IPhoto library import issue - answer can't be found anywhere else

Hi, just downloaded the trial of Aperture. I am attempting to import my iPhoto library and regardless of whether the location is maintained as references to the iPhoto library or set to the Aperture library when I click import nothing actually imports.
I have checked the iPhoto settings and all seems to be set correctly and also the online seminars and discussions but still no answer. Would it be because I am using the trial version?

Do a little test to make sure you've got your iPhoto library correct. In Aperture go to File>Import>Images. With the {X} set pm Local Files, navigate to the iPhoto library you are using. Then you should see a list of all of your Albums, and if you click on Library, you will see your Events. You can import a few (I would suggest just setting "Store Files" to "In their current location" to avoid duplication) Folders or Events and then see if they appear in Aperture. This is in fact how I store my 40K image library. I keep it all in iPhoto and reference just the albums I need to work on from Aperture.

Moved iPhoto Library - Some file originals can't be found.

I have G5 iMac running Leopard and iLife 06. I moved the contents of my Pictures folder to a partition of an external hard drive (formatted as Extended (Journalled)), as the iMac's HD is getting cramped. When I first ran iPhoto, I got a message saying library couldn't be found (expected) and located the new location of the library on the external drive. iPhoto opens, but starts telling me that it can't find originals of certain files (which happen to be movies from my digital still camera in the same folders as photos. It tries to find many, many of these files - and I am unable to locate any of them using the dialog box in iPhoto. But I can find them via the finder quite easily. What's up with this?

This is the main reason I never recommend using iPhoto in referenced mode.
iPhoto tracks the location of the files by their path, and by moving the Pictures Folder you've changed the path. That's why iPhoto cannot find the files, and worse, because they are movie files iPhoto 6 will not be operational until it tracks them down.
Some things to try:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this creates a new library and leaves your old one untouched it won't make anything worse.

Some comments on running a referenced library:
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty. I would like to do this just to reorganize the photos between the two. I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.

Tell us more, please. I am not quite sure, what you want to do and how you are using Aperture and iPhoto?
Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto are you using?
Do you have separate photo libraries for Aperture and iPhoto, or are you opening your iPhoto libraries in Aperture?
I have Iphoto library in Apeture.
Did you import an iPhoto library into Aperture? And now you are seeing a section "iPhoto Library" in the Aperture projects list in the Inspector?
Events and albums you imported from iPhoto (Import > Library > Some iPhoto Library) will be imported as Aperture projects and albums, and they will behave exactly as other Aperture projects and albums.

You can drag images from any project in Aperture to other projects and that will move (not duplicate) the images and all its versions to that project. And when you drag all images from the project to another project, the remaining project will be empty and can be deleted. (Caution: Photos that you have hidden in iPhoto will not be visible in Aperture. If you are not sure, if you have hidden photos, open the library again in iPhoto and unhide all photos).

There should be no problem with moving all photos from the same years to the same projects. You can also drag projects in "Projects" view on top of each other. That will merge them.
You could also define smart albums in Aperture to search for images taken at a specific period of time:
File > New > Smart album:
Then, in the Smart Settings HUD, click "Add Rule" and add a Date or Calendar rule.
For example, to find all images taken in 2010, use a rule "Date > Capture Year is > 2010"
To search for Photos taken at a specific date or at several dates, use a "calendar" rule. This way, you do nat have to type the date, but can pick it from a mini calendar.

Is there any chance you launched iPhoto while the external hard drive was not available? If so you may have created a virtual EHD - if so unmount your EHD and in the finder go menu ==> go to folder == /Volumes and if you see your EHD there drag it to the desktop - then remount it and launch iPhoto and see if you see both libraries

The folder "iPhoto Library backup 1/2007" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

When I try to view my iPhoto backup I get the error: "The folder “iPhoto Library backup 1/2007” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
I tried opening the Get Info box and changing my access from no access to read only, authenticated with current and old admin passwords but access does not change.

In that case reset the ownership and permissions on the iPhoto Library as follows:
1 - download and launch BatChmod .
2 - drag the iPhoto Library into the BatChmod window.
3 - set the ownership and privileges settings to that shown in this screenshot:

Update iPhoto Library Import

I imported my iPhoto Library previously with Aperture 1.5 as referenced files.
Since upgrading to Aperture 2, I have added new albums to iPhoto. These changes are not reflected in the iPhoto Library import in my Aperture Library. Since I have some versions linked to photos in some of the albums, I'd like to update that tree in place. Is this possible?
Importing iPhoto Library again just results in another, separate import.

I'm afraid the relationship between iPhoto and Aperture is not dynamic, and therefore they do not read each other's libraries. I don't think the idea of using the two in conjunction with each other has been considered - after all, is there something that Aperture does that iPhoto doesn't - and then some? I suspect that Import iPhoto Library command is there to help folks migrate from iPhoto to Aperture, and that thereafter Aperture is the primary organiser. Moving versions back to iPhoto is much more straightforward.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Settings>General>Software Update is only available on iPad with IOS 5 and above.
If you are using IOS 4, you need to connect to iTune (computer) to update software.

IPhone 4 and iPhoto 9 import issue

I just bought an iPhone 4 to replace my iPhone 3GS a few days ago. I finally had a chance to try its camera this weekend. Much to my surprise, all the photos I imported into iPhoto 9 on my MacBook Pro lost their XIF and geotag data once they landed in my iPhoto 9 library. I deleted the photos from my iPhone 4 so I couldn't go back to verify that the information was there. So tonight, I went out for a walk and I shot a few more photos with my iPhone 4. Instead of importing them into iPhoto 9, I used Image Capture to import them from my iPhone 4 into my MBP's Pictures folder. Then I checked and all the XIF and geotag data survived the transfer. I then imported the photos into iPhoto 9 by dragging them onto its icon in the Dock. I then was able to view the XIF and geotag data from within iPhoto 9.
So my question is, why can't iPhoto 9 import the XIF and geotag data in photos directly from the iPhone 4? Is there any way I can fix this via some optional setting or am I do I need to wait for Apple to resolve this issue?

I don't have any problem importing photos from my iPhone 4 with iPhoto '09 (v 8.1.2)--it just works, so I really don't know what might be going wrong. I import by selecting my iPhone 4 in the iPhoto Devices and then select the ones I want to import and click on import selected. It has never failed to also import the EXIF data including the geolocation/camera info.

IPhoto 6 - Import issue, hangs at end

Folks, any help with this would be much appreciated.
I installed iLife 06 and all went well, other than the "recovered photos" issue which others have mentioned - no biggie as there were only 3.
But I have a problem now when importing from disc (HD or CD) - in that the import goes ahead, but freezes at the end. iPhoto doesn't freeze - you can look at folders / the library etc.. while the import process is hanging - and interestingly the library does include the photos within the import which has hung.
The import will hang for ages (hours, not seconds), and I can't stop it using the stop import button, nor can I quit iPhoto (hoping it will tidy up).
After 30mins+ of waiting, a couple of times, I've force-quit iPhoto. When opening again, the pics aren't in the library - but looking with the finder they do all exist in the originals folder, and the data folder.
A total rebuild of the library fails to include the pics.
Anyone else had this? I'm a pretty vanilla user - I haven't mucked about in my old iPhoto 5 library at all etc...
One related question - the following files are in my iPhoto Library - judging by their dates (I installed iLife on Jan 24) and names, are some old iPhoto 5 files?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The albums folder is a carryover from the V4 days and is no longer useful. You can trash it. Albums are now identified and linked within the AlbumData.xml file with no aliases being used any more.
The Library6.temp is not normally in a library folder. It's probably left over from one of your forced quits and can be deleted.
How much free space do you have on your HD? Have you tried rebuilding the library? Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. I'd select the first three options.

IPhoto Library Copy Issues

Hello all,
I'm having some issues copying (backing up) my iPhoto library to an external disk and I really hope somebody can help!
I usually make a monthly backup of my iPhoto library to an external drive and did so before going on vacation a few weeks ago. It's always copied with no problems whatsoever. I just came back from vacation and added about 25GB of new photos (long vacation!) and the only thing I did differently with my new imported photos was that I used HoudahGeo to add GPS data to my new photos. I'm not sure if that would cause a problem, but the library seems to be functioning fine when I use it.
I went to make a backup of my iPhoto library to my usual Mac OS Journaled external disk (A Western Digital 3TB 3.5" drive in a Firewire 800 cradle), but the transfer stalled (or at least severely slowed down) at around 1.4GB and the timer went from several hours up to several days. I thought that was strange, so I canceled the transfer. I tried a different disk (a Seagate 320GB drive), but same thing so I went back tried my original drive again. No luck. I tested my drive by copying another large file (iTunes library) and it copied with no problem. Strange, I thought.
I repaired disk permissions on Mac OSX and copied again, but it didn't seem to help. I then repaired disk permissions on iPhoto using the repair menu, but no difference there either. Then I repaired the iPhoto library using the last option on the repair menu, but it didn't seem to help either! It always stalls around 1.4GB and I cancel.
I thought that maybe it was a Finder issue, so in the end I used terminal (cp -R) to copy the library and that worked, but the size of the finished library file is much bigger than what my finder is currently reporting for the original. It's 551GB vs. the original 289GB.
My software is up to date with: Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and iPhoto 9.5.1.
If somebody can help me, I'd be so grateful! I'm moving back to America soon and want to sell my iMac here and get a new one back home. I need to be able to move this iPhoto library to an external drive since I destroyed my pre-vacation backup when I cancelled my fist copy attempt!

This is a finder issue, copying from disk to disk is a finder operation.
One way around it is to use a back up app like Chronosync to make the copy for you - that will deal with permissions kludges and so on.
Going forward, copying the whole library every time as a back up is - as I'm sure you've noticed - slow and tedious. Consider Using an app that will do incremental back ups. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Where is the iPhoto library stored and how can I browse to it in Finder? The "Photos" option is not showing up on the left hand side.

I created an app using Automator to batch resize my photos. When I take photos with my iPhone 4s the resolution is so big I can't upload them to a web site, so I can select all the photos in an event and resize them down. It's too time consuming to open each one in Preview and resize it manually. This little app works perfectly!
Here's the only thing I'd like to change - when the app starts up it asks which photos I want to resize. I'd love it to default to the iPhoto library so I can choose the most recent event. But I can't for the life of me find it! Normally there's a choice on the left hand side that says Photos and in the automator finder window, it's not showing up. I've looked through all the folders I can think of and can't find it.

You are not using iPhoto properly and are in danger of losing your photos
iPhoto is a SQP database application and there are NO user servicable parts in the database (by default the iPhoto library) It is extremely important that you NEVER make any changes of any sort to the content (or structure) of the iPhoto library
The only safe (and suppoprted) way to resize photo is to select them and export using the various esize options in teh export dialogue and use those resized photos - this is a bathc process and does not involve Preview nor does it involve seperate processing for each photo

IPhoto has hidden my iPhoto Library- photos there, but can't locate LIBRARY

*Here's a bit of a strange one!* I have iPhoto 7.1 (not yet 7.1.1) on my PowerBook G4-12" and last week I imported 6700 photos from my Kodak EasyShare Collection (which had a total of 16,000+) - and it all worked great.
*I setup about 20 EVENTS-*- some with 4 photos-- some with 800! I transferred 6098 photos to my iPod Touch (16gb) and SUPER!! +(OK the iTouch puts the first dated photo in each event as the KEY photo-- doesn't accept the "KEY PHOTO" I assigned in iPhoto-- but otherwise super).+
*OK SO TODAY:* I have 132 new photos to import from my digital camera. _FORGOT TO SAY THIS:_ The 29 gb iPhoto Library is located on an *external 48 gb HD (LaCie 300 gb with 3 partitions - on the 48 gb partition).*
So I imported the photos directly to iPhoto and all the events are gone and just the new 132 photos (1 event).
WHAT?!?!?!!!!!!!!!
So I then plug-in the HD to my MacBook and opent iPhoto 7.1.1 with the option key down and choose the iPhoto Library on the External HD and all is there, all OK-- Whew!
I now open iPhoto 7.1 on the PBG4 and the photos are there!! - *but the external HD is not connected!!* Somehow iPhoto has transferred them to the internal 100gb HD on the PBG4-- BUT WHERE?!?!? Even with a SPOTLIGHT or EASY FIND search, _I cannot locate the iPhoto Library!!!_ I even deleted the photos that were similar in the Kodak EasyShare folder thinking it was referencing them, but nope-- it still opened with 132 photos and where they are located, I have no idea!
I would like to transfer these 132 photos to the MAIN iPhoto Library on the 48gb HD - but I don't know where they are! (I've gone to where it should be-- in Users/Steve/Pictures....)
But I see them!
Can I DELETE this single event? But what then, is that "invisible Library" still about?
At this time, I really don't want to connect the HD to the PBG4 since I don't want to risk it corrupting the 6700 photos in that Library.
(((Of course I'll backup that iPhoto Library first-- so if I "wreck" one, I'll have a backup))); and of course I have the photos themselves via the wonderful Kodak EasyShare program which plays videos in slide shows (but without "EVENTS" or the easy ability to transfer to the iTouch)--

Do a search on the PB for a file titles "Library6.iPhoto". Every library has one and you can find the library by finding that file. Once you find the library open it like this and drag out the Originals folder to the desktop.
Now connect the external HD to the PB, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to Find Library and open the one on the external HD. Now you can drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window to get those 132 photos into that library. When done delete the library and originals folder from the PB.
What may have happened is that iPhoto was launched with the external HD disconnected and, not finding the library, created a new one. Using iPhoto Library Manager to manage and open your library will avoid that problem as it will tell you that the library is not available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
