IPhoto Library shows as a folder and not a package

helping a client upgrade to a new intel imac from an iMac G5
iphoto tells him it can't open his photo library using this version of iphoto, and that iphoto must be reinstalled.
i found a great fix in these forums that involved going into Show Package Contents
BUT.....his iPhoto Library is actually a folder It isn't a properly-blessed package. Therefor the new iPhoto '11 won't even open it.
How can I fix this??

(that is for some reason no longer a "package")
What version are you upgrading from? Version 6 and earlier did not use the Package format.
Did you trash the receipts before re-installing?
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

  • IPhoto Library in the Shared folder?

Isn't it possible to place the iPhoto library in the shared folder and then under each user account, link their iPhoto library to it, granting them both full permissions to the files?
I know I've done this once before, but I recall I had to do something tricky with permissions, possibly involving the Terminal

If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Finally: If you’re comfortable in the Terminal, and understand File Permissions, ACL’s etc., some folks have reported success using the process outlined here . (Note this page refers to 10.4, but it should also work on 10.5). If you’re not comfortable with the terminal, and don’t know an ACL from the ACLU, then you’re best doing something else... Oh, and the warning about simultaneous users still applies.

  • If I use a backup machine that has a folder of my iphoto library, can I delete my Iphoto library without the machine updating and deleting the photos as well?

Hey everyone, I have a Lacie 1 TB back up machine that I use to backup every once in a while everything I have in my macbook pro.
I don't know if there's a difference between a hard disk in which you save whatever you want or a back up machine that backs up whatever you have in your computer once you connect it, so, My question is the following:
Having backed up my Iphoto (I checked if there's a folder in the machine with all my photos), can I now get rid of all my photos in the laptop so there's more space? If I delete my photos (in Iphoto), does the back up machine automatically update its folders and delete my saved iphoto contents as well?
    Thank you!
I'm doing this because my laptop is running really slow lately and makes a lot of noise (like an airplane getting ready for take off) even though I've used it for a year.
    I use a Macbook pro 15''
    OS X Version 10.8.4
processor: 2.2 GHz intel core i7
    Memory 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Startup disk : macintosh HD

    Okay:
Except an arrow turning in circle near the ''wireless'' or ''sound'' symbols on the top of the screen. If I click on it, I see ''enter time machine'', ''back up now'', ''open time machine preferences''.
You're using Time Machine to back up to the External Disk.
    Back to your first question:
Having backed up my Iphoto (I checked if there's a folder in the machine with all my photos), can I now get rid of all my photos in the laptop so there's more space?
    No.
Time Machine keeps a rolling back up of your data. Eventually, anything you delete from your Mac will be deleted from iPhoto too.
If space is an issue then get another HD. They're not expensice and you can put your iPhoto Library on it.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Tell iphoto to view photos from a predefined folder and not copy them

    Hi!
I am using iphoto 09 and was wondering if we can tell iphoto to take photos from a particular folder and not copy the photos in its own set of folders. I don't want to have duplicates.
I already had structured my folders in a certain way and I don't want Iphoto copying them again.
    tanks!

Best way of working: Recreate your folders in the iPhoto Window and forget about your own.

  • I used a terminal command to show the Library in the User folder, and now the Finder is behaving erractically.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the show library terminal command?

I used a terminal command in Lion to show the LIbrary in the Users folder, and now the Finder is behaving erratically, hanging up and becoming almost paralyzed.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the terminal command for show Library.  The command I used was:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

Showing the Library folder will not cause the problem you've described. Nevertheless:
    chflags hidden ~/Library
will hide the folder. To reveal the folder:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Note, there is no "/" after Library.

    Galdaplh,
What do you mean by "reverting to photo"?  "Revert" is not a function in Aperture so you must be talking about something else.
If you just performed the import of that many photos, Aperture will take some time to generate thumbnails.  You can see if it is doing this sort of thing by {Command}-{Shift}-0 to show the Activity window.
Once Aperture generates all its thumbnails, you will have nearly instantaneous access to much, much better thumbnails than Aperture uses immediately after importing photos.

  • IPhoto library shows 500mb of data, but finder shows 2.2G of data

    Hi all,
I'm not a newbie and I read a lot of threads already, this is something really new.
iPhoto says that my library has xxx number of files totalling up to 500mb of photo's. But if I use finder and look at the properties of the iPhoto library folder, it shows that the folder is 2,2Gig large. Upon inspection, I found photo's that should've been deleted a long time ago and worse is, they don't show up on iPhoto!!! So now I can't remove these photo's and I dunno what to do.
I can't burn a back up and start from scratch, because when I want to burn with iPhoto, it also burns these images on the DVD.

    Tensai,
the fastest way would be to highlight library in the source column
share> export. They are exported in one lump sum. Kind of messy if you ask me. I tried it once and was shocked...ha
I also have no idea how that lump sum of images will import back into iPhoto either. They will probably be imported as one large roll....messy messy!
Let me tell you what i do in case you want to do this in the future.
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD in nice dated folders.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • I want to create a back up of my iPhoto library on an external hard drive (not Time Machine).  How do I do that?, I want to create a back up of my iPhoto library on an external hard drive (not Time Machine).  How do I do that?

I want to create a back up of my iPhoto library on an external hard (not the time machine backup).  I've searched the iPhoto help, but unfortunately it does not tell me 'how' to create this additional backup of my library.  Thanks

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Time Machine backup of external iPhoto library shows recent photos only as outline, no image. Any suggestions?

The Time Machine backup of my external iPhoto library shows all pictures 'now' but previous backups show the most recent pictures only as box outlines, some with a curled corner. How can I see all pictures to make sure TM has them? And if I would need to restore photos from TM can I do this one picture at a time or only the whole library? If I upgrade to iPhoto 11, a more recent OS, or both, do the answers to any of these questions change?
    Many thanks!

You can not use the iPhoto library while it is a TM backup - you must restore it to use it - and you must restore it all

  • Tried to copy my iphoto library from my old mac and I get 7 times more photos???

I had under 5,000 photos in my old iPhoto library on my old mac pro desktop.
After I tried to import the old library into my new iPhoto library (on my new mac i7 running Mavericks), iPhoto ended up with over 35,000 photos.
iPhoto was literally creating events for single photos when the old iPhoto library never had such events. I already tried doing a search in this forum and googling but didn't come across a similar issue. The names of the events were gibberish as in the names of folders you would see if you controlled clicked and selected "show package contents" and drilled way down.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Sounds like you imported the library into iPhoto on the new machine.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Hopefully someone can help me with my question.  When I try to add photos from PhotoStream into my iPhoto Library a message appears asking to view the photo in the library (as if it were already imported).  When I click View it brings me to my iPhoto library but the photo(s) are not there?

How exacly are you trying to import from the Photo Stream? Dragging from the stream to the events? Ctrl-clicking or right clicking?
If "Show in Library" does not show the event, then your iPhoto Library may need repairing or rebuilding;  try to run the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools, if you have not already done so. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it:    Rebuild iPhoto Library Version 11:

  • Sorry folks, I did something bad, I was looking how to save my current iphoto library to my external drive and I hit a wrong button, lost my current iphoto and now have only the backed up version from 2007, Woops I never was the quick witted one... PLEASE

I switched my current iphoto library out for the saved one on my external drive by mistake. It said, Switch Libraries.... Do you want to switch the current iphoto library from AAA iphoto library (what I called the old one I guess - in my OWC) toOWC Mercury on-the-go and relaunch iphoto? cancel or relaunch
Sorry, I was looking for a way to save my current iphoto images to my hard drive. Yeah, I guess just drag something over right? Anyway, now I cannot retrieve my last 2 or 3 years of photos, Can You HELP me?
    Mac os X  version 10.6.8
2.66 GHz Intel core 2 Duo
    etc

Depress the option key and launch iPhoto = use teh select library option and select the correct one
yes to move your library to an external drive
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
