IPhoto library saved to SMB share?

Greetings,
My clients are Lion, running iPhoto 11.  They are bound/authenticated to an AD server, while their files are served/stored on another Windows 2008 server (SMB). The drive is formatted as NTFS.  So when a user logs in, their desktop folder/files actually reside on the windows share.  Can their iPhoto library live on this server?  We're getting an error:
'The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsopported'
Please tell me that Apple doesn't ONLY allow these library files to be written to Mac OS Extended drives?
Thanks in advance,
Andy Z

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • Share one iTunes library on a SMB share between PC & Mac

    Hi,
Is there anyway I can share one iTunes library and the music files on a SMB share between a PC and a Mac? I assume there would be a problem with how the Mac and PC assign network drives differently would be an issue, or is there a way around this?
At the moment I'm only sharing the music files on the SMB share but with separately iTunes library on the PC and Mac.

I have itunes match. its good but its not perfect. it downloads wrong versions of songs. for example it downloads the censored version of many of my songs. plus it doesnt do podcasts, movies, tvshows, books.
plus it doesnt show my smart playlists in the same track order as on my computer. its good but it has bugs and shortcomings.
thanks for the suggestion but i'd like to try the way i initially posted about.

  • Trouble opening iPhoto library saved on ex HD after Yosemite update

Last week I saved my entire iPhoto library onto an external hard drive (Lacie) to create more space on my MacBook Air.
I made sure I was able to open the library safely with the 'option function' through the Lacie before deleting all of the 4k photos from my computer.
Today I updated to the OS X Yosemite. Now when I attempt to open the library saved on the Lacie, it's showing up grey and not allowing me to open.
ANY IDEA HOW I CAN ACCESS ALL OF THESE PHOTOS?
    Any recommendations are highly appreciated.

    Hi,
I hope this helps you to ... I hat the same problem in Yosemite - iPhoto.
Importing the photo library ... I let it run for more than 24 hours ... but nothing.
I used iPhoto Library Manager to get back all of my photo in iPhoto.
This works for me ... it toke about 10 minutes to get iPhoto App work again.
You can download the iPhoto Library Manager for free and using the trail version.
    Good luck ...

  • HT5043 Are photos in iphoto library saved in other places on my hard drive?

My iphoto library is 250 gb and I have photos that show up my documents folder and in other folders.  I have a 500gb hard drive that is full, I am tring to free up space on and I can't seem to make any progress.

By default when you import photos ot the iPhoto library they are copied and you can delete the soruce photos (be sure the iPhoto preferenced to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library has not been unchecked)
And be sure to aways have a good backup - without one you will lose your photos sooner or later
Probably the solution is to get a larger hard drive or an external hard drive and run your iPhoto library on it

  • Can I Create A Symbolic Link to folders stored on an SMB Share folder?

    Hello,
I am very new to Unix and was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction with regards to Symbolic links and an SMB share folder ....
Have purchased an ext. LAN Drive enclosure (http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/pleiades/pd_usblan) which connects to my wireless router via ethernet like my G5 (main Mac) - our iBook connects via Airport. I have copied all my general documents/files to the SMB share folder on the ext. drive so that I can access them from the G5 and also the iBook.
However I'd also like to be able to store my actual Mail folder (/Users/Mark/Library/Mail/), , Safari folder (/Users/Mark/Library/Safari) + my Address Book and other folders sitting in the Application Support folder on my SMB share so all important docs/folders are in the one place. I've tried storing these folders on the SMB share and putting an Alias to these back in Users/Mark/Library/Mail etc but of course an Alias doesn't work.
Question 1: Can I create a symbolic link to these files if these are stored on an SMB share folder? If so, could you please tell me exactly what I'd need to type into Terminal? My SMB Share path is smb://STORAGE-XXXX/MARK
I have copied my iPhoto library and iTunes library to the SMB share and are working fine.
Question 2: Is it possible/worth attempting to move my whole home folder to the SMB share folder? Ideally, I'd like to be able to access my Mail from the iBook as well. If I could log into either the G5 or the iBook and access my latest Mail, Address Book and other Application Settings, that would be perfect. Would this be possible?
    Thanks
    Mark.
    Dual 1.8GHz G5 (Rev.B), 2Gig RAM, 9600XT   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Dear Mark,
Yes you can. The command to create a link will look something like this:
    $ ln -s thisFolder /Users/mark/thatFolder
I did this while I was hosting a microsoft based game. This put all of the players into a common directory.
SMB just resolved the link and everything worked fine.
However, as I understand it, some other applications do NOT work very well with links. As I have NOT tried it with other applications, I fear I can be of NO help to you in this matter.
The only way to find out which applications work with links is to try them and see what happens.
    Best of luck,
    Kurt

  • Sharing iphoto library on network drive

    Hello,
I'd like to use the same iPhoto library on two Macs.
Therefore, I intend to use my time capsule as a network drive. I learned from other posts that I can easily move my iPhoto library to the network share. Using two laptop on the same photo library, however, is not that easy. It seems that if both are accessing the library at the same time , unpredictable behavior might result.
Is it possible to avoid that issue or is there another software for photo management that can work with a shared library?
    Thanks
    Armin

I learned from other posts that I can easily move my iPhoto library to the network share.
True. Drag and drop is easy.
But it will damage your Library and risks data loss. See this article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
    for more. Note the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
    Next:
It seems that if both are accessing the library at the same time , unpredictable behavior might result.
Nothing unpredictable at all. It either won't work or it will corrupt the Library. iPhoto is not a server application. It's a single-user database.
There are server apps, they start at around the $200 mark.
If you want to share the Library between two machines put it onto a portable hard drive, formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and plug it into either machine as necessary.

  • Cannot save to SMB shares in Pages

This issue is actually occurring ONLY in the iWork applications, Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
User recently upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.1.  Has two SMB shares to smb://servername called "Public" and "Company Name".
The two locations are available in Finder as typical network shares in the left-hand pane.  You can navigate the Shares, open files, etc. without any issues.
However, if I create a new file in Pages and type some text into the new file and attempt to save it to "Public" or "Company Name", I'm presented with the following error:
"Untitled" couldn't be moved because you don't have permission to access "Public".  To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.
When I do this, I see the information as "You have custom permissions" which typically indicates an NTFS or ACL related permissions that OSX can't quite read.
This same issue occurs whether i'm in Pages, Keynote or Numbers.
    Troubleshooting:
    1.  Checked and verified permissions were correct on Windows 2003 server hosting the SMB shares;
    2.  Created new file in TextEdit and attempted to save it to "Public" and "Company Name".  File save was successful.
    3.  Created new user on machine and logged in and performed steps above with Pages, Keynote and Numbers.  Ran into the exact same error.
    4.  Disconnected the shares and reconnected to the server using domain administrator account.  Same issues occur regardless ONLY in the iWorks applications.  Permissions are fine for navigating location, opening files and saving in any application outside of iWorks.
For now, I have the user performing the following steps:
    1. Create new document in Pages, Keynote or Numbers.  Edit the document.  Save it to the local drive in Documents\Need to Save
    2. Within Finder, user goes to Documents\Need to Save and drags the files that need to be on the network to the appropriate location, "Public" or "Company Name".
I'm almost thinking I need to remove and reinstall the iWork suite applications.  However, I don't want to perform that step without checking here.
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.  Thank you!

    Peter,
In working with the client, we did find that we could create new documents in the various iWork '09 applications and save them to the SMB shares without any issues.  However, since 5.0 Pages, for now, is installed, all applications have been created in 5.0.1, which is the current version on the App Store, and therefore, cannot be opened in Pages '09.  When we open Pages '09, we're prompted to upgrade to Pages 5.0.  Therefore, we look to still have the issue in saving to SMB shares through the iWorks applications regardless.  Especially since the client cannot access any of the current documents in iWorks '09 applications as they were created in the newer application.
Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!
    Jeff

  • Existing iphoto library into new Iphoto 08

I have an iphoto library saved onto an external h/d from a G5 with 100's of photos.
I now have a new machine and want to change the iphoto library to be on my external drive , which has my previous Iphoto library on it, with my new machine.
How do I do this please?

Do you want the library on the external HD to stay on the external HD? If so just launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when askec, opt to choose a library. Navigate to the external HD and select the library there.
Then if you want to get the pictures, if any, from the library that is in the Pictures folder you can:
1- open the external HD library with iPhoto and open the library in the Pictures folder and drag the Originals folder into the open iPhoto window.
2 - use iPhoto Library Manager to move the events and albums from the library in the Pictures folder to the one on the external HD. This will preserve any keywords and comments you might have assigned them.
If you want the big library in your Pictures folder then rename the one in the Pictures folder and copy the external HD library in there with it. Then use one of the two methods above to move the photos from the small library into the large one.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto won't select iPhoto Library

I upgraded to the newest iPhoto. No problems. My iPhoto Library is very big, about 50 gigs, so I keep it on a NAS. I opened iPhoto once, and it wouldn't open my iPhoto library because my NAS share wasn't mounted. OK, so I quit iPhoto, mounted the network share, and then opened it again. It didn't see my iPhoto Library so I opened it while holding the option key, and went to manually select my library. However, the library is greyed out. It won't let me select it.
How could this of happened? How can I get my photos back and get iPhoto to see the library it had been using for weeks before?

    Michael
There are few anomalies turning up with iPhoto libraries on NAS shares.

  • Sending Entire iPhoto Library to Time Capsule

My MacBook Pro is almost full! I want to free up space by sending my almost 40 GB of data from my iPhoto library to my 2 TB Time Capsule! help please!

Apple says specifically DO NOT DO IT. Plug in a USB drive or other faster disk if you can afford it.. and put the iphoto library on that. If you move the iphoto library to the TC A. It will be corrupted. B. It cannot be backed up.. and you will lose the entire thing.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

  • Can i share an iPhoto library between 2 computers ???

Can i share an iPhoto library between 2 computers, it I store my library on a AS drive connected to an AirPort Extrême Base Station ?

    on a AS drive
Do you mean NAS drive? No.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Will it be wireless? That's good for viewing but...
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • How do I share one Iphoto library with other User accounts on the same iMac

I have created a shared Iphoto Library. When I add this to one of the user accounts, it copies all the pictures instead of sharing the same library. The result is that it uses memory.
Is it possible to create a shared library that is shared by all the users without actually copy all the pictures to each users Iphoto library?

    Hi MikaelK,
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • How do I best share an iPhoto library to several users on a Lion Server?

I am considering setting up a Lion Server to use for our family of five. The one thing I struggle to understand from searching for information here, and throughout the Internet is: Can I set up a Lion server to have shared libraries for iTunes and iPhoto, and what is the best way to set it up? I would also like to understand if such a shared setup would create any issues with reduced functionality and/or performance?
Today we share libraries across several accounts on one computer, and that works mostly fine, although with some restrictions (only one account can have iPhoto open at a time, which is not much of an issue if on same computer; iTunes can share music but not Apps, ...)

I followed Apple's support team's instruction to create iPhoto on the new external hard drive (My Passport) - and then drag and drop the existing iPhoto library onto it from the Master file.
Don't know who told you that but it would be difficult to be more wrong.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • As a new member to the mac world could some please tell how i can get my imac, macbook and iPhone to share the same iPhoto library

How can i share the same iPhoto library so that i dont have to update each computer?

Not easily. iPhoto is designed for a single user. While it is possible to share the Library there are significant limitations.
Some questions: Do you want all three libraries identical? Same photos, same Albums, Same slideshows?
Do you import and arrange photos on one machine or on all of them?
    What networking do you have?

    Detail:
I've recently purchaced a 4TB Thunderbolt drive to store my "vast" music and photo libraries. iPhoto had an issue reading the moved library, so I bought and used iPhoto Library Manager to "rebuild" it. Apart from much of the original data such as date taken & camera used etc, it appears to be working well. The aforementioned mpg video was taken some 9 years ago, using an early model "iMate" smart phone, and opens and plays fine on iPhoto, but I cannot open it with anything else, (I've tried iMovie, VLC players, Wondershare and Handbrake) nor can I share it. I just want to edit it, and share it with family.
    Any help would be appreciated...

No - not iMovie, VLC, Wondershare or Handbrake... Quick time starts with a "CONVERTING", then I get
I've looked at the "tell me more" links, tried downloading some of the movie players there. I'm begining to think the file is corrupt.
