IPhoto locks up and closes.

New Mac user.  Working with iphoto using "edit" feature.  When I try to return to the picture group after "editing" using the back arrow in the upper left corner of frame it locks up, goes astray etc.  Then it shuts down.  I get a nice dialogue box telling me that iphoto shut down and will notify Apple of the mishap.  But that hardly helps me today.  Thought I escaped these problems when I left PC-land.  I'm nervous about my investment.
So, what now coach??

Greetings,
Questions:
How long have you been using iPhoto and has this been happening the whole time or is it a recent change?
What version of iPhoto are you using (iPhoto > About iPhoto)?
Does this behavior happen with all images in your library or just a certain set? (try images at the bottom and the top of the library to test)
You may have added a corrupt set of images to iPhoto.
Try this test:
Go to File > Import to Library
At the top of the import window click on the drop down menu and choose "Macintosh HD"
Navigate to Library > Desktop Pictures and import this folder (you can delete the images from iPhoto when you are done).
Try your editing / navigation steps with this new set of images.
If it works, that means the issue is with these images.
If it does not work that may indicate an issue with your iPhoto Library.
Reply back with your results and we'll offer suggestions.
Cheers.

  • Iphoto locks up and refuses to finish photo import from iphone 4 when there is a video present.

Iphoto locks up when attempting to import photos from iPhone 4 if there is a video file in the phone.  Previously, iPhoto would import videos from a camera.  What's the problem here?

I have the same problem as the upload from the Iphone takes a long time and the 'importing 30 photos' seems to be stuck.  Anyone have any idea what to do?

  • Iphoto locks up, and does not recognize our camera consistently

    Greetings, All,
We have two iMac computers, V10.6.8, and on one of them, iphoto continuously locks up and freezes.  We have to use a key command to escape this situation.  Also, sometimes, this same Mac does not recognize the Nikon camera which we've always used on it.  How do we remedy these problems, please?  Do we need to completely uninstall iPhoto, then reinstall it from Time Machine?  Thank you for any and all help you can send our way!  God Bless!

    Good Morning, All,
No ideas on how to take care of this situation, then?  Guess a trip to the nearest Mac store will be scheduled, and see if they can help us figure out why these two things are happening with iPhoto.  If we get it fixed there, I'll post a note here, so other who might be experiencing the same problems can learn the fix.  Take care, and God Bless!

  • I have recently installed Adobe XI Standard and it continues to lock up and close down the product?

We originally had Adobe 9 Standard installed and it never locked up, but with the newest version it appears to be a daily occurrence that it will lock up and shut down the program.  I have uninstalled the program completely and re-installed and that did not solve the problem.

Do you get the opportunity to see the complete error send data to Microsoft via an error dialog?  If so you can grab the Windows Error Log and post it here on the forums.

  • ITunes locks up and closes when trying to "Get Info" to edit Podcasts

Also having problems with ver 9. iTunes downloads and stores podcasts by the same author separately instead of placing them under the section for that series podcasts by the author. Then when I try to edit them so they will all be listed in one podcast heading it shuts down when I go to the "Get info" to edit. I guess this is actually two problems in one!
    Thanks for any suggestions!

  • IPhoto takes too long to open and close

I just updated to iPhoto 5.0.4 from 4.0.3 (using an iLife 05 disk) on my iBook G4 (specs below). I have about 10,000 photos in my library. It took 5 or more hours (I finally had to go to bed!) to update all my photos when the program first opened. This newer version opens, closes, and hides slower than the older version, up to 4 minutes sometimes. Also when open, it slows down other processes on the computer quite a bit. But so far, the processes I've tried to do within iPhoto have worked nicely, including rotating, editing, e-mailing, slideshow.
I have already deleted the .plist file, repaired permissions, and rebuilt the library (successfully) with iPhoto Library Manager, and of course restarted the computer several times. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to keep this program from clogging up my computer and running more quickly? If the only suggestion is to try reinstalling iPhoto 5, would it have to update all my photos again and would the reinstalled program look at my iPhoto library or the rebuilt library?
I have 4.7 GB of hard disk space left of a 60GB hard drive (which is really only 55GB). iPhoto seems to be automatically looking at the rebuilt library now. I guess Library Manager made it that way?? So another question is can I just drag my original iPhoto library from my "Pictures" folder to the trash? This would free up about 15GB.

Thanks so much, TD, for your quick reply. I have about 25 albums. Would you consider that "a lot"? Don't know if they are "smart" though. I just created each album and drug the appropriate photos from my library over to the folder icon of each one. I don't think that involves any of that "smart" stuff, does it?
What do you mean by "if you have all your Rolls open"? How do I "open" rolls or "close" them? I always leave the little triangle next to the "Library" in the left column closed. In that column, listed under the Library are the last roll, last 12 months roll, etc. then all my albums.
I will trash my original library and hopefully that will help some.

  • IPhoto 6 slow to open and close

I have a mac mini with an external drive connected via firewire. IPhoto 6 works really fast on the mac mini...no problems. I just got a new MacBook Pro and can mount the external drive...no problem.
When I open iphoto and point to the iPhoto library on the external drive, it takes forever to open. Once it is open, it is a bit sluggish, but works OK. Then it takes forever to close as well.
I didn't think the speed over Airport was that slow....am I wrong? Why the slowdown on the MacBook Pro and the mac mini is really fast? Thought it would be the other way around.
I called Apple Care and they had me reinstall Tiger...nothing changed. Please help. Thanks.

    Brent:
From the posts I've read about it accessing large data files like images over Airport is going to be rather slow. Close all of the rolls before closing and then see if that improves the closing and opening process. There's just a lot of data that has to be transferred.
Do check the Airport forum as there may be some tricks available that will help speed up the process.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • I imported about 300 RAW images yesterday and worked with them for about an hour. iPhoto locked up on me and I rebooted. After I did the event icon is now gray and it says there are no photos. I know the photos are there. Any idea how I can recover them?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

Make a temporary, backup copy if you don't have a backup copy of the library (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4
    Launch iPhoto and try again.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

my iPad 2 started to backup iCloud and its now locked up. How do i unlock it, the button for settings and close are not working. What can I do?

    Try this.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Factory installed iPhoto says it's on a "locked disc" and won't allow acces

I have created four accounts on my Mac Book Pro 15". I have given all four administrator status.
iPhoto works great on the first account/the owner account. But on all the other accounts, it says it is "on a locked disc" and there is "no access" to any of the other 3 accounts on my laptop.
I have repaired all permissions and still "no access" persists.
Any suggestions? I have no parental controls in place that I know of. I am 64 and alone, no one on this laptop but me. So what can I tweak and where, and how. Speak as tho to a five year old because the whole Mac language/word and initial definitions are all new to me within the past 2 months. I am learning a whole new language, as well as a whole new operating system.

    Hi Jene,
That's weird. I wonder why they struck it out. It seems a quite accurate statement to me!
You gave very clear and easily understandable instructions that are perfect!
Except that I have already done that and more, and still only the first account on this laptop is able to gain any access at all to iPhoto.
So now, I am opening each of the folders contained in the application and "getting info" on each of them in turn, and changing permissions for all (except the infamous 'other' who we know is "root". I'm leaving that as it is.).
And I am also trying shifting the "owner" in each folder from the first user's name to "system".
When I log back in under the second user name we'll see if that has made the desired difference!
    Thanks for your help, Jene!
