IPhoto library update issues.

Hi all,
I recently bought a new iMac and used the time machine backups from my MBP to migrate my programs, files, etc. to the new machine during the setup process. For some reason, the brand new machine was running really slow and the Apple folks had me do a clean install. The only problem that has arisen is that my iPhoto library was updated to a newer version during the transfer over to Mountain Lion on the iMac (I run Snow Leopard on my MBP) and now I can't access my photos. The photos were deleted from the iMac during the reinstall and when I try to opne iPhoto on my MBP it says I need to update to a newer version of iPhoto. In order to do so, however, I would need to upgrade the laptop to Mountain Lion. Is there a way to recover the photo library without having to spend more money?
Thanks much.

I'm using OS Extended 10.9.5.  I don't know what the original version of iPhoto was.

Have you run the iPhoto Library Upgrader? You need to direct it to the location of your old iPhoto Library by clicking the "Choose Library" button in the lower right corner of the panel you are seeing when the upgrade starts.

  • IPhoto update - Library update issues

I updated the latest iPhoto software (for one Aperture and iPhoto library). After downloading the software and starting up iPhoto, it requested to update the library, it then apparently goes through 9 steps and my Mac has been on that task for the past 20 hours. I did the same on my Macbook Pro and the library update only took a little while. The difference is that I have about 1,500 photos on my Macbook but about 30,000 on the Mac. I imagine it wojld take longer because the library is so much bigger, but mnore than 20 hours?? I'm afraid to force quit for fear of damaging or losing some of my photos.
I do not use Aperture so there can't be a conflict
    Any advise?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto Library Copy Issues

    Hello all,
I'm having some issues copying (backing up) my iPhoto library to an external disk and I really hope somebody can help!
I usually make a monthly backup of my iPhoto library to an external drive and did so before going on vacation a few weeks ago. It's always copied with no problems whatsoever. I just came back from vacation and added about 25GB of new photos (long vacation!) and the only thing I did differently with my new imported photos was that I used HoudahGeo to add GPS data to my new photos. I'm not sure if that would cause a problem, but the library seems to be functioning fine when I use it.
I went to make a backup of my iPhoto library to my usual Mac OS Journaled external disk (A Western Digital 3TB 3.5" drive in a Firewire 800 cradle), but the transfer stalled (or at least severely slowed down) at around 1.4GB and the timer went from several hours up to several days. I thought that was strange, so I canceled the transfer. I tried a different disk (a Seagate 320GB drive), but same thing so I went back tried my original drive again. No luck. I tested my drive by copying another large file (iTunes library) and it copied with no problem. Strange, I thought.
I repaired disk permissions on Mac OSX and copied again, but it didn't seem to help. I then repaired disk permissions on iPhoto using the repair menu, but no difference there either. Then I repaired the iPhoto library using the last option on the repair menu, but it didn't seem to help either! It always stalls around 1.4GB and I cancel.
I thought that maybe it was a Finder issue, so in the end I used terminal (cp -R) to copy the library and that worked, but the size of the finished library file is much bigger than what my finder is currently reporting for the original. It's 551GB vs. the original 289GB.
My software is up to date with: Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and iPhoto 9.5.1.
If somebody can help me, I'd be so grateful! I'm moving back to America soon and want to sell my iMac here and get a new one back home. I need to be able to move this iPhoto library to an external drive since I destroyed my pre-vacation backup when I cancelled my fist copy attempt!
    Thanks so much!

This is a finder issue, copying from disk to disk is a finder operation.
One way around it is to use a back up app like Chronosync to make the copy for you - that will deal with permissions kludges and so on.
Going forward, copying the whole library every time as a back up is - as I'm sure you've noticed - slow and tedious. Consider Using an app that will do incremental back ups. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Does second option / click  iPhoto library update with original library

I am going to create another iTunes and iPhoto library with the options - click method and was checking to make sure that when ever a update or new version is installed that both are effected.
Otherwise what is needed to be done or can someone give me a link to copy for instructions.
    Greg

Updates affect the application, not the library or libraries. If a new version requires a new library, each separate library will be upgraded the first time that you use it. This is a non-issue --- you can ignore it and iPhoto will take care of you.

  • Trouble with iPhoto Library Updater

I've read all the posts on this subject but can't find my problem. When I run the Library Updater, the libraries I want to open are greyed out. If I click on a library on the desktop, it tells me I have to install the updater. I'm stumped!

I did not sent you the email.  It was automatically sent by the ASC forum.  That is an image that I added but then delete from my last post before posting.  How it got in the email is anyone's guess.
The contents of that folder appear to be normal for an iPhoto 6 library.  You should be able to launch the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 with the Option key held down, navigate to that folder and select it for updating.
You are saying that that  the iPhoto Italy2 library folder is grayed out in the upgrader's window?  How is the volume MEDIA formatted.  It must be OS X Extended (journaled) for iPhoto or the upgrader to work.  If that volume is not formatted correctly move the folder to your boot drive and try from there.

  • HT5037 iPhoto Library Upgrade Issues

I recently purchased a new iMac that came with iPhoto 9.3.1 installed. I migrated files from an older Mac to my iMac. When I try to open iPhoto I got a message the I needed to install an iPhoto Library Upgrade. I found the upgrade and installed it. I still received the same message. I discovered an iPhoto update to 9.3.2 in the Mac App Store and installed it hoping that it would fix the problem. No such luck. I still receive the iPhoto library upgrade notice. So I downloaded and installed the library upgrade again. Still no luck. In the end, I removed my iPhoto libraries from the Pictures directory and iPhoto started right up. All of my photos are still in tact, only the libraries I organized them into are lost. If you are not able to revert back to an older version of iPhoto, which I am not able to do, this appears to be the only way to fix this problem. Fortunately, I did not have many libraryies set up in iPhoto.
I hope this is helpful to some of you who are in the same boat.
    Paul

Backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the library

  • IPhoto library "updated" now Events appear unmerged

This afternoon, I was working in iPhoto when there was a nanosecond power blip at the house. I wouldn't have even noticed it except my iMac shut off. When I booted up again, iPhoto opened itself and repaired the library (if I'm remembering the terminology correctly). Problem is, now many of my Events show a blank thumbnail (unless I scroll over it) and maybe more importantly, many of my merged Events seem to have unmerged or duplicated themselves. (Can't say for sure what's going on.) I have 10 years worth of photos in my Events; it took me hours get everything organized when I migrated to Apple earlier this year. I don't relish the idea of painstakingly trying to sort through thousands of events again.
My albums all appear OK, for what it's worth. It's just the Events that are messed up.
Is there any way to reverse the repair or update?
    Kelly

The following will give you a new library with the same events buy no keywords, titles or other metadata or albums, slideshows, etc.
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2.  Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

  • IPhoto library mapping issues on home network

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have my iPhoto 8 library stored on PowerMac G4 that acts as media server for the house. Each Mac automatically mounts the media drive when the appropriate user logs in and each copy of iPhoto has been 'mapped' to the iPhoto library located on the media server.
The problem - occasionally, and I can not figure what causes it - but when my wife logs in and opens iPhoto, she gets the good old "Please select the library or create a new one" window. Bless her heart, I've tried to explain how to 'remap' the library - but it's just....well, lets just say I have failed in my communications and explanations.
So - why does this library mapping 'unmap' and how can I force it to stay 'mapped'??? I've tried several Automator actions and even tried the Record function - no dice.
Any ideas would be much appreciated because she's on the verge of firing the home network administrator which equates to a reduced IT budget in the future.
    Thanks for your time!
    jc

    John:
Are all the Macs using the same library? Is this a wireless network or hard wired?
The library can get unmapped if iPhoto is launched with the server not mounted and accessible.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto library import issue - answer can't be found anywhere else

Hi, just downloaded the trial of Aperture. I am attempting to import my iPhoto library and regardless of whether the location is maintained as references to the iPhoto library or set to the Aperture library when I click import nothing actually imports.
I have checked the iPhoto settings and all seems to be set correctly and also the online seminars and discussions but still no answer. Would it be because I am using the trial version?
    Your thoughts please!
    Thanks,
    Ben

Do a little test to make sure you've got your iPhoto library correct. In Aperture go to File>Import>Images. With the {X} set pm Local Files, navigate to the iPhoto library you are using. Then you should see a list of all of your Albums, and if you click on Library, you will see your Events. You can import a few (I would suggest just setting "Store Files" to "In their current location" to avoid duplication) Folders or Events and then see if they appear in Aperture. This is in fact how I store my 40K image library. I keep it all in iPhoto and reference just the albums I need to work on from Aperture.
    Good Luck!

  • IPhoto 11 update issues.

.  I upgraded to the new version and imported photos,  then switched Photo Stream on,  and then when trying to view my library it just hangs and gives me the beach ball spinning and spinning etc.
I have looked at a few responses on the forum and downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager but that also just hangs and gives me an error [trying it again now to see what the error is]
    I have tried this below:
    iPhoto Keeps Crashing
If you are ever experiencing repeated iPhoto crashing, rather than reinstalling the entire program, which would necessitate reimporting all the pictures (which, granted, is an option, and, depending on how much content you have in your library, may be the easiest one), first try deleting the plist file. This stands for "property list" and contains personal settings, such as the location of your library and various user settings (much like the cache does in an Internet browser). By deleting the plist file, you are forcing iPhoto to restore the factory defaults. It can be located by going to your hard drive, users, your name, library, then preferences. Locate the com.apple.iphoto.plist file and delete it. You may need to rebuild your library after this step, which is a fairly simple process. Press the Apple and the options keys when you restart iPhoto, then select to rebuild the library database from the automatic back-up.
but in the library,  preferences folder I do not have the com.apple.iphoto.plist file.  I can find the .ilife09.plist file.  Is this the same file?
I do not have a backup of my library - stupid i know,  but I need to access my photos.
    Please help

this is the error I get with iPhoto Library Manager after about 10 mins of trying to rebuild the library
    Apple event timed out ('core'/'getd' (returnID 1) { ---- = object specifier: {objectClass = 'ipal'; keyForm = 'indx'; keyData = 'abso'($73726966$); container = (null)}})

  • IPhoto Library Manager issues

Last month I downloaded this software called Sponge to get rid of duplicated pictures. I had about 6000+ pictures then. Now when it found a duplicated pic, they went in the trash and I kept it in there till I got the job done. So then I opened my iPhoto and to my surprise almost all of my pics had the exclamation point. I got really scared. So I checked the Pictures>iPhoto Library folder and all my pics are still there. So thankfully I still had all the duplicated pics in the trash, so I pulled them out and imported them back to iPhoto thinking that will solve the problem. That only made things worse! Now I have over 11000 pics and still exclamation points!
So I have been reading all the forums here and they say to use the iPhoto Library Manager . So i have used that but i have some problems with it. It seems like it is rebuilding my library but it always stops because its running out of room. I know i need to delete some pics but if i do that what will happen?
I was also wondering : If I take everything out of iPhoto , will it also be gone in the iPhoto Library Folder?
I'm just so confused on which approach I should take to recover my beloved pics.
Thanks for all your help in advance

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Your problem begins here:
Last month I downloaded this software called Sponge to get rid of duplicated pictures.
Using this on your iPhoto Library Folder has broken the cardinal rule of using iPhoto: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
This app does not understand iPhoto and so it has damaged your Library:
    Unfortunately you compounded the problem:
I still had all the duplicated pics in the trash, so I pulled them out and imported them back to iPhoto thinking that will solve the problem. That only made things worse! Now I have over 11000 pics and still exclamation points!
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. Re-importing the files will mean new files, it will not reconnect the old one.
You have a back up, right? These are your beloved pics, so you've got them backed up? The easiest solution to this mess is to restore from your back up and overwrite the ruined Library.

  • IPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager Issue With Faces

I use iPhoto ’11. I just recently imported some photos from my iMac iPhoto to my Macbook using the product iPhoto Library Manager. I thought everything went well until closer inspection. A lot of the faces in the imported library are off meaning for example, the people may be in the centre of the photo but the face tags are off to the left or right.
I thought I would manually try to fix this. However when I try to “add a face”, it looks like it’s going to work until I leave the photo and come back to it. The face tag has disappeared. Also on some photos, I can’t even click “add a face”. A few of the pictures say there is an unnamed face but there isn’t.
Any suggestions? Would it help if I reinstalled iPhoto 11?
    Tom

If you export out of iPhoto with Format=JPEG and the checkboxes selected to include keywords you can keep the keywords, titles and descriptions. If you check the box for Locations I believe you will get the faces also but am not sure on that.
iPhoto Library Manager keeps keywords, titles, description and Faces and Places when it copes between libraries.  The fact that you had faces problems leads me believe that the library you were rebuilding with iPLM was damaged initially.
But you could check that out very easily.  Create a new library, import about 10 photos and identify the faces in them.  Then rebuild that library with iPLM.  If it comes up the same then there's a problem with iPLM.  It it comes up good then the original library was the culprit.

  • IPhoto library update fails after Yosemite install

I have installed Yosemite 10.10.2 and iPhoto  Library upgrade is required when I try to open iPhoto. Upgrade process runs but does not complete. Progress meter gets within a gnats nadger of completing, but then stops. I have done all the usual things to try and restart etc. but to no avail. I have tried accessing Time Machine to go back and unravel the Picture files but it also seems that I can't go any further back than yesterday in time machine. As things stand I cannot see any of my some 20,000 images stored in the Library. I hope someone can help. Mel A.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
