IPhoto lost pictures from library

Greetings all.
I'm running OSX 10.9.2
and iPhoto 9.5.1
I do regular back ups and when I updated 2 days ago and then opened up iPhoto there are only a few seemingly random pictures left.
Upon searching my computer with finder for .jpg files I can find all my photo files still on the computer showing up under Desktop>Preview>(Master or thumbnail)>Then files are broken into files based on date.
How can I re-establish these files in the iPhoto library?
Thanks all!!

Ok... Here's something weird now.
I'm attempting to do the backup and it is showing my iphoto library as "Preview"
The "Preview" when selected selects as an iphoto library and contains the 20+GB of data consistent with my photos.
Why would it call it preview and not iPhoto library?

  • Iphoto loses pictures from library

Hope someone can help. I have no trouble importing pics from my camera or desktop into iPhoto. However, once I reopen iPhoto they've disappeared from the library and events. If I've put them into an album they're in there but no sign of them anywhere else!
    I've re-installed iPhoto09 but the same thing's happening.

    John
If I've put them into an album...
If they can be in an Album then they must be in an Event. Every photo in the Library is in an Event somewhere.
Also, if you can’t see them in an Event, how do you put them in a Library?
We sometimes see this apparently happen when the camera’s date is wrong and the photos end up in unexpected places in the Library.

  • IPhoto 9.6 doesn´t display any pictures from library, upgraded

iPhoto 9.6 doesn´t display any pictures from library. I have upgraded from an old iPhoto. I upgraded the Library also.
Everything is inside the Library I can see but when I run iPhoto I get only a yellow note on the screen and no pictures?

Everything is inside the Library I can see
Do you mean by looking into the library using the Finder?
but when I run iPhoto I get only a yellow note on the screen and no pictures?
Then iPhoto has probably opened a new, empty library, because it could not find or access your iPhoto library. What happens, whiny double-click the Library to open it directly?
Where is your iPhoto library stored? Is it in the Pictures folder or on an external drive?

  • I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

Are they taking space in all of these locations?
It depends on how you are using iPhoto and Aperture.
iPhoto and Aperture each create their own library files, and the default location for them is in /users/youruseraccount/Pictures
You can configure iPhoto and Aperture to use the same Library file, in which case your photos are only stored once.  But if you are using iPhoto & Aperture with independent library files, you may in fact be duplicating your storage.
The second consideration is whether or not you have configured iPhoto and/or Aperture as reference libraries, in which case their library files only reference photos you have stored in other places on your hard drive.  Setting them up as reference libraries does not duplicate the photos inside the library files.

  • When I'm trying to mirror on AppleTV instead of mirroring my iPod, a random picture from library pops up on the screen. How do you fix this? Has this happened to anyone else?

When using mirror on AppleTV instead of mirroring my iPod I get a random picture from library. How do you fix this?

No, that's not mirroring. As I said that's basic airplay. Mirroring is an entirely different function.
What model iPod do you have? Mirroring requires an iPod Touch 5th Generation.

  • Iphoto lost pictures after import

I just uploaded a couple thousand pictures form my iphone into iphoto. after completion, I clicked to have the imported photos deleted from the phone. During the deletion process, iphoto froze and I had to force quit the program. Now, I cant find my pictures in iphoto, and most of the pictures were deleted from the phone before the program froze.
any Idea's on how to find/get these pictures? I appriciate any help. thanks.

If the photos are in the library but not recognized by iPhoto there are a couple of things you can try.
Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If both of these fail try this third method:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Hopefully it will pick up those "missing" photos and include them in the import.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Lost pictures from external HDD

    Hello,
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
I tried to use the Disc Utility to repair the disc, it appeared to be OK. I tried to rebuild iPhoto previews (cmd*alt at iPhoto start) and it did not help.
Could you give me any advice, please?
    Regards
    Frank

I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
ExFAT is your problem. iPhoto requires the iPhoto Library to be on a drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).
See these documents:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
and Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture(or iPhoto)
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
What probably has happened is, that you created the library on that drive, but iPhoto could not write to it and wrote the image files to a temporary storage.   Check, if iPhoto created a new library in your Pictures folder instead. Did you reboot your Mac, since you imported the photos? If not, wait, unti you have checked the Caches and temporary directories, before you restart your mac, because that will erase any temporary files.

  • How do I repair a damaged time machine backup drive/remove pictures from library on locked/failing external drive

I have a WD 1TB external hard drive that I use as my time machine backup drive as well as to store a number of things including my iphoto library (due to its size of about 85 GB) as well as documents. I began using the WD 1TB external drive with my 2007 13" MacBook and when I purchased a brand new 13" MacBook Pro in 2013 I used the WD to transfer what I wanted to the new laptop. My new MacBook Pro is running OSX 10.8.4 (2.9 GHz Interl Core i7 with 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3) (not the retina display). The WD 1TB product # is WDBACX001... and it's only about one year old so I'm super bummed that it's failing and trying to take my life with it It has only ever been used with my two MacBooks, never with a PC.
The external WD was working fine until this week when I noticed that it wasn't appearing on my desktop. I rebooted, unplugged and replugged the WD drive in each USB portal, and still nothing. I ran Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk, which did force it to show up on the desktop again, though it made everything painfully slow. After running the repair function Disk Utility told me that the drive couldn't be repaired, and that I should backup whatever is on it and restore the WD drive. I managed to pull off most of the documents before it decided to freeze up my laptop (I had a couple of folders with a few documents each left), but I wasn't able to move the iphoto library over before the drive disappeared again. I got it back by running the repair option in disk utility, with the same message that the WD drive is failing and to back it up, and tried to move the iphoto library. It told me it would take 180+ days, and kept going up. I left it up anyway for about a day to see if it would change, and instead it gave an error message, and moved nothing. I can't open the library in iPhoto- it tells me it's on a locked disk. I checked the permissions and it's set to Read & write by me (the admin user) but then under that it says read only for "everyone." I can't get into the library to pull out my pictures, which I cannot afford to lose.
I would appreciate any help or advice on how to crack into my iphoto library on this failing drive to remove the pictures. I read a lot about DiskWarrior but I also read that it won't work on newer macs (anything after June of 2012 supposedly), so I'm wondering if that's true or not, and if not is that a good program to use?
I can't afford to take it to a professional right now, so any help or advice would be so greatly appreciated! Also if anyone then could suggest the best way to back up in two places (digitally and perhaps a better brand of external drive) it would be amazing.
If you need more info let me know!

If you're very lucky, you might be able to salvage the drive mechanism, and the data, by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Lost pictures from book

I would sure appreciate some help on this. We build a book on Sunday and when we looked at it today all of the photos are gone! What could have made that happen? How do I get them back. We still have the photos in Events, so I cant understand where they went from the book. We laid out 98 pages and the layouts are there just not the pics.

    Ragmore:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unless you have a backup copy of either the iPhoto LIbrary package of the Library6.iPhoto database file made at a time when the book was fully populated with the pictures you're out of luck. The dB file is where all of the book (and other items like cards, calendars, etc.) information is kept. What apparently has happened is that the dB file was damaged somehow and didn't keep the book information.
To prevent this type of loss in the future see the tip at the end of my signature below. Use the application like you would use the Save command in a text editor, frequently after changes have been made. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, only idle. I keep it in the Dock and click on it after every import or change to a book, card, etc.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto lost connection to Library

I've had my iPhoto Library on my external hard drive for quite some time without problems. But suddenly, iPhoto has 0 photos. It seems to have lost connection to the Library completely. The photos are all still in tact on the hard drive. But how do I re-connect the 2?

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the Externa.
