IPhoto messes up the screen completely

Alright, so I've got the weirdest problem with iPhoto. I'm on an 2007 iMac, running the latest version of everything (iPhoto Version 9.6, OS X ). I usually use my 2011 MacBook for picture editing cause it's faster, but I wanted to view some photos on the bigger (20 inch) screen. I started it up, only running iTunes in the background, deleted some old photos first, and when I tried to right-click my photostream to import it into my library, the screen suddenly started to mess completely up. Bars, black squares, static everywhere. Mouse kept being displayed normally, but moving windows or triggering the dock did not do much, despite bringing more messed-up-ness onto my screen. Only solution to it was rebooting (or logging out, which was not that easy given I couldn't read anything from the pop-up that comes up after clicking the apple-logo at the top left corner of the screen, and logging back in), closing iPhoto did not help a bit.
I narrowed it down to this:
- It happens after several minutes without doing anything, just by having iPhoto up (and nothing else, having something else open does not change anything).
- It happens immediately when iTunes is running and right-clicking something in iPhoto.
- It happens faster when actively doing something with iPhoto even without iTunes running.
Does anyone have ANY idea what this could be? The OS is a fresh install on a wiped hard drive, so it can't be an old installation of anything messing this up somehow. Problem does, of course, not occur on my MacBook Pro, and I could not find anything online about this.
HALP
Edit: Oh, and screenshots taken while the messed-up-ness happens are completely empty (transparent).

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk and disk permissions. Reboot and try again. It's a long shot but worth a try.
You might try running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it can detect any issues with the hard drive or video card.  Run it several times in a row. OS X Yosemite: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test
Any other apps trigger it?  Like iMovie or Quicktime Player?  That might help point you to the graphics card.

  • When i double click a photo in iphoto to edit, the screen goes black

when i double click a photo in iphoto to edit, the screen goes black.  I'm using 10.7.5 with iPhoto 9.4.2.  Can anyone help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Since we know nothing about the age of your machine, and the OS you're using it's rather difficult to offer any reliable help.
Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is (which MacBook Air you have, which OS you're using, ) the more useful assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it..
This might be a reoccurring phenomena of Mavericks - a sleep/wake issue has caused many similar behaviors. It might be a conflicting software issue, or a true hardware problem with your particular machine. More details from you can shed more light.

  • I have an external display, but the screen ratio is messed up in games.

    I've got:
    - A new MacBook Pro 15" with Lion (a month old maybe), it's the 2.2 GHz one (with 8 GB RAM)
    - A Samsung Syncmaster BX2235 screen, working at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels
    - A VGA connector to plug the Syncmaster in to the laptop.
    My problem:
When I normally use my laptop with my external display in Lion it supports 1920x1080 without a problem (see photo 1), when I watch a movie in full screen too, but as soon as I start up a game (any game: WoW, TF2, Worms, etc) in full screen and I set the resolution to 1920x1080 it'll mess up the screen (see photo 2). I'm not sure if you see it at first glimpse but there are black bars at both the left and the right side of the screen, the left one is bigger than the right one.
Anyway in WoW there is a function that you can run the game in Windowed but still Full Screen. When I do that I can access the top OSX bar (the one with the clock), and click on the display icon. It now shows there are 2 versions of 1920x1080 @ 60Hz (see photo 3). If I click the one that isn't checked, it'll fix the screen and I can view the game on this display exactly the way I want it.
I had an older MacBook Pro (from 2009, 15", 2.8GHz Dual Core) running Snow Leopard, I played some of the same games on that and I NEVER had problems with this screen. I gave it to my sis so I tested it again and there are still no problems.
Now naturally my question is: what is the problem and how can I fix it?

  • Help me urgently please, impossible to open my Mac book air, sometimes he refuse my login, sometimes he goes further but the screen is never uploaded completely, he goes off before, and he take hours for all that, till than he have been perfect...

I'm having problems to open my Mac, sometimes he refuse my login several times, when I insist he start, very slowly but he never gets to the final, he doesn't upload the screen completely, can you help me? thank you

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) • My iPod Touch 4G's screen has gone white and has lines on the screen. How do I fix it? Help!

    Hello everyone,
I've had an iPod Touch 4th generation for a few years now, and, today, for the first time, the screen has gone white and their are vertical lines on it. What happened was I accidentally dropped my iPod Touch on tile and it landed on its back. I tried it out right afterwards to see if it was still working and it seemed like it was perfectly fine. Later on, I got an email from one of my friends, so I slid the email button on the lock screen to see the email. In the email, there was a link to a gif image, so I opened it in Safari. After I was done with it, I closed that tab. I also had a second tab open from earlier, so I wanted to close that tab as well. When I clicked on the button to see all tabs and close one, the screen completely froze. I held on to the on/off button on the top of the iPod, and, after about a minute, the screen switched to a completely white screen with lines on it. I've tried holding onto the on/off button again and it doesn't work. I also tried plugging it into my Windows 7 computer and opening iTunes, but my computer doesn't even recognized it is plugged in. It won't appear under the "computer" section in Windows Explorer, which will allow me to do USB-related tasks with it. iTunes doesn't recognize that it is plugged in either, so I can't do anything like restore the iPod to factory settings. The home button on my iPod hasn't been working for a while so i've always been using the accessibility feature that gives me a home button on the screen. Now that I can't access that, I can't hold down both the on/off button and the home button at the same time. What should I do? Should I send it in to Apple for repairs (which I won't do and would rather buy a new iPod Touch)? I am thinking of just leaving it to, hopefully, have the battery drain and the iPod would die. Then, I could charge it and see what happens. Other than that, i'm just clueless right now and I have no idea what I should do. Please help me!
My iPod Touch is an iPod Touch 4th generation model with 8GB. It is running iOS 5.1.1.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Is there any way to change the screen resolution in Front Row?

    Hi all,
I've got a Mac Mini plugged in to my TV, and I want to be able to change the screen resolution depending on the content I'm watching (as some content is in 4:3 aspect ratio, some is in 16:9, and I'd prefer to have the picture filling the screen completely). Unfortunately, the TV doesn't have a "stretch" mode for making an 4:3 picture fit a 16:9 aspect ratio. If I know what I want to watch in advance, I can set the resolution accordingly using system prefs on the mac, but if I'm just sitting back choosing what to watch with the Apple Remote, it's annoying to have to leave front row, walk over to the computer and change resolution once I've decided what to watch, open system prefs, change resolution, re-launch Front Row and find what I wanted to watch again.
So I was wondering if anyone had figured a way to allow the screen resolution to be switched from within the FrontRow UI. I've seen that people have written python based plug-ins such as PyeTV and Understudy that allow different types of content to be added to FrontRow, but I've not found any utility plug-ins such as what I'm looking for on the net (nor could I find SDK documentation on this API in the stuff that comes with XCode).
I guess the other approach might be quick keys: has anyone had any success hooking up quick keys macros alongside front row in response to apple remote events? (seems too few events to be able to choose from, but I've never tried it, so I won't assume!) Or how about is there a way to trigger an AppleScript from within Front Row? And, of course, I'm very open to any other ideas you might have!
Thanks very much in advance for any ideas on this.

  • My iMac 20 inch 2.4 has developed a very annoying flicker. It looks like somebody is messing with the brightness but than really quick. Any ideas on how to solve this problem ?

My almost four year old iMac 20 inch 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo has recently been giving me a headache. The screen is flickering a lot. It looks like somebody is messing with the screen brightness at a really fast rate. I have no idea what it could be but have tried to recalibrate the screen, stopped certain dashboard apps, even changed the desktop picture and screensaver. Has anybody else had the same problem or could somebody help me in getting rid of this flicker. It feels like it is a software issue as it happens intermittently rather than continuous.
    Pleas help me !

  • If I stay on iPhoto too long, my screen goes black.

    Hi all,
Recently, I was editing a photo in iPhoto when suddenly the screen went black.  The computer hadn't switched off because the backlight keyboard was still lit.
After many restarts, I finally realised that if I were to open iPhoto and leave the appellation open for about 20 seconds, the screen would go black again.  Eventually iPhoto said that my library could not be found and I had to go through the process of rebuilding my library.  I now have all of my photos again, but the problem persists.  If I open iPhoto and use it for about 20 seconds, the screen goes black.
Does anyone have any suggestions for this strange problem?
    Thank you.

Log into another user account on your Mac and see if the problem persists there when you open iPhoto for a while.
If the problem doesn't repeat itself there then try the following in your account:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

Did anything happen to prior to your phone acting this way? It sounds like your screen is dead, but it is hard to say without knowing what what the cause.
    1) was this a gradual problem? Did the phone screen start dimming a couple months ago and now has degraded or after some event (known or unknown to you), the phone started behaving this way.
    2) Can you give more specifics on the problem? You said you have a black screen, but also you can see what you're doing on screen. Is the screen just really dim? Is the screen completely black? Does anything else besides attempting to reset the device cause it to flash white?
