IPhoto library. How does it work ?

Hi there. I am new to the whole iPhoto thing. But I went out and bought the iLife 08 and for me it just rocks. Everything I need to do.. It´s there. Great.
But I can´t really figure out how the iPhoto library work !?...
Normaly I just had all my pictures on my hard drive. I imported all those pictures (around 6000).. But instead of making a iPhoto library with the same size as all my pictures it´s only 5Gb instead of 25Gb !??! What´t the deal here ? Can a delete all my pictures and only work with the iPhoto library or is that only the size of the thumbnails it created ? and is useing my "original" photos on my hard drive ??
Any help on this would be great
THANKS

Your Advanced preferences in iPhoto should look like this:
If not then you're only using alias (link) files in the library pointing back to the "source" files that you imported. NO you can't delete those files you've imported. If your preferences are not as displayed, I suggest you move the library package to the Desktop, launch iPhoto and create a new Library. Then set the Advances preferences as shown above and the Events' preferences like this:
Now reimport your "original" photos again by dragging them into the open iPhoto window. The Evenrts preferences will insure that each folder imported from the Finder will remain in one Event instead of being split into multiple events based on the time frame set in the Events preferences.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT1198 Has anyone used this method of sharing an iPhoto library? Does it work when the library is stored on a OS X Server?

We have a Mac Mini Server for our small office running OS X Lion. Currently, we store our company photos in a folder on the shared drive of our server.
Some of our employees would like to use iPhoto to manage / edit photos, but there is no way (that I know of) to share a single iPhoto library among different machines.  I read the knowlege base articel HT1198, but I don't bellieve that it is a solution for our setup.
    Any guidance or input?

Give  Media Pro 1 a look.  You can keep the source files on a server and each user can have their own catalog file of those photos that will give them their own "library" of those photos.
However, when editing a photo it will edit the source photo and that will affect all users so be sure to have backups. You probably can set the source files to be read only if you don't want every one to be editing them. Or edit and always to a Save As to the individuals Mac.  You can add IPTC metadata annotations to the source files,
rename files, and catagorize the photos with labels, catalog sets and keywords.
The catalog contains preview photos (up to 640 x 640) of each photos that can be viewed even if the source files are not online or otherwise available.
Media Pro is available for both Macs and PCs and as a demo version to try out.  For other candidates visit the The DAM Forum (digital asset management).

  • Having Subfolder Library (How does grouping work?)

My girlfriend uses my computer and would like it if all of her music was in one folder. The idea would be that iTunes would add her music to the library so we can listen to all of our music, but that her music would stay organized (using a system she prefers over itunes' organizing)in it's own folder. I know I can tell iTunes to not move files from their original location, but that is, as far as i can tell, an on/off setting for the whole library. I'm worried I'd have to turn it off and then organize my music without iTunes help, or that if I turn it back on to add my own files, that her file system would be lost when iTunes reorganized her things. So is it possible to tell iTunes to leave files coming from one folder alone and none of the others? I thought maybe that was how grouping worked, I could set all her files to be grouped as "Kim's Music" and iTunes would set up a folder in the main music folder as "Kim's Music" but I can't get it to work if that is how it works.
    help!
    tony

Okay, I've read that solution in other posts. But if we did it that way, then the two libraries would be independent and not be able to be played together, which is one of our goals. But what about the option that tells iTunes not to move files from original locations? What if she has a set folder not in the itunes music library folder with her arrangment and what not, and I turn off the "move files" and the "organize my library" options when I add it to my library. When it's done adding and I turn those function back on for my own adding, will iTunes move her stuff? I'm going to do an experiment to check, but if you know for sure, please tell me.
Also, thanks for explaining grouping. Great example! Those two songs and the first two tracks of Sgt. Pepper's should always be played in sequence. Do you know if there is a way to make sure that they are grouped to play them in the right order? track #s i'm guessing?

  • How do I uninstall the iPhoto update which does not work on maverick?

How do I uninstall the iphoto update which does not work. ie it tells me my library is locked out and the recommended action by apple does not open the phot library first aid. ? i need to go back to the old iphoto.

Terence, I was trying a way to message you directly - jumping on a recent thread seemed to be the only way (sorry, DEW45).
Terence, you seem to be the foremost expert on apeture and iphoto and have helped me many times in the past (thanks).  I have a question that you may be able to help with (anyone also feel free to take a stab).  I use blogger to upload my photos and host my blog (www.sippingespresso.com).  I spend hours organzing and editing photos - namely, I will enhance and sometimes alter an image in Apeture.  It always saves over the orginal file (at least for viewing purposes), which is fine by me.  But then when I go to upload the photos onto blogger it seems to always pull my dull, original image.  Obviously, I want the newer, bright, enhanced photo.
I'm one step away from importing them, dragging them out of iphoto and into Photoshop, then editing the files and dragging them back into iphoto, deleting the originals and uploading from there.  There HAS to be a better way - please help!!  I've already posted far too many boring images without the beauty of Apeture's "auto enhance".
Thanks in advance, Terence or anyone else.

  • I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud.

I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud. Is iCloud pushing my phone's PhotoStream to my computer if it doesn't have the latest OS? Thanks so much for whoever can help!

iCloud will not work with your computer because iCloud requires Lion. Lion requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better. For you to have iCloud and PhotoStream you would need to buy a newer Mac Intel model meeting the requirements for Lion:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • TS1425 My co worker has given me his iPod to take home and transfer his music to my laptop, however, I am unable to access his music to download it to my computer.  How does this work?

My co-worker has given me his iPod to take home and transfer his music to my laptop, however, I am unable to access his music to download it to my computer.  How does this work?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • How does artwork work?????

in my itunes library, i have songs that i bought from the itunes store and songs that i added from CDs or other download means ... i always make sure the artist, album and title match whats in itunes databes and then i right clikc choose get artwork ... i also have enable artwork display on ipod ...
is the artwork downloaded and added to the song file? or will it only display if connected to the internet? i do see the artwork on my ipod for all songs ... so i was just wondering how does it work?
    thanks.

I far as I know, it is added to the file (sort of). However, if you delete a song per say from your library that has album artwork downloaded from the store, when you add it back i'm pretty sure you'll have to re-download the artwork. A more probable case is if your songs accidentally get deleted from your library. *Tell me if you want to know how* to permanently add it to the file so if in case your songs accidentally get deleted, you don't have to worry about downloading the artwork again.

  • How does ANTIVIRUS work?

I know this isn't really related to java.
    How does ANTIVIRUS work?

Most virus scanners look for known virus "footprints"....patterns in the bytes of code that match a library that is part of the scanner. Others use heurisitcs ("artificial intelligence") to look for probable virus activity. Some use a combination of each.

  • How does this work?

This is not a complaint, but a confused sigh of admiration. I've got an email account at the university where I teach. When I got my iBook, it took me a while, and a few conversations with IT at the school, to get this account working in the Mail application. (Since I have a Verizon DSL at home, I had to include that SMTP as the outgoing server.) Anyway, I synched this mail account (along with my AOL and .Mac accounts) onto the iPhone, and it works perfectly, both incoming and outgoing. I didn't have to change any of the settings. I thought I was computer savvy, but I can't wrap my mind around this. It seems like magic. How does it work?

The sync process with iTunes transfers the email account settings (for your chosen accounts via your iPhone sync preferences) from the Mail application on your Mac to the iPhone's email application.
The iPhone is running OS X and the iPhone's email client can be considered a mobile version of the Mail application.

  • My iPhone was stolen and I have contacted the police who are using the meid number to locate.  How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back?

My iPhone was stolen.  I used Find My iPhone app to lock it and display a message.  The phone has not connected to the internet to locate it.  I contacted the police and they have taken my meid number.  How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back?  Are there other ways the theif can use it.  I was told once they put in a new sim card and use it, whatever software the police have, it will show up.

Honestly? In the US (I can't speak to other countries, though I doubt it works much differently in a lot of the world) The police took your report and filed it either in their computers or, on paper. They will now not think of this again. The only time it will cross anyones mind is if, in the course of entering information into evidence about items recovered or seized at a crime scene, the serial number of an iPhone that was found/seized happens to match yours, in which case you will be contacted.
The police in the US can and will do nothing to 'blok' the phone and it's not worth their time to try and locate it unless you know for a fact that it was stolen by a big time drug lord, master criminal, or some other such prime target and they can get a court order to track the location of the phone in order to locate this individual for your own purposes.  If they do that, they'll probably keep him under surveilance for a year or so before they act.
Basically, the police don't care about your phone. If they find it, they will give it back to you. They are not, however, going to go looking for it. They have better things to do.
I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

  • Was told a USB device would create a PDF automatically from the data contained within when plugged into my USB port. Doesn't seem to work. How does this work and how can I fix the device I received?

Acrobat is not on the USB device - only Adobe Reader needed on the PC. How does this work? How can I fix this device if at all?

You need to ask the people who sold it to you. Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with Reader.
However, you should be wary of devices that automatically try to open files when plugged in. They can also infect your computers with all kinds of viruses or malware.

  • How does Remote work with Apple TV?

How does Remote work with Apple TV?
    1. Does Remote, "Play" the music that resides on your iPod Touch>Apple TV>Home Speakers.
    OR
Does Remote "Control" the music that resides on Apple TV HD>Home Speakers.
(If so... say you have a iPod Touch that only holds 8GB's but your music collection on your Apple TV exceeds that amount.
Will Remote still "Control" the larger music collection on Apple TV or your computer?)
    2. Will iPod Wifi work on a patio outside a home to control Apple TV inside the home?
    thank you in advance, Tom

Remote is a way to control iTunes on either your computer or Apple TV using a WiFi connection. See this article for complete instructions.

I would like to know which app/software in MAC gives us the same feature that is provided by System Restore in Windows, and how does that work.

Time Machine is one such program, although it is a recursive backup program which offers limited archive capability, based on the capacity of the backup destination, and it requires you set it up before you start editing your files.   Some programs are also Versions aware, which offers a kind of restore capability by file.  Again needs to be setup before you start editing.
    Just a for-your-info:
Mac is not an acronym, it is a nickname for Macintosh.

Itunes 11.1.5 (MacBook Pro,OS 10.6.8) will not sync new apps with iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.6 and gives grayed out "install" no message?  How does one work around this?

Just reboot your laptop... While its rebooting try to reboot your phone also by holding the home and power buttonn for 10-15 seconds...When your phone is turned off try to connect it to iTunes and it will recognize your phone in recovery mode.
If you have the .ipsw file for iOS 7.0.6 saved in your desktop then in itunes press shift and click on Restore.
Select the ipsw file and let it restore.
If you dont have it downloaded then simply click on restore.
    I hope it works
    Cheers !
