IPhoto library went to screen-saver

I was trying to add a photo to my screen saver. I got a message saying my thumbnails were outdated. I clicked to ignore the message and ---- everything vanished! At least they were not deleted. Instead, I found that all my photos had jumped from iPhoto folders or rolls to a new folder in my screen saver directory. They all seem to be there, but I can't figure out how to send them back to iPhoto! Any hints or suggestions?
Jay

Hi Jay, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
Where does that leave us now?

  • IPhoto not working as screen saver in OS X 10.9.4

    I have upgraded two Macs to OS X 10.9.4 and am now no longer able to use folders from my iPhoto library as screen savers. The reboot solution another user found is not working on either of these computers. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

    Hello Ursula,
    If I understand your problem correctly you would like to choose one of your folders (not an event) from iPhoto to be your screen saver. I had the same issue and found the solution. I am running OS X 10.9.4 and iPhoto 9.5.1 on a mbp. Go to:
    •"System Preferences";
    •"Desktop & Screen Saver";
    •"Screen Savor";
    •Choose one of the viewing options from the left panel e.g. "floating"/"flip-up"/"ken burns";
    •Once you chose a viewing option a "Source:" drop down menu will appear in the right pane. (note the "source" drop down menu is not visible until you chose a viewing option;
    •From the "Source" choice "photo library";
    •You should now see all the pictures from your iPhoto including the folders you have made;
    •Click the folder and then click the "choose" button.
    I hope this helps!

    I am trying to use my iPhoto pictures as my screen saver on my mac book air.  Many of the pictures' heads are cut off.  How do I get the pictures to fit the screen properly without the pictures be distorted?

    Open the screen saver control panel. Right above the preview window there's a popup menu. You'll probably want to set it to "Fit to screen" so the pictures will be resized to show on the display.

  • Iphoto not working with screen saver

    Ever since I upgrade to 10.6.2, my screen saver will not allow me to use pictures in iphoto. When I click on a folder to use, it gives me a message "unable to use iphoto please contact vendor for screen saver upgrade" or very close to that. HUH? Isn't apple my vendor for both? Any ideas on how to go back to using my photos as my screen saver?

    My guess is that ILMediaBrowser is referring to the iLife Media Browser. You might run Software Update and see if you somehow missed an update to it. However, if it worked with a new iPhoto Library I think the iLife Media Browser is probably OK, but there is something funky in the innards of your original iPhoto Library that is crashing the Media Browser.
    You could try holding the Command and Option keys down, then launch iPhoto from the Applications folder. Keep holding the keys until it asks you if you want to rebuild. There are list of items to be checked, click on the ones that sound likely to help matters.

  • Aperture Library in "Desktop & Screen Saver" now, but resolution off

    My Aperture library now show up in Media Browser and Desktop & Screen Saver, but the resolution of images, particularly when selecting them for desktop backgrounds are too low. I'm not getting the full resolution images. Any idea what the deal is? Do I need to reprocess something?

    Bobio,
    The pictures you see for selection in Desktop and Screen Saver from from the *Media Browser*. It is the same mechanism you use for sharing pictures with any application on your machine.
    If Aperture photos are not available there, you probably have previews turned off. Look in the Aperture Preferences for that. However, previews are not automatically generated until you quit Aperture. I.e., Aperture does not spend time making your photos available for other applications when it knows you are using Aperture.
    If neither of those ideas pans out, I would suggest following the [Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805].

  • Convert all Raws in my iPhoto Library to jpg to save space ?

    Hi ,
    I want to back up my all iPhoto library somewhere in the cloud, something like google Drive or Drop Box .
    currently my iPhoto library folder is over 180Go , over 10 years of Photo and videos
    a lot of those photo are in RAW but really I would be happy to only have them as jpg doing some test that would reduce them by almost 5-10x from 25Mo to 3-4Mo
    I was hoping that I could just make a Smart Folder just pointing to all my RAW photo , select them say : convert to jpg ( in-place ) and for iPhoto to keep them all into they Events but I couldn't really see anyting like that ?
    what is my best options ?
    Ideally I would reduce my Library a little under 100Go this way I can go on slighty cheaper packes .
    Any tip on the best way to do that would be most welcome !
    Thanks
    Damien

    Really don't mind keep the RAW for local storate HDD are cheap but even with a Time Capsule I really feal that I need Cloud backup . and RAW quickly add space just trying to keep my lib to a resonable size so I can have a cloud backup for it .
    currently think I will settle for a GDrive of 200Go will see if I can slim the copy of the iPhoto libs and keep my main one with the full photos ..
    Thanks for your help

  • So I'm in a bit of a doozy here. My entire iPhoto library went, poof.  Did Apple ID suspension cause this? Help!

    After frantically searching for the cause of this catastrophe, i found an email from apple in my junk mail saying my appleiD was being suspended for security reasons (surely apple wouldnt junk their own mail) so I immediatly confirmed my email with them followed the steps hoping that my library would come back! No avail. It did say you woulnt be able to use ecrtain apps until you conformed but why arent my photos back? I confirmed? I've don't the IfileX trick, no luck. Ive searched for file names, the entire library, not just the contents is gone. I've done a trillion different google'd methods of finding it. Nada. I was asked to make a new library when I opened it, my old one was gone so Iphoto was acting like I hadnt used it before. Blank. I had so many precious photos on there, I know about time machine ect ect but I just forgot to back it up. My bad, but still. Time machine shouldnt be an issue because my library shouldnt be gone
    Desperatly want this issue fixed.

    This has nothing to do with that email. Apple would never threaten a user like this
    It did say you woulnt be able to use ecrtain apps until you conformed
    and it would have no way to prevent the app running on your machine. I would guess that you have fallen victim to a phishing attempt. You need to change all your passwords immediately.
    Given that you 'forgot' to back up, it's hard to see a good outcome from this.

  • Why is my iPhoto library no longer an option for Screen Saver in Mavericks?

    My Screen Saver no longer pulls random photos from my selected iPhoto library. When I went into System Preferences --> Screen Saver I no longer see iPhoto folders as a Screen Saver option. Was a change made with Mavericks? When I try to select my Pictures -> iPhoto Library from the Screen Saver it is greyed out.
    Thanks!

    There are no drivers.  I didn't have to install anything the first time around, there's nothing on the website that mentions OSX support.

  • Can I create an album of select photos to stream was screen saver when listening to my iTunes library on my apple tv

    I have a new apple tv that I am listening to my iTunes library. I have approx 800 photos in my iPhoto library. The screen saver chooses the same small number of photos and keeps on playing them over and over again. Can I expand the number of photos that are displayed? Can I create an album of photos to display?

    The screen saver uses the photo stream so if you can create a new stream and place the images you want the screen saver to show and then select that stream it shoudl do want you want.

  • Lost screen saver

    Hmmm, same thing here in the last post...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1268698?start=0&tstart=0
    I haven't found a solution yet, and it seems like some OS component is munged, but maybe something to try before an Archive & Install...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup),  use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, then trash these files.
    I think the files that affect this, or could, are...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost /com.apple.preference.displays.<12digitHex#>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<12digitHex Number>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.slideshow.< 12digitHexNumber>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost /com.apple.windowserver.<12digitHex#>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.<12digitHex#>. plist
    There may be more than one of each of the above
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffec t .plist
    /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopscreensaver.rsspictures .plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect .plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    Then reboot once more.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    If it happens in every user account it's likely just the root Library ones that need trashing.
    If it only happens in one account then just the user ones need trashing.

  • Why does iPhoto Screen Saver say "The selected source contains no pictures"?

    After upgrading to Lion, I noticed that I can no longer use iPhoto albums as a screen saver. At first when loading the Screen Saver preference page, the iPhoto Screen Saver doesn't show up at all. After a bit, I can see "iPhoto" as an option, but if I select it I see a message in the preview pane that says "The selected source contains no photos. Please choose a new source that contains pictures or add images to the source." There are of course plenty of images in iPhoto already. Any ideas?

    I have had some similar problems.   I think mine were cause by "interference" from my Apple TV.   By any chance do  you have an Apple TV?    I first notice the problem after viewing photos on my Apple TV as a screen show.   When I was finished I just changed my TV back to the cable box, but did not do anything to the Apple TV.  When I had the problem I went back to the Apple and switched it to something other than photos.   Now my sceen saver shows photos again.    I am guessing that the Apple TV some how locks the file such that the screen save can not get to it.
    Good luck.

  • Screen Saver will not recognize photos in iPhoto

    I changed the name of a few photos in iPhoto (I have thousands) and now the screen saver prefernce panel says that I have no photos in any folder. In iPhoto all the pictures seem to be present. Any suggestion as to how to access the iPhoto photos for my screen saver.

    Where did you change the name of the photos?
    Navigate to the iPhoto Library folder (when iPhoto is closed)
    Drag the Album.xml file to the desktop.
    Launch iPhoto so it will rebuild the file.
    Now check Screensaver preferences and see if it helped.
    You can also highlight an album within iPhoto and click the desktop icon. This will open screensaver preferences where the album you chose within iPhoto will be chosen to use a desktop or screensaver.

  • HT204379 Why does my screen saver "zoom" in on photos from my iPhoto?  Can I stop it from doing this?

    I've recently moved up to Mtn Lion on a new MacBook Pro.
    I finally figure out how to connect my iPhoto images with my screen saver (the way I alswyas did on previous Macs).
    But the weird thing is that the Screen Saver zooms in on the photos!  Sometime choosing a very uninteresting part of the photo to suddenly enlarge on my screen!
    What gives with that?  Can I stop it from doing this?  It's like cropping my originals - many of which I have already cropped ...
    Appreciate any help that you can give on this.

    The only fix here is to find a third-party screen saver that supports the behavior you want. Apple has adjusted its screen saver options over the years, and the latest ones are what you see in the system preferences.
    The only way to change these behaviors is to hack the screen savers. The effects descriptions and some of the behaviors have settings in this folder:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Slideshows.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Cont ent
    There may be a way to modify one of those settings to prevent the zooming for the given set of screen savers (or at least one of them), but I would not recommend modifying these files arbitrarily as you might break something (or at least make sure you have a full and restorable backup you can access before doing so). There are a couple of known modifications to them that can adjust some behaviors, but image zooming isnt one I know of.
