Iphoto - missing pics

lost access to my pics in iPhoto '08.  finder syas they are in there but they dont show up in iphotowhat to do.

Not really. You MUST get more space available or you will lose more than just photot. You need a minimum of 10GB of free space on your Hard Drive at all times. You probably need to buy an external hard drive and run iPhoto on to. Drag the iPhoto library to it intact as a single entity. Depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command to choose it

  • I have 2717 "items" but 2729 total???  missing pics

10 pics are missing--no thumbnails (no dotted box) but they are findable and even have a roll number if I search with Finder. But in iphoto the number of items is different than the "total" which is in parentheses.
I saved the pics on the desktop and imported them the same way I've done before. They appeared to import but where are they? I can't see them on the iphoto library.
I rebuilt everything and re-imorted them several times.

No. And this is the first time there has been more than just "2700 items" on the bottom of the pane. Now it reads "2717 items (2729 total)". When I "get info" re: the whole library it says I have #pics and # movies addind up to 2717 exactly. The missing pics are apparently neither? Also, movies have always been represented by a thumbmnail and are visible.
I tried again to import a photo from a different source and it works fine. It is only these specific photos that don't seems to import. But now I can't delete them either. The message bar at the bottom of the pane keeps showing "2717 items (2729 total)" and it keeps going up even after I deleted the pics and the thumbnails from the library file folder.

  • Problem syncing iPhoto 6 pics to my iPod touch...it adds an extra folder

Not sure which product forum to post this on, but here I go.
I'm ending up with way too many photos on my iPod. When I sync my iPod touch in iTunes it asks for the source of pictures so I select iPhoto. Then it asks which specific albums I want to sync. I select a few of them.
When I open the photo function on the touch it shows all the specific albums I selected PLUS it adds one that it calls "Photo Library" which has a variety of my iPhoto library pics...
How can I get rid of it???

  • When using photoshop elements as editor in iPhoto the pic does not show up when PS opens

When using photoshop elements as editor in iPhoto the pic does not show up when PS opens

Ralph9430 offers a good suggestion.  But you may need to do this before taking his advice:
Check in iPhoto's Preferences (which you can open from the iPhoto menu).  Look in General, and make sure "Connecting Camera Opens" is set to "Image Capture").
If it is set to "iPhoto", you won't be able to get to Image Capture easily.

  • How do I import iPhoto 08 pics into iMovie 6?

I opened up iPhoto 08 and it indicated that all my iPhoto 6 pics would have to be imported but wouldn't be backwards compatible. When I open iMovie 6 and go to insert the iPhoto pics, none of them show up. I assumed (I know) that iPhoto wouldn't be backwards compatible WITHIN iPhoto, but it appears the pics are not backwards compatible with iMovie 6 either. Is there a fix or am I hosed?

I have iPhoto 08 and use it just fine with iMovie 6, no problem whatsoever.
Try deleting the preference files for both iPhoto and iMovie 6 and see if that helps. Close both apps first.
Go to YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist and com.apple.iMovie.plist (NOT iMovie7.plist). Drag those plist files to the trash. Reopen iPhoto, click on a couple of photos, then close it, and open iMovie. See if it works with iPhoto 8 now.
Post back if this does not work.

Since upgrade to Yosemite my iphoto 6000+ pics are in chaos.  2011 mixed in with 2014 some in blocks, then many just random one or two pics. Event absolutely all over the place, over 5 years.  Can anyone help please?

  • Missing pics in iPhoto albums.  How do I get them back?

I am heartbroken because I am realizing that some of my albums are missing photos, and I'm hoping someone can tell me how to get them back.  I confess that I have so many pics, I don't even know which ones are missing, but one album that I'm sure should have 45 pics has just about 20.  If they've disappeared altogether from my computer, that would be just awful, since many are old family photos that I spent forever scanning.  I'm on an early 2008 White Macbook, OS X (10.6.8) with iPhoto 09 (8.1.2)  Thank you in advance for any helpful instructions you can provide (and not too technical please -- I know my Macs, but I'm not a programmer or anything like that.)

The following may help you understand about deleting photos from a library:
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library:
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

  • Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off.  Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics.  Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac.  After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore.  In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year.  To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period!  Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos.  So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on.  These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine.  But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified.  This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April.  Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage?  If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
    Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • Missing pics in iPhoto

Having recently created several new folders in iPhoto and dragged the pics into the folders, when I click on the folder, the pics show up on the main page, but clicking on any pic just shows a grayed out outline.
Is this because I've enhanced the shot and thus changed it's parameters, because even though I can bring the pics up in Finder, I cant trust the folders if I need to have a book printed, or transfer to a slide show or other application where I may need to show these pics directly out of iPhoto.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    sapper
You can't drag pics to Folders in the iPhoto window, folders only hold albums.
The grey outline turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.

  • HT2638 iphoto missing all pics

iphoto 7.1.5 all photos, thumbnails are missing. I had over 20 thousand photos in my library all of which are missing. Has anyone every had this problem?

Restore from your back up is the obvious solution.

  • Missing pics from iPhoto. Blank thumbnails.

All the photos from several iPhoto events are missing. I have rebuilt the library, followed all the directions to rebuild thumbnails, etc., multiple times, but the photos are still gone. The info for the photos is still there, including date, file name, etc., but they can't be viewed, edited, or exported. The finder can't find them. They seem to be phantom photos. Only their ghostly outlines remain. Can they be recovered, or is this a lost cause?

Have you tried restoring from Time Machine? (Restore to another location so you don't overwrite your current library)
Have you tried Downloading iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Save me! Missing pics after import from CD? what the..?

    Hello Mac superstars,
I'm on a macbook pro from late 2011, on lion so I think that I would then have iphoto 11?
    Here's my story:
    -  Imported some photos from disc & first event created. But after ejecting disc, couldn't view pictures in iphoto (thumbnail fine, shows up in event but can't open to view full picture).
    -  Re-inserted disc, uploaded same pics to desktop then imported same pics from desktop into iphoto, to a new event.
    -  Think I opened the wrong event (direct from CD) and created an album & began editing. But disc was still in there so must have been working from disc?
    -  All was working fine for a while there...couldn't view photos at all.
    -  Then, I thought I deleted the original event with the pics uploaded from CD but may have deleted the event with the import from desktop??
    -  Can't restore from iphoto trash, original files nowhere to be found on my mac.
    -  Can't find photos from when they were saved to desktop using remorecovery software
All other photos fine, just this one group of photos missing .. Please provide troubleshooting tips!!
    Many thanks

Thre's nothing odd here, it's exactly by design and as you have chosen.
You imported from a CD in a Referenced Library. If you run a Referenced Library then you decide where the files are stored. You decided they are stored on the CD. Now there is no CD there are no files.
When you import any files in any iPhoto set up, the app creates a thumbnail for fast viewing in the iPhoto Window. That thumbnail is stored in the Library package. That's why you can see it.
So, these files were never on your HD - or if they were they were deleted - so unless you're willing to run expensive File Recovery software there is no way to get them back.
If you wish to try something like File Salvage you may be lucky, if the files were on the HD at some point and if they haven't been overwritten since.

  • IPhoto Missing Photos, Unique Situation

    Hi everybody,
I am in what I believe to be (after a bit of Googling and forum searching) in a unique position with my iPhoto Library. The library in question used to be maintained without keeping copies in the actual library (by using the relevant option in iPhoto Preferences), as I like to maintain my own folder hierarchy for the actual photo file storage. However, after a hard drive upgrade and the move to iPhoto '08, I decided I'd like to change this. Before moving to '08, though, I needed a way to get all my then-aliased photos into the library itself. So, I used a program called Synk (basically a backup program) which was able to resolve all the aliases to photos elsewhere and replace them with the actual photos in my iPhoto library.
The old system and paths have since been replaced (due in no small part to a hard drive crash), and I'm now having an issue with those photos whose links no longer work. Apparently, said links weren't working during the resolution of the aliases, and so a number of broken links made their way into the new library and are now still there. And, unfortunately, those photos were stored on a drive which no longer exists, meaning anytime I try to click on one of those photos, iPhoto gives me the spinning beach ball of death for a minute or two (per photo) as it tries to connect to that drive. When it finally fails, it brings up the "Could not find this photo" dialogue box and gives me the option to find it, but to do this for all the missing links (as there are quite a few) would be extremely tedious.
So, I'm wondering what ideas people have as to go about restoring my library. I still have all (or at least most) of the missing photos in question on disk; they're just not properly linked. And I'd really like to keep all my tagging, renaming, and comment info for the photos that are there, given I've done extensive work in these areas. Thanks for any help.

    CyberMonk:
I hope you didn't use Synk on the entire library package. Because it cannot parse the database file's contents which is the heart and soul of the library. I'm afraid you may not be able to resurrect the library.
Since the links for the alias files are broken unless you can re-link each file you'll have to start over from scratch by creating a new, empty library and importing the photos again. I don't know of any application that can do that.
Do you get a warning window when double clicking on a thumbnail indicating that the original file cannot be found and asks if you'd like to find it? If so, if you can find and re-link one photo in an event it may re-link all of the photos in that event as they are all in the same folder. But you have to be able to get to that warning window.
If the above fails I strongly recommend you setup a "managed" library to prevent this type of problem again.
You could run a managed library of all your photos on the external HD and have a smaller library on the laptop for the most current and those you need. You can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to manage the multiple libraries and copy files via albums or event between the two while maintaining the keywords, comments and title.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
