Iphoto lost pictures

Just gone into iphoto and found all the pictures can be viewed as thumbnail but will not expand. Photos seem to be in trash.  How can I recover.  Mac had just done an upgrade?

Is it in the iPhoto sidebar trash, or is it on the Mac OS X Dock trash?

  • IPhoto lost pictures from library

    Greetings all.
    I'm running OSX 10.9.2
    and iPhoto 9.5.1
I do regular back ups and when I updated 2 days ago and then opened up iPhoto there are only a few seemingly random pictures left.
Upon searching my computer with finder for .jpg files I can find all my photo files still on the computer showing up under Desktop>Preview>(Master or thumbnail)>Then files are broken into files based on date.
How can I re-establish these files in the iPhoto library?
    Thanks all!!

    Ok... Here's something weird now.
I'm attempting to do the backup and it is showing my iphoto library as "Preview"
The "Preview" when selected selects as an iphoto library and contains the 20+GB of data consistent with my photos.
Why would it call it preview and not iPhoto library?

  • Iphoto lost pictures after import

I just uploaded a couple thousand pictures form my iphone into iphoto. after completion, I clicked to have the imported photos deleted from the phone. During the deletion process, iphoto froze and I had to force quit the program. Now, I cant find my pictures in iphoto, and most of the pictures were deleted from the phone before the program froze.
any Idea's on how to find/get these pictures? I appriciate any help. thanks.

If the photos are in the library but not recognized by iPhoto there are a couple of things you can try.
Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If both of these fail try this third method:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Hopefully it will pick up those "missing" photos and include them in the import.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I have lost pictures in iPhoto, but I can see them in the data folder, except they are only thumbnail size.  They will not open at regular size and are showing unreadable in the "originals" folder.  I've rebuilt and nothing is restoring these pics.

I have lost pictures in my iPhoto.  We moved my iPhoto to a external hard drive and I believe since then, I have random pics missing.  Some pics will show up in the "photos" and some show with a title and a blank picture.  When I click on "package contents" in iPhoto, I have found the "Originals" folder where all the pics are pulling from and the file is there but won't open.  However, in the DataXML folder under package contents, I can open the file but it is much smaller (supposed to be 1 MG, but showing in the data folder as 63kb).  How can I get these pics restored in the Originals folder?  I've rebuilt the library several times and I just ran the iPhoto Library Manager and it won't pull from the data file.  Help!!

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

  • I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures and it quit unexpectedly and i lost a bunch of pictures what do i do can they be recovered ? Please can someone help it took me 12 hours between scanning & transferring & dating old family slides

I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures and it quit unexpectedly and i lost a bunch of pictures what do i do can they be recovered some where on my computer?? Please can someone help it took me 12 hours just today not counting yesterday between scanning & transferring with a flash drive then dating old family slides in my iphoto. I lost alot

I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures
Do you mean importing photos? If so what were you importing from? If it is a flash drive why not just re-import from it? Where did you scan them?
As to backups - you really need to always have your backup running - without good backups you will lose all photos sooner or later

  • Lost iPhoto and pictures

Tonight opened iPhoto and was prompted to select a library. I chose the library I thought was the correct one (I only have two choices iPhoto or Pictures) and now when iPhoto opens I have all the thumbnails but when I click to open them all I get is a black screen with an "!" mark.
I have tried all the usual procedures such as opening with "Option & Cmd" buttons held and rebuilt
all #1,2, & 6, or only "option" held to choose new library all to no avail.
Furthermore, when I went back to my Pictures folder all I have is a folder which went clicked on opens iPhoto. If I right-click on this folder then I can see all my other contents. I have tried to select-all in the this folder to drag onto the Pictures folder but all I get is a pop-up saying it can't be opened because "Pictures" may be damaged or incomplete
Using a cmd line from a previous problem I was able to get my "Pictures" folder back to what it should be (after several goes during which it kept reverting back).
Can anyone offer some advice on how I can open up my photos please?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I lost all my photos in iphoto and picture project

I have a Mac OS X version 10.3.9, and the iphoto is version 4.0.3
i emptied my trash, and then went through the applications and deleted the ones i don't use (such as PDA and palm pilot applications and the games that i will never play). After i was done, i went back to iphoto and all the albums and pictures were gone. I went into picture project (a nikon software) and those pictures were gone, but had the little boxes of blank pictures. My desktop originally had a picture on it that i downloaded from a camera was gone as well. when i logged onto another account those pictures were still there. When i logged back onto my account, my desktop picture came back, leading me to believe that my pictures are still there. But those are gone too. Is there anyway i can retrive my pictures? I really hope they are not gone! I have too many pictures...and only half of them backed up! =(

i'm talking about the desktop trash. I don't know how to empty the iphoto trash.
No, i didn't delete anything with iphoto. i know i can delete duplicates, and still keep one of the pictures, i have done that before. I did delete Chess, Deimos Rising, Ambrosia Software Web, Kinoma, Palm, PDA Shop Lists, PDA Money, PDA Safe ID, Splash ID, Splash Money, Splash Shopper.
I logged under a different user name, and all those pictures were still in iphoto and picture project.
No, i did not contradict myself. The desk top picture did come back, leading me to believe that all the photos were still there. However, when i checked the iphoto and picture project, those were still gone.

  • Have thumbnails, iPhoto lost many original files!

This is the second time iPhoto has killed me, this time loosing some very valuable photos!  I am using iPhoto 9.5 on Mavericks.  I recently discovered lost pictures in an event from 6 months ago.  It has the thumbnails so it looks fine on the surface but when I click on a picture and tried to look full screen at the photo (when it loads the original) I got a black triangle exclamation point error.  This happens for all but 3 photos (out of about 200 original).  I looked at a few other events in the same time frame and found another one missing about half of it's pictures.  Haven't gone through the whole database to find out what else might be lost at this point.  I looked in timemachine but it only goes back to November when I upgraded to Mavericks.  It shows info that I have older dates but I can't access them, I guess Mavericks doesn't like Snow Leopard.
I then made a copy of my iPhoto library "just in case" so that if my next steps are disastrous I might have hope.  I tried Command-Option starting iPhoto and tried Repair permissions, repair database and rebuild database.  I didn't try rebuild thumbnails since I'm worried iPhoto will get rid of any thumbnails it can't find an original file connect to which means I'll lose even the thumbs.
    Two questions:
Where does iPhoto save thumbnails?  Any sort of order that means anything to humans?  Is this going to be even remotely easy to sort so that I can have even a low-res copy of my pictures for memories??
Do I have any other options to try to fix iPhoto?  It did this about a year ago as well (with an earlier version of iPhoto which prompted an upgrade) so I am rapidly losing faith in this program for something as important to me as photographs.
    Thanks

1 - since you have a copy of your iPhoto library you are safe
2 - rebuilding thumbnails is safe - expecially since you have a backup
3 - by your thumbnails (and by default your priginals and your previews are stored in the iPhoto library in standard finder folders - you do not access them that way but they are there
4 - download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use its rebuild to create a totally new library leaving the existing one unchanged if you need it for the future

  • IPhoto deletes pictures when shared

Not that Apple will do anything about this problem that has been going on since iPhoto got the major update, but in shared mode, we imported loads of photos of our beautiful 20 month old son and newborn daughter. And now they are permanently gone. Vanished!!! Keeps happening. And of course they were deleted from phone. So, moral of the story, is; the only way to import is in the ORIGINAL user mode (which screws up other user iPhone syncs) and then they appear in other users. If imported in secondary users, ALL PICTURES ARE LOST. Apple..... maybe fix this???
Can someone please help me if they know how to retrieve lost pictures?
    Thank you.
    <Email Edited by Host>

Note that NO one else has reported this so it is highly likely that you have a problem rather than iPhoto having a bug
Also this is not a way to reach Apple - it is strictly a user to user forum
And personal e-mails are not permitted in it per the TOU
And it is strongly recommended that you never have iPhoto or any other program delete your photos - it is far better to import the photos and then delete them yourself later (I prefer to wait for one backup cycle at least)
Any more details on your problem so someone might be able to help

  • Move photos from iPhoto to Pictures.

I want to move photos from iPhoto to Pictures. I exported about 16000 yesterday and trashed the iPhoto ones (still in Trash) but when I looked at the contents of the iPhoto library, they still appeared there.  Why is this?
If I've modified a pic, then export to Pictures, does the edited version get exported too?  If not, then is it deleted when I trash the iPhoto version?
Also, it seems that the date when the photo was taken is lost when I export ( it takes on the date of export).  Is there a way to retain it?

Original is just that: a byte by bye copy of the file you imported.
Current: Is the current version of the shot - this is as it exists in the Library. Exporting this will miss metadata.
The quality of the photo you export will depend on the export setting you choose.
You know, if you take a couple of seconds, iPhoto is much more flexible and easier to use than the Finder. The orgaisation, searching and sorting options are much richer. The problem with the Finder is simple: it organise files. But it makes no distinctions at all between kinds of files, and so offers exactly the same opportunities for organising your Photos, your Music, your Word files. It takes no account of standard metadata - like Exif date and so on.
iPhoto supports Raw on most cameras, and can be used as a "front end" to Photshop.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
One small conceptual leap and it might make things easier: That Jpeg is not your Photo. Easiest way to elaborate on this: In my iTunes Library I have an mp3 called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles'. But that mp3 is not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. The wrote a song, recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in a container. That container is adapted to the special opportunities of music, and it's an mp3 file.
Similarly, that Jpeg is just a container for your Photo.
Iphoto is about Photos. Import them, forget about the jpegs. Tiffs whatever, because they're just containers. Organise your photos - leveraging the special opportunities offered by the fact that they are photos -  and then anything you need to do with or to them can be done either with or via iPhoto.
When you export, the export dialogue simply asks you a: what you want to export (that's the kind) and everything else is about the container you want to put the Photo in.
Because, unless you export Originals, you're not exporting the file you imported, you're exporting the Photo you imported, and putting it in a new box.

  • Iphoto lost library

My Iphoto lost the connection to the library. Suddenly I can only see iclouds pictures and imagines of the other happening maps.
Can somebody support me what to do. Theire are approx 8000 picture. In the finder the iphoto library tells that their are 60 Gb, but I can´t connect to them.

Simple solution is to restore from your back up.
However, I've never heard of any error message that says your entire iPhoto Library no longer exists. Can you give us the exact wording you get?

Sorry no backup - no pictures.
Yes phone will automatically backup to icloud when on wifi and phone is charge, but your phone storage was full so it stop backing up.

I was warned and I went straight to the site and they were gone.  I didnt was any time. Either way, there should be a way to either store or restore such items. Have you ever lost pictures that were so important to you that you couldnt sleep or eat for some time. I have and it wasnt fun. I'm glad that you were able to get yours unlike some of us.

I am still wondering why iTunes tries to confuse me every time I try to make changes in my preferences, telling me that I "don't have enough permissions", although I am the administrator.
That's clearly a fault. Whether it's an iTunes problem or a Windows problem I can't say at this time. If you search the Using iTunes for Windows forum for "permissions", you should find threads that can help you sort out this problem.
Then, changes to the format are not obvious, and I get no notice that I am burning music files as data.
If you click on a playlist and look at the lower-right of the iTunes window, it says right there what format it will use to burn the playlist.

No such thing has occurred.  iPhones do not backup to one another.
It is not possible to backup a different iPhone from the one being updated.
If the iPhone was restored with a backup from a different device, restore it again from the correct backup.

Pay attention when restoring the iPhone and select the correct backup to restore from.
