IPhoto Library shared among local users

Does anyone know how to solve this problem:
I want to have a single, global iPhoto library on my machine which is shared among all local users. In other words, I want to have a library where each user sees the same photos in it and where each user is allowed to add, remove or modify the photos within the library.
What do I have to do to accomplish this?
Kind regards,
Michael

I have done this for several years, using both iPhotos 4 and 5. My method wasn't very complicated, though, so maybe I did somehting wrong!
Anyway, I took my iPhoto library from its original location, moved it to the "shared" folder found inside the "users" folder and reset the access privileges to the folder and all subfolders to enable free access for all users. That's it. In order to activate the shared library for each user you will have to delete the iPhoto folder inside each separate user's folder (make sure these are empty or backed up first, of course!). When you launch iPhoto it will give you the opportunity to find the library -- all you do then is to point it to your iPhoto library in the shared folder. Since you are now sharing the same library between users you shouldn't use iPhoto with several users active at the same time.
As I said, though, when I saw that other reply with all the complicated stuff (I didn't read through it all, but it looked really impressive) I started fearing that I have done something wrong all along. But it has worked!
Now I'm having difficulties, though -- I'm trying to use one library over my home airport network and that seems to be just way too slow for comfort.
Kind regards,
Oscar

  • How Can I Share iPhoto Library/Keywords Among Multiple Users

Hi there! I am having a bit of a dilemma where I am trying how I can have several users access a shared iPhoto library (as well as retain their own personal iPhoto libraries). Basically, I have a handful of (three) users that need to be able to store/search against a common shared photo library - ideally, in iPhoto.
I understand that I can share albums through iPhoto (users are using a mix of iPhoto '08 and '09) on one account as long as iPhoto is running - a serious drawback. When I tried sharing photos via this method I was able to see the shared albums; however the keywords that were defined for those photos were not available. This presents two questions:
    1) Can iPhoto share its library among multiple users (including keywords, etc) so that if a user account (let's call it "media") shares out selected albums that the viewing users (user1 and user2) can search against the keywords in the host library? Or is this not possible with iPhoto?
    2) Is there another way of sharing photos that is more efficient and can be hosted on our private servers? The interface in iPhoto is amazing - and if there was an application that allowed for that same sort of feel/tagging we would be good to go...

Well here is the weird thing. If I was sharing out the library from my computer, I could search for the keywords (and obtain results) as expected. However, if I went to another computer that was viewing my shared library, searching by the same keyword did not return any results.

  • IPhoto Library Sharing by Multiple Users on Same Computer

Is there a "tried and true" way to set up iPhoto08 to allow my wife and I to share/access the Photo Library? I prefer not to set up external drive for library. It appears that photos I download from camera to iPhoto on my "login" do not load to the library on my wife's login and vise/versa.
Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully not too technical please. Thanks.
    Jeff

There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Best way to set up Shared iPhoto Library for Family - individual user IDs

We have a iMAc shared by the family on which we want to establish an iPhoto library that we can all access and utlize. I have not found any good guidance on how best to set this up.
Any suggestions or good references ?
    Thank you,

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location.

  • IPhoto Library sharing in raw format

I share my iPhoto library on a MacBookPro in my local network. They are mostly in raw format. However, on my iMac, when looking at pictures from my MacBookPro, they are shown as jpegs, not raws.
Can I somehow modify the sharing preferences - or whatever it is that makes this happen - to share raw photos in their original format?

yeah, I can follow you there, it may not make sense for a lot of people to share raws. On the other hand, the option to do that would do no harm as far as I know so from my point of view it comes as lack of functionality.
I could understand it if apple says, this option is reserved for our pro app and not the consumer one, that's why I was asking about aperture.
It's just that I don't want to organize my library and that of my wife that much. It would be quite handy if I could just share my pictures as they are and where they are and not having to export / import / convert them.
So this might not be my way then. I think I'll have a look into iPhoto sharing a library among multiple users, maybe that works for me.
Thanks for your insights, i appreciate you taking the time.
    Cheers,

  • Can I share one iPhoto library with all the users in my iMac?

I moved the library to the shared folder and gave it 775 permissions but when I try opening it with the second users it asks if I want to fix permissions. I click OK and after a while it tells me it is locked... which kind of tells me I won't be able to share it but I wanted to confirm... Thank you.

No, you cannot share your photo library in a shared folder. That will give permission problems.
You need to move your iPhoto library to a disk volume or a disk partition where permissions are ignored.

how to make iPhotos library available to other users

To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.

There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • How can you share a iPhoto library with another account user

I have recently seen the light and swapped from Windows to my lovely new iMac. However I am rather confused how I can configure my iPhoto library so my wife can view the same library in her account on the same machine (this was a simple thing within Windows, using shared folders). Am I missing something or do I have to duplicate the same library and place into my wife's account and then update each time we upload some photo's? Please help!

This may not be the "neatest" solution possible, but it's one that works. Just as iPhoto makes it easy to share photos between computers on the same network, you can also share photos between accounts on the same computer; but you'll have to be logged in with iPhoto running.
    1) Configure iPhoto in your account for photo sharing (from iPhoto, select Preferences > Sharing> Share my photos).
    2) Enable fast user switching from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options. This is the key to the process, which will allow you to remain logged in while your wife is also logged in. It's also a very handy feature if you and your wife use the computer a lot from your own accounts.
    3) Enable "Personal File Sharing" and "Remote Apple Events" from System Preferences > Sharing > Services. [I had already done this step, so I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary]
    4) With iPhoto up and running in your account, use Fast User Switching to log into your wife's account (ie, you remain logged-in). [The Fast User Switching menu will be in the upper right of the main menu bar.]
    5) From her iPhoto preferences, select Sharing > "Look for shared photos" if it's not already switched on.
Your photos will magically appear in the left hand column of your wife's iPhoto application using the name you designated in your copy of iPhoto.
Caveats: performance is not very good, you must be logged in and have iPhoto running, HP printers (if you have one) don't work well with fast user switching
Other solutions might be possible by "drilling a hole" into your account by altering the Unix permissions. I've used this technique to make my iTunes library available to other users on my machine. Such a solution would no doubt improve performance.
Finally, there are third-party products that allow you to manage multiple iPhoto libraries. I've never used these, but they might allow you to load the iPhoto library from another account assuming permissions are properly set.
Hope this is of some use; I'm sorry if it's a little more complicated than you might have expected.

  • Can I copy the iPhoto Library to a different user on the same computer?

I have spent a lot of time organizing my iPhoto library.
My wife also has a user account on the iMac. She would like the iPhoto library I currently have, but (for many reasons) we do not want to share the same library.
Another words, I want to copy my iPhoto library to her side, then both maintain independent libraries.
Can I copy the iPhoto Library icon (in the Pictures folder) on my side to the the shared folder, then delete and replace her iPhoto Library file with mine in her Pictures folder? Or is there something about how the library is set up that will cause problems if I copy my iPhoto Library to her side as well?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

    TD,
Thanks. I deleted her iPhoto Library, and replaced it with mine. I did hold down option and command the first time I opened iPhoto as you suggested. However, it did not ask me anything. It just opened as I might normally expect it to.
The library works perfectly, it is definitely my library that copied over.
Should I be worried that it did not ask me anything (like about rebuilding or repairing library permissions)?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

  • Duplicate Photos and iPhoto Library Sharing

My first question is about sharing my iPhoto library.  I would like to buy a Time Capsule to back up all of my computers.  I've been told not to use that to store all of my pictures, only to use it for backups. I wish there were an easy way to share my iPhoto library between users on the same computer, and combine libraries between computures.  If you know of any easy solution to this please let me know.  Most of my pictures are on my iMac with one account.  My macbook pro has two accounts set up.  I'd like to be able to put them all in the same place, or at least select many to have in just one account for all users to access. Is there an easy way to do that? Could I connect a USB hard drive to my Time Capsule soly for iPhoto? My other question is, when I put pictures in my account iPhoto, and then put the same pictures into my wife's account on the same computer (because she'd like to see them also, edit them ect.) am I using twice as much space on my hard drive?

You can merge Libraries with the paid version ($20) of iPhoto Library Manager
Could I connect a USB hard drive to my Time Capsule soly for iPhoto?
    Yes... but.
Would this be a wired or wireless connection to the Library? WIred is fine. Wireless is fine for viewing.
However:  A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
when I put pictures in my account iPhoto, and then put the same pictures into my wife's account on the same computer (because she'd like to see them also, edit them ect.) am I using twice as much space on my hard drive?
    Yes.

  • How do I make an iPhoto Library accessible to all users of one computer ?

My wife and I use our new iMac, and we log in independently.  However it seems all the photos from our family album can be seen only by me - when she logs in, iPhoto says there are no photos stored.  How do we share these photos across both user accounts ?  Same question would go for music

The point of having different log-ins is that you can keep your data - that's your photos and your music - separate. If you don't, why have separate log-ins? So, the easiest and most simple solution is to use the same log-in.
Other than that: what do you mean by 'Share"?
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder (but note: some users find ongoing permissions issues with the Library in this location. It might be better to use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.

  • Iphoto library sharing from remote imac

I have an external drive physically attached to my main iMac.  I got my kids an iMac for Xmas.  Currently, my iPhoto library is on the external drive and I would like to share it with my kids iMac so they can add and view photos from their iMac.  I've turned on sharing in every place I can think of but continue to get an error on my kids iMac that says:
    Caution
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks,
    Stacey

There is no way to do it. It's not designed for networked access.

  • Need help with File Sharing and iPHOTO Library sharing........

I recently upgraded my imac and my macbook pro to Mavericks.
    I have some problems now.
Previously using iPHOTO when running I was able to see the other computers iphoto library on the left side bar.  I was able then to access the other computers iphoto library.  This is no longer showing the other computers library from either computer.
When I try to access the other computers files using file sharing I get a message that permisions are missing.
It then asks if I want to fix permisions ,  I say yes....it will run for an hour and do nothing...I need to force quit.
I really dont want to use the cloud to do this sharing....why should I upload into the internet when I have the computers on same network.
Is there any place I can go to find how this is now done?  Before I didnt need to look up a thing....was just intuitive .  Now Im running into walls every way I try to share the iphoto libraries across computers.

The iPhoto sharing that was in the previous version doesn't seem to exist. There is now iCloud Photo Sharing.

I don't know about the file sharing issue.

  • HT1198 iPhoto Library Sharing Fail

I'm trying to share the iPhoto library across two accounts, but following the step-by-step directions in this article yields complete failure at Step 6, when it announces "The disk image should automatically mount" which means nothing to me. Double-click what if it hasn't mounted? Where? And, you can't drag the iPhoto Library anywhere from the Finder list, so how do you drag it at all to a new location?
Yet another example of an Apple walkthrough that doesn't work.

Amusing. You don't understand concepts like mounting disks and don't know how to drag the iPhoto Library, yet it's Apple who have created a walkthrough that doesn't work? No chance that it might be a lack of basic knowledge on your part? No?
A disk is said to mount when it becomes available in the Finder so you can drag things to or from it.
And the iPhoto Library is as draggable as any other object in the Finder, so I have no idea what you're referring to there.
Perhaps this is beyond your computer comfort zone and you might need to take a class.

  • Library Shared Between Two Users- Problems with Artwork

My iTunes library is located in the Shared folder so that I can reach it from two different log-ins, and both have (or should have) the same access privileges, but for some reason I can only change the artwork when I'm logged into one of the accounts. When I log into the other account, the artwork options are grayed out. Any advice on how to fix this problem?

The problem with that method is you are sharing the same set of media files, but you each have your own iTunes databases, so you get that issue where songs added in one account do not show up automatically in the other. Likewise, one account can delete stuff and the other account won't know.
If you don't have a need to have both accounts accessing the iTunes library at the same time (meaning if you use fast switching, then each user would have to remember to close iTunes first), you can relocated the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the shared folder (not just the iTunes Music folder). Then use these instructions to open the library from that location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
If both accounts use the above to point to the same library, you will both be using the exact same database files so what is done in one account is automatically there for the other account to see. However the downside is since both account use the same database files, you can not have both accounts running iTunes at the same time since both will be trying to access and write to the same file at the same time (bad thing). In addition, this also doesn't allow you to have different sets of playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc. Same database, so you would both have to see the same set of info including those.
If you rather stick to the old method of the same media files but separate database files, then you will have to continue to manually add stuff to the other account after importing from the first account to the media folder.
