IPhoto Library seems far too large

Hi,
When I first loaded my images into iPhoto I thought what I wanted was to preserve the original file structure i.e. I keep all my images in a 'Digital Photos' folder, then broken down by year and date. So when I imported the library to iPhoto I unchecked +Copy Files To iPhoto Library.+
My iPhoto library seems just as large as my Digital Photos folder. I think now rather than have a separate folder, I'd rather just store the photos in iPhoto and half the disk space. So my two questions are:
1) If I have a 'referenced library' of aliases which appears to be the case, why is the iPhoto library package so large regardless?
2) If it were easier to use a managed library (no need for separate photos folder) how could I move all of my photos into iPhoto easily without having to erase my whole library, loosing my events and tags?
Thanks for your help!

So when I imported the library to iPhoto I unchecked Copy Files To iPhoto Library.
As you probably know from reading this forum this is not a recommended way to use iPhoto - there are many drawbacks and over time it will create problems for you
1) If I have a 'referenced library' of aliases which appears to be the case, why is the iPhoto library package so large regardless?
the iPhoto library contains an original of the photo (in you case this is just an alias since you are not copying items to the iPhoto library) in the originals folder, a thumbnail (very small) of the photo in the data folder, a copy of the latest modified photo in the modified folder if any edits or modifications have been made to the photo plus a database structure description file (library6.iPhoto) and some other support files - usually small
SInce your iPhoto library is large I assume that you have edited, rotated, cropped or otherwise modified many of your photos.
2) If it were easier to use a managed library (no need for separate photos folder) how could I move all of my photos into iPhoto easily without having to erase my whole library, loosing my events and tags?
This is the recommended method of operation
TO go from a referenced library which you now have to to a managed library many people have been successful using Alias herder -http://www.rorohiko.com/aliasherder.html
Back up your iPhoto library in case of problems and run alias herder against the library - is will pull the oritinal photos into the library originals folder replacing the aliases and you will be fine if everything goes smoothly
And keep on backing up - it is important for any computer data
And strongly consider getting Old Toad's automator script and regularly backing up the database file, library6.iPhoto in addition to your regular full library backups

  • Iphoto library seems to slow down my new MacPro.

so far no one at at the Apple store can have a solution why the new MacPro is RATHER  slow.
some did suggest that the iphoto library MAY BE  too big...
also, when I work with it ..( it contains over `12000 items) ..it machine works hard and slow.
    who can help ?
    establish another library ?
safe the pics on an external harddrive ?
    appreciate your ideas and help,
    heinz

Open the Activity Monitor when iPhoto is slowing down your Mac and see what processes is soaking up all the CPU cycles.  Also check the Console for messages during that time.  It can also give info as to what's slowing things down.
Do you have any anti virus software installed or have used MacKeeper, CleanMyMac or similar type of software on your Mac?

  • HT5260 Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How to manage iPhoto library that's too big for my hard drive

I have a mid-2007 iMac with a 250 GB HD.   My iPhoto library is  164GB.  Is there a way to move this library off the HD to a backup drive?  I have no more capacity to operate with.
    O'S X 10.7.5.   IPhoto '11

Yes, you can move the iPhoto Library to any other attached Mac drive and it will work fine. Double-click the moved file to launch iPhoto, and it will remember the library location the next time - you can just launch iPhoto normally from that point on.
Delete the original once you're sure the new file works.
You might also want to look at iPhoto Library Manager, which lets you split a large library file into multiple libraries. I think it's about $20-30.

  • IPhoto Library seems to be empty after running the iPhoto Library Upgrader

    Hi,
I just transfered my account from a previous Mac Pro running 10.8.5 to a new MacBook Pro running 10.9.   I tried to open my iPhoto Library and it suggested me to download the iPhoto Library Upgrader, so I did, and upgraded the iPhoto Library, but now, there aren't any photos on my Library, the iPhoto Library weight is 32 GB, so I don't really know what's going on with it.   Please some help, all the pictures from my 2 year old daughter are there

Drag the library that is not working to the desktop on the new  Mac and then drag the library from the old Mac o the pictures folder on the new Mac and launch iPhoto
You should not need the library upgrader. It is only for iPhoto 5 and earlier. iPhoto should simply do any required upgrades and you are on your way
Once you have a working  library trash the one on the desk top

  • Backing up iPhoto Library to DVD: too big

I want to back up my iPhoto library to DVD so I can have an "off-site" copy. However it is 17GB, and won't fit on one DVD. What's the best way to back up to multiple DVD's? I do have Toast 8, if that's the best way.
    Thanks!

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a 20GB disk image, copy the entire library to it, compress it, and then use this tool to segment the image. You need all the segments to recover anything.

  • My iPhoto library seems corrupted

I can see my pictures, but I have three entries for each picture - the first has the date and seems like it is the real event.  Then the same picture will be duplicated twice and instead of a date, it has a long string of characters and numbers, like a GUID.
Is there some easy fix for this?  Or do I have to go through all 3000 pictures and delete things?

I can see my pictures, but I have three entries for each picture
Sounds like you imported one Library to another? Did you drop the Library icon onto the iPhoto icon for instance?
Restore from your back up is the simple and fast solution.

  • Sharing photos by email from iPhoto 11 takes far too long. Easier to specify email via Mail in iPhoto Preferences and forget the fancy presentation in iPhoto.

Though there is an attractive range of photo presentation options in iPhoto email sharing, the time taken to send an image using these is inordinately long: 4-5 minutes for a single image. Added to this is all the confusion created by 'unrecognised username and password' error messages. All in all; though it's a pity given the sophistication of the new options, it is easier and much faster to set the email option to Mail in the iPhoto General Preferences. An unfortunate shot in the foot by Apple I think.

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route to the Developers.
Also, remember that the Stationery feature in Mail has more templates - and you can download others too.

  • Aperture 115GB Library...Too Large!

I have an Aperture Library with about 30K photos in it. The file size is 115GB. I have read this forum and done some of the tips and only saved about 10gb (was 125gb). Is there any way that I can get this down to a manageable size? There HAS to be a way to tell it to take all the photos and delete all the versions EXCEPT the final one for each file...

There HAS to be a way to tell it to take all the photos and delete all the versions EXCEPT the final one for each file...
Versions do not need much space. Aperture stores the original master image file - raw or jpeg, just like you imported it, and then it will store the sequence of adjustments done to the image to create the version. This way the versions will only need a few bytes. You could save a bit by deleting the previews of your images, but then you will no longer be able to use your Aperture images in the Media Browser, and some operations may be slower.
To delete the Previews select all images in the "Photos" view and use the command "Photos > Delete Previews". Or reset the size of the previews to a smaller size (Preferences > Previews > Photo Preview Fit within ...)
Also, if you are syncing with iTunes your iPod Photo Cache may be quite large.
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
If you no longer sync with iTunes, you may want to delete the Photo Cache.
But in the long run I'd suggest to put your Aperture Library onto an external drive or use a referenced library with most of the original files on an external volume.
115GB is a moderate library size for 30k photos, so there is not much that can be done to reduce the size, unless you are willing to reduce the quality of the originals or to relocate them to an external volume.

  • My latency seems far too high.

Like many others here, I primarily use my internet connection for gaming, now along the way over the past few years with BT I've never had the best connection but for a long time my ping was normal.
A couple of months ago my internet was upgraded, maybe it was something to do with the nearest exchange, I'm not sure, it wasn't an upgrade I asked for, mind. We were given the brand new homehub as well.
So the upgrade went something like 1mb - > 4.5mb. Can't complain too much, better download speeds and what not. The biggest gripe I have, that is when this upgrade occurred, my latency sky rocketed from about 15-20 to 35-40 (average) on UK servers.
It's pretty **bleep** annoying to say the least, because when I connect to other european servers it's almost unplayable and I play on servers outside of the UK the most. I rang up BT to ask for interleaving to be turned off, as usual they pretended they didn't know what it was and ignored me. So what can I do, anything? Doesn't seem right that I get 40ping to a UK server, when most of the country sits on about 15ping.

  • Controlling Software Update service - /Library/Software Update too large

We have multiple locations each with their own server that also runs Software Update repositories. One happens to be quite larger than the others, filling up the HD (200GB vs 100GB). Is there a way to trim them down automatically or do I need to manually stop serving up updates?
    Thanks!

The Software Update service has been mostly rendered obsolete by the Caching service, which is much more efficient.

  • Apple watch resting calories seem far too high

I've had the apple watch since the 24th, and I've worn it continuously until bedtime. All of my metrics are accurate (height/weight).
My Resting Calories (found in the iPhone activity app by swiping left under the move row) are listed as 3600 Cal. This seems incredibly high to me. My BMR is 2100 Cal, as calculated here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator
I've used other BMR sites and they all give me a similar number.
Is anyone else having this issue? I can't comprehend how it could be so high. If I ate 3600 Cal in one day (without exercising) I would be gaining weight rapidly!

    No.

  • I migrated my iphoto library yesterday - now won't open.

I migrated my large (almost 400gb) iPhotos library to Photos yesterday and it seemed to work.  I could scroll through photos, edit, see the whole libray, etc.  Now Photos is saying it can't open the Photos Library.photoslibrary (System Photo Library).  It tried to repair but said to choose another library.  What should I do?  The iPhoto Library is still listed there.  Should I click on that and let it try again?

Great, that you got it working!
The iPhoto library was evidently too large to migrate and everything got stuck trying to migrate the large library.
The size of the library should not matter. However, the free storage on your Mac does. If you are running out of storage because the library is so large, then the migration might not succeed.
If you have less than 10GB of storage, don't try anything at all, that might need additional storage. I'd try to keep at leat 20GB of storage free at all times.

  • My iPhoto library is full, can i use ilife 11 to upload my pics to the cloud?

I'm currently running OS X 10.9.4 and iPhoto 8.1.2. My iPhoto library is getting too large and I'm not sure what to do. I back my system up on time machine monthly.  I was going to delete some files, many family videos because they're backed up, to make room to install ilife11.  The thought was I would then be able to use the cloud storage, after installing ilife 11, to put my photos on.  Does this seem like a good options to roll with?

    No
There is no place to store photos from your Mac in iCloud with any version of iPhoto for the Mac - and a backup is different from an archive - a backup will sooner or  later delete anything that is deleted form the main drive - how long depends on the software you use and the available disk space
for m=now you need to purchase an external drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and move your library to it -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
