IPhoto n00b import question

I recently switched from a PC to a Mac mini and have migrated all the applications I am able to but for one - CompuPic.
Using CompuPic on the PC, I arranged all the pictures I took over the last few years into a hierarchial structure reaching 6-8 folder levels deep in places, and these folders have been copied over intact from the PC.
When asking around about photo editing / management software on the Mac, iPhoto keeps popping up as the recommended program, but I haven't had much luck with it so far.
I've heard of using the file's metadata to 'tag' the pictures and being able to sort on the same (and like the concept), but for now I just need something that will allow me to work with my filing system as it is now until I start getting the hang of iPhoto.
Is there a way I can import my existing hierarchial folder arrangement directly into iPhoto or do I need to pour all 3GB+ of my pictures into a single folder and then build up events / albums / etc. by hand in iPhoto?

To add to Old Toad's input:
The key concept that can take a few moments with iPhoto is that it's about organising your Photos rather than the files that contain them. So, you let iPhoto manage the files and you sort, organise and do everything else in the iPhoto Window - without recourse to the files. If you want to gather all your favourite pics, well then give them all five stars and create a Smart Album so you can see them together. iPhoto will create the album but not move the files. It will reference them on the HD.
If you then want to access the actual file: There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
As OT says: create a test library and experiment is the best way to learn.

  • IPhoto iPhone Import Question

Hello... when I plug in my iPhone to sync, it opens iPhoto where I can view photos/videos I can import. The issue I have is that some of the pictures or videos come up blank and I cannot see what it is. I quit and come back, resync, etc, it's always the same pictures/videos that just do not show what the item is.
The same happens in Image Capture, but instead of being blank, it just shows the icon of a JPEF file instead of a pictures.
Does anyone know why this happens?

There really isn't anything different about them. All of them are in my Camera Roll and all of them have been taken with the iPhone 4. None of the affected pictures are imports from a previous generation iPhone either. I just have taken them and noticed that the pictures are missing when I'm importing. I should point out that the import works fine, it's just that I cannot see what I'm importing sometimes.

  • IPhoto Newbie Import Question

Okay guys, this is my first full day with my new MacBook Pro coming from decades of PCs and iPhoto has me completely stymied I've browsed through the posts here and have read a few but ended up even more confused, so...
I transfered my photos and images to my Mac's Pictures directory. Later, I launched iPhoto and agreed to let it scan my disc for images to import into iPhoto. It found all my images and placed them within iPhoto.
    1. Are these iPhoto images duplicates of the originals I transferred into Pictures or just "references" to the actual images in Pictures? (iPhoto organized them using the same folder names I used in Pictures.)
    2. If I have Photoshop Elements, is there really any reason for me to use iPhoto? It's structure is just so baffling compared to the apps I'm used to working with. It's obviously a very popular app with you Macophiles--I'm trying to appreciate it but haven't found out it's secret yet.
    Thanks!

If you’re using iPhoto in the default configuration, then yes, they are duplicates, and you can trash the pics you brought into your Pictures Folder.
Just don’t do it today... leave it a while until you come to understand iPhoto and have confidence in it.

Elements is an Image Editor, iPhoto is a Photo Organiser. You can use them together becuase they do different things.
The most obvious reasons for using iPhoto are:
    1. It’s almost limitless flexibility in organising your photos.
You can put your photos into folders and what do you have? Folders. In iPhoto you can create albums of your photos. A single photos can be in 1, 10 or 100 albums while using no extra disk space. So - An Album of Vacation Photos: Easy, same as a folder. Now, an Album of your favourite Vacation Photos. Or Just your favourite photos. Add keywords into the mix and ratings and the possibilities are endless. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
Of course, with all your files in Folders you have... files in folders.
    2. Integration throughout the entire Operating System. Your Photos are available from Every Open... dialogue, from media browsers and so on.
    3. Very easy to Back Up.
    4. • IPhone 4 and iPhoto 9 import issue

I just bought an iPhone 4 to replace my iPhone 3GS a few days ago. I finally had a chance to try its camera this weekend. Much to my surprise, all the photos I imported into iPhoto 9 on my MacBook Pro lost their XIF and geotag data once they landed in my iPhoto 9 library. I deleted the photos from my iPhone 4 so I couldn't go back to verify that the information was there. So tonight, I went out for a walk and I shot a few more photos with my iPhone 4. Instead of importing them into iPhoto 9, I used Image Capture to import them from my iPhone 4 into my MBP's Pictures folder. Then I checked and all the XIF and geotag data survived the transfer. I then imported the photos into iPhoto 9 by dragging them onto its icon in the Dock. I then was able to view the XIF and geotag data from within iPhoto 9.
So my question is, why can't iPhoto 9 import the XIF and geotag data in photos directly from the iPhone 4? Is there any way I can fix this via some optional setting or am I do I need to wait for Apple to resolve this issue?

I don't have any problem importing photos from my iPhone 4 with iPhoto '09 (v 8.1.2)--it just works, so I really don't know what might be going wrong. I import by selecting my iPhone 4 in the iPhoto Devices and then select the ones I want to import and click on import selected. It has never failed to also import the EXIF data including the geolocation/camera info.

  • IPhoto 4 importing duplicate photos without dialog box opening

I often import pictures from my Canon PowerShot SD550 to more than one computer. I do not use iPhoto to delete photos after importing. Occasionally I need to import more recent photos to one computer before I have the opportunity to import older photos to the other computer which is at another location. I used to get a dialog box on this computer asking me if I want to import duplicate photos. I must have accidentally checked the wrong box once because iPhoto now imports all photos every time without the dialog box. How can I regain control to not import duplicates?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It's just me … restating my question. My original wording was not as clear as I thought!

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • How to import questions into Captivate 4 from a delimited file

    I'm looking
a way to import questions from a delimited text file (or excel spreadsheet)
    into captivate.
All the questions are simple multiple choice, single answer, four selections per question.
I have hundreds - I'd hate to have to retype them all in one at a time.
    Thanks in advance
    -Joan

Does anyone know if this is a feature in Captivate 5.
Other things I would really like to see in Captivate 5.
Importing and Exporting the graded quiz/test content out of captivate into another
application/ form.  Such as xml, tab delimited, excel spreadsheet,
Adobe pdf, Word document or another format.  Our current content
developement systems allows us to (when publishing) do this.
1> exclude questions from the Published content
(exclude section questions, or final test content)
2> produce different test versions from question banks
3> Produce a PDF paper test for when we want to train in a classroom setting
4> Select which questions we want to produce
5> Import questions from a pre-defined format.  To note: when we do this the system also makes us define a unique interaction id so that the import will update existing questions.
I know this will NOT work for some of the more sophisticated questions, But for the simple Mulitple choice, true/false, fill in the blank.  etc..
THIS WOULD BE A GREAT FEATURE..
It would also be NICE TO HAVE THE abiliy to PROFILE versions of the SAME Course WITH OUT REPRODUCING / DUPLICATING / REPEATING THE  ENTIRE COURSE PRESENTATION.
    Such as
    "INSTRUCTOR TAUGHT TRAINING"
    "WEB TRAINING"
    "PAPER TEST A"
    "PAPER TEST B"
    ETC...
LASTLY: if we can not export the QUIZ content.  Can an excel spreadsheet LIKE INTERFACE be used to edit certain aspects of the questions.
Such as the InteractionId which is sent to the LMS ('cmi.interactions.0.id').  My developer team says it is real difficult and time consuming
to track down interactionIds and then maintain them in a perfect way.

  • IPhone no longer shows in iPhoto to import photos after 9.2 and iOS 5 updates

For some reason my iPhone 4S doesn't show in iPhoto to import photos.  Oddly, iPhoto will launch when I plug into sync, but the phone does not show.  Also, the phone doesn't show in the Image Capture application.

Same problem but I noticed that plugging my iphone or ipad in will launch iphoto and the device will show up on the left and new photos from the device will display.  However, the devices don't show up on the left if iphoto is already running when when I plug them in.  It's an easy workaround to turn iphoto off before plugging the device in but it's not the way it was before upgrading to IOS5 and 9.2.

There is no way to export Faces information.
I'm not sure why you would do this:
If I copy a folder from iPhoto on to a hard drive, then delete it from iphoto then import it again,
If space is an issue then move the whole Library to an external drive:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
