IPhoto Library in iCloud

I have almost 12,000 photos in my iPhoto library. Is it possible and practical to have my library in iCloud. I do have a backup copy on an external HD.
But I am going to have to move the library off of my iMac because iPhoto is getting very beachballish.

No
It must be on a local drive with a wired connection
You can use it on an external hard drive

  • HT6378 How to upload iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library?

    Hi,
I am having a MBP mid 2012 w/ Yosemite along w/ iPhone and iPad, all running 8.1. After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
On the iCloud, All Photos folder just shows a fraction of what's on my Mac iPhoto library, probably the most recent pictures I have taken and there's no sign of any automatic uploading as suggested by all Apple Ads...
    Thanks
    S

After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
iPhoto on your Mac is not supposed to work with iCloud Photo Library. The new "Photos" app for the mac will be able to do it. The release of this app  has been announced for "Early next year".
For now, only your mobile devices can upload to iCloud Photo Library.  So you have to upload your photos to the mobile devices to get them into iCloud Photo Library Beta.
That is not easy, because you cannot upload from your iPhoto library to your iOS 8 devices using iTunes with  iCloud Photo Library Beta enabled on the device. It will disable syncing photos with iTunes. As long as you are using  iCloud Photo Library Beta, mail the Photos to your devices or upload using Photo Stream.

  • HT201238 How to transition a 1.5TB iPhoto Library to iCloud Photos when the limit is only 1TB?

My iPhoto library is over 1.5TB.  Since iCloud Photos has a limit of 1TB, what is the best way for me to transition my iPhoto library to iCloud Photos?

There is a contact us link at the bottom of every page of these forums - if you have Apple Care you can call them - you ask at an Apple Store
But again until the product is released no one knows and Apple does not speculate on unreleased products
If the released product has a limit smaller than your library then you will have to make multiple libraries or only put selected photos on iCloud
And that is a giant library - I have over 70,0 with over half 16 MP RAW images and my library is only 389 GB - are you looking at the size of the phtos in iPhoto or the size of the disk file which is much large since it includes multiple versions, database files and other items?

  • IPhoto Library on iCloud

    Hi,
my Mac Book is running out of space because of all my pictures in my iPhoto library. Is there an option of iCloud to transfer my iPhoto library to iCloud, so that all my photos are stored in the web and if I use iPhoto I need to connect through the internet with my iPhoto library? This would really help me to get free space again.
    Thanks, best regards
    Christoph

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You cannot store the iPhoto library on iCloud. However, you can store your iPhoto library onto an external disk to get free space on the hard disk

  • Can I upload entire iPhoto library to iCloud?

Greetings. Just bought MacBook Pro. Trying to recreate dynamic replica of my iMac desktop. Beefed up iCloud storage, ditto Dropbox...can I upload my entire iPhoto library to iCloud? And, if not, can anyone explain why not? Or know of an alternative method? Thanks in advance

    No.
Because that's not a feature of either iCloud or iPhoto.
There is no alternative. Any folks who have tried running a Library from the cloud find that it is appallingly slow and there is a very high risk of data corruption as the online servers haven't a clue how to deal with the library.
Use an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Okay?

  • Time capsule stuck restoring iPhoto library from iCloud drive

I bought a new macbook pro. I used Airport Extreme Time Capsule to upload everything from old mac to new mac. Everything worked fine except on thing. My iPhoto library wouldn't transfer. It showed up in the new iCloud drive with a cloud and an arrow pointing down. I then tried to restore a previous version from time capsule (again it had been stored in iCloud drive), but it has been stuck on "copying "iPhoto library.photolibrary" to "cloud drive"" for many many hours. My iCloud drive has 190GB free and my iPhoto library is 20GB. Can anyone figure out what is wrong.

I am restoring wirelessly again to note the error message, it still has 15 hours to go!
You don't remember what the message was?  Not even roughly?
Hint: when you get an error message, take a screenshot of it so you'll know what it says.
My network is just a wireless ADSL Router connecting my Mac & TC. If I want to connect via ethernet cable, do I need to connect TC with Router?
Either connect both your Mac and the TC via Ethernet, or connect them directly.
because connecting Mac & TC did not work.
What do you mean?  What happened?  Error messages?  If so, what?
Can I connect using the ethernet cable now while the restore is on to speed up the restore?
Yes.   Once it's connected, and on, make sure Ethernet is above WIFI in System Preferences > Network.  That will insure that OSX will use Ethernet when both are active.
If it isn't, click the "gear" icon at the bottom and select Set Service Order.  On the next window, drag Ethernet to the top.

How can I save my iphoto library to the cloud?

You can't. That's not a feature of either iPhoto or iCloud.

  • How can i transfer entire iphoto library to icloud?

I dont want to back up iphoto collection, i would like to be able to access photos other than just shared or photostream. Please help.

There is not yet any reliable cloud service that can host an iPhoto library offline and let you access it efficiently.
This will be possible, when the new MacOS X 10.10 Yosemite is released, plus the new Photos.app currently under development.
With Yosemite and Photos.app you will be able to keep an  iCloud Photo Library, probably early next year.
The problem is, that an iPhoto library is a database, and not just a collection of photos. Accessing it over network may corrupt the database, if the transactions are interrupted by network dropouts or access from several computers is not synchronised. You cannot simply put an iPhoto library onto an arbitrary cloud storage and sync it there, if the underlying service does not protect the database integrity.

  • Same photos between iPhoto library and iCloud. Detected as duplicated wrongly

I use Gemini to clear duplicate photos in iPhoto library, it works well on my macbook pro, however when i run Gemini on my another mac, it found my photos in iPhoto library are duplicate with iCloud, which is wrong, and it cleans all pics in my iCloud(photo stream and shared photo).
I have the same settings in two macs, as well the Gemini.

I agree wholeheartedly  with léonie.  Uninstall Gemini and try another duplicate finder.
These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • IPhoto library to iCloud

Is there a way I can store my iPhoto library in the cloud and be able to easily pull photos from it over wifi?

    No
You can share photos with shared PhotoStreams in the current version of iPhoto - but the iPhoto library must be on a local, wired connection on a hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
And in any case iCloud is not a place to store anything - but if it were you could not have the iPhoto library there

  • Can I house me entire iPhoto Library on iCloud drive

My iPhoto library is 9GB of space taken up on my Mac Book Pro 2011 13"
Can I house my iPhoto Library entirely on iCloud Drive to regain that space or does it need to be on the Mac if I want to grab a pic or two for some small copy/paste situation, or to make a slideshow or burn a DVD?
Or is the size insignificant to make any read write faster if I did house it on Cloud drive or another external drive on my work desk.

Thank you both, now that is a perspective I did not have and the help I needed to sort out this buggy issue in my head.
And i did not know that what's on the cloud drive is still on my Mac, and now that I think of it, THAT'S A DARN GOOD THING and the reason and need for the cloud had just become more clear to me. I was thinking anything I put on cloud drive went there from my Mac and was not on my Mac any longer.
Age does not necessarily equate to wisdom, that's why I need this Apple Community.
    Thanks to both of you.

  • How do I back up all of my iphoto library to iCloud and not be limited by photo stream?

I need to be able to back up my iphoto library of well over 1000 photographs going back seven years. I note that Photostream limits the number of photographs and the duration for which they are stored. How can I back up the entire library, even if I have to pay?

I'm with Paul.  I'd recommend you buy external hard drive (or two) and copy over your iPhoto library.  Or use Time Machine and back-up the photos along with your music, documents, etc.  Keep the hard drive at work (in case of a home fire, flood, or theft).  Every couple months bring the hard drive home to update the back-up and then bring it back to work the next morning.
If you also want to do an online backup, also check out http://www.carbonite.com
It will be much slower to upload than Dropbox, but less expensive.  It's $60/per year for unlimted storage, but it will only back-up your internal drive at that price point.
edit: I just did a quick search and noticed that people have been having problems with Carbonite using too much processor power. There are other online back-up services, you may want to do some research.

  • HT4859 managing iphoto library for icloud

how to chose what photos I want to be backed up to Icloud rather than the whole library

The backup to icloud includes all photos in the camera roll.  You can't select which of those do and do not back up.
    Some added advice:
You should always sync photos from an iOS device to iPhoto or Aperture and then save them in a permanent album.  Never trust an icloud backup, since it may not save all photos, only those on the Camera Roll - but even then, many users have lost photos trying to restore the backup.  If you can't get them back from a restore and they are not saved on a computer, then they are gone.

  • Can I backup my iPhoto library to iCloud, Can I backup my iPhoto library to iCloud

I would like to backup all my photos to icloud not just photo stream. Is that possible. If not I upgraded to 55GB for nothing.

sorry but you upgraded to 55gb for nothing. it doesn't hold all of your photos, only a specific amount for a specific amount of time. during the original keynote they made it clear that it was meant to stream photos taken on an ios device to each other and to your pc. on your pc (whether your os is windows or os x) it'll keep it on that machine permanently (unless you delete it) but on your ios device it'll only keep it on there for a certain amount of time unless you decide to save it to the device. its not like the gallery function of MobileMe
