Iphoto manual sort is grayed out?

View / Sort Photos / Manually.. is grayed out in iPhoto, but I'd like to manually order the way the event groups are display in the "Photos" view... Is it possible?

I'm looking at the folders in the photo view...
No, in iPhoto world, you're looking at the photos with the Event titles showing, that's all.

In IPhoto (Events), my "manually sort" is grayed out. I am unable to rearrange my photos. Any suggestions??

    Hello Terence,
Okay I will try reformating the camera's card. However all is well when I export photos to my iMac at home or onto my iPad.
If your suggestion does not work should I try reinstalling iPhoto from the iLife disk? If so, how do I go about doing that or is there a website somewhere explaining this?

  • IPhoto manual sort, not in events or albums.

I'm running Mavericks on MBP, I would like to manually sort my photos in iPhoto in order uploaded. Not in events, in photo view where you can see all your photos. I do not want to organize an album. I cannot drag and drop photos in order. Manual sort is grayed out, I cannot change this. Past answers to this question suggest if start manually moving things then the option will become available. I cannot manually move anything, it just won't respond. Help please.

You can't do what you want. The Library (whether in Events or Photos view) cannot be sorted manually. If you want to use manual sorting you must use Albums.

  • How do I sort photos the way I want them to appear within an Event? Sort Manually is always grayed out. SAR

Keep trying but sort manually stays grayed out. All I want to do is sort photos within one event the way I want them to appear.

    It's like iTunes:
You can view an music album on iTunes and there are all the tracks. The hit single, the annoying filler that they stuck on, all there.
Or you can create a Playlist of just the singles, or tracks from various albums that work together well, or just your favourite tracks from different artists and so on.
In iPhoto: the Event has all the photos taken at that time. So, all 812 photos you took at the Wedding. All there.
An Album allows you to just use the 50 best ones, and possibly group them with 12 from the Rehearsal and five others from the day after. Just the best shots. Or bunch all the photos of the groom from birth to today, or all the photos of the bride and her dog. Or whatever. Really, the limit is your imagination.
Like Playlists in iTunes, images in an iPhoto album are simply referenced from the Library. So a photo can be in any number of albums and use no extra disk space.
Then, once you couple your imagination with metadata...
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How can I  move pictures if the manual sort is greyed out?

I have several pictures in a folder in I photo. They werfe taken by 2 different cameras. I want to move one picture next to another but the sort is by date and the manual selection is greyed out
    Bob Dreyer

1 - in iPhoto folders do not hold photos - they hold other folders or albums - are you speaking of events by any chance?
2 - you can isolate the photos taken by a camera by making a smart album for that camera
3 - if you are speaking of events then the two cameras time/date settings were incorrect - you can adjust that by selecting the photos in the smart album for that camera and using the adjust time/date command - once the time/date is correct the photos will sort next to each other
alternatively you can put photos in an album and in an album you can manually sort them

  • I have Windows 8.1 on my PC. Ever since downloading the latest version of i Tunes 11.1.4 it will not recognize any of my i Pods (3). Never had any problems syncing until this latest version of i Tunes.Manual sync is "grayed out", any ideas ? Thanks

I have Windows 8.1 on my PC. Ever since downloading the latest version of i Tunes, it will not recognize any of my i Pods (3) and therefore am unable to sync any music from my i Tunes to the i Pods. I've tried all the obvious things like resarting the PC as well as the i Pods tried different patch cables but the i Tunes software will no longer recognize my i Pods. I have automatic sync selected, but I even tried to manually sync by clicking on devices under File but the sync icon is "grayed" out. When I look under Preferences and click on devices the serial numbers of my i Pods appear and are correct but again will not recognize the i Pod when plugged in to the PC. Bottom line I'm dead in the water....appreciate any suggestions....thanks

  • IPhoto events showing a grayed out palm tree

Using iPhoto 9.4.3 on a MacBook Pro under ML version 10.8.4.
My wife created several events and the result were  placeholder photos of a grayed out palm tree and the photo count was 0. However, when I clicked on the event it opened and several pictures were present. This happened to several events that she created.
Question: how do I remove the grayed out palm tree and replace it with a proper key photo?
    Thanks

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Ipod set to manual, video options grayed out, no copying

First, I was experimenting, which is why I am having the following issue. My ipod 30gig Video was formatted on Windows XP when purchased. I decided I wanted the new update, but to do that I had to get rid of everything and use the iPod CD to convert the iPod to a Mac format. I used PodUtil and copied every song and video purchased from Mac and stored them on my computer hard drive. The format to mac was flawless, even re-importing all the songs and videos into my iTunes library. I copied all the songs back into my iPod, no problems. Problem now...none of the Clone Wars, Avatar or other videos will copy to my iPod. I can highlight all of them , drag them to the ipod and get the green plus sign, but no copying occurs. Under iPod>options>videos, everything is grayed out. I can't choose anything. Under iPod>options>Music, it is set to manage playlists and music manually. So, how can I get my legally purchased Mac videos into my iPod now? Videos I have edited in Final Cut Pro and exported in the iPod format copy over flawlessly. For a tedious solution, I could import all the videos bought from apple into final cut pro and re-export them as iPod formats and then import the newly converted versions back into my iPod, but there is no garauntee that will work. Any ideas ?

Hold down the ⌥ and ⌘ keys while connecting your iPod. Keep them down until iTunes has opened and your iPod shows in the Source list.

  • Iphoto manual sort

I am unable to manually sort my photos within an event. The options to Sort Photos > Reset Manual Sort or select Sort Photos > Manually are gray.

    Longer explanation:
Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

  • The layout options in the newest version of iPhoto the menu are grayed out.

Can anyone tell me how the layout options work in the new iPhoto version.

Layout options for what?  Which iPhoto are you referring to?  iPhoto 2 for iOS or iPhoto 9.5 on the Mac?

  • Restoring manual sort in iphoto

Manual sort and restore manual sort are grayed out on my dropdown menu. How do I restore these functions?

There are times when these options are not available, including Smart Albums, folders containing Smart Albums, and Last Roll. Also, look at the little calendar icon at the bottom of the iPhoto window. If there is a tiny blue dot on the calendar then it is active, meaning you already are in a chronological search and Manual Sort is not an option. To exit, click on the calendar to make it pop up and click on the x to turn it off.
If you are not in any of these situations, then go to Users/(your account name)/Library/Preferences and delete the preference file com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Sometimes this file gets corrupted and you can be stuck. After deleting it you will want to reset your Preferences in iPhoto if you're not using the default settings.

  • IPhoto '11 -- manual sort of event photos is not available

    Hi,
When viewing an Event, for some reason, I am unable to drag and drop to sort the photos. View > Sort Photos shows Manually and Reset Manual Sort are grayed out.
I am able to do a manual sort of the Events themselves in the Events window, but when I open an Event and view the photos in that Event, I can't reorder them. I am reading the Help file, and I can't see why this isn't working.
Doing a manual sort in an Album works by dragging and dropping.
    Thanks for any help.
    John

That's correct. The manual sort applies only to the Events themselves, not their photos. Within an Event photos can be sorted by Date, Keyword, Title or Rating. Not manually. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
If you want to sort the contents of an Event manually drag the Event into the Album section of the left hand pane to create an Album of that event. Then you can use a manual sort.

  • Custom sort grayed out

Custom sort is grayed out on my Lightroom 5 menu. How do I change that so I can rearrange the images?

Something else I've noticed, my users are having intermittent problems with deleting recurring appointments: sometimes they'll try to delete single instances and they won't be deleted.

iPhoto:  How can I sort photos within an event.  I can't figure out how to activate the Manual Sort button.

Only albums can be sorted manually. Events can only be sorted automatically according to one of the predefined settings "Date, Keywords, Title, Rating".
If you need a manual sort order, selectaall photos in the event and create an album: File > New Album
