IPhoto not importing keywords

I use Nikon ViewNX for pulling files off of my Nikon DSLRs, iPhone and point&shoot cameras. Then I cull, sort and keyword the files. I then import the files into iPhoto. For some reason, the keywords do not come with the files from the Nikon cameras (RAW and jpeg on D200 & D800). The keywords seem to stick with the iPhone and point&shoot files. Interestingly, I can see the keywords using Finders Info pane, but iPhoto seems to strip them off. Can't see the keywords with Aperture either. Am I missing a setting somewhere? Thanks.

Add keywords to a couple of photos with the ViewNX app and then open them with Preview. Bring up the Info window for that image (type Command+i in Preview) and click the the IPTC button:
If the keywords show up there then iPhoto should be able to read and display them If they don't then the ViewNX is not writing the keywords to the correct field so iPhoto an read them.

This feature was removed with iPhoto 11. You'll need to ask Apple why:
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
In the meantime you can convert a pdf to jpeg or tiff using Preview.

IPhoto not importing or is it?

Everytime I open iPhoto, i get an error message that says: 38 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that were not imported. Would I like to import them.
When I click "Yes", it doesn't import anything. This message repeats itself twice everytime.
When I click "No", it says. The photos have been placed in the folder /Users/brad/Pictures/iPhoto Library Recovered Photos_14. It repeats a second time and says: The photos have been placed in the folder /Users/brad/Pictures/iPhoto Library Recovered Photos_16.
I have a list of folders where it keeps creating them over and over. How do I get this to stop?

I just got some help on this. The answer to this problem is inside my iPhoto Library is a folder called "imports>masters> and several sub folders. Most were empty; however, I found 38 "Locked" short .MOV files there. I did a simple drag and drop to the desktop and deleted the folders in Masters. Problem solved.

IPhoto not importing from Quick Look

iPhoto does not import from Quick Look.
• Sometimes the image will check in Quick Look, iPhoto starts up, but nothing imports.
• Other times, the item appears already checked when it open in Quick Look, but same result, nothing in iPhoto.
This happens with old images, new images, a just saved screen shot for example.
I have reinstalled iLife, repaired Permissions, scrapped the iPhoto Library and let iPhoto create a new one with defaults. Nothing has worked.

And with no configuraton changes, just plugging in the iPad [after walking around a bit] and the import worked as expected - nice that is works, bad that it is not consistant :-/

IPhoto not importing T4i movie clips

Just got a canon t4i. Took it out for a test run. Shooting Video only. Came back to import to iPhoto then import to iMovie. I have it set at 24 frames ps. Of the 353 small clips only one up loaded, and I can't find it in iPhoto. The rest were never imported to iPhoto. Window came up that said Error importing image. That's all the info I got. I tried it 8-10 times, every time it said the same thing. I did find one clip, it played back total black in QuickTime.
What's my problem?

Why does iphoto not import my photos chronologically into events

I have just updated to the latest version of iphoto and infuriatingly whenever I now import photos, rather than placing them at the bottom of the series of events in chronological order, iphoto now imports them as the second event next to photos from 2000, so I have to move them manually down to the bottom, even though the date being shown is correct, can anyone help?

I have the same. I think it changed with iPhoto 11. I drag them all the way down all the time. Try to set the chronological order, under "Presentation" (sorry I work in a French version Presentation is at the left side of "Window") and then right in the middle "sort events" and check chronological order. Hope this helps.

IPhoto not importing photos

Good evening-
Backstory: I installed a ssd into my macpro. I have an internal raid card where my old iphoto library has been stored. I copied and pasted the original files from within the iPhoto Library files and tried to reimport those files into iPhoto. The problem is that iPhoto says that the file format is wrong (all video files are from our iPhones. When I click the video file on its own, it opens up in QuickTime and plays with no problems.
I have spoken with Apple on a couple occasions and nothing seemed to work. I tried creating a new library and reimporting everything in. I have tried importing 5 years worth of files (well over 20k files) in at one time and I have tried to chunk the process by importing individual years... then I have tried to import individual files. There does not appear to be a rhyme or reason as to which movie files are rejected and some are accepted.
Any advice, please?

Rather than trying to copy and paste - and that can go badly wrong depending on exactly what you're copying and where you're pasting to - why not try a simple repair of the Library.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new iPhoto 08 library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

IPhoto not recognizing keywords created in CS3

I've added keywords to files (both psds and jpegs) I've created in Photoshop and Bridge (CS3). If I look at the file info in Finder, the keywords are there. But when I look at the info of the file in iPhoto, the keywords don't show. Also when I create a Smart Album to match the keywords, nothing shows.
Any ideas?

Not what I did. I searched on Google and found only references to jpeg and tiff supporting IPTC and none to psd. Have you tried that? I'm not sure that the Finder supports IPTC data, only limited Exif.
Why would photoshop be writing for the benefit of the Apple operating system when it's cross platform?
Because they're nice people? Or because both Oses support basic metadata comments?

IPhoto not imported correctly?

I purchased and installed Aperture the other day. I then opened it, but decided to close it immediately, and import my iPhoto library the next day.
The following day I got ready to import my iPhoto library. According to page 174 of the pdf manual, there are several options, such as storing imported master location, import as referenced images, a 'move files' or 'copy files' button, and several others. However during the import, I was given none of these options. I selected File - Import - Library, chose my iPhoto library, and immediately a "merging libraries" message was displayed. After about 15 minutes the message disappeared, and all my iPhoto events now appear to be in individual projects, faces and places are OK, and all seems to be well. Oddly, I noticed that in the manual, the command is given as just 'File - Import - iPhoto library', which I cannot see.
Has the import gone correctly? If so, why did I not received the various import options mentioned in the manual?
The original iPhoto library appears to be intact, and I now have an Aperture Library in my Pictures folder.
Would appreciate any help.

Don't worry, Steve. You imported your iPhoto library correctly.
What you have read in the manual, is how the iPhoto library was imported in the earlier Aperture versions, before the unified Aperture-iPhoto library had been introduced with Aperture 3.3.

You also could have simply opened your iPhoto library in Aperture and used it directly as your photo library, without importing it. Both Aperture and iPhoto can use each others libraries like their own, see:

I add some photos of public domain stuff from the web and they may come in with two dozen keywords, not in my system.

No.
Remove them before importing.
Or, aftr importing use the Manage Keywords window to remove them.

Why is iPhoto not importing JPG files?

I am trying to import photos from a Canon EOS Rebel to my iMac. It has always worked fine but it is now showing that the JPG file is not a recognized format. I was able to import the same photo to an old older MacBook Pro running the same OSX 10.6.8 and iPhoto '11 9.1.3.

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Will Faces & Places work with pictures I import from Aperture? I there a way of viewing the Aperture Library and then dragging and dropping a Project/Event to iPhoto with the data to make Faces and Places and Ratings etc show up in iPhoto 09 (which I do not have but might get)...

I tried to export from Aperture to a folder, but it seems to work only with masters, not with versions (or at least I can't find an option to export metadata in File->Export->Versions).
What I'd need iPhoto for is to catalog and display my elaborated pics. So I could copy only my iPhoto Library to my MacBook.

Why does my iPhoto not import JPE-Format ??

Help... anyone...
...i have read a few posts online, where people say that this problem is one of the past, and apparently does not apply to the newest version on iPhoto, but I have just bought a brand new iMac with the very latest version of iPhoto and it still tells me that it cannot read the JPE-Format!!!
I downloaded these JPE-Files online, they are Wallpapers that i wanted to trim in iPhoto..... no luck :-(

Just found my own solution.... open the pic from Finder, from that Preview-Window save all over with the JPEG-Format, and then i was able to import into iPhoto!! :-))

IPhoto deleted important keywords and over 1000 tags!

I have an extensive list of keywords and two of my most used keywords have suddenly disappeared, along with the tagging of the photos! Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a way to get my hours of tagging work back?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
