I have photos and movies within iPhoto.
Is there an easy way to get the iPhoto movies onto my apple tv - without importing them into iTunes?
The only way I have found is to use iTunes as a stepping stone - but this seems crazy as I end up with the movie in iPhoto and iTunes.
I do not need this step with photos. Why should movies be different

Personally I'd rather have all my movies whether they came from a video camera, a still camera or wherever all in one place rather than some in itunes and some in iphoto.
No, there is no way to have movies on the tv other than through itunes.

Movies should be exported from iMovie using the Apple TV preset and placed in iTunes. Movie projects in iMovie are in an editable format which is not suitable for use with the Apple TV.
Photos from iPhoto should be placed in albums or events and shared via the advance menu in iTunes, they cannot be shared directly from iPhoto to the Apple TV.
nothing can be shared when the Mac is asleep, although you can set it to wake on network activity in the security system preferences.

Streaming a downloaded movie onto Apple TV

I downloaded a movie from the internet of which the files are in vob format. I can play the movie fine on my iMac through DVD player. How can I stream this this movie to my HDTV through Apple TV using Airplay? Home Sharing is turned for both the iMac and the Apple TV, and my iTunes library is appearing on the Apple TV menu screen.
Do I have to import the movie into my iTunes library? If so, how do I do that? I tried importing the folder containing the movie into iTunes but couldn't do it. Do I have to convert it to a different format?

vob format would usually indicate a DVD source - if you downloaded this from somewhere the assumption would be it's a commercial movie someone else has ripped and is illegally being made available for download on the internet.
Discussion about obtaining/ripping/converting commercial copy protected DVD content is prohibited by the forum T&Cs and often prompts thread deletion by the moderators.
I know OS X DVD Player allow playback of vob fies but itunes does not, and these files are incompatible with AppleTV.

Do you want to create a video DVD that will plan on a TV set via a DVD player or just burn the video files to a data DVD disk for storage?

Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. I have these movies downloaded on the old computer from digital hd redeemed codes: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Super 98, Thor, Inception, The Hunger Games, and Star Trek Into Darkness. I bought Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on itunes with money, and that one isn't showing up either. When I search it on itunes to see if I can just re-download it, that isn't an option. I would have to buy it again. Home Sharing isn't what I want because the old computer will not be here forever and it is not connected to wifi.
It's kind of a lot of movies, and I want them on the new computer.

I had the same question as was asked here, and I see that if I turn off my Wi-Fi on my iPad I can no longer access the iTunes Extras. However, if the extras are streaming-based, why is the file size of movies with Extras so much larger than those without? Any other HD movie with a similar running time is between 1.5 and 2.5GB, all with Extras are between 3.5 and 5GB. The problem isn't the Extras, its the lack of space on my iPad.

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
