Iphoto no longer works =(

Over the holidays I burned a disk of photos from my in-laws brand new imac, which I am certain uses iphoto '09. My mac uses iphoto '08.
After launching the disk to my Mac and opening/copying the photos to iphoto- it completely shut down. Now I cannot use it at all.
The message reads, "You have made changes to iphoto using a newer version. Please shut down and use the newer version".
Then it closes the program down.
I am not sure what to do- I don't want to lose all of my library! I have two brand new baby girls and so many great photos of them!!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

What version of iPhoto do you have?  With Yosemite you must be running iPhoto 9.6.1 which is a available from the App Store.  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll have to download and apply the  iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 to the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.6.1. It'll be located in the Applications/Utilities folder after downloading.
    Now for your system:
    Startup Items: ℹ️
        ChmodBPF: Path: /Library/StartupItems/ChmodBPF
Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite
Either remove this or update it so it's compatible with Yosemite.
Get rid of the antivirus software as rkaufmann87 mentioned.  It's not needed.
    User Launch Agents: ℹ️
[failed]    com.goacemjobhmmbdlbbfjgifjcojdfnjfm.updater.plist [Click for support][Click for details]
Don't know what this is for.  There was no info on Google about it so remove it.
Currently you're not having any memory problems since your Page-outs are essentially non existent. You can check it as you work with Activity Monitor.
    Virtual Memory Information: ℹ️
        958 MB    Free RAM
        1.48 GB    Active RAM
        795 MB    Inactive RAM
        616 MB    Wired RAM
        4.25 GB    Page-ins
        24 MB    Page-outs
As long as the memory pressure is in the green and constant and you're not seeing a lot of SWODs you shouldn't be concerned about the memory.  Of course increasing memory will nearly always improve general system and application performance. But you didn't mention slowness as part of your problem.

I have the newest version of the mac book pro and i recently bought iLife 11 because i needed idvd but when i installed iLife my iphoto no longer works and will not let me open. How do i fix this

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iTunes in Mac OS X Tiger is outdated. Open  > Software Update to install the latest iTunes version for Tiger.
If you need iTunes 10.7 or a newer version, you have to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. First, check that your Mac is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 If it is, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After buying Snow Leopard, make a backup of your data, insert the DVD and upgrade to Snow Leopard. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install the latest Snow Leopard version. Finally, run Software Update again to install iTunes 11.0.4. If you want to install iTunes 10.7 instead, download it from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1576

My iPhoto will no longer work after upgrading to Mavericks. iPhoto will not update. How do I fix this?

Just upgraded and Iphoto will not work,
Check that iPhoto is v9.5.1 (In Applications, highlight iPhoto, and ⌘I)
If it is v9.5.1, then hold option-command and click the iPhoto icon and go through the repair steps.

  • IPhoto no longer works with Nikon 5100 after upgrade to 10.8

IPhoto with newly installed Mountain Lion no longer recognizes a connection to my  Nikon 5100.  The USB cable is good, as it works with  my other Macs  -- OSX versions 10.6.8 and 10.7.4, just as it did with my Imac before I upgraded to 10.8.  My Preferences are set to recognize any camera.  I even upgraded to IPhoto 11 v9.3.2, but no help.  Any ideas?

Hi, I have the same problem with my Nikon Coolpix 5000: camera is not recognized at all by Mountain Lion after upgrading: worked just fine with Lion.
Problem: I connect the camera, Mac (MacBook Pro Late 2011) freezes for a while (!!!) then external disk icon does not appear.
Console registers messages like the following:
    20/08/12 19:34:24,000 kernel[0]: USBF: 363761.547 AppleUSBEHCI[0xffffff801fcbf000]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 0, EP: 0)
Strange thing is, my Coolpix 5000 is a very old camera with only USB 1 support: this problem occurs to me with every USB 1 device connected on Mountain Lion!
Hope they'll fix the problem or just find some workaround...

  • Many videos from iPhone that were in iPhoto no longer work and all have lost their thumbnails. It won't let me import videos at all now.

After installing Yosemite many of the videos I had in iPhoto won't play at all. All the videos (including missing ones) now have dashes around a thumbnail shape instead of the thumbnails that were there. When I click on the thumbnail shape of any of the ones it won't play it says "The operation couldn't be completed (OSStatus error -54.)"  These are videos that were there in Mavericks before I installed Yosemite and worked fine then.  Also now I am unable to import any videos from my iPhone or my desktop, even ones that it took before. It says the file is an unrecognized format.
What I want to know is - is this on purpose?  Did Apple suddenly withdraw all support for videos in iPhoto and in the process destroy the ones that were there or is something wrong with my system? Do other people see thumbnails and are able to play videos and import new ones in iPhoto in Yosemite? I wouldn't be surprised if something is wrong with my system since after upgrading to Yosemite ALL the thousands of carefully organized songs in my iTunes playlists were missing and I don't think that was on purpose but the fact that I can't import new videos makes me think this is on purpose.
If this is on purpose, if iPhoto on Yosemite is really no longer able to take videos what can I use instead?   In iPhoto my many videos were organized into folders and subfolders and sub-sub folders.  I can't do that in iTunes and also can't adjust thumbnail size in iTunes so videos take up way too much space there. Any suggestions on third party programs that will let me organize videos into folders and subfolders, etc and see thumbnails at small sizes?  I just need to be able to organize the videos and click them to play.

    THANK YOU!
I noticed this morning a lot of the thumbnails were back that weren't there last night.  It must have very slowly been bringing them back, but the videos that would not play at all were still not working and there were still quite a few without thumbnails.  I followed your suggestion and I'm amazed! That actually fixed everything!  Now all the thumbnails are back, the videos that wouldn't play at all now work fine, and iPhoto let me import the videos that it wouldn't last night .  I hope it stays like that but at least I know what to do if this happens again, if I dare to install any updates.
What does holding down the option key with launching the program do?  I might need to use this again or with other programs.
    Liz

  • Brand new iMac -iphoto no longer works

Hi, just got the Imac and has been using it for 2 weeks. Today my daughter decided to run the CD Applications install DVD that came with the computer. It apparently reinstalled some features and completed installation successfully.
But after running this CD, IPhoto Icon was no longer the same, it has like a crossed circle (wrong way or forbidden for driving analogy). When i try to launch iphoto and click on the icon, a message says : "you cannot open iphoto because maybe it is damaged or incomplete." ( The sentence is translated from Portuguese which is my language set up.)
Tried running once more the Application Install DVD but it does not work any longer and gives another error message.....
This is my first Apple. Switched from Windows because I was tired of all those bugs. My friends told me to switch to Apple because I would never have the same type of problems...!
Really want the Iphoto back !

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Just installed iMac firmware update - iphoto no longer works (beach ball)

I just installed the most recent iMac and keyboard firmware updates. Now when i try to use iphoto it opens quickly and then as soon as i try to do anything i get the spinning beach ball until i force quit. I have no idea how to fix this. I have rebooted and the same results.
    Any ideas?

Well it somehow fixed itself ... now everything works fine ... hopefully it doesn't return.
    Thank you.

  • Iphoto no longer works after my yosemite "upgrade".

    A little help here Apple.

No "Apple" here - this is strictly a user to user support forum and we can not see your or your computer
If you want help form Apple then you need to contact Apple
If you want help from us but to get it you actually have to provide information - what version of iPhoto? Why doesn't iPhoto work?
simplest answer is that you must also upgrade iPhoto to version 9.6 - backup your iPhoto library and download and install 9.6 from the App store
    LN

  • IPhoto no longer works since I installed Yosemite.

I can see the old library when I open the contents of iPhoto, but I can not make any program open the folder to see the contents. Including the new iMac Photos program. When I try to open the iPhoto with Photos it says that I need to upgrade iPhoto, but it will not let me do so. I just want to see and open the former events folders I created in iPhoto with iPhoto or even another program. I have 51,000 photos that exist on the computer, and no way to access them.

Importing will copy them. And copying the Master folder to the desktop will also take up space. So if you don't have the room, then it won't work. You could move the Master's folder to the desktop from the iPhoto package, but you would have to put it back if you want to preserve the iPhoto Library.
You could also break down the Masters folder into smaller groups there as they are ordered by date and event folders and not import all at once.
Best if you have an external drive to backup the iPhoto Library to and put the Master folder on the external also. Then you could create space on your drive and do what you need to.
Or, figure out how to get a copy of iPhoto 9.6.1 application. Then you could use it or convert the library with it so Photos can migrate it. Then you will also preserve the Events (albums) you created with iPhoto.

  • IPhoto no longer works after update

I did the Maverick update for my computer, and now it says I have to update iPhoto. Every time I try to update it, it freezes my whole computer for hours unless I shut it down. What do I do?

what version are you upgrading from?  Have you updated to iphoto '11 version 9.5 (available to iPhoto '11 owners as a free update in the app store)?
If you have iPhoto version 9.5 and you are upgrading form iPhoto '09 or earlier you first must download, install nad launch the library upgrader
We need details, exact error messages and context to give valid answers - other wise there are many, many options and many conditional statements to be made

  • Aperture 3 file-level import from iPhoto no longer working

With Aperture-2 I was able to import photos from a (remote) iPhoto library (like on my wife's iMac). It showed the iPhoto events as folders, allowed me to unstack the edited ones -- it simply behaved like accessing photos in folders.
Using Import/Files… in Aperture-3 hides iPhoto libraries, so there is now way to access the pictures inside.
The option Import/Show iPhoto Browser… accesses my own (empty) iPhoto library. Ony if I double-click the remote iPhoto library, launching my local copy of iPhoto, I am able to see the remote pictures in the Aperture iPhoto browser. To import, I have to drag photos over to Aperture projects or albums.
This was much easier in Aperture-2 !!
Has anyone figured if this import method is still available in Aperture-3 ? Maybe I haven't found it yet.

I have the same problem the screen is show something like this:
And never stops and show any photo.
In other way i want to use it to create an slideshow that scroll the map showing the photos, it is possible?
An update soon to fix this problem...
    Thanks...

  • I took my lap top in 2 weeks ago after loading Lion because iPhoto no longer works still have no answer they are still working on it  now my desk top has done the same thing

I Photo and Lion do not mix!!!!!

At some point in time had you copied over the same library to both computers?
Have you tried creating a new iPhoto library by holding down option when launching iPhoto and creating a new one.

"Reducing" red-eye is a little misleading. It's removed, not reduced, and what you're seeing is the absence of color. The effect shouldn't be very noticeable unless you're zoomed in for very close viewing, in which case you'll need to use a more sophisticated image editor to fix the red-eye.
