflect the updated file location. Currently, when I open iPhoto, my photos (in thumb form) display but when I click on on them it tells me that the path is not available. I would just re-import them all but I do not want to lose all the facial recognition data.

As Larry says, this is a Referenced Library and - to add to the fun - the files are stored on a different volume to the actual Library.
In a Referenced Library iPhoto creates an alias in the Originals folder that points to the location of the file. This alias has all the weaknesses of any alias, and especially when the file linked to is on another volume.
No, there is no
configuration/library file that I can edit manually
just a whole lot of broken aliases.
You can try repair those aliases with an app like [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy> , convert to a Managed Library (as Larry suggests) or repair those aliases one by one.

I think the usual advice is to use the Rebuild command in Library Manager.

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list.  I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

  • How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library?  It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library.

How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library?  It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library.  I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one.  They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device."  I hadn't touched the camera.  The message came by itself.  I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit.  Opening it back up, the pictures were gone.  Can somebody help me?

What version of iPhoto are you running?  Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • HELP! Copied the iPhoto Library folder to backup, but files are smaller

Help! To get more space on my laptop, I copied some photos to a backup hard drive, following the instructions in iPhoto help: "Copy the iPhoto Library folder on your hard disk to another disk." I then deleted many of the photos from my laptop.
Now I'm looking at the photo files on the backup hard drive, and noticing that they are much smaller in size than the originals, for example 45 KB versus 1.1 MB. I tried a test photo by copying a photo from the hard drive back into iPhoto on my laptop, then opened the photo next to the original. Much smaller resolution!
Then I go to the laptop's iPhoto Library Folder (where all the photos are supposed to reside) and find this particular photo, and sure enough, it shows that the file size is indeed much smaller (45 KB) than the photo information shows when I have the photo open in iPhoto (1.1 MB).
So what's going on? Have I lost the detailed information on all of the backed-up photos, or does iPhoto get more information from somewhere? Am I really backing up everything when I follow the iPhoto Help instructions and just copy the iPhoto Library Folder?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It sounds as if you copied the Data folder only which contains the thumbnail files. If you don't have a backup or the entire library or the original files I'm afraid you're out of luck. You could try recovering them from the HD (if you haven't used it much since deleting the image files) with SubrosaSoft FileSalvage. It will let your run it in demo mode to see what files, if any, can be recovered before you have to purchase it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can I trash iPhoto library after "importing" them into Photos ?

    Hi everybody.
I have a 157 GB iPhoto library file, with all my photos and videos.
With the last OS X update, Photos was installed.
I told Photos, that the iPhoto library, should be  "Use as System Photo library".
I now have 2 libraries...one for iPhoto and one for Photos. They seem about the same size.
My question now is: Can I now trash the iPhoto library?
Did it import everything from that library, to the Photos library now?
I need the space...Hope somebody can help with this!
    Thank you!

    HI Bobby.
    Thanks's for the answer
I'm going to wait until I have everything uploaded to iCloud then. Takes a while.
Funny thing is, that before the "big import" to Photos, I had about 70GB left on the HD. And the reason why I get suspicious is, that now I have those 2 libraries, each around 157GB. Doesn't make sense to me. Seems like my HD just magically got an extra 100GB , if they in fact are separate libraries.

  • I have several iPhoto and aperture libraries... i want to get to one iPhoto library keeping only the latest photos. How can I do this?

Okay... I made the mistake of creating duplicate Aperture libraries because I decided I wanted to only use Aperture - then the news that Aperture is no longer going to be developed. I then confused myself and created duplicate iPhoto libraries (I can't even remember why anymore). At one point or another I have edited pictures in all of them and have no idea which pictures were edited. I just want to have one iPhoto library with the most recently edited photos and remove all the duplicates.
What is the best way to do this?
And... after doing all that, I need to keep backups of my photos on an external drive. What is the best way to do this?
    iPhoto version 9.5.1
Thank you so much for any advice you can provide!

You can merge libraries into one with Aperture 3.3. or later.
Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
In merge-mode it will only keep the photos from one of the libraries.
And you can use Aperture to export partial libraries containing only the selected albums, projects, etc.
If you need to keep projects (books, calendars, cards) when merging your libraries, use Aperture and not iPLM:

  • I need to restore iphoto library from time machine, but have a question

I need to rebuild my library but already have 5 libraries which are taking too much space on my HD to finish a complete rebuild. Is it safe to move those 5 libraries to the trash and restore the one from time machine???
    thanks in advance,
    Kari

IF nothing goes wrong - hardware - software - human - then you will be fine
Personally my photos are important to me and I'd purchase an external harddrive and backup everything to it first - then do the deletes/rebuild etc
Then I would continue using the new EHD for a second backup using a clone package (Carbon Copy Cloner or SUperDuper)

I have a macbook pro w exisitng iPhoto library. I now have Canon printer and loaded Canon software for same. I cannot access iPhoto library for use from Canon software. I can print from iPhoto directly to new printer without problem. How can I use iPhoto library with Canon software? I would like to try the software to see which I prefer...

Simply export some photos from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and experiment.
Without telling us even what this program is, not to mind what it does, that's the best anyone can suggest.

  • What is going on?  I can't access my iPhoto files from any other programs.  It just says "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list", but that doesn't work.  What changed?

All of a sudden I can't access my iPhoto files from any other programs (ie Photoshop, facebook etc.).  It just gives me this message below.  What the **** changed?  This wasn't happening yesterday.

    1 - close iPhoto.
2 - go to your Pictures folder and open the iPhoto Library package as shown below:
3 - locate a file named AlbumData.xml and move it to the Desktop.
    4 - launch iPhoto.
5 - relaunch the other programs and try the media browser again.

  • IPhoto Library Problem; Can't See Photos

Hi guys. Looking for a little help here. I typically ran a desktop and my wife ran a laptop. We kept our files for iTunes and iPhoto separate. I had an account set up on her laptop just for basic browsing, email and iWork via iCloud documents. However I really need to take her laptop on some work related travel for over a week. I set up a copy of my music and my iPhoto library on an external hard drive to use on my account and it was working great. We ended up buying her a new laptop today and set it up via her most recent Time Machine back up (which was this morning). It set up both her account and mine. We ended up deciding to sell her old laptop and used disc utility to reformat and reinstall 10.10.
As we will be moving around a bunch soon we decided to sell my desktop as well so I did one final Time Machine backup and then reformatted and reinstalled 10.10 as well. Just minutes later I went to open iPhoto on the new laptop under my account and it said it needed to be updated before I could use it. It was working fine only a few hours earlier. Unfortunately it no longer sees the photos in my iPhoto library file on my external drive. The file is still there and is still the same size. The Old Masters folder inside the library package still has the pics, but iPhoto doesn't see it. So I tried to use the back up from my desktop to restore the library, but I can't seem to get my desktop back ups to work with Time Machine on the laptop.
So I have all the pictures on my small external drive library, just iPhoto won't see it. I also have a back up on my Time Machine external drive from just this morning (so only missing the five or six pictures taken today), but I can't seem to access that on the new laptop as it was set up with my wife's Time Machine back up. Is there any way to get the library file working or to get it off my back up drive? Or do I have to just get the raw files out of the Old Masters folder?
    Thanks

Then I can just wipe it again before shipping it to its new owner.

  • How do I delete my iPhoto library on my iPhone and just have photostream?

I have an iMac (main computer), MacBook Air and an iPhone. When I set up iCloud, somewhere along the way it synced my entire Macbook Air library onto my iPhone and I can't get rid of it. I like having photostream on all my devices as that's just 1000 photos, but my iPhoto library is huge and takes up all my storage on the iPhone.
How can I get my iphone to just have photostream and not my entire iPhoto library?
    Thanks

This doesn't work.  I unclick everything and it asks if I want to remove them from my iphone, I click yes obviously and then sync.  Within a second it says it can't complete this because there isn't enough space on my phone.  BS.  After I unclick the library the memory bar shows I would have 35GB of space if it would only sync. what is the problem????????
