IPhoto makes duplicates when editing
I'm having the problem that iPhoto is making a duplicate copy of an image each time I edit the image in iPhoto or Photoshop. This is getting confusing since I do all the preliminary adjustments in iPhoto and then do color corrections in Photoshop. I may end up with 6 or 8 duplicates by the time I finish and they are all named the same.
As you have found out there is a real bug in iPhoto 11 regarding editing with external editors, particularly Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Be sure to report your issues to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. The more reports the quicker it's likely to be corrected in the next update.

After editing with PS Elements, a duplicate is generated in Events/Photos. Is this an Adobe problem, or iPhoto problem? Also, if you delete the original are there consequences when you attempt to "Consolidate Masters" in Aperture?

Or are you talking about iPhoto '11 (version 9.x.x) - iPhoto '11 does duplicate the photos when they are sent to an external editor - report this bug to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
You can delete the original in iPhoto using iPhoto - NEVER make any changes of any kind to the iPhoto library using the finder

IPhoto '11 duplicates when editing in external editor
What the topic says. iPhoto automatically creates a duplicate, that actually shows up as a duplicate in the library, when you choose to edit a photo in an external editor (such as Photoshop). It used to just replace the original, thus showing only the edited version (though keeping the original file if you want to go back to it), which is exactly what happens if you choose to just edit in iPhoto.
Bug? Feature?Same problem. I edit in external editor (PSE) and an edited copy shows up as well as the original. I highlite the edited copy and try to revert to original and nothing happens. I send the edited copy to the trash and empty the trash, highlite the original again and choose edit in external editor and the edited version pops up again as if I had never trashed it.
Another annoying issue: I really don't want to mess around with slide shows but am forced to if I want to look at a photo in full screen view. iPhoto 09, full screen view meant, highlite a photo, full screen view, photo shows up in full screen. Simple and exactly what I want. Now full screen simply means the left column disappears and I'm looking at a full screen of thumb nails. What good is that? OK, so I'll play that game. Select slide show, window pops up the first time asking for slide show settings. Select classic instead of disolve and check that as the default. Every single event that window pops up asking me for slide show settings even though I have selected my defaults. I have something like 850 events and I got very annoyed selecting classic as my default every single time. And why do they imagine I want to listen to music? I clone mt hard drive once a week and have a copy of my drive with iPhoto 09 on it. I'm going back to 09. -

Does my iPad make duplicates when i put them in albums? They apear on filmrol(photolist?) and when i try to delete it says: "delete everywhere?"
Another aspect (probably a bigger concern) of why this has my concern, is that it says i have 7.2 GB of photo's while i only have a 1000 or so photos on it! Even a digital illiterate like me knows 7.2MB per photo isnt normal. Most of them taken on a digital camera btw..
Can someone tell me whats going on and how i can solve/prevent this problem?

Yes. using the CCK, it transfers the compressed jpeg which should be about 2.5MB plus the raw file which according to your camera link is around 5MB. So the math makes sense.

Iphoto blanks out when editing
Another proof of why I have fear of Apple updates. On iPhoto, when editing a picture with Enhance feature it just blanks out (or blacks out) after using it, not for all pictures but most. Very frustrating. Any ideas out there? Thanks F
What does that have to do with your fear of updates?
There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there? -
IPhoto creates duplicates when I click "Edit"?
I've just upgraded to iPhoto '11 and installed it on my new 15" MBP, imported my old iPhoto library, and everything seems lovely.
BUT: whenever I click "Edit in external application," iPhoto creates a duplicate of the photo, and sends the duplicate to Photoshop. When I quit photoshop, the duplicate image remains in iPhoto. This duplicate remains even if I don't make any changes in Photoshop.
Is this a new behavior? It's pretty frustrating. Any way to turn it off?Very frustrating. I make a lot of panoramas, and I need to open four or more adjacent images at once to perform Photomerge in Photoshop. So now every time I do this, I'm going to have a whole bunch of pointless duplicates cluttering up my drive? What was the thought behind this?

How to not create Lightroom duplicate when editing in Photoshop
When I choose to Edit in Photoshop from within Lightroom 3, the edited copy is added to Lightroom. This might sometimes be useful, but I want to choose whether or not the edited copy is added to lightroom.
How can I make this choice?
DavidThat's not my experience - maybe I've got some setting wrong somewhere.
I have two categories of images in Lightroom: DNG files originating from digital camera Raw files, and files which are PSD that were scanned from old photos.
Opening the DNG files in Photoshop then selecting "Save As" does not make the duplicate in Lightroom PROVIDED I have "As a copy" checked. But then the copy is not the file that's currently open so I have go find the copy and open it to do any work on it.
Opening PSD files from Lightroom in Photoshop, the duplicate is created immediately the file opens in Photoshop unless I select the "Edit original" option. But even then, if I subsequently use Save As within Photoshop, the copy appears in Lightroom.
My version of Lighrtoom is 3.4.1
My version of Photoshop is CS5.1

IPhoto 6 Problem when editing using Photoshop Elements 3.0
Please can someone help. If I edit a photo in photoshop elements 3.0 from iPhoto and then click the save button I get an option box that requires the quality and save settings. I've selected the best quality but I then have a choice of saving in base standard, base optimised or progressive. If I choose any of these options, when I go back into iPhoto the skin tones etc. have changed (they have a more reddish look about them)on that picture. Please can someone advise me how to save without it altering the colour of my photos. Editing in iPhoto doesn't effect the colour at all.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's not that setting (I use Base Standard) but the fact that PE3 may be adding a color profile to the file that is different to what was there originally. Go to the Photoshop Elements menu and select Color Settings... option. There you can set it to have "No color management". (I'm running PE2 so the menu selections may be different than PE3). Then see if that will make a difference.

IPhoto is destructive when editing photos
Hi,
I recently discovered that when you use the editing tools with iPhoto and export / share them, they are destructively shrinked to 3MP (2048x1536).
I don't see this documented anywhere. It's a HUGE problem not telling the users that all the pictures are destroyed.
I just tested with a full size picture from iPhone 4S 8MP.
1. Take picture on iPhone 4S
2. Sync between devices via photostream @ full resolution on the PC and "optimized size" on the iPad.
3. Open and Edit on the iPad
4. Save and Share
Boom, now the picture is 3MP instead of 8MP in the photostream.
I would expect iPhoto to get the full resolution photo and edit it, instead of shrinking it.
I can understand that the pictures showed on the iPad are optimized for performance reason, but not that the iPhoto App save the optimized one instead of the full resolution one just like Apps like Camera+ and I think all other serious Apps.
This is totally wrong. I know discovered that I lost original pictures because of this *undocumented & not user friendly* behavior by deleting "duplicate" (original) pictures...
Not the first time that I can't trust Apple stuff. Last time, iCloud syncing with Keynote on iOS destroyed all my presentations but the opened one. I lost everything...But the problem rely in the photo stream. Because when you save the modifier picture in the camera roll, it's still shrinked. Even with photoforge2, you can't get the full resolution version from the photostream.

So you can't get full resolution using Photo Stream to send photos to an IOS device, but from an IOS device to a computer the resolution stays the same.
It is editing in iPhoto that creates smaller versions, but the originals are not destroyed. You can send your originals back - full resolution - by sharing them to iTunes. -
Help with iPhoto 11 crashing when editing.
Hi, new to this here and also new to MAC. I have an early 2011 Mac and recently when using Iphoto 11 and trying to edit a couple photos it would crash on me. Didn't matter what photo editing cycle I did (cropping, B&W, etc). I then followed the instructions I have seen in the forums and it didn't change - problem not resolved.
I finally uninstalled Iphoto 11 and reinstalled it and when trying to import my library again it crashed on me. It did this several times. I then recovered my trashed Iphoto library and the app didn't crash on opening but still have same problem on it crashing when doing editing.
Could someone please help me on this. As I said I have looked through the forums and done the suggestions on deleting the preference files, cache files, Option+ Cmd. And even on rebuilding it crashes on me.

Iphoto makes sound when opened and is really slow
after opening iphoto and choosing a picture, my computer starts humming like there is a old swinging door left open nearby. Also it slows down my whole computer. I did not have this problem with my previous powerbook G4 where I had same pictures.

IPhoto 9.1.5 on my imac and MBP has gone really slow when editing etc.
I have noticed that on both my machines iPhoto hangs continuosuly when edits are made to the picture such as denoise etc. It hangs when moving to the next picutre and sometimes I have to Force Quit. I have reinstalled iPhoto, repaired the photo library, tried logging into my mac on a different account, repaired disk permissions etc. The fault still occurs. I am using Leopard and hardly use my MBP apart from installing the regular software updates which I believe might be to blame.
The database is corrupted.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Does Aperture make copies when you edit--like iPhoto?
Sorry to take up time with such a simple question.
But, my wife is the family photo editor--and she hates iPhoto's non-intuitive way of making duplicates whenever she edits a photo. Inevitably, whenever she tries to get back to the edited version of the photo, she can't find it--or finds the "wrong" one and ends up sending it to the grandparents, etc...
My question is this: Does Aperture have the ability to simply save the edited photo and permanently trash the original? If so, is the program set up that way as a default setting? Apart from the confusion that iPhoto causes, it really starts to take up valuable drive space with several versions of the same photo...

unless you tell it to make a new version when editing - but that is not a full copy, just an instruction to make a second version ...
aperture uses versions to make changes and holds the instructions in small little files ...
i can make 80 different versions of one master file and never equal double the size of the original (ok 80 may be overstating but you get my point) ...
it uses non-destructive editing, your original is never touched ... if you need a copy of a version, simply export it out ... you will never trash the original, unless you export a version, delete the master and then reimpor the version as a master ...

oh, the only time it will create a new physical file is if you decide to open the master in say photoshop, then it will create (based on your prefs) a new tiff or psd and add that to your library ... -
Iphoto 11 - Duplicates and confusing suffixes on External Edit
Just a warning. Iphoto 11 has some changes that make it difficult to use an external editor.
I use iphoto in my photo processing process to edit photo's externally with photoshop CS4. I like iphoto for cropping because it has standard frame sizes and I like its view on the database. I also like iphoto as easy to understand. I also use(d) iphoto because it is easy edit on my mac laptop and then finally import the new iphoto library into aperture when done.
Iphoto 11 now creates a duplicate file so you will have the original raw and duplicate when you are done, in your iphoto library. It is very confusing because they have the same names and you grab one thinking its the other.
In addition, I am getting all kinds of errors in transferring files from iphoto to CS4. I think what is happening is that iphoto is saving in tiff but putting a jpg suffix on it and CS4 is seeing it as a corrupt jpeg and won't open.
Anyway, until apple/adobe coordinate on this, iphoto is not longer easy to use with an external editor.
You might want to stay in iphoto 9 until they get the bugs out or consider moving to lightroom or aperture if you are a heavy photoshop user.
If I am wrong, I would appreciated feedback. I have struggled with it for 1/2 a day and given up for now.
ScottYEs - this is very frustrating. I was trying to use CaptureDX2 to edit the Raws - using it as an external editor. But when you open up the external program, iPhoto quickly creates a duplicate image in your library - a view of the browser shows that this thumbnail image in the library points to the original file, in this case the RAW file I was trying to edit. ARGHH. This, obviously, makes a mess of the library (with duplicate thumbnails every time you'd open the file to edit in the external editor. Does anyone have any ideas regarding this?

When i put in a compact flash card iphoto automaticaly comes up to import my photos. I have to exit out of iphoto to use the editing softwear that i prefer to use every time. It is very annoying. How do i prevent this from happening? I have looked in system prefereces....maybe i am over looking something, Thanks
iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General -> Connecting Camera opens.... And select your preferred app.
You can also make the same choice in the Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) and Aperture preferences.
