Iphoto library in dropbox lost thumbnails

I just put my iphoto library in the dropbox so it can sync and be shared by all computers. The problem is when I open a library it just gives the outline not he picture. When I double click it is still there at high resolution. I t seems it has lost part of the information with this copying ,eg thumbnails. Any way to get this back.
Thanks,
Marc

  • Moved iPhoto library to Dropbox, didn't free up any space on HD

I was running very low on HD space so I moved my 13 gb iPhoto library to Dropbox. After transfering, I opened iPhoto and defined the new photo library as the appropriate Dropbox folder. Everything is working well with iPhoto. All my photos and videos load just fine and the file sources are the Dropbox folder.
The problem: my HD has barely any more space than before. It's hard to tell precisely because the free space measure is dynamic, but it looks as if moving the library cleared about 1 gb at most, and certainly nothing even close to 13 gb.
I've emptied the trash on my computer, with no change. I have searched forum discussions, but I can't figure it out.
    I appreciate any help!

In the latest version of dropbox, you'll select the icon from the magic menu in upper right at the bottom of the list is the "cog wheel" icon.  Click it, and select "Preferences" Under "Advanced" click "Selective Sync"  You will see all the folders (By default all of them) that are synced locally to your internal drive as well as in the cloud.   By unchecking the folder that your iPhoto library is in,  it will no longer store that 13 GB file on your hard drive, but instead keep it at DropBox only.   Hope that explanation makes sense.   I have over 110 GB of Dropbox and am considering moving my 30 GB iPhoto there permanently.   I'm on too many machines and editing all over the place so an external drive could not keep up with me

  • Move iPhoto library from dropbox

Hi community!   I made the mistake of storing my iphoto library on dropbox, but I now want to put it back on my harddrive.  How do I do this?

iPhoto could not locate the library.
It was in the Dropbox folder on your hard drive, right? Where did you drag the library to when you dragged it from the Dropbox folder?
If you know where it is not launch iPhoto with the Option key selected and select the library in the window that opens:
Or click on the Choose button, navigate to where the library is located and select it.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library with DropBox

I moved my iPhoto library to DropBox in order to have a complete online backup of iPhoto (in addition to my local Time Machine backup and my SuperDuper bootable backup). The backup took a while since I have a large iPhoto library (20,000 photos, about 80 GB). What happened was that the size of the iPhoto library doubled on DropBox to 160 GB. There are a number of reasons for this (I found it too late), primarily because DropBox doesn't handle the symlinks well and creates duplicate copies of the photos in Folders called Originals, Modified, and Masters. Also my computer slowed down when I added a lot of photos to iPhoto, as it was syncing literally a couple of thousand files for every 100 pictures I added.
It seems like what I could do as an alternative to backing up the entire library is to just back up the Masters Folder to DropBox. However, I can't move the Masters Folder out of iPhoto to DropBox without breaking the iPhoto Library structure. I think I could use a symlink from the Masters Folder to DropBox, but I am not exactly sure how to do this (or whether this would work). I could also do some kind of automator script to copy the Masters folder to DropBox, but this doens't seem very efficient. I have scoured the web forums on this issue, but just don't see a good solution. It seems like a pretty fundamental issue to people with a lot of photos in iPhoto.

And the answer is that so far no one has found a good solution to cloud backup for the iPhoto library that I have seen here - If you want only the photos you could copy the masters folder to DropBox and then use image capture to get your photos off your camera adding each batch to DB and then importing to iPhoto
I go at it differently - two daily backups (Time Machine hourly and Carbon Copy Cloner making a bootable clone of my system daily) plus an occasional TM backup to an off site drive (at our vacation home) and rotating through three 32 GB SD cards so I have a year or more of the original photos on SD cards at all times
TD uses SmugMug to backup his photos along with a similar but more disciplined off site backup

  • IPhoto library won't load thumbnails or pics

A couple of months back, I noticed that some thumbnails in my iPhoto library were not being loaded (maybe 10% of folders), and a number of photo's inside the folder were blank, and would also not load.  The folder thumbnails would flicker on and off when scrolling down the folders, and the folders themselves show the 'reflection' of the folder pic in front of it, but not on the actual, folder.
I then noticed that some folders had totally disappeared, so I restored from my Time Machine from a couple of months previous.  Missing folders re-appeared, but I still had blank thumbnails, and pics unable to open.  I tried the 4 iPhoto repair options, but it made no difference.
I then restored from an even older Time Machine backup, but now, most of my thumbnail pics are missing (about 90%), and I can't open most of my photos.  I don't understand how this is happening, as when the backup was made, the iPhoto library was fine.
I'm now beginning to think that my hard drive on my Mac may be corrupt, and I'm restoring to a faulty drive.  Can anyone help?
I'm on OSX 10.6 (I think), and it may be worth noting that I tried updating the OS 2 months ago, but it crashed my Mac, and I had to restore.
    Thanks
    Lee

    Apologies for the delayed response.
    I'm running iPhoto V9.5.1 (902.17) on OSX 10.9.3.

  • Upgrading iPhoto Library Manager and Lost folders...

I've been using iPhoto Library Manager (ver. 3.4.?) and iPhoto 8 with most photos on an external LaCie drive. I've just upgraded to iPhoto Library Manger ver. 3.5.6. I didn't know that a new version of that program would present an empty library list. I also had a good-old fashioned folder, on the LaCie drive that contained photos. After the upgrading, I cannot find that folder. I think that may have to do with iPhoto Library Manager creating a new library inside that plain-jane folder. Does anyone have experience with this program and how to find lost folders and photos?

Thank you and say "hi" to beautiful Ireland. My family stills farms east of Galway.
Let me explain further. In the last version of iPhoto Library Manager, before I upgraded to a newer version, when opened, it showed in the iPhoto Libraries list many libraries, most on the external drive and one on the HD of the Mac.
When I would select one of the libraries on the external drive (ed), then I would see what each of those libraries contained including several which had not only jpg photos but some with a "folder" containing those jpg photos. I could then open those libraries or even those "folders" and access the photos with iPhoto.
After upgrading iPhoto LM, the libraries list was blank. I began populating it again by selecting "Add Library" and selecting from the list that occurred. Here's where the mystery began. There was a "folder," not a library that came up on that list of photos on the ed. That folder contained hundreds of jpg photos. When I clicked on that folder, iLM said that there was no library in that folder and provided a button to create one. I did that. Since that point, the folder and its contained jpg photos have disappeared but there is "library" on the iPM list window that wasn't there before. When I select it to open in iPhoto, it shows there are no photos.
I hope this may not be as bewildereing to you as to me.

  • Help with 'unlocking' iPhoto Library! SO LOST!

I was a PC user all my life and recently I decided to switch to Mac. I'm still figuring things out and for the most part I've got the hang of it, with one exception...iPhoto. I'm not having problems with iPhoto or using it for that matter, my problem is this; I want to be able to upload photos using Facebooks photo uploader instead of having to upload the entire album using the iPhoto uploader. My next problem is that I just purchased Pixelmator and it won't let me open photos from my iPhoto library. The only photos I can access are the ones from Photo Booth. So, how do I 'unlock' my iPhoto library so that I can actually access my photos? HELP!!!

To up load selected photos to Facebook (or any other supported service) select the photo(s) and click on the service name in the tool bar - it will create an album in the source pane on the left and up load to the selected service. Any changes made to the album on the service or in iPhoto will be synced so they always stay the same
TO access your photos in any open/attach window look in the lower left hand corner under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto (*the media browser) - click here for a discussion on the many correct and safe ways to access your iPhoto library photos.
and it would be a worthwhile investment of time to take the iphoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - they are very helpful and will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails

  • Lost thumbnails in iphoto 6.0.6

I am copying this post by another person; it is exactly what has happened to me. I tried to do what TD suggested without any results. Is TD referring to the resizing indicator of the library window? I don't see any "+" on the left side of the window. Jim Henderson
All of a sudden, in iPhoto I seem to be on a Slideshow page and can't get back to the usual default main Library page. Where I am, there's an oval at the bottom that says "Search," and the pictures are large, one at a time, not the little thumbnails.
If I click "Play" it goes to a Slideshow box. If I click the little Edit icon on the bottom of the slideshow page I seem to be on, I'll get some Thumbnails on top but it's not the same as getting back to my Library.
I can't organize or edit if I'm not in my iPhoto Library where all the Thumbnails are located. I can't email my photos or edit them or move them or whatever, except from this random Slideshow page.
The usual default Library page I'm looking for has a "Done" square at the bottom to click as well as Left and Right arrows. I can't find this page anymore.
I can see my albums and folders listed on the left side but if I click them, I only get the large pictures, not the Thumbnails. I want my Thumbnails!!!!!
Help, please! I'm computer stupid (as you can no doubt tell) so don't use technical language.

Have a look at the bottom right of the iPhoto Window. See a Slider there? Drag it left.

  • Use Dropbox as iPhoto library location?

I need access to my image files from several computers, and am wondering whether I could simply locate my iPhoto library on Dropbox, and access it as needed. I am, and would continue, backing up to a remote hard drive, so the Dropbox would not be the only location of my iPhoto library.

You can use Dropbox to run iPhoto from multiple computers but, unless you want to purchase additional dropbox space, the library's size must be less than 2 GB in size. See Old Toad's Tutorial #20 - "Syncing" a Small iPhoto Library between Multiple Macs with Dropbox for more info. Be sure to read the warning in the tutorial.
You must allow sufficient time for changes made on computer A to be synced to computers B and C (they must be up and online to do so).

  • Lost images - need to rebuild iPhoto library

I was recently in the apple store for a repair and was told that I can 'rebuild' my iPhoto library to find lost images. I can't seem to find anything in the help section on doing this. I can't remember if I've changed the directories, but I don't believe so. I've only moved the iPhoto folder to a hard drive and then back again. I can't think of anything else out of the ordinary.
Thoughts, suggestions on finding lost pictures / rebuilding the library?
    Thanks

Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Need help restoring iphoto and iphoto library

Hi, I have been trying for over a year to restore my iphoto library which was lost when my hard drive died. Since I often go months between attempts, I kind of forget what we have already tried. I think we have tried rebuilding it as suggested in other posts. When we have done this, I think we have ended up with about 6 copies because when we search in spotlight, it says we have 19,196 jpgs!
When the hard drive died we had about 3000 photos. I believe all of them are still there in the mom and dad user, and they seem to be undistorted-yeah! However, when I click on the iphoto icon, I only get the task bar, no window opens up, and almost all the options are gray.
So basically, if I want to find a photo, I have to go through a long path, locate the thumbnail, drag it to the desktop and then I can use it.
I have read many of the similar posts, but I was still unsure what to try first in my situation. I imagine I need to get rid of about 16,000 copies of my original photos before I do anything else.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to make a family album, and I really need those photos!
Thank you all in advance. This is a wonderfully suportive community.
I don't know what version of iphoto I am running (or was running?), but I think it is an older one, since my g4 is several years old, and I don't think I ever purchased ilife. If someone can tell me how to check, I will provide the info.

Hi, thanks again for your reply.
I looked through some of the jpgs from spotlight, and I found at least 1000 that weren't photos, just some weird random stuff I didn't recognize.
Yes, the rebuild did work for awhile, but then it was gone again. It doesn't seem like it lasted very long. Also, I had the same problems others described with all the albums lost, and it seems like there were some photos I thought were lost as well. Like I said, I go months between my attempts to do this because it is so time consuming, so that is why I can't remember all the details.
Anyway, I thought that when I had it restored for a short time that I had backed up my photos, but now I can't find the disks, so maybe I never got around to it. You can bet I will be doing it this time!
For the sake of my book I am trying to get done for Christmas, would it be bad to just search through my jpgs, make a folder of some of them on the desktop, and then import them to shutterfly?
Also, I am wondering if buying the new ilife w/iphoto 8 would be a good idea right now or if it would just make a bigger mess of things? Would it have any way to search for my photos?
Sorry for all the questions. Hopefully if there is a solution, I will be able to get there soon.

  • HT1198 Can I share my iPhoto library with other logons on the same computer

My iMac has three separate logons for members of my family. However, it would be very useful if we call all access the same iPhoto library. Is this possible?

To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using Shared Photo Streams in iCloud, if the privacy implications don't bother you.
There are more drawbacks to Shared Streams, than the privacy problem,Linc. Shared streams, imho, are perfect for showing off a small selection of photos, but nearly all work invested into the iPhoto library will be lost this way. Titles, caption, ratings do not transfer, and once added to the stream, you cannot rearrange the sequence of photos. Edits are no longer reversible.  If several family members are sharing photos this way on the same computer, they will all have to create their own photo libraries, create redundant photos, and have to recreate all the metadata. It is wasteful, if they really want to share a common iPhoto library.
The only practical way to do what you want is to let the two family members who need write access log in to the same account to make changes.
I am curious, Linc. Do you see problems with Apple's own recommendation, that LarryHN linked to -  - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users  ?

  • Have I formated my External Hard drive wrong? Can't get to my iPhoto library.

    Hello,
I have recently rebooted my old iMac 2008, and am attempting to start using it again fro photo editing with iPhoto and Aperture. My photos are on an external Harddrive called MY BOOK. The problem is that neither iPhoto nor Aperture recognices the photo library on my EHD any longer. When I try to open iPhoto with the old library from the EHD, I can see the "package" there, but cannot highlight it.
When I started using the EHD about a year ago, I was recommended to reformat it to Mac OS Extended, which I did. But now, when I look at the EHD in diskutility, I see the hard drive on 2 lines. The top line states:
3 TB WD My book 1130... and format: Mac OS Extended
    The lower line says:
MY BOOK and format: MS-DOS (FAT)
And when I have a look under the info tab in Finder, it says MS-DOS (FAT32)
I suspect I must have done it wrong when I did the original partitioning.... but I was able to use the library from the harddrive, so wasn't aware of the problem.
How am I going about to correct my problem, so that I can read my picture-library again?
    I am using OS X 10.8.5
I have posted this question in the iPhoto forum, but was told that this probably is an OS X problem... can you help?

If you see a message about rebuilding your thumbnail cache
Over time, iPhoto can become less efficient at accessing the photos in your library. Rebuilding the cache can help iPhoto display your photos faster, and can also resolve issues such as thumbnails that appear to be dimmed or missing.
After upgrading iPhoto, you might see a message asking if you want to rebuild your thumbnail cache. You can choose whether to do it then or come back to it later.
Important:  You should back up your iPhoto library before rebuilding your thumbnail cache.
    Hide
    To rebuild your thumbnail cache:
If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Hold down the Option and Command keys while you open iPhoto (click the iPhoto icon in the Dock). The Rebuild Photo Library window opens.
Select at least these two checkboxes:
Rebuild the photos’ small thumbnails: This option rebuilds only the small versions of the thumbnails, such as those that appear in the photo browser when you are creating a book or slideshow.
Rebuild all of the photos’ thumbnails: This option rebuilds all the thumbnails associated with a photo, including the small ones and the thumbnails that appear in a photo album or an Event.
For information about the remaining checkboxes, visit the iPhoto Support websiteand search for “rebuilding the iPhoto library.”
Click Rebuild.Rebuilding the thumbnail cache may take several minutes.

  • IMovie '11 slow to load at every launch (large iPhoto library to blame?)

I'm running 10.6.7 on a late 2010 13" macbook pro.  I have a very large iphoto library (over 200GB) that is full of movies made with various digital cameras.  I do have a casio AVI video codec installed into quicktime as a plugin, fyi, but all the movies and clips open fine within iPhoto when I double click them.
The first time I opened up iMovie it said that it needed to scan the iphoto library and then create thumbnails.  This took several hours, but finally completed.  When it finished, I could see all of my movies as events in the iPhoto Videos section of the Event Library within iMovie.
The problem I'm having is that every time I launch iMovie it takes 5 minutes or more to actually open up.  The program launches and then I get the spinning beach ball.  Opening activity monitor and shows iMovie as "unresponsive" and there is massive disk read activity for a long time.  It seems like it's scanning my drive and looking at a LOT of the files. Gigabytes of data is read.  After a while, it finally settles down and I can see all the events.  All of my clips appear to play fine within iMovie. But it makes using the program somewhat an awful experience as everytime I open iMovie I have to wait such a long time.
I tried trashing the preference file for iMovie and it asked me to recreate all the iPhoto library thumbnails.  But I was back to square one aftewards, the same thing... long, long startup time.
Any thoughts or helpful ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

iMovie remembers which you worked with last time you used it. If this is your iPhoto Library it will load all the thumbnails from iPhoto.
To manage your movie clips yourself you can make "events" for them.
    1) Make a new event from the File menu.
    2) Drag in the clips from iPhoto to that event.
    3) Wait until iMovie has made thumbnails for these clips only.
When you quit iMovie it will remember that you worked with this event the last time and it will only load those thumbnails. Much faster. And you can create a new event for the next batch of raw footage.
The downside of this is that you get some videos duplicated so you have them in both iPhoto and iMovie on your disk.
