IPhoto migration from iPhoto 6 to 9 problem

I am upgrading from an old iMac running Tiger to a new Mac currently running Maverick.  I went to transfer over a large photo collection in iPhoto.  My previous version of iPhoto was 6.0.6.  The new version is 9.5.1.  Since my old mac was too old for Migration Assistant, I attempted to transfer all my photos (via the iPhoto library) via an external hard drive.  I copied the library to the iPhoto and as expected the library needed to be updated with iPhoto Library Upgrader.  However, about 90 percent of the way through the upgrade, I received messages that "The volume for <file name> cannot be found.  I was given three options: cancel (results in cycling through missing files names--about 100 and then back through again, but never out); Find Photo (goes to Finder window) or Try again which simply comes back to the same screen).  While in this stage, I can't access any of the iPhoto controls, including Preferences.  From what I've read here, I suspect this are certain images which are referenced and separate from iPhoto library which are not linked, but at this point, I haven't seen a single photo from the transfer and am not sure what to do next.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Chris

From what I've read here, I suspect this are certain images which are referenced and separate from iPhoto library which are not linked
That's it exactly.
There really is no good way forward now. If you still have the other machine I would rebuild the v6 library there - get it working first. Then copy the repaired version over.

    Arjun,
you cannot do an online migration with MS Access as you can do with other foreign datasources. You can only do an offline migration.
The first step that you need to do is to call the Microsoft Access Exporter. Click on Tools - Migration - Microsoft Access Exporter and chose the exporter of the MS Access version that you are using.
The exporter creates an xml file for you. After the exporter has finished you can do the migration, click on Tools - Migration - Migrate, but in Step 4 please select "Offline", and then you can select the xml file that the exporter has created. The following steps in the Migration assistant are then doing the migration for you.
You might also want to read the chapter "Before Migrating From Microsoft Access" in the online help of SQL Developer.

  • How do I continue a migration from iPhoto to Photos that was interrupted part way through?

I began a VERY large migration (40k+ photos) from iPhoto (v9.6.1) to Photos on an external hard drive.  I have a MacBook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.3 that is connected to a network that has a Synology network drive.  The iPhoto library is on that drive and I was wanting to create the Photos library also on the drive.
The process was very slow and has taken days, but that is expected and it was definitely making progress (I could see the files being added over time). Unfortunately, the transfer was interrupted part way through (my kid closed my laptop, which disconnected it from the network). I tried to start it over with the partially created Photos library folder as the destination, hoping that it would pick up where it left off.  It worked until it reached the same files that were previously created. The migration stopped at that point, and the following error appeared: "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. There were file system or hardware issues…”  I assume the inability to overwrite previous files with the same names was the case of the "file system or hardware issues."
Is there any way to either continue the migration from where I left off, or maybe even manually move the rest of the files over? Or do I have to wipe out the entire partially migrated Photos library and start over?

You probably will have to start over
And I suspect that you are incorrect - as far as I know NO NAS is formatted Mac OS extended - A NAS is basically a Linux computer with no display or keyboard that uses a Linux format drive - a headless computer
Unless you have a directly connected drive correctly formatted you are cgoing to continue to have issues - your photos and your choice what risk you put them at but you are treading in very dangerous water with you set up - is it documented not to work and similar set ups have been reported here hundreds of times as causing major problems and losing lots of stuff

  • Missing photos after migration from iPhoto to Photos

Last week I upgraded my desktop MacPro from OS 10.9.latest to OS 10.10.3. When I first opened Photos, it did the migration from iPhotos without apparent problem. But I have noticed that many (hundreds at least) of the photos from my pre-migration iPhoto library are now not in Photos. I mounted my pre-upgrade backup drive on a laptop running OS 10.9.latest, and can find specific missing photos OK on the backup. But if I search the main drive on my desktop Mac, for example for "P1440608", I get no results. I have tried rebuilding the Photos library with no change - the missing photos are still missing.
One option is to erase my MacPro main drive and restore from the backup drive to OS 10.9.latest. This should put me back to where I was. Is there a viable alternative? Please note that my iPhoto version was 8.1.2. It will not open in OS 10.10.3, and the App Store will not let me upgrade to the most recent version. I do have Time Machine plus external bootable (SuperDuper) backup of the desktop MacPro, plus that laptop running OS 10.9.latest as resources available.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Migration from Apple iPhoto to Adobe Lightroom

    Dear all
    I have a MacBookPro and I run Apple OS X 10.6.3
I have many pictures already in my iPhoto but I bought DxO and found out that Apple's Aperture3 does not accept the RAW-DNG format. Instead of Aperture3 I would like now to buy Lightroom2, but I am apprehensive about problems in the migration.
Do you know of any glitches? Can you give me any advice?
How does Lightroom2 compare with Aperture3 apart from the price much more favourable to the latter?
Many thanks for any help from Apple users
    Mõmmibeebi

    No problem:
    1. File -> Import Photos.
    2. Select source folder and check "include subfolders".
    3. Choose 'Add' instead of copy or move.
    4. Optional: Twiddle with the stuff in the right-hand panel of the import dialog box.
    5. Click the 'Import' button.
You can always use iPhoto to compare your edits against Lightroom, so there's hardly any reason to roll them up into tifs, but that's another option if you want to be able to do a before-Lr/after-Lr compare from within Lightroom. In which case consider auto-stacking based on zero-tolerance capture time - which will stack the iPhoto(tif) versions with the new Lr versions. I don't know if there's an auto-stack based on filename/extension, but if there is that may be even better. You may not even want them stacked - this is maybe getting a little too far ahead.....

  • Iphoto wont start after migration from snow leopard to mountain lion

Hello everyone hope you can help me, I've migrate from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and my IPhoto (8.1.2) won't start, I cant reinstall from app store because it came with the copy of Snow Leopard already instaled on my Imac...And I cant find the original Disc, so anyone can help ? felling desperate...

You should be able to Software Update and that will bring your iPhoto up to date.
iPhoto was 9.2.3 at 10.6.8, so I don't know why yours was stuck at 8.1.2
However you can stick the #2 10.6 disk into your machine and should be able to run the bundled app installer.
If that doesn't work there is Pacifist from CharlesSoft that you can extract iPhoto and replace your corrupted one, then run Software Update to bring it current.
Once you have replaced iPhoto, rebuild the database

  • Migrated from old Mac to new Mac with Lion, iPhoto 6 still here, can't update

Hi, I just migrated from an old MacBook to a brand new MacBook Pro. The Apple Store did the migration for me. For some strange reason, iPhoto 6 is present on this Mac, even though it should have come with iPhoto '11. I understand that I should be able to install iPhoto '11 from the App Store, since this Mac is entitled to it, but it only shows up as a $15 purcahse instead.
Does anyone know how to get the App Store to recognise that this Mac shipped with, and is entitled to, iPhoto '1?

First, get rid of any old copy of iPhoto you have on the new computer. Log into the App Store using your Apple ID. Click on Purchases icon. At the top you should find the three iLife apps with an Accept button to click on. Then you can download iPhoto without having to pay for it.

Some additional efforts you can try:
Go to the System/Sharing preference pane and make sure Remote Apple Events is checked.
If it is, uncheck it and then recheck and try ordering again.

  • Migrating from Windows Photoshop Elements to iPhoto '08

I recently got a Mac and I'm looking into migrating from Windows Photoshop Elements 6.0 to iPhoto 7 ('08).
I've seached this forum, but I didn't find any detailed tips, tricks and recommendations on how to do the migration. I know about the PE (Photoshop Elements) command to write keyword information into the files (something like File->write tags to file). Someone (IIRC Barbara B.) also mentioned something about scripts to make the transition smoother, although I haven't seen any detailed information on what and where these scripts are. Basically, I'd like to hear from users who have migrated from Windows Photoshop Elements. I have thousands of pictures and prior planning can save me lots of time.
    Some questions:
    1. Photoshop Elements has a tagging feature, which is similar to iPhoto's keyword feature. Not sure how iPhoto will process the keywords. Do I just import the pictures into iPhoto and iPhoto will recognize the keywords? Should I create the keywords in iPhoto ahead of time prior to import (using names that exactly match Photoshop tag names) ?
    2. In PE, I've assigned captions to pictures. Can iPhoto read the captions and treat them as titles or descriptions?
    3. In PE, I've assigned ratings to pictures. Can iPhoto read them, or do I need to manually redo the ratings in iPhoto?
    4. One PE feature that I will really miss is hierarchical tags (e.g. Family->Kid's name). (Aside: everyone, please put in a request to Apple to support this feature!!) While I would prefer a native iPhoto feature to support hierarchical tags, I saw that there are 3rd party plugins available. What's the best one in terms of features and long term support/viability? Is it Keyword Manager?
    5. Any easy way to translate my PE Album definitions when migrating to iPhoto? I assume I would need to recreate them from scratch based on keywords and optionally ratings?
    6. I'm afraid to ask this next question (and I'm sure this is worthy of many separate threads). I'm still grappling with the concept of Events. In my mind, an event is something "monumental", and I've used Albums in PE for these "monumenal" events. A large percentage of my pictures don't really fit into a "monumental event" categary. Instead, they are pictures that were taken in a random/candid manner. Or, I might have pictures that are truly events, but maybe only 1 or 2 pictures would fit into an event. If I started using iPhoto from the very beginning, it may be easier to deal with the concept of events. However, I already have thousands of pictures. I'm wary of importing all my pictures in one shot (rather than on a per "event" basis), since it may result in hundreds of events, which, IMO, wouldn't provide much organizational value. Anyone have any tips/philosophical opinions on how to deal with events when thousands of pictures need to be imported? Someone (T.D.?) mentioned they organize by year for older pictures. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Can't answer all your questions, but I'll have a go at a couple.
If you write the tags to the file then iPhoto will recognise them as part of the IPTC data. There is no way to create tags in advance.
    2. In PE, I've assigned captions to pictures. Can iPhoto read the captions and treat them as titles or descriptions?
Can Elements write these to the IPTC data? If so, iPhoto should read them. A little trial will confirm.
    3. In PE, I've assigned ratings to pictures. Can iPhoto read them, or do I need to manually redo the ratings in iPhoto?
No, the IPTC data does not recognise ratings.
Keyword Manager is the way to do this.
    5. Any easy way to translate my PE Album definitions when migrating to iPhoto? I assume I would need to recreate them from scratch based on keywords and optionally ratings?
What do you mean by "album definitions"?
    About Events:
Don't get hung up on a word. They could have as easily called them 'trousers' and it would make almost as much sense
An 'Event' is an import that is automatically divided into folders depending on the criteria you set in the iPhoto Preferences.
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
So, really an Event is a Folder.
For my money, Events are a very limited way of organising photos. They are strictly date and time based. As time goes by I consolidate them - Spring 06, Summer 07, America 08 (I do this as we have three cameras feeding the Library).
I organise using Albums, Smart Albums and Keywords.
Albums (Smart or otherwise) are virtual entities. Unlike Events, they reference files on the HD, so a pic can be in 1,10 or 100 Albums with no extra disk space used. (To have a pic in two events requires two copies of the files.) They are infinitely flexible and offer a much richer set of possibilities.
How have you your photos organised currently? In folders? On what basis? If you can explain how that works we may be able to help you recreate this system in iPhoto.

  • Migration from iPhoto '08 to Photos

    Hi,
    2 main questions:
migration from iPoto '08 to Photos
    preservation of printed media
    Information:
Hardware: MacBook Pro (Fall 2008, Early 2009) 15-inch with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor a and 2GB memory
OS: Mac OSX Leopard (v 10.5.8)
Currently I am still using my outdated MacBook Pro with Leopard running on it. Since I have troubles with ordering Printed Apple Photobooks out of iPhoto. It is not supported anylonger. And since I have no new updates and new software, I decided to upgrade. Both hardware and sotware.
I decided to upgrade to the latest OS (Yosemite) which should be supported by Apple.
So I ordered a new SSD to replace the hard disk and 8GB to replace my memory. With these new pieces it should run Yosemite easily.
I also orderded a license and DVD for Snow Leopard.  I will install Snow Leopard on my SSD, to have a clean install. Then I will update to the latest possible version of Snow Leopard via Software Update. Afterwards I will upgrade to Yosemite via the Mac Store.
So I know how to handle the OS upgrade. But what about my iPhoto migration...
This is quite some old version: iPhoto '08 (v7.x). Offcourse I will backup my complete iPhoto Libarary before doing anything.
But should I only import my '08 Library when I have Yosemite running (I believe iPhoto '11 is included)? And then
Or will this not work? Do I need to import my '08 Library with an extra first step: import it in iPhoto when I have Snow Leopard running, then in iPhoto in Yosemite, and then in Photos in Yosemite?
And what about my Printed Photobooks I already created. Will they still be present in Photos? I spend a lot (and I mean a lot) of time creating some photobooks in iPhoto '08. I do not want to loose them in Photos. I want to order them at Apple, but iPhoto '08 won't let me. I can not find a minimum version of iPhoto required by Apple to order printed products. Perhaps I can still order with iPhoto '11?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sander Fiers

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto

Does anyone know how to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto, or do I have to set up another set of albums?

Albums that you synced from a computer can't be amended in the Photos app, the only way to add (or remove) photos to those albums is to do it on your Mac and resync.

  • Migrating from iPhoto 08 (v7.1.5) to iPhoto 11 (v9.3)

    Greetings iPhoto gurus,
I currently run iPhoto 08 (v7.1.5) and I have an extensive library of pictures, albums and slideshows. I'm considering upgrading to iPhoto 11, but will only do so if it will retain and migrate all my current stuff. In the process of upgrading, will the resulting iPhoto 11 library contain all the slideshows, albums and metadata (particularly the Description field which I have made extensive use of and do not fancy retyping for several hundred piccies) be migrated?
I also have the latest version of Aperture (v3.3) which I have only just started to use. What prompted this query is that I now see that Aperture v3.3. and iPhoto 11 v9.3 can share the same libraries without exporting/importing, which is obviously appealling to me.
My ultimate nirvana is being able to merge the migrated iPhoto 11 library with my current Aperture library so that I can have one database with all my legacy pictures, slideshows and metadata alongside the new stuff that I have been populating since procuring Aperture.
    Can anyone advise on:
    1) Will migrating from iPhoto 08 to iPhoto 11, as described above, work?
    2) Will I be able to merge the resulting iPhoto 11 library with the Aperture 3.3 library?
    Many thanks in anticipation.
    Simon.

Thanks - time machine already up and running. I will also duplicate library and copy that to external drive.
I tested the process of migration on my Macbook (where I have just a few test pictures - my main library is on my iMac). It all seemed to migrate fine. I then merged library with Aperture and everything seemed to transfer across - including Descriptions nicely migrating to Caption metadata. Quite impressed.
I am able to switch between iPhoto and Aperture library with ease in both applications. Nice!
Will try it for real later in the week and report back success or issues for the benefit of any other user who is contemplating the same thing.
    Cheers all,
    Simon.
