IPhoto library link/ viewing problem

all of a sudden, some of our photos seemed streched in the thumbnails. when we click on these photos to edit, iPhoto actually brings up a different picture (as if the thumbnail was not linked to the same photo). Also, all of our albums are wrong. when we look in an album the wrong pictures are there - once again the link thing. has anybody else reported this? what can we do?

Hi Pugnus,
that is certainly strange. Let's see if a rebuild of your library will help:
Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
Close iPhoto
Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.

  • What is the «iPhoto Library link» file for ?

Hi ...  In the Pictures (Images in French) folder, what is the «iPhoto Library link» alias file for ?  It points to the «iPhoto Library»in the same folder.

Robert, the link (alias) you are seeing is not created automatically by iPhoto. It must have been created accidentally. Perhaps you tried to repair your iPhoto library by holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘. if you dragged the library a little while doing this, it could have created this alias, because holding down these keys and dragging is one of the ways to create aliases.

I am thinking of buying a "new" iPad but I have a very large iPhoto library which I would like to keep intact and be able to view on my new iPad.  Is there a way to use a external storage device to store the iPhoto library and view it on the iPad?

You can't use an external hard drive like you would with a computer.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
When you first connect the USB flash drive, you will only see thumbnails of the pics on the iPad; you have to import the pic file to see the full size. With your large library of pics, you will have to do this repeateably and then delete pics so you don't exceed your memory capacity.

  • Multiple users access one iPhoto library and view and edit

I have 3 Macs and 5 users in our family. I'd like to have one iPhoto library that any user can access from any of the machines and view and/or edit. I don't need simultaneous access (which from reading posts I can see is not possible in iPhoto).
If I move the library to external HD will I be able to access the libary from each Mac over Wi-Fi? From what I read I'd need to hold ALT when opening iPhoto in each user account, on each Mac, and choose the library on the external drive.
If I set it up like this then once photos imported any user can see them, and edit if they want to? Presumably any Projects would be in the one central library rather tan being specific to a particular user?

    Yes and no
the hard drive that the iPhoto sits on must be formatted Mac OS extended (jorunaled)
iPhoto is not a multi user program and if two different people edit atthe same time it will not wrok correctly
Most importantly WiFi is not a reliable connection and has many dropouts - if you edit over WiFi you are highly likely to lose data and corrupt yoru library - it is not a good idea - viewing is slow but will work

  • IPhoto Library Upgrader causing problems?

I opened iPhoto and got a message "cannot view pictures with current version. Install iPhoto Library Upgrader" (something like this). After installing it, my whole library disappeared. Could they be in another folder? I can't time machine. Backup HD down.

Download and run Find Any File to search for a file named "Library6.iPhoto" which is unique to iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Need to use IPhoto library to view photos in Frontrow?

    Hi
just setting up my Mac mini. I have all my pictures organized in folders stored on a NAS.
Is there a way to browse those folders/pictures in Front Row or will it only work if I have all the photos imported into IPhoto?
I have tried to make an alias of the directory on the NAS where the pictures are stored in the local pictures folder on the mac mini harddisk. Doesn't seem to work (unless I am doing something wrong here as I am a fairly recent convert from Windows).
How do I go about it?
    Thanks
    mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As far as I know, a photo has to be in your iPhoto library for Front Row to be able to see it. An alias won't work because the photo has to be in iPhoto's database in order to be made into a slideshow, in much the same way that a music file has to be in iTunes' database.
All the photo section in Front row does is open iPhoto and use that to display your photos. If you look at a photo in Front Row, you will see that iPhoto has started in the background.

  • Opening the iphoto library to view and manage it's content

I know there is a way, by pressing some keys together, either in the finder or on iphoto itself at launching, in order to be able to open the application and, as in the older version, be able to see the folders and the rolls inside them.

Do you mean see the rolls and event folders in the Finder?
    There isn't.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • IPhoto library not updated when viewing through web browser, why?

I post a lot of pics to my blog on Tumblr. When I do I go to Tumblr, choose "Photo" and it brings up the screen with the options. I click the universal "browse" button and it brings up the finder. I click on the "Photos" icon under the "Media" section and it brings up my iPhoto library. The problem is it will be missing the newest photos I've imported. I could have imported photos days earlier or just a few minutes ago they just aren't there to choose.
Of course on some days they are available and I can't figure out where the disconnect is. Anyone have a clue? This is not tied to any particular browser either, I've tried them all. I feel like the meta data file iPhoto keeps (is it an xml file or something?) is not being updated? I have no idea. Any help is appreciated. TIA!

Have you tried clearing your browser's cache? I find that sometimes (particularly with Safari) it is inclined to retrieve old pages from its cache rather than from the web.

  • How do I clean-up iPhoto library in iMovie '08 and make my new ones appear?

I'm a graphic designer and I use Adobe Bridge to add metadata (keywords) to my pictures so they're searchable on the Internet - not just iPhoto (and iLife?) and after transferring all the image files from iPhoto onto my Time Capsule (external hard-drive) and deleting the Photo Albums from iPhoto, I created a new Album to import still frames/images to use in my new iMovie project. I cleaned out (emptied) my iPhoto trash to help free-up space on my hard-drive, too.
The problem I'm having is that my iPhoto library as viewed from iMovie - still shows all the old photo albums that I've already deleted and the new .PNG I imported doesn't appear; however, the old .JPG files I once had still appear with exclamation marks as the thumbnail images and I can't select or delete them. When I right-click on the iPhoto photo albums library within iMovie, I only get the option to open in iPhoto. I imagine there is some back door manipulation required to fix this. The iMovie and iPhoto software came pre-installed in my computer and I'm not so sure that re-formatting my computer with the start-up disc is the safe or correct answer.
I've been researching the iMovie forum to see if there is a file I should be able to access to fix a Cache file somewhere; however, I couldn't find any .xml files, cache files, or anything anywhere yet. Thanks in advance to anyone willing and able to share some knowledge. I look forward to resolving this troubling experience. My final goal is to use the .PNG file (which contains transparent data, unlike .JPG files which fill transparent data with white pixels) as a frame image if not as a floating graphic (i.e. picture-in-picture).

Sean in the iMovie technical support area (thanks to my lovely Apple Care plan purchase) answered my question about how to delete the iPhoto library, which I no longer use (because I use Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS3 to browse my photos and update their Metadata to make the images searchable not only on my computer, but others who don't have iPhoto, or iLife as well; even PC users and Internet search engines - when the images are uploaded as-is - without compression and changes that occur when uploaded to image hosts such as Photobucket.com, etc.):
Go to: *Finder >* (click on) *Pictures >* (and on the right, see iPhoto Library, Aperture, etc.? Select those files and...) *Move to Trash*
Now when you look at the Photos Browser in iMovie (⌘2) the folder, files, blank thumbnails and junk are (thankfully) gone!
As for using images located elsewhere for use in iMovie - I just have to locate them via the Finder, then select the file, then drag-and-drop the image for immediate placement into the part of My Project where I want to use the image and repeat this method for each incidence I want the graphic to appear.
Unfortunately, I must upgrade to iMovie '09 if I want to be able to take advantage of the Picture-in-Picture feature, which would enable me to place a logo or image graphic in a video project while other parts of the production are playing, but I can still use the title feature to embed text information such as a business name and phone number or (website) URL pertaining to the project as a surrogate stamp, watermark, or creative signature, but no other graphic image files may be used here.

  • How to fix lost connections to original high-resolution pictures in iPhoto and how to import an iPhoto Book from one iPhoto library to another

    Hi there,
I am using a MBP Pro with 8 GB cache and 1 TB HDD from beginning of 2011 with OS X Yosemite and iPhoto version 9.6 (910.29).
I created an iPhoto Book to print which contains my best pictures of 2013 and 2014. Then I got an error message when I wanted to print the book, saying (translated from German):
    Book could not be created.
With photo p233432343.jpg there was an error. The original version of that photo with full resolution could not be found or is damaged. Please replace the photo or delete it from your book.
When I enquired further, I found out, that many, many pictures in my iPhoto library have that problem - only the thumbnail picture is found by iPhoto, but not the one with the high resolution. When looking at the photos in detail one sees that they are not sharp because obviously the photo book only refers to the thumbnail. When I went into the iPhoto Library using Finder, I saw that the original high res photos are still there. As there are an estimated 3000 photos with a lost connection (some still have, it but about 1/2 of my photos don´t), it does not make sense to import those photos manually. This photo book is just the tip of the iceberg, so to say.
Then I looked for solutions in some forums. I had two lPhoto libraries, one on my HDD (120GB) and one on an external HDD (175GB). Assuming there might be problems, I have deleted (moved) the one on my HDD, because the "right one" is the one on my external HDD and started iPHoto again using the alt key. But that did not work either.
I then tried to repair my iPhoto library using iPhoto Library Manager, and merged and rebuilt libraries. The library that came out was crap - all folders that had lost connections to the high resolution pictures now have zero photos in it. Also it is lacking the projects, including the photo book I created.
Then I went to find out if there is a way to import the iphoto book project from the old, corrupt library into the new, repaired library but could not find anything. It can only be exported as a file structure or website. As the file structure is missing the high res pictures, that does not even solve the "little" problem of the photobook.
I would REALLY appreciate your help on the two questions:
1- Can you advise what I need to to do to to get the connection to the high resolution photos established again  ? As it is more than 3000 photos, I use an automated way of reestablishing that connection. Probably an answer to this question would make question 2 irrelevant.
2- Do you know if there is a way to export and import a book project created in iPhoto from one library to another ?

1 - Select  the thumbnail of one of the problem photos and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option.  This will take you to the folder containing the original file with that file selected by the Finder.
You can also use Find Any File to search for that file (get the file name from the Info pane in iPhoto). You will find the thumbnail version and maybe an edited version also.  Made sure what is found is the large, original version and note were it's located.  Search all of your drives with FAF just in case.
If you don't fine the full sized version then the only recourse is to use a file recovery application like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage on your drives to see if any of your full sized photos can be recovered.   If you find enough files to make the purchase of the software worthwhile buy it and recover the files.  However, since it may have been quite a while since you discovered the missing originals it seems unlikely you'll be able to recover any due to being overwritten.
2 - book projects are just entries in the library databases and can't be exported to another library.

  • Hi - we have 'lost' photos in the iphoto library

Hi - we have 'lost' photos in the iphoto library & relevant albums & slideshows frm 2009-2012; they are shown as empty. Older photos (pre 2009) were backed up & are all there in the library, album and slideshows although jumbled up in the library - this totals 1239 items, when there should be 10,000. We don't really know when this occurred - although photos from August 2011 were put on the computer around Xmas time - since that period this has occurred.  Also when we try to open a 'empty' slideshow, the iphoto application often automatically closes.
    OS is v10.4.11, iphoto v6.0.6.
Only 3.5GB of 149GB is free on HD.
    Restarting didn't help.
We have a LaCie external HD which we were going to use to do a backup and to transfer the Iphoto library across to, to then delete older photos in the main Mac HD and free up space; this is when we noticed the lost photos. We have not plugged in the external HD at all yet.
    Pls help. Thanks

    Hi Barry
    thanks for your response.
After digging around the pictures folder on the mac HD I found all the rolls located under pictures/iphotolibrary/originals - here it appears all recent photos are present in folders by year, and can be viewed in preview as jpegs.
Before trying a rebuild of the iphoto library - and viewing various related posts- I did a drag and drop of the entire pictures folder onto a external hard drive as a back up.
I have now tried to do a rebuild with the original mac HD iphoto folder but it is still the same - only early pre 2009 photos shown.
I have tried to create a new iphoto library using the external HD - When I try to create a new iphoto library from the external HD it only shows the same as the one currently on the mac HD however if go to next level down and I select the originals folder it appears that all 16000 photos are now being imported but none of the albums and slideshows are retained.
    Any further thoughts on this?
    Thanks

  • Trouble opening iPhoto library in Aperture that has been transferred to an external hard drive.

I am having trouble opening my iPhoto library in Aperture now that it has been transferred to an external hard drive.
    Versions being used:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch mid-2010
    OS X v. 10.9.1 Mavericks
    Aperture v. 3.5.1
    iPhoto v. 9.5.1
Order of events: got MacBook > took pictures > created an iPhoto library > upgraded to Mountain Loin > added more photos to iPhoto library > upgraded to Mavericks > purchased and downloaded Aperture > copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
When attempting to switch to this iPhoto library while using Aperture an error stating, “Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.”  iPhoto can access this iPhoto library with no problem.  What is missing? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

“Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.”
Aperture 3.5.1  is checking for file system compatibility, iPhoto not always.
copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
Check the filesystem on your WD drive. Did you remember to format the drive for MacOS, before you copied the library there? It needs to be formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) to be used with any photo library. iPhoto may be able to open the library, if the filesystem is not supported, but you are risking data loss.
You can reformat the drive with Disk Utility, if the file system is wrong (after backing up your iPhoto library to a different drive). See:
    iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

You see the File System in the Finder's "File > Get Info" panel, when you select the drive in the Finder and use "File > Get Info" from the main menu bar or press cmd-I.

  • Sync iPhoto library in Aperture

Is it possible to sync my iPhoto library in Aperture.
I use my iPhoto library to view and show the images with or without slideshows and my Aperture library to edit the images.
It would be nice that the edited images will show up in iPhoto and the imported images in iPhoto will be visible in Aperture.

You cannot "sync" the databases. You can import the iPhoto library into Aperture, and you can use Aperture's JPEG previews to view Aperture files in iPhoto and many other areas of OS X.
Please, read the other threads on this. It's been discussed at length. Also have a read of the documentation... it details it as well

  • Corrupted Photo Hides iPhoto Library from other iLife apps

I was recently using iMovie HD to create a movie for church and wanted to insert some still images given to me by the pastor. I imported the images into iPhoto, but found that iMovie reported that I needed to "Launch iPhoto 2 or later to populate this list."
I am a regular user of iPhoto 6 for my own personal needs, and have launched it dozens of times on my computer, so this puzzled me. I checked the help files and found under the article entitled "I don't see any photos in the Photos pane," which simply says that I must be using iPhoto 4 or higher and have opened iPhoto at least once, both of which are true, but I relaunched iPhoto just in case, but to no avail.
Checking to see if the problem was with iMovie, I found that I also had no access to my photos from iDVD, so the problem seems to be with iPhoto.
I also checked out Apple's support database, and found the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75491, "iLife: Cannot See iPhoto Files in Other iLife Applications." Following these instructions, including the recreation of the XML file, yielded no positive results.
After some experimenting with iPhoto/iMovie on other computers and in other accounts, I found that when I imported a particular set of pictures was when the pictures disappeared from iMovie. I tried deleting these pictures from my own main iPhoto library, but the problem was not solved. I finally found out that once the corrupted photo had been imported into iPhoto, nothing I would do would allow the iPhoto pictures to be viewable from other applications.
I eventually solved this by renaming my iPhoto library, using GraphicConverter to convert the suspect files in batch mode and importing the converted files into a new iPhoto library. This at least allowed me to get the movie finished, but I now have two iPhoto libraries on my computer, only one of which is visible to other iLife applications.
I found out that if I held down some keys while launching iPhoto, I would be given the option to rebuild the iPhoto library using four checkboxes: Rebuild small thumbnails, Rebuild all thumbnails, Rebuild Library database and recover orphaned photos. I've done all four to no effect.
So, after all of that, my final question is, is it possible to restore my iPhoto library such that I can again access it from other iLife applications without losing the many albums I've created?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

So far, no go with iPhoto Library Manager, although the program and the help files that come with it have suggested some leads.
First of all, when I open iPhoto Library Manager, it reports:
The album data file for this library is malformed.
    XML parser errors:
Encountered unexpected character k on line 59525
    Old-style plist parser error:
Malformed data byte group at line 1; invalid hex
So I opened AlbumData.xml in BBEdit and checked out line 59525 (as suggested by the iPhoto Library Manager help files) and found that it looked like this:
    <string> <key>274</key>
    Above it is the line:
    <key>771</key>
Most <key><string> pairs look like this:
    <key>XXX</key>
    <string>KeywordName</string>
So for some reason, the problem line isn't closing the string tag. I tried editing the keyword that came after the problem line, but it didn't fix the parse error. From what I can tell, manually editing the AlbumData.xml file won't solve the problem, as iPhoto only writes to it for other applications, and doesn't read it. The next time I launch iPhoto, it would simply write the same data.
I also checked for the string 771 in the file as that's the keyword ID that appears before the parse error, but it's only found in relation to an album and a roll.
Because of this, iPhoto Library Manager can't rebuild the library. However, the help files do offer the author's email address, and it's obvious that he's spent time looking into this type of problem (the help files describe exactly the problem behavior I'm having with the error message seen in iMovie). So I'm going to zip up the AlbumData.xml file and send it to him. While I do that, I may look through the keywords more closely and see if any of them look like they have suspect characters. Perhaps renaming them will solve the problem.
Of course, this keyword clue doesn't explain why importing un-keyworded photos would cause the problem in the first place, but if I can get it fixed, I'll be happy.

download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use the free trial's rebuild command to rebuild - this creates a totally new library leaving the existing one untouched for future use
