Iphoto library is greyed out

I created a second iphoto folder on a separate portable hard drive and moved my holiday snaps into it to give me more space on my mac hard drive, but when trying to get some photos for my screen saver the iphoto library is greyed out and I can't select it.  Is there a way to select it or change it from being greyed out?

Select system preferences in the dock.  Desktop and screensaver, choose folder, jenniferprice/pictures/iphoto library.
Don't choose Folder.
Instead, click on the + at the bottom and look for the Media heading on your left. Select iPhoto there.

Choose it from where?  See this user tip by Terence Devlin for how to access photos for use outside of iPhoto: How to Access Files in iPhoto
Have you tried dragging the photo from the iPHoto window into the open Word document window?

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

  • I get this alert when opening iPhoto.  "The photo "4ea09cdb.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." When I select "find photo" library is greyed out.

I have to either hit cancel about 100 times to allow me to get into iphoto.  I think this may have to do with photos I have edited over time where the original no longer exists but only the .edited.jpg...
    OSX 10.8.2
    iPhoto 9.4.2

these do not matchup - they can not all be correct
Yes, I found the Masters file and they all appear to be there...
Some of the files in question say "The alias “AtlantisPhoto_01_2.jpg” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."  when I try to access in the master file.
It was checked when I went into preferences already.
It sounds like you have unchecked the copy option sometime and imported photos while it was unchecked that no longer have the originals available on the same path as they were when imported
We only know what you tell us and answers can only be based on the information you provide
And whjile you are looking inside the iPhoto library be very careful that you do not make any changes of any sort - there are no user servicable parts in it and any changes can destroy your library

    Hi,
Thought I finally should start learning Garageband. A couple of years ago, I bought a couple of jam packs. As I recall, I had them included in GB then. But in this version, the library buttons are greyed out and there's no loops included.
    How do I import them?
I have GB '08 (version 4.1.2) and Mac OS 10.5.7

the library buttons are greyed out and there's no loops included.

  • Itunes library is greyed out

    Hi,
I hope someone can help as this has been driving me crazy the last few days.
I imported some cd's into my itunes library & connected my ipod classic to my laptop (Win 7) expecting it to sync the music, it didn't. The music I imported is visible in my itunes library but is greyed out.
I keep my music on my external (G) drive & itunes points to my G drive correctly i.e. Edit>Preferences>G:>itunes music folder. I'm runnning itunes ver 2.0.1 (this updates automatically). My G drive itunes folder contains all my music folders plus: itunes Library (database file) & Library XML doc file. My C drive itunes folder contains: Album Artwork Folder, itunes Media Folder, itunes Library Extras Folder, itunes Library Genius Folder, itunes Library File & itunes Music Library XML doc file.
I've not experienced any problems before but it appears to have happened since the update.
    Thanks.
    Gary.

I'd try repairing permissions on your main drive. My guess is you'll see a long list of differing iTunes permissions. Also if you have a TM backup of that library from 6 months ago when you put it away you should be able to restore the itl file from that. But I'd try the permission repair first. If that works & iTunes lights up, make sure that it is pointing to the media file in the external drive and that "keep iTunes Media folder organized" & "copy files to iTunes..." are checked. All of these settings are in advanced preferences.
Then run TM (or super duper or something) and back everything up (including the external drive).

  • Nano 4th gen library was greyed out. Tried to access on new laptop. Got pop upasking permission to get access. Deleted library. How Can I retrieve or reverse?

Have a 4th gen, Nano. Original iTunes library was on old computer that no longer works. Was able to access iTunes on new laptop but songs were greyed out tried to get them released w/o success. Got a pop up message requesting permission to allow access for new computer. Entire library vanished and cannot seem to retrieve. Is there any way to retrieve the library? HELP!

If it's slow on startup it would be extensions loading or LaunchDaemons starting up.
You should have a look in:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/Extensions
You can count out anything in your home folder and it shouldn't put anything in /System as that's reserved for Apple.

  • All of my iTunes library is greyed out on my IPod

Some time ago, I downloaded some songs and when I synced them to my iPod, they were greyed out and I couldn't play them on the iPod touch. ( I can still play them in my iTunes library on my computer. )
Today, I had to 'restore' my ipod, so all of my music was wiped. I synced my itunes library to my iPod, and all of the music is there, but it's greyed out and I can't play any of it. None of the 800 songs are able to be played.
I've tried resetting my iPod already and they are still greyed out. I don't think restoring it again will help, as that is what got me this problem.
    what can I do?

You should have de-authorized your mac before reformatting its hard disk.
Authorizing information is stored in a file on your hard disk and might get lost under certain circumstances like mainboard exchange, major hardware changes ...

  • Transitioned to Photos. Now I can't import pictures to my editing software. The Library is greyed out?

I transitioned to Photos and all my photos are there. Everything was fine. I use a program for editing with my Bamboo Tablet and import photos from my library as a layer to the project I'm working on. The program is called ArtRage Studio if that matters. When I am using ArtRage, and I need to import a picture as a layer, i can't. I navigate to the file location of my "library", which I see both the iPhoto Library icon and a Photo Library icon, but I can't select them. I use to be able to just select Pictures like I do in Finder but now this garbage program Photos has screwed everything up. I have to actually launch Photos view anything. I can't view anything in the finder either like I use to.
This is garbage. I know its a longshot that someone also uses ArtRage, but am i missing something ? Why can't I view my location of the photos I have?

The new Photos is an entirely different app than iPhoto was and requires plugins from the 3rd party editor developers to be able to use them to edit photos in the library.  In the meantime we'll need to export the original file to the Desktop, edit it there with the 3rd party app and then import the edited version back into the library as a new photo.
So we're at the mercy of the 3rd party app developers.  I know Pixelator just came out with a new version that can access the Photos library to obtain photos to edit.  But all edits have to be saved to the Desktop and imported as new photos.

  • Somehow my pictures in the iPhoto library are blanked out

I have just been updated my Mac and the iphoto to 11 v. 9.2. I have switched to iCloud and is now using photostream. I had a lot of pics I started streaming and during I was editing the pics. from our vaction. Suddenly I'm told that the iPhoto library has an error and needs to be updated. I let the MAC do so, and then suddenly all my pictures in my iPhoto are blanked out. At this time all my 1000 pics are still not all streamed, but iPhoto it is still streaming though I can't see any pictures in the photolibrary??? I can only see empty squares where the pics were supposed to be. I then check my iPhone and I see that pictures at still streamed from iPhoto. Then I search for my pics in "Finder" and it seems they are still there however I would like to get them back in the same order as before?? Also I made a half made photobook, but the pictures in the book are also blanked out? Can anyone help?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Aperture Library.aplibrary greyed out (relocating library)?

i am setting up a new mac pro and had previously located my aperture library on a disk that was storing databases (as opposed to the disk with the OS on it).
i have decided instead to use a larger HD for the OS drive and to keep all my databases on it. however i am running into a problem i don't understand.
right now in the PICTURES folder on my OS drive i am showing a "Aperture Library.aplibrary" which is GREYED OUT and when i try to overwrite it with the NEW library (370 GB) that is coming from the other "database disk" i am getting some error that says i can't do anything with it because it is in use - even though i have quit out of Aperture. so i went hunting for the offending software, closed Photos App and some other miscellaneous apps and did a restart and go the same thing.
so i decided to just go ahead and copy the NEW library to the OS drive and put it in the Pictures folder names as Aperture Library 2.aplibrary so now this is in the folder along with the /still/ greyed out aplibrary.
any ideas on what i should do here?
presumably i could open Aperture and tell it to use the "2" aplibrary? or is there something mission critical i am missing here that i don't want to mess up? ALSO, is there a correct procedure for relocating an aplibrary? i mean i got confused but i guess normally i should be able to write over an aplibrary and then TELL APERTURE to open the aplibrary of the new location on the OS drive, right (instead of finding it on the other "database" drive)?
    THANKS

sorry, just to be clear. the new mac pro is already set up. i just want to relocate the aplibrary so that i am not using this second "database" drive to store the aperture and other databases on...

  • IPhoto Library got wiped out by itself?

I was trying to reorganize 2 libraries on my external HD, so I switch my iPhoto to external libraries. Then I was using some other apps. Then all I heard was the internal fan going on steroid and within minutes, the computer froze and told me to hard restart my laptop. I reopen iPhoto and it asked me to pick a library and I selected the one on my internal HD. EVERYTHING WAS GONE!! Check the info on Finder, 6.3MB in size. I did a search on any jpg files... nothing from my library.
Is there anyway I can retrieve my photos? All my graduation pics are on it. PLease help!

    D Wo
iPhoto has no way to wipe out a Library. You had a kernal panic.
In the Finder go to the Go Menu -> Go to Folder and enter /Volumes in the window. Can you see another iPhoto Library there? If so, drag it to the desktop.
If not, search for library6.iphoto. This is the main database file, see if it's been mislaid.
File Salvage can scan a disk for erased pics. You'll need to purchase it to recover them.

  • ITunes Music Library mostly greyed out

I have a relatively small iTunes library (2107 songs).  I just synched all of them with my new iPhone 4S and about 85% of the songs are greyed out and won't play.  When I select the iPhone > Music in iTunes on my Mac they're also greyed out.  Yet all is just fine in iTunes itself.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

  • ITunes library file greyed out

I've managed to keep the same iTunes library since 2003, surviving the transition from WinXP to Mac. It (and my music) resided on an external FAT32 USB drive (FAT32) for about a year, and I recently migrated it over to a larger FireWire/USB combo drive formatted FAT32.
Over the past month, I've been accessing the drive (named "SHERRY") from my home server. It's connected via USB and named "Sherry" on the AFP network as well.
Last week, I physically connected the drive to my Mac via FireWire for faster access. iTunes couldn't find the majority -- but not all -- of my songs, saying it couldn't find the "Sherry" network share. (All the MP3s are physically present on the hard drive.)
Now, iTunes won't open the library at all -- it's greyed out when I try to select it (using the alt-click-icon method to start iTunes.) Opening the default iTunes library on my Mac works fine, and I'm still using iTunes 7 so it's not a compatibility issue.
Rebuilding the library from the XML file won't work either, because only about 3K of my 20K+ songs show up if I do that.
Is there anything I can do to revive my library? Or do I have to restore from my months-old backup on the old hard drive?
I'm trying to start DJing professionally here soon and I need access to my playlists and library so I can import them into another program. Please help if you can.
